Volume 43, Issue 01 Mike & Key Amateur Radio Club Seattle January 2015 From our Club President... Happy New Year! Next Up: Fleamarket By Ivy Nelson-Groves WA7IVY, President Happiest of New Years to All! I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday season and a great New Year. Best wishes to all of you in 2015! Thank you to Rita KD7CNU and everyone on the Membership Committee for the wonderful party after our December meeting. It was a lot of fun and I hope everyone had as much fun as I did! Our 2015 budget was passed last month with a minimum of fuss and conflagration. Thank you, Dave KB7PSN, for all your hard work in preparing it for the membership. We will be having a Field Day work party after the January meeting (hopefully it won t be rainy) at Alan KB7SVU s place to work on the trailer axles. We should be getting the stripped trailer, sandblasted and coated, by the General Membership meeting. Thank you, Alan!! Our next major event is the annual Fleamarket in Puyallup on Friday and Saturday, March 6-7, This is how we fund virtually all of our club activities and manage to keep our dues so low. The Fleamarket can seem like an overwhelming event, but when we have enough volunteers, it goes smoothly. No matter what your physical abilities, we have places where you can help. Mike has set up VolunteerSpot again this year for managing the volunteer signups. If you haven t already received an invitation, or don t do the whole on-line thing, please contact Mike N7WA and he will get you all set up. Please do sign up, even if it is for a single shift. Multiple shifts are also welcomed and encouraged. We really depend on our membership to put on this event, not only to fund our operations, but also as a service for the ham radio community in Western Washington. It is the place to be in early March! We have a couple of activities right after our Fleamarket: our annual Club elections and the Awards Banquet. The awards banquet is a nice opportunity to see club members in a relaxing setting, and to thank those who have contributed to the club and have a nice meal together. The Membership committee will pass along the details as they become available. Regarding our club elections, we will have the elections for all of the officers (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Activity Manager) and for Trustees #1, #3, and #5. Most of the other officers plan on running for the second year of their positions (we limit officers to two consecutive terms; after that, it is someone else s turn). Due to some extenuating personal issues, I will not be running for President of the Mike and Key ARC this March. It is a wonderful honor to serve you all, but I want to concentrate more on the other things I do with the club and give someone else a chance to serve. See ya ll on the 17 th. Go Hawks!! 3 M&K Club - January Activities By Peter Glaskowsky K4PNG, Activities Manager Computer-Aided Amateur Radio I ll be taking the stage myself this month, presenting a summary of the various ways in which you can use a personal computer to help run your ham station. Please send your ideas for program topics to me at k4png@arrl.net or just post them on the MKARC Yahoo group. M&K January Door Prizes By Peter Glaskowsky K4PNG, Activities Manager If you missed out on the Elecraft KX3 or the other prizes in December, we have another radio to give away this month a Radio Shack PRO channel handheld scanning receiver donated by very own club president Ivy WA7IVY. Also in the January raffle is a pair of Sears Craftsman tool bags, an assortment of Ryobi drill bits and driver tips, a 12V battery monitor in kit form, and three different antennas a Nagoya NA-771 dual-band HT antenna for Baofeng, Wouxun, and similar radios that have male SMA connectors, a Motorola mobile antenna tuned for the old 800-MHz cellular band (note that the whip can be retuned or replaced), and a mobile NMO mount with a matching NMO whip antenna for the 2M band plus a second whip for the MHz NOAA weather radio band. M&K Radio Officer Report By Hal Goodell N7NW, Radio Officer Nothing new to report this month. Live camera feed: M&K-FM 15: Workers Needed! By Michael Dinkelman N7WA If this is January, it s time for me to start begging. I have no shame. As of this writing, we have about half the worker positions filled for our upcoming Fleamarket. The area in the worst shape is the Country Store virtually no one has signed up to work this area. Part of the problem is we have lost some longtime workers here and we need some new bodies. It s a pretty cushy job when you think of it. All inside work, selling stuff for people who don t have a table. We need help in this area for Friday and Saturday. The rest of our holes are mostly on Saturday. There is nobody signed up for hospitality that s where the food is. Michelle only needs a couple helpers through the day. The first shift of Ticket Sellers is looking good but the next two shifts are unfilled. All shifts of Ticket Takers are unfilled. Security is on the short side for Saturday morning. This primarily involves being at the doors between 8AM and 9AM after we start selling tickets but before we open. The Pallet Crew for teardown is lean. We need lots of bodies to get all those people out starting at 3PM. The Mike & Key Fleamarket generates the majority of our annual operating budget. Without this event, there would be no repeater and no Field Day. All those wonderful social