3 3 USS EVERGLADES AD24 Destroyer Tender Plaque was Donated by the late Lyle L Aley MR3 who served aboard the Everglades from 1958 to 1960 Repair Division, Lyle passed away in 2012 and it was not until last year his widow (Bernadette) was going through Lyles old Navy mementos that she came across the Plaque and his Cruise book. Bernadette contacted the Combined Association and our ships historian Gary Adams via the Web. The Association is a Confederacy of Old Navy Tenders (Repair Ships) AV7 USS Currituck, AV12 USS Pine Island and The Everglades AD24 (The AV s are Sea Plane Tenders) We are all Navy and our crews served aboard these ships from WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. The Plaque was Transferred into care of our ships historian who took the task of cleaning and polishing the brass Plaque which had been painted black and not been taken care of for almost 50 + years. There is probably only a handfull of these plaques left, so the our Ships carpenter (Bruce Crocker) selected a rare piece of wood to go with the plaque. The Plaque backboard is made out of Red Pine from Cass W. Virginia and is over 250 years old. Plaque was made of Bronze Foundered aboard the Everglades in Lyle Aley worked in the Machine Shop where the Plaque was forged. He may have had a hand in its foundering it as trainees were tasked in making such items. The Plaque portrays the ships Logo that was first introduced in 1964/65. The Plaque depicts an Alligator with a Ship (Destroyer) in one arm and a Wrench in the other. With USS Everglades at the top of the Chevron and AD24, her hull Number on the bottom. The Plaque designer is currently unknown. The Everglades after its Decommissioning in 1970 was taken to Philadelphia where she was used as a repair barge until She was towed to breaker yard in India (See Last Run) Everglades Web Site. The Plaque now resides at the Everglades National Park. The Park is one of the best preserved relics of the Cold War in Florida. An historic Nike Hercules Missile Site, called Alpha Battery or HM-69, remains virtually the same as it was when site was closed in The Plaque was presented to the Museum in Lyle Aley Name. This missile base was built by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, completed in 1964 at the height of the Cold War, immediately following the Cuban Missile Crisis of October, At a time when national security against Soviet attack was America's main priority, the United States Army chose this strategic site within Everglades National Park, located 160 miles from the Cuban coast, to build an anti-aircraft missile site. So I look it up and pay it a visit if you are in Florida and Everglades. But the resting place of the Indianapolis had remained a mystery. That was until Saturday, when a team led by Paul G. Allen, the billionaire co-founder of Microsoft, announced that it had found unmistakable wreckage of the Indianapolis 18,000 feet deep in the Philippine Sea, rekindling memories of the Navy s worst disaster at sea. Only 316 out of 1196 men were saved after an aviator spotted them by chance. Loyce Edward Deen, An Aviation Machinist Mate 2nd Class, USNR, was a gunner on a TBM Avenger. On November 5, 1944, Deen's squadron participated in a raid on Manila where his plane was hit multiple times by anti-aircraft fire while attacking a Japanese cruiser. Deen was killed. The Avenger's pilot, Lt.; Robert Cosgrove, managed to return to his carrier, the USS Essex. Both Deen and the plane had been shot up so badly that it was decided to leave him in the plane. It is the only time in U.S. Navy history (and probably U.S. military history) that an aviator was buried in his aircraft after being killed in action.

5 5 PHOTOS FROM THE CREW Here is a Old Photo of John Seidensticker hanging out in the Diesel Room Aboard the Everglades, John helped Sink the Old Emergency Diesel Generator to 50 Hertz so we could watch the Moon landing as we were in the Med at the time,. With out changing the AC the TV picture would roll and watching the Broadcast would have been imposable,. The ET s and Electricians ran power to TV s that were set up all over the ship. (Thanks John) The commissioning ceremony marks the acceptance of a ship as a unit of the operating forces of the United States Navy. At the moment of the breaking of the commission pennant, A Navy Ship becomes the responsibility of the commanding officer, who, together with the ship's officers and men, has the duty of making and keeping her ready for any service required by our nation in peace or in war. The commission pennant is believed to date from the 17th century, when the Dutch were at war with the English. The Dutch Admiral Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp hoisted a broom at his masthead to indicate his intention to sweep the English from the sea. This gesture was answered by the English admiral who hoisted a horsewhip, indicating his intention to subdue the Dutch. The English were victorious, and ever since, the narrow "Coachwhip" pennant has been adopted by all nations as the distinctive mark of a ship of war. Seven crew members went ashore and mined railroad tracks which resulted in a train being blown up while they were rowing back to the boat. No other boat ever received credit for "SINKING" a train..
