2 summer camps registration Between Friends Camp Bonaventure & Camp Fun zamust Registration: Wednesday, March 7, :30pm 6:30pm Participants aged 7+ years are able to register for a maximum of three sessions of Camp Bonaventure. Participants under 7 years are able to register for a maximum of six weeks of Camp Bonaventure. Between Friends Adventurers & Adult Summer Programs Registration: Wednesday, April 18, :00am (see page 5) Between Friends considerably subsidizes summer programs through fundraising efforts. Friends in Motion: Bowl-A-Thon (see page 12) is our biggest source of subsidy for Between Friends Camp Bonaventure, Between Friends Camp Fun zamust, and Between Friends Adventurers. how to register? phone: During phone registration, if the phone is ringing, please stay on the line to hold your place in the queue. Registration will continue weekdays, 9:00am to 4:00pm, until programs are full. Registration is complete only when the registrar confirms your request. online: Important: You must be a 2018 member in good standing to register for any summer programs. Unpaid fees: Fees must be paid in full. Unpaid fees are sufficient cause to prevent future program registration. cancellation policy To cancel registration you must call A 15% cancellation fee will apply to ALL cancellations. Cancellations made less than two weeks prior to the start of a program will forfeit a refund. Refunds will be provided only when vacancies can be filled. If Between Friends cancels a program due to low registration, you may transfer to another program if space is available or receive a full refund. We will make every effort to contact you prior to the start date of the program if cancellation is necessary. program fees All program fees are due at the time of registration. Cash or cheque payment must be received by the Between Friends office within five business days or registration will be cancelled. If you require payment plan options or Fee Assistance please let us know. fee assistance Between Friends will ensure that every camper with a wish to attend summer camp is granted the opportunity. As a result, there are payment options and fee assistance available. Fee assistance is available for two sessions per camp. To apply, register in the camp(s) and indicate the need for financial assistance. An application form will be provided and must be completed and returned to the main office within five business days. For more information please contact Kim Picone, Operations Manager at non sufficient funds (nsf) policy A charge of $45.00 applies for NSF cheques. The issuer will be given 24 hours to make payment by VISA, MasterCard, money order, certified cheque, or cash, before registration is forfeited. Important information A minimum deposit of $ per week ($ per session) for Camp Bonaventure and $ a week for Camp Funz Amust is due at the time of registration, unless an FSCD addendum stating full coverage can be provided at that time NO EXCEPTIONS. If you would like Between Friends to direct bill FSCD for your camp fees, an FSCD addendum is required within five business days of registration. Important: Your child will not be accepted at camp if; fees have not been paid, and/or a signed FSCD addendum has not been received by the office. 3

3 I.C.A.N! Camps are offered by partnerships with Between Friends and local community camps. Participants with disabilities choose, enroll, and participate without specialized support. Partner Camp Leaders provide the majority of guidance for your camper; however, a Between Friends trained Recreation Inclusion Facilitator (RIF) will be present at each camp for the entire summer to support the inclusion process. Between Friends partners with over 30 social and recreation providers across the city, including all YMCA locations, Trico Centre, Vivo, University of Calgary, MRUKids, and SAIT summer camps! who can participate I.C.A.N! Camp participants must be a Between Friends member. Members of all ages can participate as long as the partner camp offers programs for your age group. Members must have an interest in and desire to participate in activities, and be comfortable with minimal support in a larger than typical ratio. It is recommended that members attend Camp Bonaventure if they need a higher level of support than what inclusion camps can provide. recreation inclusion facilitator (RIF) The RIF supports Partner Camp Leaders by providing advice on creating an inclusive environment. Before the start of camp, the RIF will provide training for their designated partner facility, educating staff on the inclusion process and best practices. The RIF will also be monitoring the inclusion process throughout each day at camp and be available to support staff. I.C.A.N! camp registration Spaces are limited in each I.C.A.N! Partner Camp, so register early. Between Friends offers RIF services for 1-6 weeks of inclusion camps based on availability. 