8 D-DAY : Remembering the Battle that Won the War - 70 Years Later The world still owes a great deal to those who sacrificed so much. Page 8 of 10
9 On 6 June 1944, a date known ever since as D-Day, Allied troops crossed a narrow strip of sea from England to Normandy, France, and took back Western Europe from Hitler s Nazi regime. Code-named Operation Overlord, this endeavour involved more than 5,000 ships and was the most massive amphibious assault that the world had ever seen. The landings were conducted in two phases: an airborne assault and an amphibious landing of Allied infantry and armoured divisions on the coast of France. First, an attack force of 24,000 American, British, Canadian, and Free French airborne troops filled the night skies above southern France. Then, on five wind-swept Normandy beaches code-named Sword, Juno, Gold, Utah, and Omaha, over 160,000 troops came ashore. The airborne assault into Normandy as part of the D-Day invasion was the largest use of airborne troops up to that time. Paratroopers of the US 82nd and 101st Airborne divisions, the British 6th Airborne Division, the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, and other attached Allied units took part in the assault, flying from bases in southern England to the Cotentin Peninsula in approximately 925 C-47 airplanes. US General Dwight D. Eisenhower, on the eve of giving the D-Day order on June 6, 1944: You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-inarms on other fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world. Winston Churchill addressing the House of Commons on the day it was all happening: what a plan! This vast operation is undoubtedly the most complicated and difficult that has ever taken place. It involves tides, wind, waves, visibility, both from the air and the sea standpoint, and the combined employment of land, air and sea forces in the highest degree of intimacy and in contact with conditions which could not and cannot be fully foreseen.. It is, therefore, a most serious time that we enter upon. Thank God, we enter upon it with our great Allies all in good heart and all in good friendship. Page 9 of 10
10 QUEEN QUESTION: George III lived for 81 years, 239 days and reigned for 59 years, 96 days. (Longer than any predecessor) Queen Victoria lived for 81 years, 243 days and reigned for 63 years, 216 days She outlived and out-reigned George III-to become the longest reigning monarch. Queen Elizabeth II has outlived her- will she also out-reign her? Feb 6, 2014= reigned 62 years April 21, 2014= Birthday-88 years old June 2, 2014= 61 years since coronation June 14, 2014=Official birthday celebrations Although she was actually born on April 21, the official birthday of Queen Elizabeth II is celebrated each year in the UK on a weekend in June for purely practical reasons. The day usually presents more acceptable weather for a public party! This year, watch for all the official pomp and public festivities to take place in London on Saturday, June 14, 2014 In the UK, the most important and watched event related to the day is the lively and historic military ceremony known as Trooping the Colour - with a parade down The Mall to Horse Guards Parade, including a fly-past of military aircraft - as well as gun salutes fired at noon at Hyde Park. If you're not in town on the big day, the festivities are traditionally aired live, all or in part by the BBC. As well as in London, events related to the Queen's Birthday are scheduled throughout Great Britain, in New Zealand (first Monday in June), Australia (second Monday in June), Canada, (on the last weekend in May on Victoria Day) when schools are usually closed and bank holidays called to celebrate a nice, long three-day weekend! Last time the queen rode a horse for Trooping the Colour was 1986, after which the Queen's horse, Burmese, retired. The horse was not replaced, as the Queen decided to ride in a phaeton (carriage) and review the troops from a dais, rather than train a new charger. Page 10 of 10
