2 WELCOME TO TRENT EXCALIBUR CAMP We re more than sports... we offer a unique and energetic summer experience of fun, friendship and adventure! We are an Ontario Camps Association accredited day camp at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario. Since 1993, we have been a leader in providing traditional and innovative camp activities, caring leadership, and meaningful experiences to grow as individuals and teams. Our camp is located on Trent University s beautiful Symons Campus, along the banks of the Otonabee River. The natural setting of Trent s 1,400 acres of trees, open fields, streams, and lush forests provide a unique learning and recreational environment. The Athletics Centre is the hub of activity for all campers. Our air conditioned indoor facilities include a full-size gymnasium, 25-metre pool, large change rooms, squash courts, a climbing wall, a fitness center, two dance/fitness rooms, a classroom, a rowing/paddling tank and our health care center. Trent Excalibur Camp is more than just fun. Here at TEC, we believe camp can develop important skills including decision-making, problem solving, independence, teamwork, responsibility, and interpersonal skills. At TEC, we work hard to ensure that each camper has the opportunity to learn, grow and play each day. We are proud of the amazing reputation we have in the area of being THE summer camp of choice, and are happy to answer any questions and talk to you further about why to choose TEC for you and your family. For more information or to register for camp, visit us online at trentu.ca/camp 2 - TRENT EXCALIBUR CAMP 2019
3 WHAT MAKES OUR CAMP DIFFERENT? We are an Ontario Camps Association accredited day camp and we are Camper Focused! It is a simple philosophy: we are here for the kids. All of our activities and programs are planned and delivered with the interests and needs of the campers in mind. We have accepted a very important responsibility. Parents want responsible role models for their children, campers want fun and enthusiastic counsellors who care about them, and other staff want supportive and caring colleagues! ü OUTSTANDING STAFF Our counsellors and Instructors are university-age and many are enrolled in Education, Social Work and Nursing Programs; all are First Aid/CPR/AED, SafeTALK certified, and many are National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) certified in their sports. Our Counsellors and Instructors have significant training and experience with sports, strong backgrounds in the leadership of children and youth, and are committed to a safe, caring, and fun-filled camp experience. As well, our staff bring a strong sense of responsibility, professionalism, and commitment to their positions at camp. ü PROFESSIONAL CAMP LEADERS At TEC, we work on camp business year-round. Camp is our job, and we work hard at it each and every day! Our Director works full-time in the Athletic Centre at Trent University so drop by for a visit or tour anytime. ü TIME TO LEARN AND GROW Campers need time to become comfortable with their surroundings and their leaders, and lots of time to learn and practice different skills. Our programs are two weeks long, different from traditional one week formats. Our two-week sessions provide campers with the time they need to develop relationships with staff, make friends, and learn and master new skills. ü MODERN FACILITIES IN A NATURAL ENVIRONMENT At TEC you get the best of both! Here at the Trent Athletics Centre, our indoor and outdoor facilities make up a wonderful camp environment. Campers enjoy clean and well-maintained buildings, and 1400 acres of forests, trails, and fields. Trent University is located outside the city core, and the Otonabee River provides a beautiful environment for water based activities at our camp. REGISTER ONLINE AT TRENTU.CA/CAMP - 3
4 YOUTH PROGRAMS AT A GLANCE THE MINI EXCALIBUR PROGRAM Mini Excalibur operates Monday to Friday as either a half day program with a morning option of 8:45 am until 12:00 noon, an afternoon option from 12:00 noon until 4:15 pm or a full day program from 8:45 am to 4:15 pm. The program provides young campers (4, 5 & 6 years, upper preschool, starting SK or grade 1 in the fall) with an introduction to basic sport skills (throwing, catching, coordination, kicking and running). All Mini Excalibur activities are designed to be fun, active, and non-competitive wherever possible. The program is a combination of basic sport instruction with traditional field games and recreational activities. Mini Excalibur campers also participate in activities meant to foster healthy group interaction: cooperation, respect for others, teamwork, sportsmanship, taking turns, and sharing. We will explore a wide range of camp and outdoor activities and encourage creativity through storytelling, story making, and drawing. A field trip and special guests will take place each session. INTEGRATED ARTS The Integrated Arts Camp is a fully immersive Arts enrichment opportunity for campers who want to explore the arts while immersed in the natural surroundings of Trent. This camp is open to individuals 7-14 years as of December 31st. This program infuses visual, dramatic and movement arts in a full day program that allows campers to focus on their Drama, Vocal, Dance and Arts and Crafts skills. This group will work together to create a final project or performance to be shared during our Parent BBQ. Based on number of registrants, this group may be divided into Junior and Senior activities. Older campers (10+ years of age or in Grade 5) may choose to participate in our evening or overnight program. CAMP SESSION DATES Trent Excalibur Camp is an excellent environment for children to learn about teamwork, fair play and to grow as individuals and teams! Camp programs are offered in four, two-week sessions during July and August. A July 2nd - July 12th 9 Days B July 15th - July 26th 10 Days C July 29th - August 9th 9 Days D August 12th - August 23rd 10 Days MULTISPORT We know that today s children face a myriad of obstacles to getting active and developing physical literacy. In our Multisport Camp, children become a better player and an inspired athlete. Our multisport camp will provide campers with a great environment to improve their game, meet new friends, learn the sport environment, and have serious fun! This camp takes a multi-sport approach that allows children to explore physical activity, and kid s sport. In this fast paced program, campers are introduced to and build on fundamental sport and movement skills as identified in the Canadian Sport for Life model. Older Campers (10+ years of age or in Grade 5) may choose to participate in our evening or overnight program. FUNdamentals: Ages 7 to 9 as of December 