1. Choose the I.C.A.N! Partner Camp of your choice, register, and pay fees accordingly. There is no cost for Between Friends RIF services thanks to our grant from FCSS. 2. Provide Between Friends with full details of your registration, so that we can assign a RIF 3. A week prior to camp, your assigned RIF will be in contact to discuss the inclusion process, participant s abilities, and assess their needs at camp. If you are unsure who your CEC is, please call Between Friends Adventurers programs are for adults 18 years and older who are looking for fun recreational activities, relaxation, and challenge-oriented experiences. The two Adventurers streams; Day Trippers and Vacationers both provide opportunities to expand social development, meet new friends, and reconnect with old ones. Adventurers & Adult Summer W.E.S.O.A.R! Registration: Wednesday, April 18, :00am day trippers Day Trippers is the next evolution of Between Friends Camp Bonaventure. Participants aged years may participate in up to four 1-week sessions during August. Day Trippers meet at Riveredge Park, Ave SW. vacationers Vacationers offers the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing break from the usual, or an adventurous getaway. Groups of eight take excursions that range from sleepovers at a campsite to city tours. All trips are wheelchair accessible. The participant to staff ratio is 1:2 or 1:3. More staff equals more fun for the participants. If required, private support aides are welcome to attend. Throughout July and August, all trips range from one to five days which includes: Day trips: 5 8 hours in duration Overnight trips: Friday to Saturday, or Saturday to Sunday 3 days & 2 nights: Friday to Sunday 4 days and 3 nights: Monday to Thursday, or Friday to Monday 5 days and 4 nights: adult summer programs guide Please visit our website after Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at for information on Vacationers Summer Trips, Day Trippers, and Summer W.E.S.O.A.R! programs. We will be including dates, times, locations, registration limits, and costs so you can easily plan for a summer of fun! It is designed for youth, teens and adults with and without disabilities. Between Friends and Easter Seals Camp Horizon staff are skilled in providing a safe and enriching environment that is inclusive for participants of all abilities. Between Friends Camp Fun zamust is wheelchair accessible. 5 support ratio Between Friends Camp Bonaventure is a fun summer day camp for children and youth, with and without disabilities. Campers experience positive social interactions while engaging in healthy lifestyle activities. They also challenge their abilities and learn new skills. This inclusive setting can be adapted to all ability levels. Through Between Friends Camp Bonaventure, participants build self-esteem and develop a sense of independence and accomplishment. Campers are grouped by age to encourage interaction with their peers and to facilitate ageappropriate programming. activities Between Friends Camp Bonaventure focuses on healthy lifestyle activities that challenge our campers abilities in a safe environment. All activities are monitored by our highly trained staff and include a variety of skill development opportunities such as: physical movement skills, social skills, and building positive identity. Campers will get to experience swimming, sailing, arts and crafts, games, overnight camp outs, campfire sing-a-longs, unstructured free play, and much more! Between Friends Camp Bonaventure even has a horticultural therapy garden and multi-sensory room to meet our campers diverse interests and needs. Between Friends Camp Bonaventure can accommodate campers with a 1:2 to 1:6 ratio with most groups organized into a 1:4 counselor to camper ratio. We use information collected on participant profiles to assist us in structuring ratios within our groups and in providing additional volunteer support as required. If your camper requires a 1:1 support ratio, they are welcome to attend camp with their private support aide. If you are unsure if your camper will require a private support aide, please contact Mark Burzacott, Resource Specialist at t-shirt design contest Your design could be on the new camper t-shirt! Submit a drawing of your favourite part of camp on an 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper. Ensure that the artist s name, age, their parent/guardian s name, and a phone number are on a separate piece of paper submitted with the design. Send all submissions to Hayley Bell, Planning Coordinator by at hbell@betweenfriends.ab.ca or by snail mail. In summer 2018 we are running two 1-week day camps in July. The Northeast Day Camps (Goose & Moose) will start and end their days at the Genesis Centre, 7555 Falconridge Blvd NE. Each week campers will