2 Dear Ritmo Cubanos, It's with great pleasure that we would like to welcome you to Ritmo Cuba - The 4th International Cuban Dance Festival. More than 5 years ago we had the idea to join together the best latin dancers in Cuba with the best latin dancers from across the world for one week of dancing, parties and workshops in Havana - a place considered by many to be the birthplace of latin dance. This week, that dream becomes a reality as we welcome some of the world's salsa stars along with the best salsa instructors from each of the top salsa schools in Cuba to teach and perform at Ritmo Cuba. We encourage you to make the most of the crazy schedule that we have developed for you...more than 100 hours of workshops to choose from, tours and excursions each afternoon and of course trips to the hottest Havana night spots each night. On hand to help at all times will be our Ritmo Cuba Staff - identificable by their badges and possibly their shenanigans. Also the Ritmo Cuba desk at the Melia Cohiba Hotel will be open each day between 9am - 1pm to help you with any questions that you might have. A quick word about Cuba, in our opinion Cuba is one of the most wonderful and delightful places in the world. Having said that, please do not expect everything to go perfectly. Sometimes you won't be able to buy water in the shops, other times the bus might arrive a bit late and sometimes there will be no electricity for music and a drum will have to suffice. These day to day challenges are a part of everyday Cuban life and locals typically just smile and move on with their days. If you are able to do the same, then you will not only have a great time over the next week but you will also have some great stories when you get home. Ritmo Cuba Team SAFETY Havana is a very safe city, however like anywhere in the world, petty crime is always present and therefore a few basic measures should ensure you have a hassle free Ritmo Cuba. Please make sure that any valuables are locked up in your casa particular including documents, money and mobiles phones. Only take out on the street what you will need for that day, a modest camera, some spending money and of course your Ritmo Cuba wristband. Beginners Do you have a beat in your heart but feeling like you had two left feet? These classes are made for you. In just few sessions you will be ready to mix it up on the dance floor. Intermediate Got the basics down but looking to flare, spins and movement to your dancing the intermediate classes are for you. Advanced Not scared of anything? Lets see if you can keep up as some of the best in the world show you their most complicated steps. Not for the faint of heart. Open Open to everyone with a Passion for dance. Sharing this class with other participants with different dance levels you will learn not only from your instructor, but also from every person around you. Transport & Getting Around For all tours and trips we will leave from (and return to) in front of the Melia Cohiba Hotel. Please note that the bus will depart at the time noted on the program and the last bus will leave the location at the time speci fied on the program. Please be on time so you don t miss any of the exciting activities (or your ride home after a night out). However, you can make your own itinerary taking taxis or public transport. In Cuba, we have a very interesting taxi system. Option1: Private taxi In the front of any hotel you will find taxis either official yellow taxi or private taxis. In all cases you should try to negotiate a price before you hope in. Assistants Ritmo Cuba wants you to learn and more importantly, enjoy this experience, so we have created an assistant program in order that there are dance partners for everyone during classes. Please, take note that they are not instructors, in some cases they are just students like you. Our strict policy is assistants must continually rotate partners so they dance with as many participants as possible during the week. Don t be shy, at the evening parties please ask them to dance that is what they are there for! We will also offer opportunities during the week when you can recognize assistants who have done a great job in the class or during the evening parties. It is very important that you do not request, or put pressure on assistants to dance exclusively with you or your group. This is likely to get them into trouble for violating our festival policy. Option 2: Colective taxi These mostly are old american cars with a specific route through main streets in the city. There is a route along Linear Avenue, close to Melia Cohiba. You will have to share it with other passangers and you simply ask the driver to stop when you are approaching your destination. The cost usually goes from 0.50 cuc cents to 1 cuc. Just ask at the Ritmo Cuba desk and we can give you more information if you are interested in travelling like a local!
