6 You are probably familiar with the aphorism a rising tide lifts all boats. In the investment ocean, the truth of the matter is that not all boats rise the same amount, and some may fall. This means the initial asset mix you (or your advisor) created will inevitably change over time as a result of differing returns among various investments. When the percentage of assets you have allocated to particular investments change, the risk you are taking increases or decreases. If not addressed in a timely manner, you may fail to reach your goals. Rebalancing is the process of reducing (selling) certain assets in order to increase (buy) others. The goal is to reset the percentage of each asset class back to original levels. This is also a good time to reassess your investment strategy in light of changes in your personal situation. Ask yourself these three questions: Rebalancing is not a foolproof strategy, but over time, it tends to reduce risk by helping you scale back on overvalued market segments and increase your holdings in areas that could be due for a rebound. with cash, real estate, and alternatives like precious metals. It is also a good idea to diversify your holdings within each asset class. For example, the average investor wouldn t want to own only one technology stock; a safer bet would be to own a mix of technology stocks across that market sector. If your holdings include mutual funds or exchangetraded funds (ETFs), you already have some diversification. But ensuring the funds you own provide the right allocation of asset classes and foreign vs domestic investments is up to you and your advisor. The first step toward reaching your goals is planning.
