4 OVERNIGHT CAMP AGES 6 16 Each day after breakfast, you ll leave your cabin with friends new and old to begin the first of your two morning activities. Every day is filled with excitement, on land, water, high in the trees or on horseback. Our activities will let you develop new interests and skills or fine tune existing ones. All programs are instructed by our diverse staff. Selected from all over the world for their experience and expertise, they will help you learn, grow and have the time of your life. In fact, our great staff is the reason many campers come back year after year. At lunch, you ll meet back up with your cabin. This is a great time to discuss your morning adventures and make plans for your afternoon Cabin Activity. Only time and imagination limit what you and your bunk mates can achieve together. It might be jewelry making in arts and crafts, kayaking on the river, building shelters in the woods or exploring Monster Island. After lunch, rest up at siesta before going to your next activity. BE YOURSELF MEALS Unless you have already served juice to a moose on super hero Monday or eaten your first slice of handsfree cake, it s almost impossible to describe the noise and fun of meal times. Three times a day, your cabin will shout and sing as you try to outperform your rival cabins, all of whom are competing for extra points towards the Crew Cup. All while eating food that seems too good to be camp food. Many meals have themes so make sure you pack something pink, a pair of knee high socks, and a tiedye t-shirt. 4 YMCA CAMP LETTS Summer

5 EVENING ACTIVITY When the sun starts to set, camp comes alive. Each night we have camp wide activities and games which tie in with each of our weekly themes. Which week will you be attending? THEME WEEKS Wild West Week, Olympic Week, Colonial Week, Medieval Week, Science Fiction Week, Halloween Week, Super Hero Week, Pirate Week, The Color Wars TRY OUT CAMP AGES 6-8 Specially designed for first time campers, this two night, three day stay at Camp is a great way to explore all of the fun we have to offer. Let your two counselors take you and your cabin-mates on a tour of just about everything we do at Camp. Canoe, kayak or sail the Rhode River, explore the woods on horseback, learn a new sport and design a masterpiece at Arts and Crafts. We ll teach you sea-sledding, a polar bear plunge at the pool, campfire songs, the secret of making the perfect s more; and all of this while you make great new friends! YMCA CAMP LETTS Summer

7 ZE DAY CAMP AGES 6-14 Want to have a summer that will be the envy of all your friends? Then we are the place for you. This summer, we will be running nine one-week sessions each with a different theme. Each day you re here, you will choose up to four different activities to participate in: Arts and Crafts, Basketball, Canoeing, Lacrosse, Street Hockey, Soccer, Drama, Fitness, the High Ropes, and much more! You could participate in twenty new activities in one week and still need to come back to experience them all. You ll have to take our word for it as we have everything you could imagine from Archery to Zip Lining. Want to spend time in the water? At Day Camp, you get to swim every day, try out the canoes and kayaks, and even take a ride in our new paddle boats. Every Camper gets to take a ride on our twelve person Sea Sled. Still unsure what you want to do? Are you curious about Cricket or Gaelic Football? Then why not ask one of our staff? Camp Letts staff come from all over the world. Some are from as far away as New Zealand and Australia, as far north as Finland and as far south as Zimbabwe; others are from right here in Edgewater. Ask them and they might teach you games that you have only seen on T.V. or may have never even heard of. Each week is packed with fun and adventure, but if you need more, you could sign up for one of our specialty horse riding, wake boarding and water skiing, or paintball add-ons. DON T WANT TO LEAVE? Then join us for the night! Each Thursday night we have a Day Camp sleep over. At Camp, Thursday night is the official start to the weekend. Campers who sleep over eat dinner and join in the evening activity and closing camp fire. In the morning, they eat breakfast and lunch with Overnight Camp before joining Day Camp for their final day of activities. PARENTS Want a little taste of camp? Join us on Fridays at 3pm for the weekly Camp Fire held at the forks. Staying over is a great practice for when you stay with us for a whole week in the future. YMCA CAMP LETTS Summer

