VOLUME 34, ISSUE 11 JUNE 2013 FROM THE PRESIDENT DONNA WILEY Welcome to the Zonta Club of San Antonio year. Thanks to the following club embers for stepping forward to take a leadership position in the club: Marilynn Franke - Vice- President; Lisa Bailey, Treasurer; Pris Truesdell, Secretary; Regina Walker, Director I; and Linda Coney, Director II. I am honored to take the position of President again and will work to generate some change in our club. Also, I want to thank Lisa Keckler for being President during I hope I can maintain your energy within the club. Linda Wong provided a great overview of the status of the longterm care industry at our May meeting. I was not surprised to hear her company is moving to gender-based pricing and premiums for women will be higher. Her presentation did move me to take some action in regards to my long-term care. One of my favorite elements of being a Zonta member is awarding scholarships to deserving women. Please attend the June meeting when the Zonta Club of San Antonio will award a Young Woman in Public Affairs and a Jane M Klausman Women in Business scholarship. If you have any suggestions on changes for the Zonta Club of San Antonio, please let me know. My I-phone is always with me and I can respond to s or phone calls. 2 VOLUME 34, ISSUE 11 PAGE 2 MEMBERSHIP MEETING, MAY 15, 2013 The monthly meeting of the Zonta Club of San Antonio (ZCSA) was held May 15, 2013 at the Petroleum Club. The meeting began at 6:00 pm with the recitation of the Zonta Blessing. Members present were Lisa Bailey, Linda Coney, Marilynn Franke, Tina Gatewood, Lisa Keckler, Pris Truesdell, Regina Walker, Donna Wiley, and Linda Wong. Business Meeting The business meeting was called to order at approximately 7 pm. The Treasurer presented April 30, 2013 report. The total balance reported for Zonta Service Foundation was $7, and Zonta Operating Fund total was $9, The treasurer s report was filed for review. Donna Wiley, Treasurer resigned from the treasurer s position. Lisa Bailey was nominated and accepted the position of Treasurer for the year. Marilyn Franke moved to approve meeting minutes for April 2013 and it was seconded by Lisa Bailey. The April 2013 meeting minutes were approved. Program: Linda Wong gave an in-depth presentation on Long Term Care Insurance. Authors Luncheon: Donna Wiley presented the Authors Luncheon Income Statement and a comparison of Income Statements for 2013 and 2012 LINDA CONEY Authors Luncheon. The comparison showed that the fundraiser; did not meet our fundraising goals. However, it still has good public relations value; for community awareness of Zonta. Service: Girlsville May 4, 2013 service date, was a huge success with the ice cream breakfast, games and prizes. A vote was taken and passed to do quarterly service at Girlsville; versus every other month at Girlsville. Installation of Officers for : The following persons were installed as officers: President: Donna Wiley; Vice President: Marilynn Franke; Treasurer: Lisa Bailey; Secretary: Pris Truesdell; Director 1: Regina Walker; and Director 2: Linda Coney Scholarship: Candidates for the Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) and the Jane Klausman scholarships were discussed. Marilynn Franke moved to award scholarships to Joi Stevens of St Mary s Hall as the scholarship recipient of YWPA; and to Natalie Martinez of Trinity University as the Jane Klausman scholarship recipient. The breakfast was great fun and the girls enjoyed it. Our president, Lisa Keckler, stated that the mom in her would not let us just serve ice cream, so she brought a huge breakfast casserole that was devoured so quickly there was none for our members to sample. Donna Wiley joins the girls at the smallest table. Linda Coney oversees the girls Regina Walker presented the prizes that she provided to the girls with the most wins and the most bunkoes. 4 VOLUME 34, ISSUE 11 PAGE 4 Speaker Linda Caswell All Things New Our speaker this month will be Linda Caswell. All Things New, a Christian ministry based in Oklahoma City was founded by Linda Caswell in She has relocated her headquarters here and joined a countywide effort to combat the sex trade. An unused two-story convent has been converted to a safe house for women working to be free of sex trafficking. It has six bedrooms with brand-new linens, comforters and pillows. Each has a personal sink and space for cribs. The floors have new carpet. A second unit is set for completion here in June. The facilities are believed to be the city's only residences solely dedicated to help this population. Referrals will come from law enforcement agencies and other authorities nationwide. Human trafficking is estimated to be a $32 billion industry worldwide. Texas and local officials are working to protect victims, foreign and domestic, and raise awareness. The Bexar County district attorney's office's prostitution caseload prompted it to form a human trafficking unit last year. Many cases stem from teens and children not attending school and devoid of parental supervision, said Kirsta Melton, an assistant district attorney in the human trafficking unit. The safe houses could not arrive here sooner, according to the South Texas Coalition Against Human Trafficking, a network of public and private agencies and individuals. This issue for Caswell is personal. As a younger woman, she was pimped in the French Quarter of New Orleans, she said, lured by cash, then forced by threats. She escaped to rural Kansas and a new life with her two children. She studied to be a nurse, and through an instructor's influence, shed her atheism to attend church. Faith and her own past typically opens doors to helping victims. After working in prison ministries, she joined Concerned Women for America as the socially conservative organization's Oklahoma director. That job led her to start safe houses there. Local volunteers, businesses, and churches have joined together to help fund the homes. Beth Saxton persuaded her 50-member Alamo Heights church, Kingdom Life Fellowship, to donate about $20,000 toward interior decorating at the old convent. Her mom, Roxanne Spradlin of Temple, did custom paintings. San Antonio businesses have pitched in. In the kitchen, fresh tulips rest in a Pellegrino bottle near pineapple and orange mint sprouts. On the counter is a new Keurig coffee maker and a pink Kitchen Aid mixer. In the dining room is a long table crafted from recycled red oak by local woodworker Attie Yonker. I just loved the idea of the house being something that could feel like a home rather than something mish-mashed together, said Saxton, 32, a stay-at-home mom and one of the many volunteers drawn to the project. We are planning a shower for the All Things New home at our meeting on June 19. They request that all items be new.
