3 U.S. Tuesday, May 25 Depart the U.S. for Paris, France. PARIS, FRANCE/HONFLEUR Wednesday, May 26 On arrival in Paris, transfer to Honfleur and embark the M.S. LE DIAMANT. Sail this evening. ISLES OF SCILLY, ENGLAND Thursday, May 27 Following a morning at leisure on the ship, arrive at Tresco, one of the Islands of Scilly, which is well-known for its tropical Abbey Gardens. Spend the afternoon and early evening on Tresco or the nearby Island of St. Mary s, or join the optional scenic walk to the old Benedictine Abbey for a guided tour of its famous flora. Many of the garden s 20,000 exotic plants would stand no chance of surviving on the Cornish mainland less than 30 miles away. But here, they thrive in the unique climate afforded to Tresco by the Gulf Stream and the sheltering wind breaks, walls and terraces carved from a rocky slope that encircles the Abbey s ruins. Return to the ship this evening for the Captain s welcome reception and dinner. CORK, IRELAND Friday, May 28 Cork is a thriving commercial center and the second-largest city in Ireland. This morning, you have the opportunity to join the optional city tour and walk among the food stalls of the bustling English Market, where quick-witted vendors engage their customers in lively banter. Admire the beautiful Honan Chapel, which was built in 1915 and represents Celtic Revival architecture at its finest, with its richly ornamented interior and beautifully preserved 12th-century stained glass windows. This afternoon, you may continue to explore Cork on your own or visit the Cobh Heritage Centre on an optional excursion. Set sail for Dublin late this afternoon. DUBLIN, IRELAND Saturday, May 29 Built astride the River Liffey, Ireland s capital has retained its rich heritage of Georgian architecture while confidently playing a major role in the New Europe. On an optional excursion, set out this morning for an overview of the city. Visit the National Museum of Ireland, known for its exhibits of Celtic and Viking artifacts, including magnificent gold torques and the incomparably beautiful 8th-century Tara Brooch. Stroll through the stately quadrangles of Trinity College and, in its library, view the incandescent illuminations of the 9th-century Book of Kells. The afternoon is free for independent pursuits in Dublin. Choose to wander along colorful Grafton Street or savor a pint of Guinness in a typical neighborhood pub. Depart Dublin this evening. An ancient castle beside a placid loch embodies the quiet beauty of the Scottish Highlands. HOLYHEAD, WALES Sunday, May 30 Spend the morning in Holyhead or join the optional excursion and travel east across the isle of Anglesey and over the Menai Strait on your tour of North Wales. Here, in one of the cradles of Celtic culture, the people hold fast to the old ways, and Welsh remains their mother tongue. Visit Conwy Castle and Bodnant Garden, one of the finest examples of 19th-century Victorian landscape artistry. On this afternoon s optional excursion, drive through the Snowdonia Mountains glacier-sculpted peaks and valleys covered by dark green conifers interspersed with winding streams and cascading waterfalls. Stop at the imposing Caernarfon Castle, an impregnable 13th-century fortress built by Edward I of England as a defense against the marauding Welsh. In 1969, the castle was the site of the investiture of Charles as the Prince of Wales. Return to the ship and depart for Scotland. IONA, SCOTLAND/ISLE OF MULL Monday, May 31 Go ashore on the Hebridean island of Iona, birthplace of Scottish Christianity. In A.D. 563, the Irish monk Columba founded a monastery here, where scribes would spend entire lifetimes painstakingly copying and illuminating not only religious tracts, but transcribing the ancient Celtic sagas into written form, preserving a record of oral bardic tradition. In later years, Iona became the burial place of Scotland s kings, including Duncan and Macbeth. Join the optional excursion to the Abbey and view the intricate Celtic crosses in the churchyard and stroll through the serene, restored abbey. Afterward, cross by ferry to the neighboring Isle of Mull, and drive east along the shore of Loch Scridain, watching for shorebirds, seals and red deer. Visit Torosay Castle, a fine example of Scottish Baronial architecture. Continue to 12th-century Duart Castle, the ancestral home of the Clan Maclean. A boxed lunch will be served in one of the castles. Arrive this afternoon in the sheltered port of Tobermory, where houses painted in vivid shades of blue, red and green are nestled between the hills and the harbor. After free time in Tobermory, reboard the ship and set sail for Skye. PORTREE, ISLE OF SKYE Tuesday, June 1 Known as the Winged Island after its birdlike shape, Skye is the largest and most scenic of the Inner Hebrides.