8 LEAD EQUESTRIAN AGES 8 16 The Horse Masters program is designed for all ages and skill levels. Campers are given an evaluation ride and then separated into groups according to their riding ability. As riders skills progress, they learn jump and two point position, cantering on the lead, and jumping. Riders also participate in a weekly trail ride. Camp Letts CHA certified instructors give individual attention to all riders and build a personal riding experience to fit every camper s interest. TRAIL RIDES AGES 8 16 Enjoy a scenic trail ride with our CHA certified instructors through our extensive wooded trails overlooking the Rhode River. If you are curious about horses then this is a great introduction to riding. Trail rides take place in the afternoons and are limited to one trail ride per camper. 8 YMCA CAMP LETTS Summer

9 ARCHERY CALLING ALL KATNISS, LEGOLAS AND ROBIN HOOD FANS! Under the supervision of our USA Archery certified instructors, campers will have the opportunity to sign up for archery every day at the range or simply visit for a one hour introduction lesson with their cabin. The daily lesson is designed as an introduction to competition standards, focusing not only on form and shooting, but also on all critical parts of archery applicable to competitive shooters (such as bow maintenance and tuning). The lesson takes place with your cabin and teaches similar skills to the daily course, though at a more basic level. It is intended for kids who are new to the sport and looking for a positive first experience with archery. NO EXTRA COST. The cost of Archery is included in the Overnight and Day Camp registration fees. FOCUS YMCA CAMP LETTS Summer

10 GET SO SAILING 1 Ahoy Mate! Sailing 1 is an introductory course that will teach you the basics of sailing and build your confidence on the water. You will learn all about what makes your boat glide through the water with just the wind as your motor. You will learn the parts of the boat, how to rig and de-rig, points of sail, steering, tacking and jibing. This program is all about having fun while learning to sail. There is no extra cost for Sailing 1 as it is included in the registration fee for Overnight and Day Camp. Sailing 1 is an introductory course designed to teach the basics of sailing and build comfort on the water. Due to limited space we recommend campers that have completed Sailing 1 sign up for Sailing 2 to advance their skills. Returning campers who have previously completed Sailing 1 will be placed on our waiting list in order to allow first time campers to sign up. SAILING 2 For those of you ready to get serious about sailing, Sailing 2 is your next step to becoming the next Jimmy Spithill. Our sailing instructors will guide you as you progress towards single-handed sailing in our Opti and Laser fleets. Campers should have basic knowledge of rigging, boat handling and points of sail to enroll in Sailing 2. You will learn wind awareness, effects of tides and currents and the finer points of sail trim while having fun with your camp buddies. SAILING 3 It is time to race! Sailing 3 is all about advanced boating handling. This level introduces jib sail handling on our new Catalina Capris. You and your crew will be introduced to racing tactics; starts, mark rounding, rules of racing and much more. At this level you will spend 95% of your time on the water refining your skills and preparing for the Camp Regatta held each Thursday. 10 YMCA CAMP LETTS Summer

11 AKED CANOES AND KAYAKS Launch onto the Rhode River and start to explore. From Monster Island to Bear Neck Creek and Flat Island to Muddy Creek, there are an abundance of islands and inlets to explore! Learn to paddle, take part in capsize drills and perform a T-rescue or just join our experienced instructors for an afternoon trip around our beautiful peninsula. The choice of adventure is up to you! No extra cost. Canoe and Kayaking, and Sailing 1 are included in registration fee for Overnight and Day Camp. WATER SKIING AND WAKE BOARDING AGES 8 16 Hit the water with our Water Skiing and Wake Boarding program! Whether it s your very first time or you re a free style pro, our highly trained staff are ready for you. Our program concentrates on individual skill progression and a true belief that anyone can learn to ski! SEA SLED RIDES! Race across the water on one of our giant sea sleds. Each cabin will get the opportunity to experience the thrill of being pulled by one of our ski boats. POWER BOATING AGES 12 AND OVER This course will prepare you to sit the Maryland Certificate of Safe Boating.* It s a great and easy way to get certified amidst the fun of camp. Please note this is primarily an academic class and the camper must sit the MD State Safe boating test. This is a pass/fail test. Campers that successfully pass the course receive their certificate. *Anyone one born after July 1st 1972 must have this certificate in their possession to legally operate a motorized vehicle in Maryland and most surrounding waters Safety is always our first priority. In order to participate in one of our water front add-ons all campers must be able to attain a yellow band in our swim test. To attain yellow band campers must be able to swim two laps of our pool (approximately 100 meters and tred water for two minutes). YMCA CAMP LETTS Summer

