2 Stavanger, Norway Dear Friends, To be in Scandinavia during the summer solstice is a truly magical experience. The lingering glow of the longest days of summer lends a special aura to landscapes and seascapes alike. We invite you to join President emeritus John Kuykendall, his wife Missy, and fellow alumni and friends of Davidson College for a very special cruise to the historic cities and the majestic fjords of Norway and Sweden surely one of the loveliest cruise destinations in the world. Our journey begins with visits to the fine monuments and museums of Oslo, Norway s capital, and the lively harbor town of Goteborg in Sweden, but it s the spectacular fjord lands of Norway that are the focal point of the cruise. From Storfjord to Nordfjord to the emerald Lake Stryn, we ll behold these natural wonders in all their marvelous variety crystal-clear fjords, alpine peaks, and stunning waterfalls. Along the way, we will discover Stavanger, Europe s largest wooden city, the historic towns of Arendal and Kristiansand, and the exuberant Art Nouveau structures of Alesund before ending our voyage in the colorfully ancient Hanseatic town of Bergen. Davidson travelers will enjoy many arrangements exclusive to our group, including our hotel stay in Oslo and the complete program of custom-designed shore excursions that are outlined in the pages that follow. John and Missy will also host members of our group each evening at dinner. 3 GUEST HOSTS JOHN 59 and MISSY KUYKENDALL made their home in Davidson the first year of their marriage (a while ago!) and returned to town 32 years ago. John served as President of the College from 1984 to 1997; then returned to full-time teaching in the Department of Religion until his retirement in Meanwhile Missy continued her practice as a counselor and served as a volunteer on several boards in Davidson and the Charlotte area. They have continued to live in Davidson since John s retirement, but try to spend time at their place in western North Carolina whenever they can. With sons Tim and Jamie long since on their own, their only current household member is a Border Collie dog named Jed. The Kuykendalls look forward to joining you on this upcoming trip to Scandinavia! (R) Friday, June 15 OSLO EMBARK Oslo sightseeing includes the Fram Museum; City Hall, where the Nobel Prize is awarded annually; and Vigeland Sculpture Park, with more than 200 sculptures by Gustav Vigeland ( ). Embark Le Boréal. (B,D) Saturday, June 16 GOTEBORG, SWEDEN In Goteborg s old Haga district, stroll among fashion boutiques and bohemian cafés nestled in the ground floors of traditional wood houses. On majestic Gustave-Adolphe square, admire elegant neoclassical buildings before paying a visit to the municipal museum. Goteborg is famous for its fish and shellfish, and we will have the opportunity to sample some before returning to the ship. (B,L,D) Sunday, June 17 ARENDAL, NORWAY KRISTIANSAND Call at the largest open-air museum in Norway, Vest Agder Cultural Heritage Museum, where some 30 historical houses representing lifestyles from around the country have been gathered in one place. In Kristiansand s historic city center the Posebyen stroll through Torvet Market, bustling with local farmers selling everything from flowers and plants to homemade jams and honey. End at the seaside fortress of Christiansholm. (B,L,D) Monday, June 18 STAVANGER Begin with an introduction to life during the Iron Age at Ullandhaug, where reconstructed houses give a sense of the lives of its earliest inhabitants. From Ullandhaug Hill, enjoy magnificent views over Hafrsfjord and encounter the Swords-in-Stone monument, commemorating Viking King Harald Haarfagre s 872 defeat of the last of the regional princes and founding of the Kingdom of Norway. Walk along Old Stavanger to see its wooden houses dating to the 18 th and 19 th centuries. (B,L,D) Tuesday, June 19 ALESUND Perched at the top of Norway s Western Fjord country, Alesund is located at the mouth of the Storfjord with the Sunnmøre Mountains as a backdrop. After a fire in 1904, Alesund was rebuilt in an Art Nouveau style, with myriad turrets, spires, and ornamentation giving the town its distinctive character. From Alesund s center, we proceed to Mount Aksla, where the promontory of Fjellstua affords views of the islands and surrounding blue waters. Continue to Giske and Godoy Islands and the fishing village of Alnes. (B,L,D) Wednesday, June 20 HELLESYLT GEIRANGER Journey first to Hornindalsvatnet, one of the deepest lakes in Europe, then continue along the River Stryn to Nordfjord and along the shores of Lake Stryn, whose emerald color (due to the melting Jostedalen glacier) is typical of the region. Climb through a seemingly endless landscape of mountains, waterfalls, and lakes before reaching Lake Djupvaten. Our final stop is at Mount Dalsnibba whose great height affords exceptional