experience two onsite days at the Genesis Centre and join in with other typical group activities at Camp Bonaventure in Riveredge Park. Transportation to offsite activities will be provided. Thank you to Business Fore Calgary Kids for partially funding this programming. Campers attending the overnight will attend camp on Thursday from 9:00am 4:00pm and will stay overnight. Pick up is at 10:00am the next day. There is no camp on the Friday following an overnight. At campfires, campers enjoy a sing-a-long, games, and other activities. Parents and caregivers are always encouraged to attend campfires. During overnights campers spend the night sleeping in a tent. Leaders are always accessible to campers throughout the night. Please note: Minnows, Chipmunks, Goose, and Moose groups do not have their own campfire dates or overnights. However, campers are welcome to attend our other campfire dates. 7 between friends summer splash fundraiser friends in motion: bowl-a-thon Between Friends will be hosting our 4th Annual Friends in Motion: Bowl-A-Thon this March. We had a fantastic time in 2017 and can t wait for you to join us again! All funds raised from this event will directly support the quality summer programming we offer for children, youth, and adults with disabilities. Friday, March 9, :30pm - 9:00pm Century Bowling Ave SE. Register at This event is a great opportunity for teams, corporations, friends, and families to come together and raise funds for Between Friends. Teams of up to five bowlers can register and be paired with a Between Friends member to compete for the highest score in this challenging and fun tournament. Teams are encouraged to dress in costume, come up with a unique team name, and of course, raise funds for a great cause! Challenge friends, family and colleagues to help children, youth, and adults in our community access quality programming. Every dollar raised translates into an unforgettable experience for a person with a disability. 8 volunteer with us how you can help Between Friends Camp Bonaventure To volunteer at Camp Bonaventure, you must be 12 years or older. Junior volunteers are ages and are placed with participants their age or younger. Volunteers ages 16 or older are welcome to volunteer with any age group. As a Camp Bonaventure volunteer, you will be asked to help with supervision, support, creating friendships, and assisting our participants in a variety of camp activities such as: swimming, sailing, horseback riding, and day trips. Volunteers are required to actively participate in all camp activities, and be positive role models. We require our volunteers to commit to a minimum of five days at camp. Between Friends Camp Bonaventure runs July 2 August 24, 2018, Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 pm 4:30 pm. There is a mandatory volunteer training session for new and returning volunteers on June 29, Learning the ropes VIT Program. VOLUNTEERS WANTED! Between Friends Volunteer in Training (VIT) Program Developed for members of Between Friends or members of the public who have a disability and want to learn and develop the necessary skills it takes to become an ongoing, independent and successful volunteer. The mission of the program is to ensure that the selected participants going through the VIT Program are provided the support they need to gain the individual skill sets they want to work on to become a regular volunteer of Between Friends programs. Between Friends Camp Bonaventure runs July 2 August 24, 2018, Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 pm 4:30 pm. We require all VIT Participants to select a 2-week session at camp, for a total commitment of 10 days. There is a mandatory volunteer training session on June 29, The program is open to applicants 16 years of age or older, who are fairly independent and eager to work on their skill development goals. Applicants MUST be willing to participate, and be a role model for all program activities. Did you know? Between Friends relies heavily on the generosity of donors like you to provide affordable quality programming for children, youth and adults with disabilities. Thanks to our donors and supporters, Between Friends subsidizes all programs by an average of 71% and provides additional fee assistance to ensure our programs are accessible to all participants. Ways You Can Help: Make a donation, big or small to Between Friends or become a monthly donor. Visit Host an event (birthday or anniversary party, movie night, etc.) to raise money on behalf of Between Friends Ask your employer if their community investment plan aligns with Between Friends values. Encourage them to donate, match your donations or group volunteer at Between Friends. Plan your corporate team building activities with us. No matter the size, your gift can make a big difference in helping include more participants.
