11 Transporta3on Please no>fy Joan Mibach if there is someone you wish to ride with that is not a family member. No>fy if you are not traveling with the caravan. Ø Week 1 leaves Saturday, June 24 at 6 a.m. Ø Week 2 leaves Saturday, July 8 6 a.m. Ø Caravans leave from St. Julies Parish Ø Passport check before leaving San Jose. Ø 480 miles from San Jose to La Marita area of Tijuana, Otay Mesa Border Crossing. Ø About 8-10 hour drive. Carpool 3-5 per vehicle. Ø Caravan with others, in phone contact throughout. Ø Stop on you own for lunch along Highway 5. Ø Arrive Chula Vista by 4 p.m. (eat and gas up). Ø All meet in Chula Vista to cross border together. Ø One Spanish speaking person per car, if possible.

Ø Need Mexican Auto Insurance (Baja Bound) BASICS will coordinate Drivers need to complete the Baja Insurance Applica3on Ø Drivers have copies of passenger s health and emergency records in a special binder in each car. Also contains cell phones of people in other cars.
13 Where We Stay San Eugenio Parish Compound New Sleeping Dorm Terrazas II Site Kitchen,Dining Church q q Compound is enclosed and gated with 24/7 security Two 2 story dorms with bathrooms on each floor with 3-4 showers, sinks, and toilets. Sleeping Dome q Men and Women sleep on separate floors q Some cots provided, urge you to bringing your own. Only single wide madresses. q Main kitchen and dining room site where breakfast and dinner served. q Town is one of the poorest, very transient area.
14 Where We Stay, Con3nued Terrazas I Site q Compound is enclosed and gated with 24/7 security. About 1 mile from TII. q 1 story building with kitchen area, chapel, classrooms, outdoor shaded tables. q Separated men s and women s dorms. q 6 showers, sinks and toilets in each dorm. q Breakfast and Dinner will be served at Terrazas II. q Construc3on storage, prebuilding and pain3ng. q Second site for Children s, Teen s and Mother s outreach programs.
15 Where We Stay 2017 will be largest trip in our 13 year history, 130 travelers. All travelers will all stay at Terrazas II. Terazas I will be staging site for Construc7on. Loca7ons about 1 mile away from each other, both fully secured with 24/7 on site security. Sunday will be team construc7on effort with all travelers helping with construc7on prebuild and pain7ng.
16 What We Eat q q q q q q q q q Some food brought from US; fresh food bought locally Home Site Cook Team prepares breakfast each day (variety of hot & cold choices) Home Site / Cook Team prepare lunches for Building Teams (sack lunches of sandwiches, fruits, snacks, drinks). Also prepares daily snack for children. Program staff on site prepare own lunch. Lunches delivered to build sites about 10:30 a.m. Some dinners cooked by local parish women under Cook Team guidance and direc3on Local vegetables are fully cooked; fruit is carefully washed with bolled water. More US purchased fresh fruit and vegetables included in the menus. Do not buy from local market vendors Drink only bolled water Let us know of special dietary restric3ons (on applica3on form) and discuss with Joan Mibach before travel.
17 A Typical Day 5:00 am Cooks: Wake up and begin breakfast prepara7on 6:00 am All Volunteers wake up call 6:30 am Breakfast - Morning Prayer 7:15 am Construc7on Teams Load up and drive to sites 7:15 am Home Site: Clean breakfast and begin to prepare lunches 7:30 am Children, Teens, Mothers programs set up for AM session 9:00am Morning Programs begin 10:30 am Lunches and Snacks delivered to job sites 11:30 am Morning Programs end Noon Lunch, at TII for site program staff. 1 pm Construc7on: Con7nue building. 1:30 Week 2 programs at T1 1:30 4: pm Cooks: Prepare Dinner 4:30 pm Construc7on: Return back to compound, clean up for dinner 6:30 pm Dinner with everyone at Terrazas 2 7:30 pm Evening Gatherings and Reflec7on 10:00 pm Teen Curfew 10:30 pm Lights out
18 Liturgy, Spirituality, Reflec3on Our mission provides 7me for travelers to par7cipate in liturgy, connect with the local community to understand the local situa7on, and to reflect on our experiences in Tijuana. Ac7vi7es include: Mass with the local parishes on Sunday morning and Friday evening. Morning prayer before breakfast. Construc7on crews provide lunch for the family as a 7me to get to know each other. Local teens to par7cipate in leadership of our programs. Build families come for dinner and share their stories. Evening Reflec7on including a several guest presenters. Day 7me visits to school for the disabled, aids clinic, medical clinic, and previous build sites. House Blessings. Game Night and Talent Show Night.
