2 Encouragement from the Director Dear Parents and ers: My name is Michael Henry and I am very excited about the growth of Occohannock on the Bay. With renovations of two bathhouses, 4 cabins, and even a new picnic shelter, camp is looking better than ever. Once again Occohannock on the Bay is offering new programs that are sure to get your children excited about spending time with us this summer. We always welcome new campers to experience the camp and having returned campers come back and try something different. Occohannock provides an outdoor ministry that is a viable and effective means for fulfilling the ministry and mission of the church and our community. Our Summer Programming will provide a living experience in God s creation to explore God s story, to experience the values of a Christian community, and to grow in Christian faith. Daily activities and discoveries will focus on different aspects of the camper s spiritual journey, meeting them wherever they are along that journey. ers will continue to enjoy traditional age appropriate camp activities listed in each camp description. Please take advantage of our special discounted offers and our new VA Beach Pick. We also offer scholarships of those that need a little extra help. OOTB IN MINISTRY YEAR ROUND Occohannock on the Bay and Retreat Center occupies 50 acres with over a mile of waterfront feeding into the Chesapeake Bay. The facilities are available year round for activities including, but not limited to, those of the church, scouting, mission teams, community organizations, celebrations, weddings, receptions and business retreats. Accommodations may include lodging, home cooked meals, worship, recreation, challenge courses and conference facilities with technology.

3 SUMMER STAFF Many returning Lead and Co-Counselors will continue the continuity of our longstanding reputation of fellowship, Christian education, safety and FUN. It is important for parents/guardians and campers to know that each staff member has completed an application, provided three individual personal references, successfully interviewed, and passed a comprehensive background check. Summer camp staff receives intense and comprehensive training including but not limited to: safety/ accident prevention, first aid/emergency procedures, CPR/ AED certification training, and methods and content of our educational goals and camp activities. COUNSELOR-IN-TRAINING PROGRAM Those wishing to be a CIT will need to register as a CIT er (June 17- July 13) and pay the camp fee of $360. This is a one-time payment that will cover food, lodging, and trip cost for three weeks. You will also need to be 15 years of age before the first day of staff training. C.I.Ts will be at staff training and then work 3 weeks with the campers. We also would like for the CITs to pick an adventure camp that they would like to go on to experience off site trips and what those trips will offer. Below are the camps to choose from. This program will introduce each camper to the fun of being outside and the basics of outdoor living. We know it is hard for many children to be away from their parents for a long amount of time and this Day is the perfect place to start. Our focus is to help create a sense of independence in a safe, comfortable, and loving environment for each camper. *Drop off 8am inside the screened porch. Pick up 5pm inside the screened porch. This program is to strengthen the confidence in each camper in their decision to be away from home overnight for a few days. Learn from K. J. Bentley who is a US Sailing Certified Instructor. Each day there will be a 3-hour course with time to swim in their pool before heading back to camp. Once at camp you will get to do many of camp s activities and keep working on your new skills. Come sail into the sunset with us this summer. Here campers will have the opportunity to enjoy all things the area has to offer. ers Week at a glance: Monday: Get to Bethel, Rock Wall, Zip Line, Low Challenge Course and other traditional camp activities. Tuesday: Caving for half the day and then more camp activities. Wednesday: Hike to McAfee s Knob with an overnight stay in a shelter. Enjoy cooking your food over a fire while getting to know your new friends with stories and other guided discussions. Thursday: Travel to Alta Mons waterfall and then to Roanoke City Market for lunch, a visit to the Pinball Machine Museum and then up to the Mill Mountain Star before returning to back to Bethel for closing activities. Megan will teach the basic requirements for receiving a white belt (maybe even a Gold belt). They will learn different types of kicks, punches, stances, and selfdefense techniques. ers will also learn bully defense and stranger danger tactics. Megan will also implement discipline, focus, respect, and other life skills necessary to be the best you can be. Know karate already? This would be a great chance to learn a new style and share what you know. Fee: $400 Sun 6pm - Fri 5pm Week 5: 7/22-7/27 POCOMOKE RIVER ADVENTURE Ages Perfect your canoeing skills with a week-long trip down the Pocomoke River. ers will begin in Snow Hill, Maryland and paddle down the river to different camp-out destinations. Along the way, campers will camp out at Shad and Milburn Landings to spend the night and enjoy lots of time around the campfire. After their river adventure, campers will be able to relax on Assateague Beach for some fun in the sun and recharge with some Island Creamery on the way back to camp. 14 Occohannock on the Bay and Retreat Center Summer Registration Information Our Program Philosophy: Every aspect of the summer program at OOTB follows a common function. Our working philosophy centers on what it means to be a part of the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12). Our function is to help each camper gain a better understanding of his/her part in Christ s Body and his/her role in God s creation. Form follows function. Aspects of our form are as follows: 1. Small Group Emphasis: campers and 2-4 counselors combine to make a unit (small group); low camper to counselor ratio; strong emphasis on safety; there is NO unsupervised time. 2. Sanctity of the Small Group: Each unit (group) plans their activities with the Program Board; every camper s location is known at all times by the counselors/program director. 3. Experiential Christian Education: More time is spent living and doing things together as Christians; relationships and activities are foundations of the campers learning; nightly worship in both large and small groups; counselors constantly see the teachable moment. 4. Emphasis on Stewardship of God s Creation: Nature study and Bible study are both forms of God s revelation of love. OOTB provides low-impact site camping. Activities involve active participation and interaction with God s creation on 49 acres, a creek and the beautiful Chesapeake Bay. 5. The Small Group s Dynamics: Each group experiences: Forming - Individuals become a group following registration. Norming - Group interactions take on patterns and norms. Storming - Any group difficulties eventually surface. Performing - Group realizes potential as the Body of Christ. Reforming - Debriefing and preparing for re-entry into the world. 6. Progression of Programs: Each age level offers new and more challenging programming. Adventure and skill-building camps support this progression. 7. Family Style Meals and Cookouts: Meals are a major part of the experiential Christian education each camper receives - family style expectations and table fellowship. 8. ing (to camp) implies ACTION: OOTB believes there should be effort required at camp to provide for our daily needs (food, shelter, clean bathrooms, set tables, etc.). When entering into this type of setting, a deeper sense of our own creativity emerges. ers experience the closeness of living and caring for self and others, analogous to the community of early Christians as described in 1 Corinthians 12. Our Behavior Policy: Persons attending Occohannock are expected to behave in a manner that is conductive to positive Christian living. Behavior deemed dangerous, inappropriate, or unmanageable by the Director is grounds for dismissal from camp, (i.e.: fighting, possession of harmful items, illegal substances, constant misbehavior, etc.) parents/guardians will be contacted and responsible for transportation.

Volunteer adults (at least 17 years of age) provide supervision, companionship, and compassion. The Occohannock on the Bay camp staff will help lead activities and provide their knowledge of camping, camp activities, and fun.
