3 About VolTra Founded on 16 April 2009, VolTra is a non-governmental voluntary organization (NGO) and a registered charitable institution in Hong Kong (IR File No.: 91/11726). VolTra is dedicated to promote international voluntary services in Hong Kong through a well-established worldwide network of international workcamp organizations. VolTra together with other international workcamp organizations all over the world provide over 3,000 international workcamps and voluntary service projects every year in more than 100 countries. At the same time, VolTra also organizes international workcamps in Hong Kong for both local and overseas volunteers to participate in the voluntary services and cultural exchange activities in Hong Kong. 5 General Info of our projects TYPES OF PROJECTS Farming in the city becomes a trend in Hong Kong in recent years as there is growing concerns over rural urban balance. Therefore, agriculture and environment are our major types of projects. ACCOMODATION AND FOOD All our workcamps required volunteers to prepare sleeping bags and mats on their own. Basic living conditions, like electricity and tap water will be provided. Volunteers will cook and clean in turns. AIRPORT Hong Kong International Airport is well connected to most of the major cities in the world as well as the local metro system. WORK SCHEDULE Volunteers will work 6-7 hours per day. During their free time, they can organize activities on their own with the aid from local volunteers and camp leader. TRANSPORTATION Hong Kong is named 'best city in the world for commuters with public transportation covering the whole city. Most of the project sites can be reached in 1-2 hours from the airport. INTERNET There is no internet provided in all of our project sites. SIM card with data can be purchased in convenient and phone stores. INSURANCE The local organizers of VolTra s international workcamps will only provide very basic and limited insurance to compensate losses in case of accidents or injuries at the workcamp sites during the workcamp period. Workcampers are therefore required to purchase travel and medical insurance of reasonable coverage before joining the workcamps. EXTRA FEE There is no extra fee in our international workcamps. For 4-day workcamp, extra fee is charged as HKD950 (~USD121). VolTra 3

7 Project Description HKVT17-01 Long Valley Rice Harvesting 12 JUL JUL 2017 Project Activities Accommodation Location Terminal Remark Local Organizer The project is co-organized by VolTra and The Conservancy Association (CA). CA, founded in 1968, is the non-government environmental organization with the longest history in Hong Kong. This nature conservation management project has been in place since 2005, with the aim to conserve Hong Kong historical site of paddy rice produce Long Valley. The site composes of 400+ linking farmlands as well as accommodates 200+ bird species, including a range of international conserved species. Through participating in harvesting and ecological monitoring work, we hope to alleviate Long Valley s landscape and biodiversity situation. Other than a series of active habitat and species management measures, volunteers will also have the precious chance to interact with Hong Kong indigenous villagers, who are descendants of local residents during 1890s. It will be a unique gateway to learn more about the indigenous culture in the concrete jungle. 1. Rice and crop harvesting 2. Interact with local Hong Kong indigenous residents Workcampers will stay in a dormitory at Sheungshui near Long Valley. The living environment is very basic and simplistic but in a peaceful rural living style. Sleeping bags are required. Long Valley is located at the northern urban edge of Hong Kong. With a total area of 150 hectares, it is the largest agricultural freshwater wetland in Hong Kong. Hong Kong International Airport Basic living condition in the nature. Workcamp activities involve largely outdoor physical work. The Conservancy Association (CA) is dedicated to the protection of the environment and the conservation of natural and cultural heritage. CA s mission is to enhance the quality of life of both this and future generations, and to ensure that Hong Kong shoulders her regional and global environmental responsibilities. 8 HKVT17-02 Raising Fishermen s Community 07 AUG AUG 2017 Project Activities Accommodation Location Terminal Remark Local Organizer The project is co-organized by VolTra and Lamma Fisherfolk s Village. Hong Kong was a fishing village hundred years ago but fishery industry is now on the decline. Many of the traditional culture and history is faded with time. Our aim for this project is mainly to educate the public on the culture and history of fishery in Hong Kong, as well as to enable them to appreciate the natural beauty of the Island. At the end of this workcamp, our music partner, De Tesla, will organize a special outdoor concert on the floating dock in the Fisherfolk s Village to re-define the identity and value of fishery culture though the dialogue between Hong Kong people, fishermen and foreigners on our origin, fishery industry. There will be a fundraising DIY market to share fishery cultural product. 