events the membership committee is managing would have to go away unless participants were willing to pony up quite a few more dollars. Dues would have to be raised simply to rent the Salvation Army building we have our meetings in. I won t do the math, I ve done it many years in these pages, but the bottom line is that dues would have to go to $50-$70 a year to fund this Club at current levels and I don t see anybody clamoring for less spending. Personally, I really look at this event as just a fun way to pay my dues plus you re on the inside of the biggest and best run Ham event of the year in Washington State. Some of our customers think it s the best run on the west coast. I ll have my laptop at the January meeting and if we have WiFi, I ll be able to sign you up on the spot. You should have also received a personal invitation to Volunteer Spot which allows you to do your own sign-ups. If you are a new member and you're scared to volunteer, talk to me. In 28 years, we haven't lost, killed, or maimed a newbie yet. If you are old time member and haven't signed up, why aren't you showing the leadership we need? Already signed up? Maybe there is another job you could sign up for in a different area after you get tired of walking the aisles? Done begging for now. 3

Public Service: Rainier2Ruston 50-Mile Race By Alan Hughes KB7SVU I was asked recently to be in charge of communications for the Rainer 2 Ruston run to be held on June 6. This is a 50 mile run along some very rough trails with about 900 participants. The start is at the Carbon River Ranger Station and goes through Orting, Puyallup, Fife and on into Tacoma along the water front. I know that the club members who did it last year with me had lots of fun. This year I will need 16 people to cover the course. If you are able and would like to help, please me at: kb7svu@juno.com. Thanks. Alan Hughes KB7SVU. M&K Membership Committee Report By Rita Danielson KD7CNU Happy New Year from your Membership Committee! I trust everyone had a wonderful Holiday season and things are settling down. Decorations have found their way back into storage and New Year s resolutions have been made, and probably some have been broken by now. One resolution we would like to make is to do more for the club and to add to our committee. How can we do more? Glad you asked. We need input from the membership. What would you like to see us accomplish? Currently we send our membership renewal notices by or USPS mail. We plan major club events such as the upcoming Awards Banquet and the club Christmas party. We are also sponsoring the 40 th anniversary Field Day at Fort Flagler T- Shirt design contest. We meet after the general meeting and program at a local restaurant for lunch and meeting/planning. You are always welcome to join us. We hope you were able to attend the December general meeting and Christmas party. We had a good time. Subway sandwiches, vegetable trays, cookies and beverages. We had some fun competitions. Greg W7HRC won the ugly sweater contest with Rachelle KG7QCN taking second place. We also had some blind categories that were judged by the Membership Committee. I can t recall who all won the various categories, my apologies, but you know who you are. We had the best Santa beard, the Grinchiest/Scroogiest person, the most decked out in red and green, the most bling, the best hat, and the best overall costume. This month we will be collecting your T-shirt designs for the 40 th anniversary of Field Day at Fort Flagler. Please give your designs to one of the membership committee members. We will review and present the three best to the club membership for a vote. We would like to get all involved in this. The winning designer will get a free T-shirt. We will be meeting this month following the general meeting and program at Geri s Casual Dining and Catering at 509 S Third in Renton. We will be planning the Awards Banquet and the Membership table at the Flea Market. We will also be discussing the T-shirt designs submitted. 73 s/88 s -- Rita KD7CNU [Reference: T-Shirt template on the M&K Websitehttp://mikeandkey.org/other_images/T-shirtTemplate.pdf. There is a web page describing the competitionhttp://mikeandkey.org/tshirt_design.htm.] Ham Radio Exams: 2014 Training Re-Cap By Daniel Stevens KL7WM The Training team had a very good year in The numbers are 10-15% better than Another teacher has joined the team, Howard Schutlz, W7HS. He upgraded to Extra from the 2013 October class. In 2014 Howard, W7HS created slides for the New Technician Question Pool and for the 2012 Extra Question Pool. Daniel Stevens, KL7WM, help illustrate these training slides decks. Daniel, KL7WM, also created a new Illustration Handout booklet with 152 illustrations for the Technician and General classes. The Team, from 11 classes, trained and licensed 184 New Hams, up from 169 in They put on 7 Technician classes, 3 General classes and 1 Extra class. The Extra class passed 28 of 32 students. Most of the class scored 43 to 46 out of the 50 questions. The class pass rate was over 95% and many perfect scores on the Technician exams. 25% of the Technician students also pass their General exam at the same test session. 