1 Event Title: Troop Camping II (this course includes a mandatory overnight experience) Time Frame: 1 pre-session (3 hours) & 1 overnight (24 hours) Objective: participants will be able to plan & execute a troop camping experience in accordance with Girl Scouts of USA (Safety Activity Checkpoints), American Camping Association (ACA) and the New York State Health Department (DOH) using an A-frame, platform tent, lean-to and/or a stand-alone under 72 hours of occupancy. Prerequisite: Troop Camping I (or legacy equivalent). Update: every 5 years (3 hour course) Exceptions: Camp Counselor s and/or (for at least 3 years) above who worked at a Girl Scout camp or ACA accredited camp within NYS w/in the last 2years, GSWNY council volunteers who have completed the second (or higher) course of a legacy council (Buffalo & Erie Co, GSGV, GSNC, GSSW) outdoor training course (Beyond the Lodge, Level II, Level II, Stand-Alone, Trailblazer II, III, IV or have passed a equivalency test through a legacy council). Course Objectives Course Objectives Be able to plan and execute a troop camping experience in accordance w/gsusa, ACA, NYDOH in a using an A-frame, platform tent, lean-to and/or a stand-alone under 72 hours of occupancy. First Aid, CPR requirements Requires 1 adults accompany the troop w/current First Aid & CPR. (Responding to Emergency or higher may be required if camping off council owned property). Important change: Department of Health now does recognize 2-year CPR certifications. Non-scouts (children/adults attending any part of the trip you must purchase non-scout insurance) Scouts According to Safety Activity Checkpoint for Troop Camping, all levels are able to attend, Know your Scouts, Know yourself

4 Ratios (2 adults per every 5 Daisy Girl Scouts*, 12 Brownies, 16 Juniors, 20 GS 11-14yrs, 24 GS 15+yrs, plus an additional adult per 3 Daisies, 6 Brownies, 8 Juniors, 10 GS yrs., 12 GS 15+) *Check Volunteer Essentials, Safety Wise chapter. Troops are required to check Safety Activity Checkpoints for all required certification (ie: canoeing, rock climbing, other activities) 3. Smoking Policy There is absolutely no smoking in any council owned structure. Smoking must be conducted out of sight of any child. Clean as you go. Sources of light & heat Battery power, bring extra batteries Appropriate sleeping bags (no slumber bags) Water sources Camp council properties~water safe to drink, off council straining, boiling, purifying tablets (only if necessary, check Safety Activity Checkpoint) Bathing not necessary for stay less than 72 hours face washing, teeth brushing at sinks if available, if not, bring individual bowls. Meal Planning Packing for the overnight a. personal gear b. equipment to share (ie: stoves) How to plan a meal What are you cooking, ingredients, kitchen equipment, supplies~everything will be cooked outside (either a camp stove or a fire ring) Food storage/ cooking temps. Food storage All perishable foods must be refrigerated/kept in a cooler & maintain a temperature of at least below 40 Bear bag for non-perishable foods. Discuss types of bear bags and why they are needed. Note to participants to check with individual camping sites (non-council owned for specific requirements on bear bag/cans). All meat cooked must meet temperature guidelines prior to consumption (165 poultry & leftovers, 160 ground beef, 150 pork, 145 eggs & 140 beef) Plan a Meal Worksheet Quantity lists Meal ideas

Meal Planning Meal Planning Brainstorm meal ideas, all meals to be cooked either w/a camping stove or on a fire ring Lunch, dinner, dessert Sun breakfast no cook, discuss cooked breakfast options and for other non-cooked meals. Generate ideas by facilitators for precooked meat meals. Note: no raw meat can be cooked on a fire ring, all meat must be pre-cooked at home or in a lodge prior to going out to units.