1. Organize fishery conservation awareness campaign 2. Repair the facilities on the floating dock and accommodation 3. Organize cultural exchange activities 4. Visit elderly in the island 5. Participate in the outdoor concert by giving comments and insights about Hong Kong and the fishery industry 6. Lamma Island, Hong Kong Hong Kong International Airport Volunteers with photography / music skills e.g. guitar, will have an advantage Situated at the beautiful Sok Kwu Wan on Lamma Island, Lamma Fisherfolk s Village is a showcase of the local fisherfolk culture and the history of fishery industry in Hong Kong. Occupying an area of over 20,000ft², the Village comprises authentic fishing junk, traditional dragon boats, an exhibition hall, themed folklore booths, fishing rafts and dwellings. Visitor can learn and appreciate the heritages and livings of the boat community of Hong Kong. [Official Website: DE TESLA is A Way of Life. Aimed to present a new possibility of music performance to HK audience, DE TESLA consists of two important components, society-oriented and self-sufficient. They are devoted to explore the multifaceted nature of music by hosting social-concept music concerts - Barter Concert and WITHIN10mins series - Music is more than entertainment while self-financing is a way to maintain independence in music creation and hosting conceptual concerts, at the same time to live out the value of self-sufficiency. 9 HKVT17-03 Saving our homes in Ping Che 18 AUG AUG 2017 Project Activities Accommodation Location Terminal Remark Local Organizer The project is co-organized by VolTra and Ta Kwu Ling/Ping Che Alliance for Saving Our Home. The aims of Ta Kwu Ling/Ping Che Alliance for Saving Our Home are to protect villagers home and culture and to conserve the environment. Currently, the government and the villages are in discussion on the North East New Territories New Development Areas Planning. 1. Beautify and renovate of village road or houses 2. Rehabilitate agricultural land 3. Assist in community liaison Workcampers are accommodated in village house of visitors centre. Sleeping bags and mats are needed. In contrast to the densely populated areas of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, Ping Che is a sub-urban area characterized by natural scenery, charming small villages and stunning sunset. The place is also situated just next to Shenzhen, China. Hong Kong International Airport There are a few pet dogs living in the visitors centre. Founded in 2012, Ta Kwu Ling/Ping Che Alliance for Saving Our Home is a selfinitiated alliance by Ping Che villagers in Hong Kong. The visitor s centre is set up to let the public know more about the lives and works of villages in Ta Kwu Ling/Ping Che. 10 HKVT17-04 Wheel-Power Winter Workcamp 23 DEC JAN 2018 Project This is a new project initiated by Hong Kong volunteers, who is inspired by the Switzerland barrier free workcamp. While Hong Kong has one of the most developed transportation system in the world, its barrier-free facility across the city still has room for improvement. This project thus aims to promote the concept of an inclusive community that accommodates the needs of people with disabilities. Part of the project also allows workcampers to experience the daily difficulties faced by physically challenged individuals. This serves as a learning opportunity for workcampers to truly understand that our physical differences do not limit our potential or ability to involve in activities. The workcamp will take place around different locations in Hong Kong in order to provide a holistic and comprehensive experience to workcampers. Hong Kong International Airport We hope to recruit volunteers who - are interested in working with people with different disabilities - have disabilities and have independent daily life skills - are interested in barrier-free concept and willing to share and learn more Wheel Power Challenge is founded based on the inspiration from a barrier free workcamp in Switzerland. A young physiotherapist, Ms Sarah Chu along with other friends founded this organization with the aim to promote a barrier free community in Hong Kong. 11 HKVT17-05 Long Valley Rice Harvest Festival 03 JAN JAN 2018 Project The project is co-organized by VolTra and The Conservancy Association (CA). 12 VTMV17-02 Ma On Shan Living in a Mining Village 27 MAY MAY 2017 Project The project is co-organized by VolTra and Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service Hong Kong (ELCHK). ELCHK is the non-government organization with more than 40 service units across the territory. This renovation project has been launched since 2012, which aims to energize the historical buildings and bring out the precious spirit of hardship and perseverance demonstrated by the Ma On Shan miners in the past. Volunteers will explore Hong Kong s industrial, religious and country heritage as well as natural experiences. It will be a unique gateway to learn more about the mining history and exploring the unique natural resources of Ma On Shan. Activities 1. Participating in guided tours: Walking in the mountains, to explore the story of the mining village and the church 2. Model making: Hand making model of the mining site and landmarks nearby 3. Site maintenance: Weeding, cleaning the floor or walls and learn how to plate in a creative way Accommodation Workcampers will stay in a dormitory in the project site. The living environment is very basic and simplistic but in a peaceful rural living style. Sleeping bags are required. Location Ma On Shan is located at the eastern urban edge of Hong Kong. Ma On Shan was once a mining area, operated for 70 years from 1906 to The Grace Youth Camp is situated just next to the old mines. The camp was a church in the past, offering help and assistance to the miners and the villagers. It is constructed with five buildings, included camping area and a chapel. The Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service Hong Kong are to provide integrated services to the grassroots and the disadvantaged with an innovative, caring and people-oriented approach.
