Dear Parents and Campers, We are thrilled that you will be joining us this summer! We have prepared this handbook to answer some commonly asked questions and provide you with important information. Every child at Camp Nesher is precious and unique, and we strive to provide an environment that will enable each camper to have the best experience possible. Please partner with us in following these guidelines to help us create the atmosphere that makes Camp Nesher so special. See you this summer! Jeff Braverman, Director Mandatory Uniform It is required that every camper in camp have the following items: TWO (2) Camp Nesher Gold T-Shirts with Logo TWO (2) Camp Nesher Navy Blue T-Shirts with Logo ONE (1) Camp Nesher Baseball Cap (8th grade and under) All of these items can be purchased only from The Campspot. The CampSpot is on the internet at
3 Important Camp Information BAGGAGE We allow up to two pieces of luggage per camper. Please pack only in soft-sided trunks or duffles that can be collapsed or folded. We cannot accommodate hard trunks or suitcases. All baggage originating from the Tri-State area and Philadelphia is handled by Camp Trunk Delivery (formerly known as ADS Trucking ). Luggage may not be brought on camp buses unless it is arriving from a location not serviced by Camp Trunk Delivery. Please call the camp office if you are not sure if this applies to you. If you choose to ship through UPS, please allow at least five business days for bags to arrive. TRANSPORTATION TO CAMP Details for the bus trip to camp will be sent to you in June. If your camper will be coming by airplane, Camp will meet him/her at Newark International Airport. To arrange air travel, please contact us before you book your flights! Please ship your camper s baggage in advance so it is waiting for your child upon his or her arrival at camp. BUNK REQUESTS Bunk Request Forms (optional, available online) are due by June 1 st. Reciprocal requests have a greater chance of being honored. We do our best to accommodate all bunk requests. Final bunk assignments are at the discretion of the head counselors. Campers will be informed of their bunk placement when they arrive at camp. FOOD IS NOT ALLOWED IN BUNKS! Food, gum, candy, soda, etc. attract animals and are therefore not allowed in bunks. All food in bunks will be removed. Bottles of plain, unflavored water are permitted, but not necessary. Campers hiding food in the bunk face disciplinary action and possible dismissal from camp. PACKAGES Only flat envelopes will be accepted, except for boxes sent from eswak.com, which is a guaranteed non-food package company. Special exceptions for emergency items can be made by calling the office before mailing. All packages will be opened in the presence of your camper. Any food sent to camp will be removed! Please share this very strict policy with anyone who might wish to send a package to your camper. PERSONAL ELECTRONICS Please see special section regarding this important area. We cannot be responsible for lost or damaged items. Please label everything!!! PHONE CALLS Please allow our staff 24 hours to return your call. We do not allow campers to call home except on their birthday. Exceptions are only made by the camp administration. Campers may never have cell phones with them in camp, nor may they use staff cell phones. LETTER/ WRITING Please send your campers equipped with stationary and stamps. The only way to send to campers and summer staff is from Please note that attachments cannot be printed. Please remember that campers can only receive s, not send them VISITING CAMP WHEN IT IS NOT VISITING DAY Camp Nesher cannot accommodate overnight guests. Unapproved visits are extremely disruptive to camp and will not be accommodated.
4 Special visits must be approved by the Director and are limited to special circumstances for full summer campers. Shabbat is an integral part of your camper s experience, and it is Camp Nesher s strict policy not to allow campers out of camp over Shabbat. SPORTS EQUIPMENT Camp provides equipment needed for our athletics program but campers are welcome to bring their own. If your camper is an avid hockey player, we require that you send all necessary protective gear, including a protective cup for boys. Please label all items clearly! TIPPING There is a strict NO tipping policy at Camp Nesher. We thank you for respecting this policy and for not offering a tip of any kind to our staff. If you wish to acknowledge a particular staff member in a special way, please make a tax-deductible donation, in his or her name, to our scholarship fund. The staff member will receive notification that your donation was made. UNIFORM (MANDATORY) For your child s safety when out of camp, and for inter-camp games, all campers must have blue and gold Nesher T-shirts. Uniform items are available only through The CampSpot. If you have any questions, please call them directly or see their website, CAMPERS MAY NOT BRING THE FOLLOWING ITEMS TO CAMP: Food Cell / Smart Phones Skateboards, Ripsticks, etc. DVD Players Walkie Talkies Laptops, ipads, netbooks, etc. Mini Fridges Fireworks Inappropriate media Video Cameras Lighters / Matches Heelies/Skate shoes Super Soakers or similar high-power water guns Please be aware of what your child is bringing to camp. If an item is in question, please either call camp to check if it is allowed, or don t send it. In accordance with American Camp Association accreditation standards, be advised that illegal substances, alcohol, weapons and camper s personal vehicles are not allowed in Camp. Usage or possession of any of these, including tobacco, by any camper will result in immediate dismissal. The only exception to this rule is made for adult staff who make kiddush on Shabbat using wine. This is monitored by the Nesher administration. Campers may not bring animals or pets of any kind to camp. PICTURES POSTED ONLINE DAILY!
