MANCHESTER, England, July 20 (UPI) -- An elderly British woman was able to defend herself from an attempted robbery by using a package of bacon. Greater Manchester Police Trafford South reported that the 86-year-old woman was approached by an unidentified female in a grocery store after withdrawing a large amount of money from an ATM. "Whilst shopping, the lady was challenged by an unknown female who grabbed her trolley and demanded the money she had withdrawn," Police wrote. The elderly woman quickly looked to her surroundings for a defense by using a packet of bacon to fend off the would-be robber. "The 86 year old lady then defended herself by repeatedly hitting the female offender over the head with a packet of bacon," police wrote. "The offender then retreated and made off from the supermarket." Police told the BBC that the woman "was safe and well, but ultimately felt "shook up about the incident." 6 On the trail of the Hound of the Baskervilles by Jan Stevens There s always a story behind a really good story. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle s Hound of the Baskervilles, is a case in point. To summarize the plot briefly, Henry Baskerville inherits Baskerville Hall on Dartmoor and with it the curse of the Hound of the Baskervilles -- a gigantic black hellhound with glowing eyes that roams the moor when the powers of evil are exalted. Sherlock Holmes is called in to keep Sir Henry from becoming the hound s next victim. A British journalist, Bertram Fletcher Robinson, set Conan Doyle on the scent of this hair-raising, page-turning tale when they were returning from the Boer War aboard the S.S. Briton. The author offered Robinson 50 pounds for the idea, and Robinson helped him research the book once they arrived in England. The Hound of the Baskervilles was first published serially in The Strand magazine in More than a century later, Sherlockians can retrace Conan Doyle s footsteps on Dartmoor. Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes and Devon, published a few years ago by Brian W. Pugh, Paul R. Spiring and Sadru Bhanji, provides detailed information, photos and maps that will allow readers to drive to the places the author visited. But for those who don t want to deal with driving on the left, backing up a car on terrifyingly narrow country lanes, or dodging livestock, Alex Graeme of Unique Devon Tours offers a guided day trip First stop on his Hound of the Baskervilles adventure is Bertram Fletcher Robinson s former home on the outskirts of Ipplepen. Park Hill House still stands on the busy A381 highway, and Robinson is buried close by at St. Andrews Church, where the Rev. Robert Duins Cooke supplied key research material and locations for the story. Robinson and his coachman, one Harry Baskerville, helped Conan Doyle do his research. According to Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes and Devon, the route between Ipplepen and Princetown in those days passed through Hexworthy, Holne, Buckfastleigh, Ashburton and Denbury. The long hours Conan Doyle spent with Baskerville, plus the noble- sounding name of Baskerville, led the author to immortalize the coachman in prose. Buckfastleigh is the probable origin of Hugo Baskerville, the wicked ancestor responsible for the Baskerville curse. Squire Richard Cabell III supposedly sleeps in a sepulcher next to the ruins of Holy Trinity Church there (though it s possible it was Cabell s father or grandfather, since they all had the same name). Practitioners of black magic are said to perform rituals at the tomb. As Alex Graeme says, He was considered by locals to be a monstrously evil man, having apparently sold his soul to the Devil, and there is a tale that he murdered his wife, although this seems rather unlikely since she outlived him! Following his death, he was interred in the sepulchre, and it was on this night that a phantom pack of hounds came baying across the Moors to howl at his tomb. From that night onwards Squire Cabell could be found leading his pack of hounds across the Moors, usually on the anniversary of his death. Page 6 of 12

7 However, it s also possible local people demonized Cabell because he abandoned the Royalist side during the English civil war. This may have caused the avid hunter to be linked to the Wish or Yeth hounds affiliated with the Norse god Woden, who is sometimes called Wish. Wish hound sightings continue in England to this day, with Buckfastleigh and Wistman s Wood near Two Bridges the likeliest places to see them in Dartmoor. The squire lived at Brook Manor, west of Buckfastleigh, but Conan Doyle didn t use it as the model for Baskerville Hall. He did use the circular stone dwellings in the Grimspound Bronze Age settlement as inspiration for the fictional hamlet of Grimpen and Holmes s hiding place on the moor. Dartmoor Prison is mentioned in the story. Conan Doyle never visited it, but would have seen the huge correctional complex while staying at the Duchy Hotel in Princetown. The hotel is now the National Visitor Centre Princetown and includes exhibits related to the Hound of the Baskervilles. Southeast of Princetown, Fox Tor Mires, is the final stop on Graeme s tour. Considered the probable location of the fictional Grimpen Mire since it contains an abandoned tin mine, it is not shown on most maps of the area. The reason why could be the very thing discovered by