2 An Overview of Young Women s Camp in the Santa Clara Oregon Stake The purpose of this booklet is to provide Bishops, Young Women Leaders, Parents, and young women an overview of Young Women s Camp in the Santa Clara Oregon Stake. This packet is not intended to be all inclusive, but rather an overview of camp. If you have any specific questions please contact our Stake Camp Director Robin Crass or our Stake Young Women s President Shari Bay. Purpose/Goals of Camp 1. Strengthen her faith and testimony of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ 2. Understand her identity as a daughter of God 3. Live a worthy life as she obeys the commandments and lives gospel standards 4. Receive, recognize, and rely on the promptings of the Holy Ghost 5. Prepare for her divine roles as a leader, wife, and mother 6. Understand and keep the covenants she has made 7. Develop friendships and have fun General Information Location - Camp Alpine Camp Alpine is located near Monroe, Oregon. It is a church owned camp that is assigned service missionaries to run and maintain the grounds. It comes equipped with a fully functional dining hall, showers, permanent latrines, swimming pond, and camp sites. Each girl will be assigned a campsite with 2 adult leaders supervising it. Eligibility Young Women ages are encouraged to attend. Young women must be 12 years old by Saturday July 21 to attend. Non-member friends are welcome to attend so long as they meet the eligibility and register and agree to those terms and conditions. Registration Every person attending camp even if for just the day needs to complete a registration. This can be found at oregonyouthconference.com. Follow the links to Santa Clara Stake Young Women's Camp 2018 and complete the registration. This is to be done by a parent/guardian and completed by June 15, This form includes guidelines for camp fee s, dress and appearance, medical release, code of conduct, and church wide release statement.

3 Camp Fee The camp fee is $125. This fee should be paid using a tithing envelope and writing young women camp and the name of the young woman in the section titled other. The tithing envelope should be given to the bishop or counselor. Psyche Night This is held on Sunday June 24, 2018 at 6:00pm at the Danebo Chapel. This is a fun event where Bishops, Young Women leaders, Camp leaders, Parents, and young women are encouraged to attend to be introduced to this years theme. This is also where the young women will meet their youth and adult leaders and find out who will be camping at the same site/unit with them. Arrival and Departure Young Women s Camp 2018 starts Tuesday July 17 - Saturday July 21. Adult leaders and YCL s will be arriving Monday July 16 10:00am to start setup. Camp Starts at 9:00 am Tuesday July 17. We encourage the girls to arrive between 8:00am and 9:00am to receive a special recognition bead for their camp necklace, of being an early bird. Transportation is the responsibility of the campers. Church policy states that youth ages may not transport other youth for activities except for siblings. Departure is Saturday July 21 noon. The girls will be taking down and cleaning up Camp Alpine until 11:30 am. We ask that parents not drive vehicles into camp until after the final flag ceremony has concluded at noon, but are welcome to join their daughters for that event at 11:30 am. The entrance gate will be closed until noon, so if you arrive earlier, please leave your vehicle in the parking area and walk in. Units At the Psyche Night the girls will be grouped into similar ages consisting of 8-10 youth with 2 Adult leaders. These are their units and their family for the week. Meals The girls are responsible to bringing a ready to eat sack lunch and foil dinner for the first day of camp Tuesday July 17. All other meals and snacks will be provided by the stake, and cooked and served in various ways including but not limited to openfire, cook top, and oven. If there are special dietary needs please indicate in registration and we will take care of those on a case by case basis. 4 Medical A certified/registered nurse will be at camp at all times and will attend any illness and injury at camp. If emergency medical attention is needed 911 will be called and the parents/listed emergency contacts will be notified. We require each person attending camp to complete a medical history and medical release form. A physical is not required to attend camp, but we do ask that each camper have a current tetanus shot. If there are any on-going medical concerns please indicate so on the medical release form provided in the registration. If your daughter has an allergy to stinging insects, please send an epi pen with her. Visitors Camp is a great opportunity for girls to learn how to be more independent. We encourage parents/guardians to stay home during camp and not visit. Visitors can be disruptive to the activities going on at camp, and can be a hardship at mealtimes. If you have been specially invited to visit camp during a specific time and activity we encourage you to attend during that time only. Code of Conduct Camp provides an excellent opportunity for each young woman to develop lasting friendships, gain self-reliance skills, and most especially, it provides a wonderful atmosphere where faith in Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father s plan for each individual girl can grow stronger in the midst of others who are striving to keep the same high standards. We want everyone to be aware of what is expected at camp. The following guidelines are referenced from standards in For Strength of Youth and required of participants at Especially for Youth programs sponsored by the church. Be Honest. (Be truthful in all you say and do with leaders and friends.) Live a chaste and virtuous life. Obey the law. (This includes not taking items that don t belong to you or defacing property belonging to someone else.) Use clean language. (Do not take the Lord's name in vain.) Be POSITIVE in all Communication. Respect others: Their feelings, space, belongings, NO hurtful pranks. No use of alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee, or drug abuse. Observe dress and grooming standards. No tights, leggings or spandex Shorts (modest to the knee length, not tight) and Capri s are Allowed. No excessive ear piercing (one per ear) and all other body piercing are not acceptable. Hike or activity footwear MUST enclose the whole foot and is REQUIRED for those activities. Sandals, flip-flops, or open-toed footwear, are permitted within the main meadow area, in units and to and from the pond. No suggestive or vulgar wording or pictures on any clothing. YW are not allowed to bring cell phones & electronics to camp please leave these devices at home as they are a distraction at camp. Follow the rule: EVERYONE IN ASSIGNED UNIT at designated lights out. Special Events/Activities

