Bring money so you can bid also!!!! (So sorry about the January meeting having to be cancelled at the last minute. Kayleigh was in a bad wreck- miraculously not hurt- and it was raining so hard.) New member: Marissa Hampton- and hosted already! WELCOME MARISSA Cottage Committee Update: Victoria exhibit back in January to coincide with Season 2 of Victoria showing on KPBS. Also the return of Harry Potter exhibit with the addition of the Hogwarts Express train thanks to Gabby! Dennis has updated the Doctor Who exhibit to include the newest doctor. Manx Exhibit set for March. Hosting at the cottage: Please contact Fran if you can host any Saturday or Sunday. Winter hours are 11am to 4pm. Hosts can do 5 hours or elect to do a shift from 11 to 1:30 or 1; 30 to 4. It is a lot of fun. Please sign up! Please see dates available on page 2 and/or book your date in March! Village Fair/ Beatles Tribute Band: Mark your calendar for Saturday April 14 th. We will be doing a combination Fair and lawn program that day from 11am to 5pm. Food, Fun, Entertainment. All hands will be needed on deck. The Baja Bugs have agreed to play for us again. New additions being worked on will be Great Baking show tent selling our baked goods, British motorbikes, and the corgis will be back! 3 HOUSE OF PACIFIC RELATIONS PAGE: NEXT HPR MEETING: Sunday February 4, 2018, noon, at Hall of Nations. Come and observe how HPR is run! NEXT LADIES AUXILIARY LUNCHEON: Wednesday February 14, 2018, noon, at the Hall of Nations. Hosted by House of USA. Men invited also. Only $4 for a lovely luncheon and cultural information shared. HPR QUEENS UPDATE: meetings are February 11 and 25 in the Hall of Nations, 10am to 11:30am. The girls give cultural presentations at the meetings. The Queens and Princesses will escort their House Presidents at the President s Inauguration Ceremony on February 17th h. A LOT of food items were collected for Mama s Kitchen at the January community service event. The Queens/ Princesses will host at all the cottages and in the Hall on Feb 11 th and kick off the Sampler lawn program on Feb 25th HPR INSTALLATION DINNER/DANCE: Saturday February 17, 2018 at the Country Club, Rancho Bernardo. Tickets are $42 each and have to be purchased through the House. HPR NEWS: (From January meeting.) Hosting Hours: The City has agreed to change the Saturday and Sunday Permit hours from strictly 12 to 5 to a more flexible 5 hours between 11am and 5pm. Most cottages prefer to be open 11 to 4 in the winter and 12 to 5 in the summer. New cottages: Right of entry has been obtained- now bids being made to get construction started lawn program and Hall of Nations hosting schedules are still being finalized. SHOULD be done at the February meeting. Amended Bylaws and Standing Rules are finally completed and should be printed for distribution in February. House of USA is being refurbished and regenerated under the leadership of 3 HPR Executive Board members. Ethnic Food Fair: Delegates were asked to get a vote from their House about possibly changing the EFF this year. Votes will be tallied at the February meeting. Fran s book has been printed! It is a history of the HPR/ International cottages (not individual Houses). Spiral bound copies of the over 350 page book and available at $42 each through HPR Finance Committee. (Please let Fran know if you want to purchase one.) There is one available to preview! Hall of Nations hosting for February: House of India will be hosting each Saturday and Sunday of the month. Lawn Programs for February: Sat Feb 3 and Sun Feb 4= House of China festival. Sunday Feb 11: HPR Queens will be hosting in the cottages and at the Hall of Nations Saturday Feb 24: House of Spain Read-a-thon Sunday Feb 25: HPR Sampler Program- 2pm to 3pm HPR Queens will be the opening entertainment. 6 Queen Elizabeth II- her first ever interview? NO! Buckingham Palace calls it a conversation! In a rare recording of the Queen in conversation, the Monarch has been discussing her memories of her own coronation as she watched ITV s broadcast of the ceremony in It s thought she has never watched the footage of her coronation before. And there is an equally rare glimpse of the Queen s sense of humour as she examines the Crown Jewels her Crown Jewels. She spoke for a new BBC documentary to mark her coronation s 65th anniversary. The St Edward Crown is only ever worn at the moment of crowning itself. So the Queen was looking at the item she last saw as a young 27 year old woman in Westminster Abbey. The St Edward Crown together with the Imperial State Crown which is used after the coronation and at the State Opening of Parliament are both part of the Crown Jewels. The collection of sacred and ceremonial objects is perhaps the most famous and yet least understood jewellery collection in the world. Most of the highly symbolic objects date back to the coronation of Charles II upon the restoration of Monarchy in The crowns were transported from the Tower of London to Buckingham Palace for the filming. The Queen told the programme that her coronation was a beginning of one s life really, as the sovereign. I ve seen one coronation, she said referring to her father s in 1937, and I ve been the recipient in the other - referring to her own. She calls that pretty remarkable. Watching the footage broadcast at the time in colour by ITV, The Queen, speaks of her horrible ride in the 3 metre tall Gold State Coach which weighs nearly four tonnes and has been used at every coronation since the one for George IV in It s not meant for travelling in at all, she says. And she reveals how she got stuck in Westminster Abbey under the weight of her coronation dress: I remember one moment when I was going against the pile of the carpet and I couldn t move at all. The programme makers, Atlantic Productions, say it s the first time a Monarch has spoken on camera about their experience of their coronation. But Buckingham Palace is not referring to the conversation as an "interview" even though the conversation with royal historian Alastair Bruce does contain some questions and her answers. The Queen has never given an official interview. Later this year, ITV will air a documentary in which the Queen speaks to fellow nonagenarian Sir David Attenborough. It seems that at the age of 91, the Queen is becoming more relaxed about having her conversations recorded for broadcast. Page 6 of 8
