Volume January 2016 The Privileged View Steve Beste, President Holiday Party. Tom Richards once again hosted the club s annual Holiday Party at his home at the Airpark. See the picture spread later in this newsletter.
January 2016 Page 2 Chuck Tippett honored. The Directors voted to give their award this year to Chuck Tippett for his years of outstanding service to light aviation in our area. As Tom Richards once remarked, There s nobody here who doesn t owe Chuck Tippett a favor. I took the picture below at the Udvar-Hazy Museum in 2013 at the Smithsonian s Become-A-Pilot Day. Chuck had just flown in to the event, escorting Tom Simmons and me so that we could participate, too. Typical Chuck. Jim Heidish did the artwork. We gave a framed version to Chuck at the party. Jim Heidish retires as Secretary. After six years of solid service, Jim Heidish has retired as Secretary of the club. He and I came into office together in January As you know, most members don t make it to every meeting. They rely on Jim s minutes in the newsletter to tell them what happened. Legally, the minutes need list only what motions were moved and what happened to them. But Jim s minutes were much more informative. You could tell who the visitors were and what people talked about. In other words, he wrote about what really happened. I m sure you ll continue to see him at meetings. When you do, thank him for his faithful service all these years. And consider volunteering to be the new Secretary. The position is vacant. Fly safely, Steve
January 2016 Page 3 This Month s Fly-In Destinations To encourage all of us to get in the air more, the following is a list of fly-ins I found within (about) 100 NM of the Warrenton Airpark which are occurring in the next month. Sources are: The EAA Calendar of Events, the AOPA Calendar of Events, and the Virginia Department of Aviation Calendar of Events. Date Event Description Location Distance from 7VG0 Sat, Jan 9 / 8:30-10 EAA 1202 Egg and Pancake Farmville Regional 84 NM AM Breakfast Airport (KFVX) In the absence of organized fly-ins this month, let me recommend a destination I went to a couple of weeks ago: Chesterfield airport (KFCI) has a restaurant on the field which serves a delicious Sunday brunch buffet, and it is only 76 NM south of the airpark! See for information.
January 2016 Page Holiday Party As usual, the Holiday Party was our best-attended event of the year, and one where we get to meet many of each others spouses. Tom Richards hosted the event at his home at the Airpark. He also provided a spectacular bonfire at the end, for which the weather cooperated. Many thanks to Jane Alt who took most of these pictures. 11 January 2016 Page 11 The Airfield currently known as Warrenton Airpark is rich in history, having been in existence since This document describes the flow of events that have shaped the field and operations over the past 80 years. Part A presents a chronology of ownership, activity and improvements. Part B describes the current operations in some detail along with essentially an inventory of currently-based aircraft. Some of the material in this document was extracted (nearly verbatim) from a website developed by Paul Freeman - VA Fauquier.htm. Part A: Chronology Phase 1: The First 12 Years to 1948 (as Zieger Field) According to the book Virginia Airports by Vera Rollo and Norman Crabill (published by the Virginia Aeronautical Historical Society), an operating license was granted to Clifford Zieger on 7/28/37 on land he owned. Zieger is seen at right posing with his new Fairchild F-24 in about The May 1st, 1937 aerial photograph (below left) from Fauquier County records shows the 263- acre parcel in a dashed yellow outline with the 1900 runway adjacent to Beach Road. The lower right portion slightly enlarged shows the outlines of the eventual 2-runway configuration. In the slightly-enlarged photo (below right), Green Meadows Road can be clearly seen, noting that its route and intersection with Beach Road appear exactly as today. Also noted here is the creek, Licking Run, that flows somewhat parallel to the runway and feet to its south-west. Also of note is what appears as a bright rectangular spot about 250 feet from the southeast end of the runway - very near the turn in Licking Run.
