2 We've been hosting successful events for over 400 years! Thunder Bay's location at the crossroads of the continent makes us a perfect host city. We're situated near the centre of Canada and so close to Minnesota that you could say we're in the "upper" Upper Mid-West! Since the 1600s, we've been central to European exploration of North America and, in the 1800s, the home of the annual Great Rendezvous, the meeting of the voyageurs and partners of the Northwest Company. THUNDER BAY CANADA GEOGRAPHY The City of Thunder Bay is strategically located near the geographical centre of Canada, on the shore of Lake Superior - the western terminus of the St. Lawrence Seaway System. Thunder Bay is a regional centre and the "Gateway to the Great Northwest", a physical area nearly the size of Europe. The City is also the access point to and from the American Mid-West by way of the Pigeon River border crossing, 45 minutes away by road. CLIMATE Thunder Bay has a continental climate with warm to hot summers and cooler winters with a Great Lake moderating influence. Summer daytime temperatures vary from 15C to 30C, while nights tend to be cooler and less humid than southern locations. The summer period is well suited to both active and passive outdoor recreational pursuits. Recent winter daytime temperatures have ranged from springlike to relatively cold with sunny days. This type of climate is well suited to all kinds of active outdoor recreational pursuits. Spring and autumn are short with cool days and evenings. Winter outdoor recreation often extends well into April while summer culminates in a spectacular show of colours in the fall. Precipitation is highly variable from year to year. The annual average rainfall is mm while the average snowfall is 213 cm. On average, Thunder Bay is the sunniest location in eastern Canada with over 2,200 hours of bright sunshine. Situated beside the Kaministiquia River, Fort William is a magnificent re-creation of the North West Company s impressive inland headquarters from 1803 to It s the heyday of the Canadian fur trade, and Fort William is at the centre of it all! POPULATION Thunder Bay is the 10th largest city in Ontario and the largest metropolitan centre in Northwestern Ontario. 3 TABLEOFCONTENTS HISTORY Thunder Bay's central location in the centre of the continent and at the head of the Great Lakes made it a natural meeting and trading site as far back as the Paleo-Indian civilization 11,000 years ago. The first Europeans arrived in the 17th century and established a series of fur trading posts at the place they named Baie de Tonnere, or Thunder Bay. In 1798, the North West Company built Fort William near the mouth of the Kaministiquia River, which quickly became a lively community of Scottish traders, French voyageurs and Native trappers. Today, that era is revisited at historic Fort William Historical Park, the world's largest recreated fur trading post. By the mid-19th century, the fur trade was fading and mining becoming the focus. Finds of copper, silver and gold drew prospectors from around the world. Later, the final links in the nation's railroad and the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway helped make Thunder Bay a principal grain port for shipments from the prairies to the rest of the world. More economic developments followed as manufacturing, shipbuilding and pulp and paper industries grew. ARTS Thunder Bay Community Auditorium - At the heart of our region stands the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium, an impressive 1,500 seat performing arts centre. Since its opening in 1985 by Bob Hope, the Auditorium has been host to thousands of events - from Broadway productions to live concerts - with a total attendance surpassing well over one million. Considered to be one of the finest concert halls in North America, the Auditorium's acoustics are truly exceptional. The designers created a warm and intimate space in harmony with a wide range of technological features, state-of-the-art sound, lighting and theatre systems equipment to fulfill the range of requirements of local presenters and large touring companies. In addition to numerous live performances, many other events take place each year. The Auditorium's versatility comes into play for these events which include meetings, conventions, business presentations, conferences, weddings, graduations, convocations, socials, banquets and travelogues; both in the lobby spaces and on stage. The Thunder Bay Community Auditorium is home of the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. Thunder Bay Art Gallery - dedicated to the collection and exhibition of contemporary First Nations art. The Gallery also presents exhibitions by local and regional artists and hosts traveling exhibitions. Thunder Bay Museum - The Museum preserves and interprets the history of Thunder Bay and district, from prehistoric times to the present. It collects and displays artifacts related to the everyday life of the region, pioneers and community leaders, industry, technology, aboriginal life, the military and transportation. In addition, the Museum also hosts a variety of lectures, adult craft classes, education and outreach programs. Folklore Festival Thunder Bay community Auditorium CULTURE As the era of the fur trade drew to a close, growing industries drew immigrants from all over the world, but the forest industry was a special attraction for the Finns. Even today, Thunder Bay boasts one of the largest settlements of Finnish people outside Finland. The omnipresent saunas, the shops of "Little Finland" on Bay Street and the prevalence of nordic-style skiing are just a few of the ways the city shows its Finnish heritage. Ethnic diversity is one of Thunder Bay's greatest assets, and it shows most clearly in the cultural events that visitors have come to enjoy. The Folklore Festival, a world tour of nations, attracts tourists and locals alike every spring in a celebration of song, dance and cuisine. Ojibwa Keeshigun, a traditional pow-wow held at Fort William Historical Park, offers a colourful glimpse of Native culture. City Parklands and Greenspaces Centennial Park - approximately 147 acres of parkland along the shores of the beautiful Current River in the heart of the city s north side. A recreational trail, used for hiking, mountain biking and cross-country skiing, follows the Current River to the Cascades Conservation Area. Marina Park - spectacular views of the harbour and the Sleeping Giant from the lookout decks and walkways. The old CN Station on site features art gallery, shops, a children's museum and restaurant. The park is also home to Prince Arthur's Landing, a modern full-service marina facility. Hillcrest Park - one of the finest scenic views of the city, the harbour and the Sleeping Giant. The Park features a unique Sunken Gardens, with more than 70 Sunken Gardens varieties of flowers, historical artifacts and a children's playground. Soroptimist International Friendship Gardens The era of the fur-trade comes to life at Fort William Historical Park Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park - one of Canada's most spectacular falls, the "Niagara of the North", Kakabeka Falls is a spectacular 40 metre (131 ft.) high waterfall and steep rock-walled river canyon. Excellent viewing advantages are provided from the boardwalk and observation pods. The Falls are very accessible from a parking lot just within the Park entrance. Adjacent to the Falls are swimming, camping and picnicking facilities. Hiking trails include a portage used by voyageurs on the fur trade route. Enjoy cross-country skiing in the winter. Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park - a spectacular natural attraction, Ouimet Canyon is a 150 metre (492 ft.) wide gorge with 100 metre (328 ft.) high canyon walls. A pathway leads from the parking lot to viewing pods that provide awe-inspiring views directly over the sheer cliffs of the canyon. Nearby is Eagle Canyon Adventures, featuring Canada's longest suspension footbridge. Pigeon River Provincial Park - history and nature meet at Pigeon River, route of the voyageurs, at the western end of Lake Superior, adjacent to the U.S. Border. Follow their portages around two major waterfalls - High Falls and Middle Falls. Hike from the misty gorge of High Falls to the shores of Lake Superior. Trails originate from the Pigeon River Visitor Centre. and there's more! Fort William Historical Park - voted one of Canada s top ten attractions! Thunder Bay Tourist Pagoda - one of the nation's most distinctive and controversial landmarks, Thunder Bay's Tourist Pagoda, at the foot of historic Red River Road and Water Streets, can rightfully claim its place in history as the oldest operating tourist bureau in Canada. It has continually served visitors to the city since Mt. McKay Scenic Lookout - known as Thunder Mountain to the Ojibwa Nation, this natural attraction with a panoramic view of 1,000 feet, overlooking Thunder Bay was developed by local Natives.
