1 VOLUME 2, ISSUE 4 T H E I N F O R M E R APRIL 2006 INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Featured Rock Hound Sallie Lightfoot FEATURED MEMBERS CONT. UPCOMING EVENTS UPCOMING SHOWS METAMORPHIC ROCKS NEWS CLIPS 6 SECRETARY S REPORT PRESIDENT S MESSAGE POINTS OF INTEREST: Featured Member Rocksicles President s Message Secretary s Report Buttons Cook Book Bar Ditch Art Folklife Festival Charles and I live across the road from the Rock Club building. Don Brenholtz invited Charles to come and see what they do at the club; I tagged along. It was so interesting and the members were so friendly. It was not long before we became members. This was in about We love the field trips. We have gone to the Big Bend area several times. I remember on the first field trip to the Big Bend area, we dry camped on the Walker Ranch. I found a 22 lb red jasper rock. The most fun and interesting one was in 1992 when a group of 7 club members (Russ and Dee Cable, Ray and Joy Cassell, David Dudich, and Charles and I) went on the memorable 4,000 mile 11 state field trip. We began at our club house; went to Apache Creek, New Mexico. At Denver, Colorado we visited a huge Gem show. In Laramie, Wyoming we visited with Mr. Shingleton, a rockhound there; and in Rock Springs, Wyoming we visited Russell Sims, another rockhound. We stopped at Fossil Butte National Monument in Wyoming to see fish fossils; then on to Spencer, Idaho to dig for opal at the Spencer Opal Mines. The next stop was Dell, Montana where we had dinner at Yesterday s Calf-A. We had 2 boats rented to go down the Yellowstone River hunting Montana Agate. We stopped at Theodore Roosevelt Park and saw the Badlands in North Dakota; saw Mt Rushmore in South Dakota; passed through Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and back into Texas. Most of the time when we travel, we are looking at the sides of the road and wonder if there might be something interesting there. We stop whenever we can and have time. Our favorite is a cutout on the side of the road in Goldthwaite, Texas where we have found many fossils. My favorite is the sea urchin. When our children were building a house in a new housing addition in Pflugerville, Texas and we were visiting them, Charles went to walk our dog. He came rushing back to the house and said, Come see what I found! In an area where more land was being dug for water and sewer lines, he had found some beautiful fossils, exogyra ponderosa. We gathered several. The next time we went back, the houses had been built or started to be built and the fossils were covered up by houses and hidden forever. Another trip we took was to Young Harris, (Continued on page 2)

2 VOLUME 2, ISSUE 4 Page 2 (Continued from page 1) Georgia to a Lapidary School. I studied Wirecraft and enjoyed it very much. By just using square and half round wire, you can make many kinds of jewelry. It is a challenge to come up with new designs in which to put the stones. I guess this is my favorite part of our hobby. I love to see others creations. I like to share what I know about this with others. I like to learn about other aspects of our hobby. Therefore, if at all possible, I take classes that are offered. I have taken several silversmithing classes; beading class, chain making class, and just finished rocksicle class. I have served my club as President for two years, Secretary/ Treasurer for several years, and now 2006 is my third year to serve as Show Chairman. The annual Show at the Civic Center is such a challenge. I try to come up with ways to get our show and club out to the public. I guess the thing that makes rockhounding so special to me is to be out in God s creation and be the first to see what He has created for His children to enjoy. Sallie Lightfoot Sallie at her display case of crosses she made in Sallie and Charlie working on rocksicles in a recent class taught by Norma Harrison. Rolling Rock Club Sallie presenting Bobbie Owens a certificate of completion for a wire craft class taught by Sallie.

5 If you had been at this program presented by Calvin Donaghey you would understand why your rocks have waves in them. Calvin explained the metamorphic processes that rocks go through when exposed to the pressures and heat during mountain building events. The discussion also got into plate techtonics and the creation of new rock material at the bottom of the ocean. You can get name tag buttons or buttons with other information on them for the show this year. Just let me know what you want done and pay me... Jerry Davis