Dr. Watson seemingly innocent bright green spots where a false step means death to man or beast. A moor pony is sucked down into one of these bog-holes in the story. If treacherous muck sounds like something you d prefer to skip, consider reading The Hound of the Baskervilles instead. Let Conan Doyle s characters take all the risks, and afterward relive the literary adventure with the Grimpen Admirers of Sherlock Holmes. Our San Diego-based group meets quarterly and welcomes devotees of the genius detective. For information, contact grimpenpostmistress@cox.net or visit the group s website at The tomb of Squire Richard Cabell stands next to the ruins of Holy Trinity Church in Buckfastleigh. A local legend says if you run around the tomb seven times and put your fingers through the iron window bars, either Cabell or the devil will bite your fingers.. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle visited the Grimspound Bronze Age settlement while researching Dartmoor for the Hound of the Baskervilles. Page 7 of 12

8 In the story, a moor pony meets his demise in the treacherous Grimpen Mire. This pair seems to be safe. The National Park Visitor Center, Princetown, has a Hound of the Baskervilles exhibit. Arthur Conan Doyle stayed in this building when it was the Duchy Hotel. Lonely Fox Tor Mires inspired Grimpen Mire, the perilous haunt of the Hound. A close-up of the dangerous mire terrain. 9 Bossons is the name given to an extraordinary collection of character wall masks, figurines, shelf ornaments, animal studies, wall plaques, lamp bases, bookends, wall clocks, thermometers, barometers, pottery figures and mirrors that were produced by the W. H. Bossons Company of Congleton, England between 1948 and The brainchild of a talented father and son team, they have become highly sought after works of art all around the world, but especially in the USA and England. Both William H Bossons and his son W. Ray Bossons studied pottery making in Stoke-on-Trent. When ill health forced Mr. Bossons Sr. to retire to Congleton in 1944, he started making lead soldiers and Christmas figurines out of metal and gypsum plaster as a hobby. Eventually, using a variety of technical skills including mold making, he decided to produce a range of wall plaques. His son, W. Ray Bossons was a talented artist and the two set up a business in 1946 at Brook Mills in Congleton. They trained half a dozen young ladies as paintresses, young men as molders and were soon making a set of high-relief pictorial wall plaques. These were illustrated in their first ever catalogue in under the title "Beautiful Britain Series". the first plaque created by Bossons was entitled "Village Scene" followed by "Little Moreton Hall", "Shakespeare's Birthplace" and "Ann Hathaway's Cottage". When W. H. Bossons Sr. died in 1951, Ray Bossons took over the company and in 1958 designed the first of the internationally recognized "Character Wall Masks". The first character was a 10" "Snake Charmer" followed by the "Mandolin Player", "Drummer", "Caspian Man" and "Caspian Woman". From the October 1999 issue of Collect It! The lifelike qualities of the figures were instantly appealing and such a huge success that the company spent the next 37 years accomodating demand for a range of products that paid infinite attention to variety and fine detail, It was an enormous achievement in an industry which was highly critical of plaster as a serious art form. Bossons produced over 300 different items-all hand made and hand painted The hanging methods for the plaques varied over the years. Generally the hollowed versions are older. In 1965, the first Fraser Art moulding machines were received at the company. The word Imagical was used in advertising and was copyright protected in The Bossons Company purchased the Freehold of the entire Brook Mills site in 1979 and in 1980 formed the International Bossons Collectors Society. Two books were published (1982 and 1994) entitled the magical world of Bossons. Suddenly, on Dec 6, 1996, the Bossons factory closed, despite many orders in process. Personal and business issues were cited among the reasons behind the decision to end production, as well as the need for renovation of the Victorian Mill operated from which they operated for 50 years. Page 9 of 12

10 Brook Mills in Congleton. In 1835, the seven story mill was used for power weaving of silk. W.H. and W.R. Bossons set up business in one part of the building in The 'Priesty Brook' ran alongside the factory. Employees crossed the brook to get to the Canteen from the Factory. In the early 1960's Bossons only used the Mill alongside the brook and the properties on the other side of the walkway. The main part of Brook Mills was then used by Halsteads who made shirts. In 1979, the Bosson Company bought the freehold for the entire site. The company closed suddenly in December In 2004 demolition began to convert the building into 53 Apartments, Offices, Restaurant and Bar with Parking and Landscaping. The Bossons signs remained on the derelict building until 2004 at which time they were donated to the Congleton Museum. 