5 Policy Regarding Cell Phones, Digital Cameras and Other Electronics This policy is intended for everyone s security, privacy and well being. It is difficult to cover all potential electronics situations here, so we turn to you, our parents, as partners in ensuring that your children do not come to camp with anything that might be considered inappropriate, even if you allow it in your home. If any part of this policy is unclear to you, please call the Director to discuss it. Campers may not have cell phones (including smart phones and iphones) while in camp. Please do not send phones to camp. Campers with phones must hand them in for storage upon arrival. Phones will be returned to campers the day they go home. Any camper found to be in possession of a cell phone after the day of arrival will face a one-week suspension from camp. Repeat offenders will be dismissed. Personal DVD players, laptops, ipads, and movie players are NOT permitted. Campers are permitted to have the following items in camp: ipods and mp3s. Only music is permitted. Please delete all videos and photos before your camper comes to camp. PSPs and Gameboys without movies or phone capability. We allow games rated for general audiences only. Inappropriate games and their devices will be confiscated. Digital Cameras Please reconsider allowing your child to bring expensive electronics to camp, and please label everything!!! Camp will not be held responsible for loss or damage of electronic devices. Camp Nesher Dress Code Parents, please keep in mind the modest atmosphere of camp when selecting items to send with your child. Please also advise your children that this dress code will be enforced. Shorts and skirts must reach the knee. Absolutely no boxers or short-shorts. Leggings and bike shorts may only be worn under appropriate skirts or shorts. No tank tops, sleeveless shirts, see-through shirts or shirts with wide, low or revealing necklines for boys or girls. Boys are asked to wear tzitzit and a kippah or hat at all times. During tefillah and chinuch periods, girls must wear skirts. Bathing suits should be shorts type for boys, and a one-piece or tankini for girls. No bikinis. Appropriate Shabbat attire: slacks and collar shirt for boys; modest, knee-length skirt or dress for girls. No sneakers. Campers/Staff not adhering to the camp dress code will be asked to change clothes. Please do not bring expensive jewelry or clothing to camp. Please label EVERYTHING!
6 Medical Care at Camp Nesher Our Health Center includes nurses and a physician on premises. It is Camp s policy to call parents when a child needs a prescription, or needs to visit a physician or hospital outside of camp. We will also call if your child spends more than one night in the Health Center. REQUIRED FORMS Due by May 15th Health forms (forms filled out online on your camper s CampDoc account) Please specify all medical and prescription insurance information on camp s health form. You must have medical insurance for use in the United States Legible photocopy of both sides of camper s medical insurance cards Credit card information for filling prescriptions MEDICATION AT CAMP No medication of any kind is allowed to be kept in the bunk. This encompasses pill and nonpill medication, including and not limited to, injection, inhalation, topical, suppositories and instillations. Exceptions for inhalers, epipens or diabetic medications can be made only with approval of camp staff. ALL daily pills must be packaged on a calendar card. If your camper regularly takes any prescription or over-the-counter pills, even vitamins, gastric and allergy medications, the pills must be placed on a calendar card and kept in the Health Center. Pills or capsules for daily use may NOT be sent to camp in vials or boxes. Please call us with any questions. You may use a pharmacy of your choice to provide calendar card packaging. You must make sure that calendar cards are shipped to camp no later than one week before camp in order to insure proper processing. Medication can arrive beginning June 24th. Calendar cards must be numbered by the pharmacy only. Medicine Shoppe is one pharmacy that can provide calendar carded prescriptions. or call All medications, including over-the-counter medications/products, must be accompanied by a separate physician s order with instructions for specific administration by camp personnel. A label on a calendar card, vial or package does not count and will not be acceptable. The pharmacy order that was used to fill the prescription cannot be used by camp. All orders must match pharmacy labels. All orders must be legible. A legal order includes: Name of Camper Name of medication Dosage Route of administration Frequency of administration Physicians Signature and contact information Please send your child to camp lice-free!! MEDICAL FORMS are due by May 15th. Campers will not be permitted in camp without one. Every counselor and camper at Camp Nesher is checked for lice on the day of arrival. Anyone with lice may not rejoin his/her group until s/he is lice-free. If your child has lice or nits, you will have the option to come take him/her home for treatment, or to pay a professional to treat your child at camp. Note that this service is usually in excess of $300.