views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks. (B,L,D) Thursday, June 21 OLDEN Briksdalsbreen Glacier lies at the end of enchanting Oldedalen valley and is part of the Jostedal ice field the largest glacier on the European mainland. The glacier slope plunges some 3,937 feet down to the lush Briksdal Valley. Our scenic drive through Oldedalen valley to the Briksdal glacier passes through fields of wildflowers, along crystal clear lakes, and near cascading waterfalls. You may enjoy the view from the comfort of a mountain lodge or venture to walk to the glacier s edge. 7 TERMS & CONDITIONS Compagnie du PONANT, PONANT Group USA, LLC, and PONANT USA, LLC are hereinafter collectively referred to as PONANT GROUP. Please read carefully the following terms and conditions, which constitute the sole, legally enforceable agreements between the passenger and PONANT GROUP and the tour s sponsoring organization. PAYMENT SCHEDULE: In order to secure a booking, the guest is required to pay a deposit of 25% of tour fare. Final payment is due 90 days prior to departure. CANCELLATION, MODIFICATION PENALTIES & REFUNDS: All cancellations or modifications must be in writing. Any and all guests not reporting for departure or prevented from reporting for departure or waiving for any reason whatsoever the benefit of services included in the program cannot claim any refund. PONANT GROUP shall not be required to refund any monies to any guests who must leave the cruise prematurely for any reason, nor shall PONANT GROUP be held responsible for any costs, fees, damages or causes of action which result from the transportation expenses incurred by guest s early departure. For any deposited or fully paid booking, cancellation penalties will be assessed as noted below. These cancellation penalties are applicable on all services booked with PONANT GROUP. From confirmation of booking date until 91 days prior departure: 10% of full fare days prior departure: 50% of full fare Within 60 days prior to departure: 100% of full fare. TRAVEL INSURANCE: Passengers shall be responsible for subscribing to cancellation/luggage/assistance repatriation/medical insurance(s). ITINERARY: PONANT GROUP reserves the right to withdraw and/ or cancel a sailing to make changes in the itinerary whenever, in its sole judgment, or in the judgment of the vessel owner or operator, conditions warrant it. INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS/LIMIT OF LIABILITY: The passenger agrees that PONANT GROUP acts as agent and/or trustee for any person, ground and maritime agents and subcontractors, who provide any service forming, or in connection with, any part of the cruise. Transportation services to the port of departure, transfers to the ship, including, as applicable, hotel room and restaurant bookings or guided tours, are performed by independent suppliers who are not employees of PONANT GROUP. In this respect, PONANT GROUP acts only as an agent and shall not be held liable for said services or for the acts or omissions of sub-contractors or other contractors. PONANT GROUP shall not be held liable for bodily injury to, or death of passengers, or for loss of, or damage to luggage or other personal belongings, unless it is proved that the carrier has infringed statutory obligations or that it or one of its employees or agents has committed gross negligence. However, in the event the liability of PONANT GROUP is incurred, such liability is limited (details available upon request). PONANT GROUP shall in any case not be liable for failure of an improper performance when the same is due to or caused by the fault of the passenger; the unforeseeable or unavoidable fault of a third party unconnected with the provision of any services to be provided under the contract; unusual and unforeseeable circumstances beyond the control of PONANT GROUP; an event of Force Majeure such as a war, threat of war, riots, civil commotion, acts of God, terrorist activities, natural and nuclear disaster, fire, technical problems with transport, closure of ports, strikes and any industrial action, or any other event beyond the control of PONANT GROUP. RATES: The prices given at the time of booking are based on economic conditions known on February 1, 2017 and are subject to change. These conditions are, amongst others, the cost of transport and fuel, relevant dues and taxes for the proposed operation (port taxes, embarkation and disembarkation taxes, entrance costs to tourist sites), currency exchange rates relevant to the pricing of these programs. PONANT GROUP reserves the right within the legal limits of applicable laws to vary the prices if necessary. All variation of the cost of transport, fuel, taxes, dues and visa costs will be passed on within the voyage cost. Additionally, any surcharge levied will be increased to include an amount to cover agent s commission. Any change in fare cannot be imposed less than 60 days prior to departure.