31st. Participate in a variety of well-structured activities that develop fundamental movement skills and overall motor skills including agility, balance, and coordination. Activities and programs will maintain a focus on fun, and formal competition will be minimally introduced. Learn to Train: Ages 8 to 12 as of December 31st or until the onset of the growth spurt. Children ages 8 and 9 should have previous sport experience in order to be in this program. This program has a strong emphasis on acquiring a wide range of skills necessary for a variety of sporting activities. Multisport Learn to Train focuses on physical, technical, and tactical development and lessens the likelihood of injury and burnout. Children will learn how nutrition, mental preparation, and assessments help with training and sport development. Train to Train: Ages 11 to 14 as of December 31st with previous sport experience at a competitive level. This program will provide sessions that establish an aerobic base, develop speed and strength, and further consolidate their basic sport-specific skills and tactics. Emphasis will be on skill training and physical development (process vs. outcome) with strong focus on injury prevention. Children will learn how nutrition, mental preparation, and assessments help with training and sport development. EVENING OR OVERNIGHT PROGRAM The overnight program is a highlight of the second week of camp and is open to campers (10+ years of age or in Grade 5) in Multisport, Integrated Arts, Outdoor Education, and Mad Scientist Camps. Individuals registered in the leadership programs are not eligible for this program. Campers have the chance to spend an evening with us for dinner, outdoor camp-wide games, and a campfire program*. The evening program operates until 8:00 pm. In addition to the activities of the evening program, overnight campers will continue to enjoy the campfire and sleep overnight in tents. Breakfast and lunch are included the next day. Space in the overnight program is limited, and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Both programs take place during the second week of each session. *Campfire is weather permitting. 4 - TRENT EXCALIBUR CAMP 2019
5 OUTDOOR EDUCATION This program focuses on the activities of our nature programs. The days are spent together as a group, with a focus on outdoor pursuits and team building games. A variety of activities including hiking, canoeing, and environmental education are offered to emphasize their interaction with nature. The program is open to campers ages 7-14 years of age. Older campers (13-14 years) will participate in a canoe/camping adventure that they plan as a group. This program involves a wide range of outdoor activities that provides opportunities for campers to develop their potential as leaders (leaders of themselves and of the team). Older campers (10+ years of age or in Grade 5) may choose to participate in our evening or overnight program. Rangers: 7-12 years as of December 31st. Explorers: years as of December 31st REQUIREMENTS: Campers will need a backpack for trips and excursions and need to be skilled swimmers in deep water. MAD SCIENTIST CAMP Does your child have a spirit of experimenting and evaluating information objectively or constantly wants to understand their world a little bit more? Then Science Camp may be the perfect fit! Open to children 7-14 years as of December 31st, this program offers the opportunity to touch, see, hear, smell and taste what science is really all about. This hands-on approach not only teaches children about the wonderful world of science, but it also gets them excited about applying scientific concepts to real-life situations. We use simple, real world science techniques that allow even the youngest of campers to enjoy our learning environment. As a result, children will leave the camp with an expanded knowledge and a deeper passion for science and all of its components. Our campers create, build and assemble a variety of takehome projects while exploring how science affects the world around us, and they have so much fun doing so that they forget that they are actually learning! Mad Science includes topics in: Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Ecology, Kinesiology and Forensics. Based on number of registrants, this group may be divided into Junior and Senior activities. Older campers (10+ years of age or in Grade 5) may choose to participate in our evening or overnight program. LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS Leadership programs are available to campers beginning in grades 8, 9, or 10 in the fall (13+ years of age) and lead into the Leader in Training and Councilor in Training programs. In these Programs, campers and staff participate in a wide range of outdoor activities which they have scheduled themselves at the beginning of the session, plus outdoor activities that provide opportunities for campers to develop their potential as leaders (leaders of themselves and of the team). The Leadership programs operate within an environment of challenge by choice and respect for each other. Detailed information on each of these programs is available on our website at trentu.ca/camp ADVENTURERS A full day program for youth years. Adventurers is a highly individualized program, which focuses on team building and personal leadership through a variety of activities. In Adventurers, campers will participate in a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, canoeing, and intramural games. Campers plan and participate in a two-night camping trip. LEADER-IN-TRAINING (LIT) Runs July 8 - July 26, 2019 The LIT 3-week program provides our senior campers (aged years) with an introduction to leading and teaching, while spending time with other youth in a fun and positive environment. LIT s take part in skill sessions, group discussions, a 3-day backpacking trip, and all-camp events to explore and analyze leadership styles and skills. All LIT applicants must submit a resume and complete an interview process before registering. COUNSELOR-IN-TRAINING (CIT) Runs August 6 - August 23, 2019 Our CIT 3-week program provides aspiring camp counselors (aged years) with an intensive and challenging experience that will help prepare them to be a camp leader. CIT s will participate in hands-on planning, leading and evaluating activities and learn counselor specific skills like behaviour management techniques, supervision, large group leadership and team building activities. CIT s will take part in a 4-day canoe trip, a mock interview with the Camp Director and an extensive shadow placement with an experienced counselor. All CIT applicants must submit a resume and complete an interview process before registering. REGISTER ONLINE AT TRENTU.CA/CAMP - 5