3 students passed all three test. The team held 13 VE sessions at 9 locations and passed or upgraded 256 candidates. Many of the test session had two grading lines to give a higher level of service to the candidate by speeding up the grading process. One session had 43 candidates who took 77 elements in 2.5 hours. We want to thank the 30 VE who made the test session possible. The training team is working on material for the New General Question Pool which becomes effective on July 1, There are 7 classes scheduled in addition to the Technician Class in January which had 28 students. Many feel these classes are the best with the illustrated slides, quizzes, videos, show and handle items and Illustration Handout booklet. The 5 instructors made these classes fun: LW, K7LWA, Dustin, KF7FK, Howard, W7HS and Daniel, KL7WM. Late Receipt Monica Cook KF7QLX writes: Here are pictures of the newly painted trailer. The trailer work party will have to be put on hold until February, due to Alan having a family emergency in Spokane. Alan called to say that he received a call from his daughter to let him know that his 17 year old granddaughter had passed away. -Monica KF7QLX 4

M&K-FM 15 A Flea-Market Primer [-March 7, 2015-] By Michael Dinkelman N7WA What is this Fleamarket thing-a-ma-gig coming up? For those that are new to the Club, this article is an attempt to provide relief from the blank stares I get when I ask if someone wants to sign up and work the event. It describes what the Flea-market is, its importance to the Club, the level of support required, and the job categories involved. What is it? The Mike & Key Flea-market is a one-day Hamfest held on a Saturday during the first part of March of each year. (For those who care about such things, it s the 10 th full weekend of the year not counting weekends that includes New Year s Day.) This year, that will be March 7 th. It s held at the Pavilion Exhibition Building on the Western Washington Fairgrounds in Puyallup. This is a two story building with 40,000 sq. feet of exhibition space. The event requires setting up over 300 tables and accommodating 600 sellers and their helpers. We typically draw people through the door. While this is a one-day event for the public; for the Club, it requires an additional day of set-up on Friday. This Fleamarket will be our 34 th. After so many years, it s a tradition in the Pacific Northwest and arguably the largest Hamfest in the region certainly in Washington State. We draw vendors from the entire West Coast and buyers from Canada, Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Why do it? Well, it s a heck of a lot of fun but primarily, it s a fundraiser for the Club s activities. Because of this event, we can keep the dues at a ridiculously low rate of $12. It s been calculated that if we lost the Flea-market and had to rely on dues alone that we would need to have dues in the $60-70 range to maintain current levels. More likely, we would just have to de-fund a number of activities or charge members extra to participate. We also use the funds to help produce our yearly Special Events and Information Guide Booklet given away freely at the event and at the yearly Communications Academy event. Club Support. Because all of our members benefit directly, it s really a responsibility of our members to participate in making this event happen. It takes a minimum of 120 people to run this event smoothly. We accept help from non-members too so if you can talk your spouse into it or have some reliable friends, we would be happy to include them in the worker community. All workers receive a badge that entitles them to be on the premises during setup hours just like the sellers. That gives you a head start on finding the best deals (a very nice perk if you ve ever fought the crowds). We have a number of different areas that require workers and they support all types of physical limitations. No area is any more important than another though some may require some expertise or on-the-job training. Members may signup using an on-line signup tool (Volunteer Spot), sending to n7wa@arrl.net, or catching me at a Club meeting. The on-line tool includes worker descriptions. Members are encouraged to work in several areas throughout the event. Security - probably the simplest of worker assignments, it s important none-the-less. Your job depends on where you are assigned however, it usually involves walking the aisles watching for people lifting covers off of tables and making sure everyone has a badge. From 8-9AM on Saturday, we need a large contingent of security at the entrance doors prior to letting the crowd in. We do hire two professional guards to provide security out at the ticket booths and to handle issues that might require their level of help. Security is active during setup hours (2PM-7:30PM Friday, 5:30-AM-8:30AM Saturday). Physically, you should be able to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time. We also have positions sitting down in front of the loading doors watching for badges. Tickets working the ticket booths does require some expertise at handling money (making change) and the ability to work under pressure. There will usually be two of you in a booth. We sell tickets from 8AM 2PM Saturday. This is an important job and because you are handling Club funds, it s limited to Club members and their spouses. There are two other ticket related jobs taking tickets and hand stamping. Those jobs are outdoors so be prepared for the weather of the day. Announcing a willingness to interface with the public is good here. You ll be answering questions and providing limited announcements. Announcing is also where the talk-in station