12 ROPES COURSE AGE LIMIT Things look a little different from 35 feet in the air, and our ropes course will certainly change your perspective. Step out of your comfort zone and step on to our 13 element course, where our skilled instructors will work with you to overcome challenges you never even thought possible. NO EXTRA COST. The cost of the Ropes course is included in the Overnight and Day Camp registration fee. ZIPLINE There is nothing more exciting on camp than flying through the trees on our zip line. At 250 feet long, the zip line is sure to get your heart racing. NO EXTRA COST. The cost of the zip is included in the Overnight and Day Camp registration fee. PAINTBALL AGES Paintball is a nonstop, action packed activity for campers. Each three hour session begins with a clinic, where you can improve your skills and learn new tactics from one of our instructors before dividing into teams and playing one of many themed games on our woodland course reserved exclusively for paintballing. Our program focuses on individual and team tactics, problem solving, group communication, and having a great time! We provide paintball markers, protective masks and the paint. No matter what your level of paintballing experience, our paintball classes are thrilling and guaranteed to get your adrenaline pumping. Do you just want a taste of paintball? Sign up for a single hour long paintball session. We will teach you all the basics you need before you go into the arena for the first time. CHALLENGE 12 YMCA CAMP LETTS Summer

13 COMPETE After its introduction in the Summer of 2013, the Annual Color War has taken Camp Letts by storm. Set in the final session of August, it begins with splitting the entire Camp population into two tribes. From there, the Red Team and the Blue Team battle through a series of contests encompassing all the wonderful activities Camp Letts has COLOR WARS to offer. From tests of athleticism, arts, creativity and enthusiasm through the important values of sportsmanship and teamwork, campers compete to become the Color War Champions. With Red and Blue tied with one win each, Summer 2015 is sure to raise the bar as Camp Letts crowns its Color War team. See you there! YMCA CAMP LETTS Summer

