Impala Rally Saturday morning started early for Kobus and Teresa. The plan was simple, drive to Bolt in Fochville. Buy a Sissy Bar in preparation for the Goudini trip in May, get back home, install the Sissy Bar and take it on a test drive to the Impala rally in Hartebeespoort. The trip to Fochville was on point, the selection of the correct Sissy Bar created a bigger conundrum. Which model will fit on the bike? Obviously the M109R model was not in stock. Picked one that looked more or less fine with the afterthought of just having to drive back if it does not fit. Perhaps we should have gone with the bike. Made a quick plan to go to Allan in Carletonville and measure the newly bought Sissy Bar on his bike. Obviously the Sissy Bar selected was not the correct one and back we went to Bolt. Thank you Allan for saving me a trip to Roodepoort and back. Swapped the Sissy Bar at Bolt and came back home. Had to make a small modification to the bracket as the holes were slightly out of kilter. Off we went to the Impala rally.. It was really busy at the rally, only issue was a stretch of road where roadworks were undertaken and a stop- n-go introduced. Continue on next page.. 2 The atmosphere at the rally was very festive and one could see that some of the visitors have been partying since Friday. The stalls from one rally does not really differ to another and it is no surprise that some of regulars were also present at the rally. In total 6 Ulysses members were at the rally, 3 from Joburg North, the two of us and then Etienne from Durban. The extreme exhibition riders were crazy and pulled of unbelievable stunts. The bands and DJ also did not disappoint. When darkness started to decent we decided to leave in order to miss riding in the dark on bad roads. 3 SATURDAY DAY 10 RH MARCH 2018 aving been included in the 2018 H Riders Group means a lot more than just riding a bike to Cape Town Cancervive Meeting On Saturday I attended the Riders Introduction and Briefing with most of the participants. These include members of the Team, Survivors and Supporters. The project was discussed including events, fundraisers the Ride in September as well as the outreach programmes. I met some a amazing people, heard some touching stories and cannot wait to go on this journey! We had makeup done by Revlon, one of our sponsors, as well as a photoshoot afterwards. A few apologies were posted on UlyChat. Daniel said it was raining on his side while Kurt was unable to join. Kobus and Theresa were at the Impala Rally, lucky Andre was in Sabie! Stuart was supporting an Annual Classic run. Mike had family visiting and Bryn has family from the UK. Fin and Rob had a Capetonian visiting... So where are our other Members? What are u getting up to? Please share... So Jackie joined some other friends on their ride, had brekkie and arrived home safely after going past Fin and Rob. And then there was one :-( Page 4

7 RIDING TIPS Developing a sixth sense So you should learn to foresee every crazy action of the rest of the traffic, so that you are prepared. As you will see, you will develop some sort of a sixth sense for these situations: just before someone hits you by doing something very stupid, you "know" what is going to happen, and you are able to escape from the situation safely. You will develop a sort of internal list of mistakes that occur often. When somebody makes such a mistake, you will have seen it before he makes the mistake. The longer you ride, the more kilometers or miles you have ridden, the bigger your list of possible stupid actions gets, and the less often you will be taken in surprise. Practise on the highway On the highway, you can train yourself in looking by checking whether you had "foreseen" everyone who passes you. If that happens without having foreseen it, you should have checked your mirrors more often, or you should have been better in calculating and remembering. (The best country to practice, is of course Germany ;-) Off the highway you practice by telling yourself everything you notice. And here too: actions that you didn't foresee mean that you should get better in looking and thinking. It might seem impossible, to be able to foresee every stupid mistake of everybody around you, but even when you are able to do so, that's not enough! Hidden danger Except foreseeing mistakes of everybody you see, you must also foresee mistakes of everybody you don't see. That van that's parked over there: every moment a ball may roll from behind the van, followed by a child. That tractor driving towards you, could hide an invisible, hasty car, that could overtake the tractor without noticing you. A sign for a bar at the side of the road? That means a drive access, so somebody can come out of it, or somebody around the corner could stand still to drive into the drive access. Every obstacle blocking your view can hide a moving object (vehicle or person or animal). THAT MAN PADDY T hree Irishmen, Paddy, Sean and Seamus, were stumbling home from the pub late one night and found themselves on the road which led past the old graveyard. Come have a look over here, says Paddy, It s Michael O Grady s grave, God bless his soul. He lived to the ripe old age of 87. That s nothing, says Sean. here s one name Patrick O Toole, it says here that he was 95 when he died. The Seamus yells out, Good God, here s a fella that got to be 145! What was his name? asks Paddy. Seamus stumbles around a bit, awkwardly lights a match to see what else is wri en on the stone marker, and exclaims, Miles, from Dublin. Page 7