is located and the door prizes are drawn. No physical requirements here, you can sit indoors the entire time. Announcing is active from 2PM-7PM Friday and 5:30AM-3PM on Saturday. Country Store this is our consignment area. People bring in items here when they don t have enough to fill their own table. (Workers can place items in the Country Store too and sell them commission free.) A working knowledge of equipment is helpful in this area and you will be dealing with the public. The Country Store runs from 2PM-7PM Friday and 5:30AM-3PM on Saturday. No physical limitations. Loading Dock this area requires the most number of people. You need to be able to work in a team environment. There is some physical labor required here. We don t load people s equipment but we do move empty pallets by hand and full pallets using jacks. You are working mostly under cover outdoors. This job takes a bit of on-the-job training to learn the system but it s not difficult. You will be interfacing with our vendors and a good attitude is important as they can be cranky at times. The loading dock is active from 2PM-7:30PM Friday, 5:30- AM-8:30AM Saturday, and 3PM-6PM Saturday. Registration/Traffic Control if you are interested in registration, please contact Diane at dmdink@clearwire.net or Registration hands out vendor packets and sells tables but job requirements are very specific and it s best you talk to Diane before committing. Her greatest needs are in the area of traffic control. Traffic Control mans the incoming and outgoing gates plus the choke point at the loading dock. This involves being outdoors in the weather and standing for extended periods of time. (These are usually very special people but highly appreciated.) This area is active from 2PM-7:30PM Friday, 5:30-AM-8:30AM Saturday, and 3PM-6PM Saturday (loadout). Setup On Friday, from 9AM to 2PM, a large number of workers are needed to help setup the Pavilion. This mostly involves setting up 300+ tables and 400+ chairs. It s physical work but important. We work in pairs (mostly) to reduce the burden. Also, at this time, Announcing, Registration, and Country Store will be getting ready to open at 2PM. We do provide lunch at noon on Friday for our setup workers. Teardown often forgotten, we need just as many people to help teardown the tables starting at 3PM on Saturday as we did setting up on Friday. If you aren t involved in performing loading dock duties or traffic control, we need you to stay on and help teardown and cleanup. Yes, we are all tired but it needs to be done. Administration, VE Examiners, Hospitality these areas have specific requirements and are not generally open to public signups. If you have an interest in giving VE Exams, contact Scott ag7t@arrl.net. For Admin or Hospitality, see an event Chairperson. 5

Everything gets built around one big board. The front. M&K Member Special Project: K3 Buildout By Michael Dinkelman N7WA I ve been a Ham for 42 years. My last NEW out-of-the-box radio was purchased in I bought it out of my earnings from working as a deck hand in Westport for a summer. It was a Heathkit HW-101 and it represented a significant investment for a junior in High School. I had a great time putting it together though Soooo many boxes! I could never get the SSB to work. But, I didn t care about SSB anyway. Everything rig since then has been secondhand. This year, I decided my main rig was getting a bit long in the tooth 20 years old. The radio arts have progressed quite a bit. Most radios are built using microprocessors, surface mount components, and parts requiring a Soooo many tiny parts! microscope to see. Most are really just computers running really sophisticated software - Software Define Radios (SDR). That s what I wanted! I ended up choosing another kit for my new radio. Alas, there was no soldering involved in this one. It was wholly a mechanical project from Elecraft, the K3. It was supposed to take about 10 hours of assembly time. I figure it was closer to 20 hours, over two weeks, when I finally finished. The hands don t work with small parts quite so well as 40 years ago, the eyes don t see as well, and whoever heard of Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) way back then. The instructions are remarkably detailed - certainly as good as the old Heathkits. I had fun and took some pictures along the way. Oh, and the SSB works too... Four sides and some smaller board. It s starting to look like a radio. We have power! 6

Training from Jim Monson K7JGM: Subject: 7 Licensing Classes scheduled for 2015 We have 7 Licensing Classes scheduled for 2015 already - 5 are for Technician and 2 are for General. This information has been sent to Jim, KD7BAT to post. Technician Class description is This class is for everyone and will help someone with no radio knowledge to become an experienced radio operator. There is a 97% pass rate and 25% of the students pass the second radio test also. There are 10 practice quizzes, and a handout booklet with over 150 illustrations and 5 instructors to answer your individual questions. There are many show and handle and tell items to see and feel. Video songs and informative YouTubes adds up to make this a fun class for all. Many have driven over 90 miles to attend this class. The recommended book is the ARRL Technician Licensing Manual, 3rd edition. It cost about $30 and several are available. The registration is so the handout can be prepared for you.