11 Theresa May becomes new British Prime Minister- July 2016 Before resigning, Cameron delivered remarks outside 10 Downing Street, saying, "It's not been an easy journey, and of course we've not got every decision right, but I do believe that today our country is much stronger." He wished May the best, especially as she negotiates the country's "Brexit" from the European Union. If he were granted one wish, he said, it would be the "continued success of this great country that I love so very much." Cameron will continue on as a member of Parliament. Theresa May is the new Conservative Party leader and second female prime minister, taking charge of the UK at one of the most turbulent times in recent political history. The 59-year-old home secretary's carefully cultivated image of political dependability and unflappability appears to have made her the right person at the right time as the fallout from the UK's vote to leave the EU smashed possible rivals out of contention. Before entering Downing Street, she made history by becoming the second longest serving home secretary in the past 100 years. The daughter of a Church of England vicar, Hubert, who died from injuries sustained in a car crash when she was only 25, Theresa May's middle class background has more in keeping with the last female occupant of Downing Street, Margaret Thatcher, than her immediate predecessor. Mrs May is the oldest leader to enter Downing Street since James Callaghan in 1976 and will be the first prime minister since Ted Heath who does not have children. P.M. May describes her husband, Philip, as her rock. On a lighter note! She's known as the Imelda Marcos of British politics with a shoe obsession that has seen her attend functions wearing everything from sparkling gold wellies to leopard print kitten heels. Twinwood Festival, August takes place at the RAF Twinwood Airfield and Twinwood Arena, near Bedford. Queen Mary- turned 80 maiden voyage in May 2016 (from "Today we come to the happy task of sending on her way the stateliest ship now in being. It has been the nation s will that she should be completed, and today we can send her forth no longer a number on the books, but a ship with a name in the world, alive with beauty, energy and strength! May her life among great waters spread friendship among the nations!" King George V on the Queen Mary launch The Queen Mary s creation and launch was nothing if not extraordinary and her story is rich with history, elegance and grandeur. From the time her construction began in 1930 in Clydebank, Scotland, the Queen Mary was destined to stand in a class all her own. Despite suffering economic setbacks during the Great Depression, which stalled construction on the ship for several years, Cunard Line spared no expense on building the Queen Mary which was originally known as job #534. Legend has it that the board of directors at Cunard had decided to name the ship the Queen Victoria, which would have been in keeping with the tradition of Cunard ships having the "ia" suffix (Mauretania, Aquitania and Berengeria). As per protocol, legend states that the Cunard directors went to ask King George his blessing of the ship's proposed name saying, "We have decided to name our new ship after England's greatest Queen," meaning Queen Victoria, the King's Grandmother. Upon which the King is reported to have stated, "My wife (Queen Mary) will be delighted that you are naming the ship after her." On May 27, 1936, the Queen Mary departed from Southampton, England embarking on her maiden voyage. She boasted five dining areas and lounges, two cocktail bars and swimming pools, a grand ballroom, a squash court and even a small hospital. The Queen Mary had set a new benchmark in transatlantic travel, which the rich and famous considered as the only civilized way to travel. She quickly seized the hearts and imaginations of the public on both sides of the Atlantic, representing the spirit of an era known for its elegance, class and style. For three years after her maiden voyage, the Queen Mary was the grandest ocean liner in the world carrying Hollywood celebrities like Bob Hope and Clark Gable, royalty like the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and dignitaries like Winston Churchill. During this time she even set a new speed record, which she held for 14 years. But when the Queen Mary docked in New York in September 1939 that would be the last time she would carry civilian passengers for many years. As World War II started, the Queen Mary's transformation into a troopship had begun. She was painted a camouflaged grey color and stripped of her luxurious amenities. Dubbed the "Grey Ghost" because of her stealth and stark color, the Queen Mary was the largest and fastest troopship to sail, capable of transporting as many as 16,000 troops at 30 knots. After the end of WWII, the Queen Mary began a 10-month retrofitting process, which would return the ship to her original glory. On July 21, 1947, the Queen Mary resumed regular passenger service across the Atlantic Ocean, and continued to do so for nearly two more decades. The increasing popularity of air travel helped signal the end of an era for the Queen Mary. By 1965 the entire Cunard fleet was operating at a loss and they decided to retire and sell the legendary Queen Mary. On October 31, 1967, the Queen Mary departed on her final cruise, arriving in Long Beach, California, on December 9, She has called Southern California her home ever since. The Queen Mary is now a floating Hotel, Attraction and Event & Wedding Venue, home to three world-class restaurants and an icon in Southern California. Page 12 of 12
