3 LETTER FROM THE CAMP DIRECTOR Dear Scoutmasters, Welcome to the Camp V-bar Winter Camp program. Winter Camp primarily focuses on Eagle required and classroom style Merit Badges many held indoors. This year, we are including six Merit Badges from the list of Eagle required, and ten Merit Badges that have not been offered in recent years. And of course, there are the perennial favorites, such as the full complement of Shooting Sports. We are continuing the High Adventure program, re-introduced at Thanksgiving Camp. Designed for Venturers and older Scouts, participants will spend the week in the back country of camp, using Scout skills, and having a one-of-a-kind experience see details on page 9. Salmen Scout Reservation is constantly evolving to better serve you. Some of the changes for 2018 have included: High Adventure Program for Venturers and older Scouts GaGa Ball Pit (Courtesy of Wood Badge S ) Mountain Bike for rent (personal bikes welcome) New Campsite (Tunica) New Latrines (Sioux, Tunica, Chickasaw) Gumbo Troops And we are continuing our Gumbo Troop program! We bring together individual Scouts from different Troops, and provide qualified, trained adult leadership while at camp. 4 CAMP FEES DATES GENERAL CAMP INFORMATION GENERAL CAMP INFORMATION, DATES, FEES Order ALL merit badge class supplies online: When you register you will pay a program fee for supplies you would have purchased in the Trading Post. Once you have registered and paid the program fee your Scout will receive the supplies during class. Additional supplies will be available on a limited basis in the Trading Post at camp. 7 PROGRAM DETAILS LEGEND FOR PROGRAM AREA CODES Recommended for any Scout Recommended for older Scouts / Venturers Adult Training One Period Program Full Day Program Two Period / Half Day Program Eagle required Merit Badge Prerequisites Additional Fee for Supplies Cannot be completed at camp PATHFINDER PROGRAM (FOR NEW SCOUTS) The Pathfinder Area is designed to acquaint our first-year campers with life at Camp V-Bar and give them many of the skills that they need to achieve the rank of First Class. Scouts will be given the opportunity to work towards First Aid and Fingerprinting merit badges. They will also have the opportunity to earn requirements for the ranks of Tenderfoot through First Class. As part of this program, Scouts will learn how to do the following: use a compass, tie basic knots, safely use wood tools, first aid, outdoor cooking, identify poisonous plants and snakes and much more. The Patrol System will be used and taught in this area to help the First Year Camper better understand this basic talent of the Scouting program. This program will encompass all periods of the day. Scouts need to bring an OLD adult T-shirt and a personal first aid kit. Note: Adult help is encouraged in Pathfinder. Adults helping in Pathfinder will learn the needs of their younger Scouts and gain valuable experience in helping Scouts progress towards the First Class Rank. PATHFINDER PROGRAM 1. Scout Spirit and Patrol Activities Scout Oath, Scout Law, Scout Motto, Scout Slogan, Outdoor Code, Scout Sign, Scout Salute, Scout Handshake, Scout badge Patrol name, patrol yell, patrol flag Materials supplied by camp include patrol flag material. Scouts should have a Boy Scout Handbook. 2. Citizenship Repeat Pledge of Allegiance Display, raise, lower, and fold flags Flag ceremony Citizenship rights and responsibilities interview Service project Materials supplied by camp include American flag and flagpole for flag-raising, a U.S. flag for folding practice. Scouts should have a Boy Scout Handbook. 3. Hiking and Orienteering 7
8 Safe hiking rules Finding directions without a compass Using map and compass Five-mile hike Orienteering course Identify ten wild animals Identify ten native plants Materials supplied by camp include a measuring tape, topographical map, compass, orienteering materials and an orienteering course. Scouts should have a Boy Scout Handbook. 4. First Aid First aid for relatively minor emergencies including minor cuts and burns, blisters, bites, nosebleed, frostbite, sunburn, poisonous plants, eye injuries, and heat exhaustion; bandage ankle, head, arm, and collarbone First aid for more serious emergencies including choking, stopped breathing, serious bleeding, poisoning, rabid bite, snakebite, shock, heatstroke, hypothermia, and heart attack Transport injured Make a first aid kit Materials supplied by camp include wound cleaning and bandaging material for practice, moleskin for practice, splinting material for practice, a first aid kit for demonstration, materials for making personal first aid kits. Scouts should have a Boy Scout Handbook. 5. Wood Tools, and Fire Wood tool usage Materials supplied by camp include knife, axe, saw, sharpening stone and other sharpening materials, wood, fire starting materials and matches. Scouts should have a Boy Scout Handbook. 6. Rope Care, Knots, and Lashing Whip and fuse rope ends Square knot, two half hitches, taut-line hitch, bowline, timber hitch, clove hitch When to lash; square lashing, shear lashing, and diagonal lashing Lash a camp gadget Materials supplied by camp include short lengths of both synthetic rope and natural fiber rope for whipping, matches and a candle, tape, string, short and medium lengths of rope for practicing knots, medium lengths of rope for lashing, poles for lashing. Scouts should have a Boy Scout Handbook. 7. Camping Present self-prepared to camp Select campsite and pitch tent Camping requirements should be signed off by Scoutmasters based on camp set-up by individual Scouts. Scouts should have a Boy Scout Handbook. 8
9 HIGH ADVENTURE PROGRAM Re-introduced at Thanksgiving Camp, the High Adventure program is designed for older Scouts and Venturers who want to experience the best of Camp V-Bar, but not necessarily work to complete Merit Badges. Spend the week hiking the Outpost Trail, Canoeing, Pioneering, Rappelling at the Gravel Pits and more! All cooking will be done on the trail, and participants will camp in a different location each night. Participants are encouraged to bring backpacks, and treat this as a backpacking adventure. Don t have a backpack or your tent is more suitable car camping? Not to worry hike with your daypack with your essentials, and your VBar Camp Staff will transport your gear to the next campsite. Participants should bring: Weather-appropriate clothing for the duration, including sturdy shoes / boots Tent or hammock setup Weather-appropriate sleeping bag / pad Mess kit / eating utensils Backpack or daypack with essentials & stuff sack for all gear Pocket knife / first aid kit / water bottle Toiletries Camp will provide: Camp stoves / cooking equipment Trail meals 9

On Camp V-Bar Staff Dear Scoutmasters, The Camp V-bar staff is committed to providing quality merit badge instruction and exciting evening programs in order to give your Scouts an experience that will last a lifetime. Working at Salmen Scout Reservation has been one of the most fulfilling and exciting experiences of my life. Staff members learn the value of teamwork, and dedication while honing their Scouting skills, leadership and teamwork skill, and making lifetime friends. These are skills I dedicate my life to and expect nothing less from my staff. If your Scouts join our staff, they will become role models for hundreds of youth and make a valuable impression on the lives of others. If there are Scouts in your troop who you feel are the best of the best, encourage them to join one of the greatest camp staffs in the country. We have a passion for Camp V-bar and we want to see it grow and become even greater as the years progress. In order to do this, we need new staff members with innovative ideas who are willing to work hard to continue the tradition of making Camp V-Bar the great camp that it is. We want your best Scouts.