14 PREPARE LEADERS IN TRAINING (LiT) PROGRAM AGE 16 OR ON COMPLETION OF HIGH SCHOOL SOPHOMORE YEAR Are you ready to take the next step? Join our Training Director for 2 weeks of leadership development and all the fun of Camp. Through progressive lessons that center on leadership, you will use activities such as group discussion, role-playing, and practical exercises to explore and practice your new skills. Complete tasks on problem-solving, communication, program planning, public speaking, and conflict resolution, all while still enjoying a full camper experience. The LiT session lasts two weeks and participants remain at camp over the weekend. During this time you will have additional opportunities to participate in fun and challenging team building activities which facilitate the development of a strong, cohesive group of lifelong friends. COUNSELOR IN TRAINING (CiT) PROGRAM AGE 17 OR ON COMPLETION OF HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR YEAR Our Counselor in Training (CiT) program just keeps getting better and this year is no different. Spend 4 weeks with the CiT team and see how this experience of a lifetime results in friendships you ll treasure forever! During your time with us, you become part of the camper-centered community that is Camp Letts, learning just how we make camp special for each kid. Through regular training sessions, we will assist with the development of practical skills that will transfer to a host of future experiences, from daily life through college to positions of employment. Under the guidance of our dedicated Training Director, CiTs will be exposed to a range of scenarios that will prepare them to take a supervised assistant counselor role in a cabin during their camp stay. Specific areas of attention include skill building sessions on positive first impressions, the cultivation of friendships and the role of the counselor in assisting campers in their development of independence, all in the supportive setting that camp provides. Please note that while many of our CiTs are former campers, this is not a prerequisite for enrollment. 18 DETAILS AND POLICIES PROFESSIONAL STAFF YMCA Camp Letts recruits highly skilled individuals whose warmth, maturity and leadership have made them stand out. Our goal for the summer is that every camper leaves Camp Letts with an experience that will have them counting down the days until next year. The administrative staff of YMCA Camp Letts is available to assist campers and their families year-round. Our diverse staff consists of counselors from many different states and countries. All staff go through an extensive screening process including interviews, multiple character references and fingerprinting by the state police and the FBI. All international staff are interviewed and vetted by the state department as part of their Visa application process. All staff have passed background checks in their country of origin that meet MD State, Federal and Interpol standards. Staff are selected based on the command of English and child care experience. Honesty, caring, respect and responsibility are the YMCA s cornerstone character values, and are modeled by all of our staff members. LODGING Campers live in separate gender, age-appropriate lodging groups with their counselors. A minimum of one counselor is assigned to every six campers. All cabins have indoor plumbing, except for the oldest boys. These campers live in our Rustic Cabins under the trees, and use the bathrooms in our nearby poolhouse and shower block. We allow for one bunk mate request per camper and both campers must make the matching request. Bunk mates must be within one year of each other in age and the older camper will always move to a younger cabin if necessary. While we do our best to accommodate camper s wishes bunk mate requests cannot be guaranteed. PAYMENT PLANS, SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE American Express, Discover, MasterCard, and Visa Cards are accepted for registration or payments. After payment of your deposit your remaining balance can be broken into more manageable payments. You may set up an AutoPay (EFT) for your credit card or bank draft payments so that your payment may be automatically deducted for you. All camp sessions must be paid in full two weeks prior to the arrival of your camper. YMCA Camp Letts seeks to make its services available to all families. To apply for partial tuition assistance, call Completed applications must be received before March 15, Financial assistance is made possible by the YMCA s Caring for Community scholarship fund. MEALS A healthy diet is an important factor in a successful camp experience. We serve three well-balanced meals daily in our clean, spacious dining hall. Our nutritious menus include fresh fruits and low fat milk, a daily salad bar, and a variety of vegetarian options offered daily. Most dietary requirements can be met. Please call us in advance if you have any questions or would like to discuss the needs of your camper. SAFETY Campers are allowed every possible freedom within the limits of safety. However, as YMCA Camp Letts sits on a peninsula, aquatic safety is of the utmost importance. Each camper s swimming skills are evaluated on the first day of camp to determine their abilities. Eligibility to use boats and/or participate in waterfront activities is determined by each camper s swimming abilities. All resident campers who receive our beginner swim band color (RED) will be encouraged to participate in our Swimming Safety Program. The goal of the Swimming Safety Program is to encourage each camper to increase their level of comfort in and around water and help them advance to the next band level. THERE IS NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE FOR PARTICIPATING IN THE SWIMMING SAFETY PROGRAM. HEALTH CARE Our Health Center is staffed by certified medical personnel, with a registered nurse on call at all times. All staff members are trained in emergency procedures and certified in First Aid and CPR. Additional medical facilities and emergency services are only minutes away in nearby Annapolis. CHANGEOVER WEEKEND Campers staying for multiple, consecutive sessions may choose to stay at camp for the weekend in between rather than check out. Campers will participate in special games and activities. Laundry service will only be provided for campers staying for more than 2 consecutive sessions. CAMP STORE We do not allow campers to carry cash. Instead we encourage campers to put pocket money into a Camp Store Account. A minimum of $10 may be deposited into a store account. The amount you wish to deposit in the store account can be added to your camp balance when being paid. This account is used to purchase items from the Camp Store only. Campers are unable to withdraw money from this account. Any remaining money at the end of each camp session is donated to our 2015 Caring for Community scholarship fund. This fund enables children to attend YMCA Camp Letts who otherwise couldn t afford it. 18 YMCA CAMP LETTS Summer