19 Personal Safety Safety in the Surrounding Area q We are guests. Act and dress conserva3vely. q Be cognizant of the poverty around us. q Crime and drugs exist in the area just like at home. We are about an hour drive from the main border where drug trafficking exists. q We have not had a bad experience in 12 years. q Avoid crea3ng tempta3on. Don t leave items in visible places. q Don t bring valuables on the trip (laptops, expensive cameras, credit cards, jewelry, etc). NO WiFi in the compounds. q Use fanny- packs or backpacks versus purses or bags q Bring only enough $$ to buy food on drive to/from Tijuana q We don t go shopping. May invite local cratspersons to show their wares on compound for sale.
20 Personal Safety Safety in the Compound q The compounds are enclosed and gated; 24- hr security provided. Cars also stay within the secure compound. q Site has a local parish caretaker living on grounds. q Communica3on via radios and cell phones between sites, compound. No WiFi available q Do not leave the compound except for scheduled events and programs. Stay in groups outside the compound. No 1- on- 1 with teens. q Keep passport on your person. q Keep the sleeping buildings locked during the day. q Keep your belongings together in the sleeping areas.
21 Safety - Your Health q Bring your own water bolle. q Stay hydrated; drink plenty of water. Urine should be light yellow q Modern medical clinic within miles. q Drink and rinse with bolled water provided only even brushing teeth. Large containers of water provided by home site. q Don t drink local tap water or eat local food. Risk of geung ill. q First Aid people and kits at each site and compounds. Emergency response instruc3ons at each site. q Make sure your tetanus is up to date (especially if working construc3on). No need to get special shots or immuniza3ons, Hepa33s A vaccine recommended by not required. q Sun protec3on: sunscreen, hats with neck protec3on, long- sleeve shirts, bandanas. Insect repellent with min. 20% Deet.
22 Safety - The Zika Virus q The CDC has issued an alert for travel to areas where Zika virus is spreading. hlp:// q Virus is reported in Mexico. q Avoid virus by avoiding mosquito bites travelers should use insect repellent containing 20% Deet. (products include Culer Backwoods and Off! Deep Woods). We will have available for all travelers. q Most concerning for women who are pregnant. Men and women considering pregnancy up to three months ater travel should consult a doctor.
23 Safety Cell Phone Usage Cell Phones that work in Mexico are a benefit for communica7ons while in Tijuana. Let us know if your cell phone will work in Mexico. If you take a cell phone, suggest geqng interna7onal phone coverage before you leave the US. No WiFi available. TURN OFF DATA ROAMING BEFORE CROSSING THE BORDER.
24 A Few Rules q We are guests. Be respecyul of the local culture. q No alcohol in the compounds or job sites. q Evening mee3ngs are mandatory. q No toilet paper in the toilets. If you forget, you fish it out scoopers provided! q Minimal use of electric appliances like hair dryers. q Don t give money or gits to people on the street. It sets the wrong message (i.e. pity, favori3sm, beggar mentality). q Gits are only given through the programs, e.g: to the families for whom we are building the kids in the Children s Program families who par3cipate in our community talk as thank- you.
25 Packing q Pack light, comfortable, reusable. q No laundry on- site. q Pack your own toiletries. q Nothing fancy nice casual for Mass. q Bring own towel, sleeping bag, pillow, blanket, linens. q We have some cots suggest you bring your own light weight cot. q Sleeping space limited. PLEASE only single wide inflatable malresses and sleeping pads. q Bring ear plugs if you re light sleeper snoring, barking, roosters. q Handout - Personal Packing List. q Check website for recommended addi3onal items for construc3on workers.
26 Gits for Our Families q Gits will be presented during the House Blessings. q We present a framed display board and photo signed by all par3cipants during that week. q We provide loaded backpacks for the children of the families we build for. q We provide a reusable storage container of food and household items.

SITE SAFETY Ride to and from construc3on sites with the same driver. Teens do not leave work sites without Leader approval. Re- apply sunscreen and insect repellent. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER.