7 Driving Directions to Camp Nesher (570) Please Note: Many GPSs take you to a different location. Please follow the directions below when you get close to camp. From Central and South NJ: Garden State Parkway North to Exit 145. Take Interstate 280 West to Interstate 80 West to Exit 34B (Highway 15N - Sparta). This turns into Rt. 206 North to Milford, PA. At traffic light in Milford go straight ahead (you are now on Rt. 6 West). Stay on Highway 6 to Honesdale; Route 191 joins Highway 6 just before entering downtown Honesdale; Follow Route 191 to Highway 670N and veer left at the fork; Go approximately 10 miles to Highway 247N and turn right; Go another 10 miles to signs on left side of road pointing toward the NJ Y camps and turn left. Follow to Camp Nesher on your right. From Northern New Jersey: Interstate 80 West and follow above instructions. From Staten Island: Goethals Bridge to New Jersey Turnpike North to Exit 15W. Follow to Interstate 280 West and follow directions above. From New York City: Lincoln Tunnel to Route 3 West to Route 46 West to Interstate 80 West. Follow as above. Or you can take George Washington Bridge to Interstate 80 West and follow directions above. New York Routes (via Catskills): New York Thruway to Route 17 West - to Hancock, NY, Exit #87. Left at exit ramp. Follow exit signs to to Route 191(right at Getty Station). After crossing Delaware River Bridge follow Route 191 to Route 370 West. Turn right and take Route 370 West to Route 247 South (approx. 4 miles). Turn left and follow Route 247 South through village of Lake Como. Approximately 2 miles after the village, NJY camps sign and road will appear on the right - turn right and follow to Nesher road on your right. From Philadelphia: PA Turnpike to Mid-County Expwy/ Rt. 476 N for approx 115 miles to end. Take Rt. 81 N. Follow until exit for Rt. 6 East. Follow 6 East toward Carbondale. Follow until signs for Waymart, and turn Left at Route 296 (at traffic light, gas stations on left) in Waymart. Go 5.7 miles. Turn right at first stop sign to Route 247 North. Go straight for 13.1 miles, through two stop signs. Camp signs on the left. From Baltimore/Washington Area: Take I-83 North from Baltimore to Rt. 81 N in Harrisburg, PA. Then follow directions from Philadelphia, above. From Connecticut: Interstate 84 West towards New York State. Follow to Monticello, NY to Route 17 West (towards Binghamton, NY). Follow Route 17 West to exit 87 then follow as in NY Routes. From Toronto, Ontario: Take the QEW (Queen Elizabeth Way) over the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. Follow Route 190 Southeast to Route 290 East to Route 90 East to Route 690 Southeast (near Syracuse, NY) to Route 81 South to Route 17 East (in Binghamton, NY) to Exit 87 (Hancock, NY). Left of exit ramp, to route 191(right at Getty station). Make Right onto Route 191, cross the bridge into Pennsylvania and go about 1.5 miles and make a right onto Route 370 west. Make left onto Route 247 S and go approx. 5 miles to Camp entrance on right. From Montreal, Quebec: Take the Champlain Bridge to Route 15 South to the New York State Thruway (Route 87 South) to Route 90 East (at Albany, NY) to Route 88 South to Exit 9. Take Route 8 South to Route 17 East to Exit 87 (Hancock, NY). Take Route 97 South to Route 191. Make Right onto Route 191, cross the bridge into Pennsylvania and go about 1.5 miles and make a right onto Route 370 West. Make left onto Route 247 S and go approx. 5 miles to Camp entrance on right.