19 DETAILS AND POLICIES, CONT. TRANSPORTATION Bus service is available between Camp and select Y branches for $80 round trip or $40 one-way. Details are provided upon receipt of your confirmation packet. Airport transportation is also available upon request. Fees are applicable and vary based on airport. These fees are nonrefundable. SCHEDULE A camper is expected to enter Camp at the beginning of a session and to remain until the end of that session. No reduction in fees can be made for late arrivals or early departures. PHONE CALLS Use of the telephone by campers is discouraged. Special arrangements are always made for emergencies. CELL PHONES AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES It is our desire to keep camp an electronics free zone. We want campers to enjoy the moment and make new friends at camp without the distractions of social media and the intrusions of digital technology. Camp will always arrange for campers to make necessary phone calls. Camper cell phones will be confiscated if found and returned upon check-out. Please do not send your Camper with a cell phone. CAMPERS USING A CELL PHONE AT CAMP MAY BE GROUNDS FOR DISMISSAL! ELECTRONIC DEVICES INCLUDING MP3 PLAYERS, ipods, ipads AND PHONE CAPABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES ARE NOT WELCOME AT CAMP AND WILL BE CONFISCATED. REGISTRATION FEE When registering a camper for one of our one week overnight camps, a non-refundable registration fee of $300 per session must accompany your application to reserve your space. Day Camps and Try Out Camps require a nonrefundable deposit is $50 per session and those on the waiting list who cannot be accommodated will have their deposit returned. MEMBERSHIP If your child does not have a current membership with a branch of the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington, you are required to pay the non-member program rate. CHANGES TO REGISTRATION Any changes made from the original application must be in writing and accompanied by a $25 change fee. FEES All fees are payable as follows: Nonrefundable registration fee must accompany the application. The balance of the Camp fee, Camp store, transportation and Add-On activity fees are due two weeks prior to the camper s arrival. Bills are not rendered. Please mail all checks made payable to YMCA Camp Letts. If you are paying with a credit card or bank draft, Camp Letts can provide the form (in your confirmation packet) for this (EFT) service. In fairness to everyone, we will have to make substitutions from the waiting list if the full fee is not received within the allotted time. For payments made after the due date, we can only accept a certified check, credit card, money order or cash. MEDICAL It is assumed that the applicant is a healthy child in good physical condition and mentally able to participate fully in the program unless otherwise stated in writing to the Camp Director. Campers are to be examined by a physician within 24 months prior to their arrival at Camp and the results will be recorded on the form provided by YMCA Camp Letts. We will mail this form after the registration has been received. Maryland State Health Law requires all campers attending YMCA CAMP LETTS have a completed health form. Campers are not allowed to attend camp without this completed health form. The health form and copy of your insurance card should be mailed 2 weeks prior to the camper s arrival. If a camper needs special medical treatment, medication, hospital care, or physician s service during their camp session, his/ her parents or legal guardian will be responsible for these payments. COOPERATION It is agreed and understood that the camper will cooperate and accept YMCA Camp Letts standards of behavior. Failure to do so may result in discipline or immediate dismissal with no refund. REFUNDS The parent/guardian agrees and understands that in case of dismissal, homesickness or voluntary withdrawal, there will be no refund of camp fees. If it is deemed advisable by the camp to send a camper home due to medical reasons, a parent must request in writing a pro rata refund, with an attached doctor s note. THERE WILL BE NO REFUNDS FOR NO SHOWS OR CANCELLATIONS MADE WITHIN TEN DAYS OF EXPECTED ARRIVAL DATE. There are also no refunds for cancellation of activities due to related weather conditions. The YMCA reserves the right to refuse any applicant and to cancel any reservation. INSECT PREVENTION PROGRAM At YMCA Camp Letts, we care deeply about your safety and comfort during your visit to our camp. Amongst other safety procedures, we have implemented and have invested in a very proactive insect prevention system. Each residential building undergoes a regularly scheduled and rigorous inspection combined with heat treatments and environmentally safe chemical treatments by a professional extermination company. Most insects (including bed bugs) cannot withstand temperatures of more than 130 degrees Fahrenheit. This combination of environmentally safe chemical and heat treatments creates a very comprehensive and aggressive prevention system that underscores the fact that we are taking the business of insect eradication very seriously. One thing parents can do to help Camp Letts remain insect-free is to place all belongings, including sleeping bags and bedding that your child will be bringing to camp in the clothes dryer for 40 minutes on high heat. As you know, resident camping is the greatest experience you can have at our beautiful outdoor recreational environment at YMCA Camp Letts. We want you to enjoy all aspects of nature in its purest form. Rest assured you that we go out of our way to provide a safe and comfortable experience where you will build dreams that will last a lifetime. WAIVER FORM Any camper may have his or her photograph taken during the course of activities and it is understood that YMCA Camp Letts has permission to use such photos for promotion and various publications. LOST ARTICLES All left behind items are bagged and stored for one week. Please label all of your camper s belongings. YMCA CAMP LETTS ENDOWMENT FUND The YMCA Camp Letts Endowment Fund was established to continue the legacy of the YMCA summer camping programs for generations to come. Charitable donations to the YMCA Camp Letts Endowment (including planned giving) support the camp s enduring traditions. Gifts provide much needed revenue to enhance camp programs, grant scholarships, and maintain or improve facilities.
