2 Camp Marymount, Inc. is a subsidiary of the Catholic Diocese of Nashville and is the only Catholic residential camp in Tennessee. It is also one of the largest Catholic camps in the south. Camp is open to girls and boys of all faiths between the ages of 6 and 16. The only restrictions are that campers come from homes that have taught them obedience, court e s y, and respect and that they are able to live in a rustic, outdoor, community setting. Marymount is located on 350 acres of rolling woods in Middle Tennessee. In this setting campers experience things that often cannot be experienced at home. T h e s e experiences include: paddling a canoe, proper care and correct use of a rifle and b ow, horsemanship, caring for the e n v i ronment, and many others. In addition, campers also learn the spirit of Christian fellowship by living in a cabin community. Community spirit is the basis of Marymount s success. Marymount campers come from over 20 states and have come from seve r a l foreign countries. Without regard to race, creed, color, or national origin, camp offers your child the opportunity to meet and form friendships with young people from across the nation and continent. The entire program is geared toward developing the individual spiritually, socially and physically within the midst of the community. Camp Marymount offers a summer of unique experiences, special friendships and great fun! About the Director Camp Marymount, Inc. is under the direction of Tommy Hagey. Tommy has a B.S. in Sociology from Middle Tennessee State University. He has been the Director since April of He was a camper in 1974 and was on staff from He was on the Alumni Executive Board for 4 years and has been the director of the Marymount Open Scholarship Scramble from its inception in His past e m p l oyment includes Mo n roe Ha rd i n g Children s home as a unit counselor and General Sessions Court as a Pro b a t i o n Officer. Tommy and his wife, Margaret, live at Marymount during the summer with their family. Spiritual Program Mass will be celebrated for all campers and staff on either Sa t u rday eve n i n g, Sunday morning or evening. The campers participate in the Liturgy by being the greeter, reading the Scriptures and being the altar servers. Mass is celebrated with a priest from the Nashville Diocese. Each camper also helps plan and participate in special communion services and prayer services. A traditional evening prayer closes the day. We expect construction of St. George s Chapel to be underway by February, We hope to have at least one Family Mass scheduled per session. A Mass Schedule will be posted at the beginning of each session. Counseling Staff The counseling staff consists of college students, high school seniors, yo u n g teachers and occasionally seminarians. Most staff are former Marymount campers, who return summer after summer to share their enthusiasm and love of camp. Our counselor return rate is currently over 90% and extensive background checks are conducted on all staff each ye a r. T h e counselors bring a wide range of qualifications and talents to enable them to be successful during activities. Each counselor is extensively trained on the responsibilities of his or her job prior to the opening of camp. There are one or two counselors in every cabin and the ratio of campers to program staff is approximately 6 to 1. Health Care While the entire counseling staff is trained in First Aid and CPR, routine health care is administered by a staff person, who supervises the infirmary around the clock. The camp health care provider is p resent at camp and works closely with a re g i s t e red nurse and physician (who can be reached at any time). 1

3 Camp Programs Junior Ca m p : Junior Camp offers a s t ru c t u red environment that guarantees p a rticipation by each camper in many unique camping experiences. The emphasis in Junior Camp is on the cabin community. Developing the relationships of camper to camper and camper to counselor, along with building group unity thro u g h community living, are the main goals. Activities are experienced with the cabin or assigned activity gro u p. The cabin is grouped according to grade in school and age while the activity groups are mixe d, giving each camper the chance to share with all ages. Senior Ca m p : The Senior Camp p rogram offers a less stru c t u red enviro n m e n t w h e re the campers are expected to be more self-sufficient, and their activities are designed with this is mind. The cost for Senior Camp is a little higher so that the older camper can experience a two or three-day trip. Other events may include: a Nashville Sounds baseball game, a day canoeing or some special entert a i n m e n t. Girl campers entering their freshman year and boy campers entering eighth grade may become senior campers. Water Front Activity Ma rymounr is fortunate to have a beautiful, five acre, spring-fed lake. Every camper takes a swim test upon arrival to determine his or her ability, and all are offered Red Cross approved swim classes to enhance ability. The waterf ront is under the strict s u p e rvision of a Red Cross Water Sa f e t y Instructor and Lifeguard. There are very explicit rules concerning water safety including use of flotation devices, all of which are explained on the opening day of camp. Camp Activities Red Cross Swim Lessons Arts and Crafts Athletics and Games Nature Horsemanship Wagon Ride Archery Riflery Marymount Mutterings - Camp Newspaper Canoeing Gardening Drama / Dance for Girls Wrestling for Boys Wilderness Awareness Water Sports Frisbee Golf About This Logo Camp Marymount, Inc. has earned a mark of distinction by being an accredited c a m p of the American Camping Association. Cu r re n t l y, only about one quarter of all camps in the United States h a ve this designation. It indicates that Marymount is committed to the highest s t a n d a rds established for the camping industry. Eve ry three years trained camping p rofessionals, not affiliated with Marymount, observe us while in operation, to compare our practices with the standards of the industry. For over forty years the ACA has s p o n s o red this vo l u n t a ry accre d i t a t i o n program. Camps must comply with nearly 300 standards and earn a minimum score of 80% to become accredited. T h e accreditation process consists of nearly 300 questions that are applied to every aspect of our operation. We must comply with all mandatory standards affecting health and safety of the campers. While the State of Tennessee has many regulations regarding basic sanitary and food service concerns, ACA s standards go a step further in addressing programming, personnel, health care and management practices related specifically to camping. 2

7 Our Camping Creed We Believe: That Marymount camping develops sound healthy bodies. That Marymount camping through its activities gives directed expression to a liberty and exuberance of spirit that is wholesome for its youth. That Marymount camping develops a balanced personality and qualities of leadership. That Marymount camping fosters a deep and lasting comradeship between campers. That Marymount camping teaches self-control and self discipline that makes for strength of character. That Marymount camping uses the beauty, power, and solemn wonder of the outdoors in fostering deep spiritual qualities. That Marymount camping gives a balanced, total experience in true living, forceful, inspirational and lasting in its impression of the body and soul of our campers. So complete and appealing a lesson can be taught only in a camping environment where campers are their basic selves, on their own, and where the presence of God can be seen, heard and felt in the forms of nature and in the Sacramental Forms in the Chapel.
