1 Mike & Key Amateur Radio Club Seattle Volume 33, Issue 1 January 2005 Club s biggest event depends on us all Michael Dinkelman / N7WA President I guess it s time to beg again. I shouldn t have to. So far, about 30 people have signed up as workers for the Flea Market. When you consider that many of those signed up are committee members or friends of committee members (and not club members), then it looks pretty dismal. We have over 200 members in this club. We need over 100 people to work this event. It makes it difficult when I have to spend my time at the club meeting asking every person individually to sign up. If you are thinking about it right now, haven t signed up, and know you re planning on working the event, send me an or call on the phone. If you me, include your name, call, phone number, the area you want to work in, and the days and times you re available. On Friday, we need people for Setup, Pallet Crew, Security, Registration, Traffic Control, An- The Inside Story Flea Market Committee nouncing and Country Store. On Saturday, add Tickets and Teardown. If you re new and don t know the time frames these jobs generally run, then ask. Generally, though, we work from 10 A.M. to 8 P.M. Friday and from 5 A.M. until we drag ourselves out (around 6 P.M.) on Saturday. The earlier you sign up, the easier it is for the chairperson of Programs & Activities A t our January meeting, Coast Guard Radio Officer Michael Sealfon, WA2OCG, will explain how amateur radio operators can assist with homeland security. Wondering how the Flea Market works? The February program will tell you everything you need to know. A trifecta of major club activities is coming up this spring. Page 3 your area to make up a schedule. I also like to make worker badges available at the February meeting. If you aren t signed up before that meeting, you won t get your badge until the event. Also, please be flexible in your work area and time available. Not everyone can work in the Country Store from 9 to 11 A.M. We promise we won t work you eight hours straight (unless you re crazy enough to be a committee member) and you ll have plenty of time to check out the goodies. Remember, this is the primary fund-raiser for the club. I belong to another radio club with dues running $25 a year and that group doesn t have near the resources of this one. All we ask, in addition to those cheap $12 annual dues, is that you put in a few hours of labor once a year. When you figure that it gets you a front-row seat at the biggest ham event in the Pacific Northwest, how can you beat it? Please sign up. My is eskimo.com. My phone is Preparations for the Flea Market are steaming ahead. Page 3 Interested in DX? Check out the Visalia convention in April. Page 5

3 K7LED Relay Michael Dinkelman / N7WA January 2005 A trifecta of activities is coming up From the Hot Seat President hope the new year found you and your family I safe and contented. However, with the new year upon us, activities in the club will be kicking into high gear on several fronts. You ll find separate articles on some of these subjects elsewhere in this Relay. First and foremost, the Flea Market our primary fund-raiser is March 12, less than 60 days away. Committee members have been doing their part to get everything lined up. Now, it s your turn to sign up as workers. Please do so at the next meeting, if you haven t already. Elections are also coming up in March at the regular club meeting. Nominations for officers and trustees will be taken at the next three meetings. Please start thinking about nominees or even nominating yourself. On the heels of the elections will be the annual Awards Banquet. We need a chairperson to step forward this month in order to have enough lead time to find a location and get word out in the newsletter. Also, the Awards Committee (see Sam Sullivan) would be happy to entertain your thoughts for award nominees. Now, a bit of news about the Salvation Army HQ as a meeting site. The Salvation Army recently had some conflicts over the use of its facilities at night by various groups. There have also been some security issues and attempted break-ins. While the Mike & Key is not the problem, we have been asked, along with others, to curtail our use of the facility for board and Flea Market meetings. Regular club meetings are unaffected. This shouldn t be a big issue. All board and Flea Market meetings used to be held in members homes or other mutually agreeable sites. (Frankly, I miss that, which may be why I m not too upset about the situation.) Of primary concern is that we have the building available to us for the regular meetings. Also, remember that we are guests at the facility and that we should act as such. Not that we haven t it s just good to remember that. Flea Market preparations are on track Michael Dinkelman / N7WA President The meeting was held Jan. 4 th at the home of Dawn and Curtis Hanner. The committee extends our sincere thanks to them for hosting the meeting and for providing refreshments and really great cookies. In attendance: Hal Goodell, Diane and Mike Dinkelman, Jim Etzwiler, Dawn and Curtis Hanner, Pam and Gary Bryan. Topics discussed: Insurance: Treasurer was not in attendance, but Jack Grimmett mentioned at the board meeting that the renewal form had been obtained and would be mailed out. Facilities: The 4x4 group will be using the Fairgrounds and setting up while we load out (as usual). They will be making use of the newly built facilities. We need to secure propane tanks used for heaters at the Gold and Orange gates (fire marshal requirement). Hal has picked up supplies for some new signs. Table sales: It s been slow, probably one-third to half of what usually occurs by now. Hopefully, things will pick up as we approach March. Plenty of room on the first floor, so far. Flyers: They ve been labeled and delivered to Hal. Expected to be mailed second week of January. Letters to clubs (with flyers) will go out about the same time. Country Store: Discussion about worker signups (not many) and raffle baskets. We may have some baskets for raffle. Pam is doing some legwork on donations and the Dinkelmans have promised to fill a couple of baskets (one garden, one chocolate). Announcing: Pretty much ready to go. Tickets: No chairperson. We will either need to draft someone on site or do it among the current committee chairs. Loading dock: Have supplies and looks ready to go. Next meeting: Feb. 1, with Mike Eakins K7OV hosting. Key Club Dates Next General mtg.: Jan. 15 Board mtg.: Jan. 26 Relay deadline: Feb. 11 3

Dan Hamfests: Working on verifying the list.