5 Daily Devotional Everyday while at camp a specific time is designated for personal spiritual growth. This hour is devoted to scripture study and journal writing and will begin with a short devotional introduction by one of their leaders. This time is guided by the leaders at camp with a topic from the scriptures or inspirational talks for the first 10 minutes. Then for the remaining hour the girls have the opportunity to continue to study the decided topic or their own choice of study. Evening Program On Tuesday and Wednesday evening there is a program at the amphitheater where all the campers come together to hear a guest speaker. The speakers and topics are different each night. This is another time for the girls to come and listen to a spiritual message and grow closer to our Father in Heaven before the rest of the night's activities start. Skits On Thursday night each unit prepares a skit. These are fun in nature and are a time for the girls to bond as a unit while having a fun time. It s a time everyone looks forward to this evening is a highlight at camp. Testimony meeting On Friday evening Bishops are invited to come up to camp to visit with their ward members over a pizza dinner and devotional, followed by a testimony meeting. Everyone comes together at the amphitheater and is invited to share their testimony of the gospel. This is another highlight at camp and definitely one of the most memorable evenings. Confidence Course At Camp Alpine we have the great opportunity to have access to a ropes course. This is a place where leaders that are trained in the course teach each unit teambuilding skills and communication skills to help the girls complete the course together. It is great fun, and is a unique opportunity to participate in. Certification Certification provides structure for camp. This is a time were the girls will be taught step-by-step basic outdoor survival skills. As the girls complete certain skills they gain a bead. Beads are a part of our recognition program to encourage the girls to learn new skills. At the end of the week the girls receive a necklace with all the beads that they've earned through the week. One of these skills includes a hike that takes place at Camp Alpine for twelve-year-old campers, and ranges from 2-5 miles long. The older girls are divided into two groups for a special off-campus hike; one at Alsea Falls, the other at Finley Wildlife Refuge. Another skill is a service project that often takes place in the neighboring town of Alpine or Monroe. We reach out to the community and help clean up and setup community venues such as baseball fields and parks. The service project is a great opportunity for the girls to learn that giving service is a

6 joy and easy to find. *Please note - transportation to and from the two off-campus hikes and the service project will be provided by licensed, insured drivers, with a seatbelt for each passenger. If you decline permission for your daughter to participate in either off campus activity, please specify that information under the Notes tab in registration, and an alternate in-camp activity will be provided for any young women remaining behind. Free Time Each day the girls have a block time to just relax. During free time there are a variety of activities such as swimming or zip lining into the pond which has a certified lifeguard, a variety of crafts, nature center, mini spa, and even archery. This time is another opportunity for girls to earn beads and try new things. Camp Wrap Up Fireside The Sunday following camp July 22, there is a fireside at 6:00pm at the Danebo Stake Center. This is where pictures taken at camp are compiled and shown in a slideshow, and where each girls gets recognized for her accomplishments at camp. This is also followed by refreshments. Packing List CLOTHES: One piece bathing suit, or Tankini that covers midriff when arms are uplifted. Warm coat 2 pair long pants/2 pair modest shorts or capris 4 shirts, one long sleeve 6 pair socks Hiking shoes Tennis shoes and flip flops or sandals Underwear Pajamas Hiking hat RAIN GEAR TOILET ACCESSORIES: 3 towels, washcloths, soap, shampoo/conditioner Toothbrush, toothpaste Sunblock

7 Insect repellant Mirror, Comb, Brush Feminine Hygiene items BEDDING: Sleeping bag Air or foam mattress Pillow, blanket TENT - small tent with floor (2-3 man preferable) Tarp for tent or plastic Camp Chair GENERAL: Scriptures ( NOT on a device ) Compass Notebook, pencil, pen FLASHLIGHT, EXTRA BATTERIES Pocket knife, whetstone 25 ft light inexpensive rope Whistle Refillable water bottle Day pack for hike Small first aid kit ** SACK LUNCH & FOIL DINNER for first day!!! To prevent excessive time requirements or burned food, please pre-cook all ingredients in foil dinners! LOST ITEMS: Every year there are many things left at camp. Please label everything well! Electronics NO CELL PHONES Bring a FLASHLIGHT, a WATCH to tell time, and an ALARM CLOCK. Please DO NOT bring an electronic device. Bring hard or soft bound SCRIPTURES! Directions and Map to Camp Alpine Go North to Junction City, then take 99W to Monroe. Just North of Monroe about a mile is the left turn towards the town of Alpine onto Alpine Cut-off Rd/Alpine Vineyard/Alsea Falls. Stay to the left. Go through Alpine, then, where the road forks again, go to the left and then turn right on

8 Rainbow Cr. Rd. to Camp Alpine (There is a pink mailbox across the street from the road into Camp Alpine). It s approximately 2 ½ miles from Alpine town to the camp.