January 2016 Page 12 At that time this is a rock quarry, which remained active through the 1960s, with all of the stone for the floor and chimney of what is called the Club House, and the chimney of the other residence coming from that quarry. In the early 1970s, the stream was diverted into the quarry to form what is now a one-acre pond - although it might have found its own way during a flood stage. The earliest aeronautical chart depiction which has been located of Zieger Field was on the 1939 Washington Sectional Chart shown at right. This is a somewhat misleading indication since it would lead one to expect to see that field literally along side of Highway 17, whereas it is actually 1/2 mile south-east of the indicated location. A circa aerial view of Zieger Field from the 1945 Army Air Force Airfield Directory (courtesy of Scott Murdock) below shows how a second runway was opened around 1941 running SW to NE on the south side of Licking Run. Having the two runways separated by a flowing stream presented obvious problems. The solution was to install a culvert that allowed the stream to pass underneath an extension to the newer runway so that the two runways would intersect. Although obvious, this was not done until the mid-1960s - after Mayor Beatley acquired the property. The directory shows Zieger as a 21 acre T-shaped configuration with 2 sod runways (separated by a stream), measuring 2,000 northwest/southeast and 1,800 northeast/southwest.
January 2016 Page 13 A flight school was operated at the field during WWII, with most of the students being women. It has also been reported that the field was used to train Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) during the war. (The WASP is a little-known military organization that existed during WWII composed of women who ferried aircraft within North America.) The Washington Sectional Aeronautical Chart compiled and printed by the US Coast and Geodetic Survey and sanctioned by the Civil Aeronautics Board (predecessor to the Federal Aviation Administration - FAA) on October 15, 1947 shows the airfields that were in existence in this early post-wwii time frame. A portion of this chart is inserted below. The airfields are referred to as Aerodromes with their locations indicated by circles having tick marks at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o clock. The circles without tick marks are designated landing areas with no facilities. Some interesting things are shown on this chart: Zieger (as Warrenton Airpark was then named) is shown near the left edge (1). At that time there were a number of airports clustered around Washington DC in addition to National Airport (2). Manassas (3) is shown to be where it is today about half way between Zieger/Warrenton and Washington DC. Of special interest is Blue Ridge (4) - although only a designated landing area in 1947, this is now the site of Dulles International Airport.
January 2016 Page 14 Timber, Trees are Falling! By Robert Doak That s right, just as the title says... It was a beautiful sunny, warm, 70-degree December day and a gathering of lumberjacks arrived to make some long-awaited improvements to the north end of the Warrenton Airpark. With the approval of Mr. Tom Richards, I was granted permission to undertake the task of removing some trees with the help of some fellow Flying Club 1 members. on hand were Loyd Peterson, Jackie George, Woody Weaver, Tom Richards, Dick Martin and myself. As everyone knows, the North End has been a challenge to many for some time now, especially to new flyers and visitors alike. What we re talking about is the ingrowth of trees where Licking Run crosses under the concrete portion of the airfield runway. The area is quite a bit narrower than the rest of the airfield, which is giving the deer an advantageous spot to cross being that it was the narrowest portion of the airstrip, which brings up many safety questions. As of now, approximately 20 trees have been removed, and the gap is now opened quite a bit. The tree line, once completed, will give a much straighter and cleaner look to the airfield, which in turn means fewer deer crossing the runway. There are, as of this writing, some brush piles that need to be removed, but by spring all should be back to normal. See the before and after photos of the work done. My sincere thanks to all who helped to make this project possible.
January 2016 Page 15 The gap before - note the trees encroaching on the left The gap after - the group of trees is gone!
January 2016 Page 16 Minutes of Flying Club 1 Board of Directors Meeting On January 1, the Board of Directors held a virtual meeting under section IV of the by-laws. The at-large directors terms expired with 2015, as did Jim Heidish s term since he did not stand for re-election as Secretary. Therefore, the board members on January 1st were: Jim Birnbaum (Treasurer) Steve Beste (President) Dick Martin (Vice President) Len Alt (immediate past President) Director-at-large Larry Walker indicated that he wanted to retire from the board, so Steve did not re-nominate him. Instead, he nominated Lucy Ooi and Pete Bastien to be directors at large for Both were approved unanimously. This was the first time we d ever done a formal virtual meeting. It turns out that the laws of Virginia have several stipulations for such meetings of Virginia corporations, of which Flying Club 1 is one. A transcript of the Reply All thread of the virtual meeting is available to anyone who wants it. Submitted by Steve Beste, President
