FUN TIMES IN PENSACOLA (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1) Pensacola. We went on a two hour plus tour, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed our knowledgeable and enthusiastic tour guide, a retired P-3 Orion pilot. He explained that what sets this museum apart from the rest was that it was a hands-on museum, and that you were encouraged to touch, making for a more meaningful experience. There is so much to see and most agreed that they would need to make a return visit. Some people managed to fit in a trip to the gulf shore, to walk on the beautiful white sand beach and marvel at the emerald green water. Downtown Pensacola with the alfresco dining area with Airstream food trucks was enjoyed by an appreciative crowd, and we realized that there is more to do and see than we had time for, and so again, we just need to come back! Kayaking and fishing was enjoyed by some as the river is a short stroll from the campground. An art class attended by a group of about ten creative spirits resulted in some fine looking chalk pastel landscapes and seascapes. And then there was an afterdinner hula contest! Let s just say what happens in Mystic Springs stays in Mystic Springs. Lots of laughs there. On Sunday morning some of us joined the Mystic Springs group for a continental breakfast and a devotional time, with hymn singing, organ music, and bagpipes. It was a wonderful way to end the time we shared with new friends. -Mary Anne Swegles TASTE OF THE BLUE RIDGE The Taste of the Blue Ridge National Caravan led by Kathy & Gene Blanchard started in June in Cherokee, NC and continued for 21 days along the length of The Blue Ridge Parkway to Staunton, VA. We traveled with 37 Airstreamers in 20 rigs including 2 Interstates, 2 motor homes, 16 trailers ranging from 20' to 31', nine dogs and two cats. We camped at six spots along the Parkway and had lots of time to explore the many overlooks, visitor centers and museums along the way. Some of the highlights include visits to a re-created Cherokee village where we were invited to dance with the docents, Biltmore Estates where the opulence of the buildings was only exceeded by the beauty of the surroundings. FL Airstream Club Members Jeanette & Walt Deptula, a Pioneer, Alden & Daria Tansey, and Betty & Dave Wenger on the Blue Ridge Caravan We visited Hickory Ridge Homestead in Boone, NC where we learned about life as a hunter like Daniel Boone (they were called long hunters because they were away for a long time and many used long muskets). The docent demonstrated the musket he uses today to hunt bear. We also listened to mountain PAGE 4

music in Galax, VA went to the D-Day Memorial in Bedford, VA and spent a wonderful day at Thomas Jefferson s Monticello in Charlottesville, VA. The three weeks sped by with lots of good weather, good food, and good companionship along the way. If you love trees and beautiful vistas, you will love the Blue Ridge Caravan. -Daria Tansey Galax, VA D-Day Memorial Biltmore Estates Monticello Rolland Christians, who recently rejoined the Florida Airstream Club, wrote to tell us about his sentimental Airstream trip. I'm up in Boston right now [June 7]. Am staying at Wompatuck campground in Hingham, Ma. As you know, my wife Nancy passed away two months ago. I loaded all of her personal belongings and family things in the Airstream. Our grand daughter, Jen, came out to the campground with a rented box truck, and we brought everything in to her house in Boston. This is unloading the last of it at her house after the rain subsided. It was almost full. You can pack a lot of stuff in a 31' Airstream! This was Nancy s last trip in the Airstream, as her ashes rode in the upper compartment! The final memorial, funeral mass, funeral, and graveside services went well on Saturday, June 10. Nancy is buried in her family plot alongside her son, who died twenty years ago, and her daughter who died two years ago. A perfect day to be alone in this beautiful campground and reflect! PAGE 5

COMMUNITY FUND RAISING UPDATE The Florida Airstream Club has chosen the Fisher House as our 2017 Fund Raising Project. A Fisher House is a home away from home for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers. The homes are normally located within walking distance of the treatment facility or have transportation available. There are 72 Fisher Houses located on 24 military installations, and 29 VA medical centers. Many more houses are under construction or in design. Families do not pay to stay at a Fisher House. Fees at Army, Navy and Air Force Fisher Houses are underwritten by the Fisher House Foundation. Our club has been busy raising funds for the Fisher House. With activities such as 50/50 drawings at rallies, RV Stickers, customized hand towels, dish towels and pillows made by Lynn Behnke, Joker sets made by Jeff Krabel, and flea market donations we have raised $ Thank you to everyone who has supported this project. We are hoping to increase this total over the next few months. Do you have a fund raining idea? Let us know your idea so we can help you get it going. Additionally, the remaining balance collected of $ raised for the Wounded Warrior Project in 2016 will be sent to Wounded Warrior Headquarters under our club s name. -Chris Allen THE FLORIDA AIRSTREAM CLUB EXECUTIVE BOARD AND COMMITTEE CHAIR NOMINEES FOR 2018 ARE: President: J Ron Allen 1st Vice President: Lynn Behnke 2nd Vice President: Steve Oppel Recording Secretary: Chris Allen Treasurer: Brad McGloin Corresponding Secretary: Joan Carson One-year Trustee: Gerald Reed Two-year Trustee: Mike Swegles Immediate Past President: Jeff Krabel Membership Chairman: Frank Carson Legislative Chairman: Frank Carson Newsletter Editor: Mary Anne Swegles Web Master: Janet McGloin Sunshine Committee: Betty Wenger Historian: Jeff Krabel PAGE 6

2018 RALLY SCHEDULE Attention Florida Airstream Club Members. We are in the process of setting up our 2018 Rally Schedule. We are looking for some volunteers who would like to share their favorite campground with their fellow club members by hosting a rally next year. Our club is only as good as the people in it. I believe we have a great club full of wonderful people that like to have fun in the great outdoors. For those who are apprehensive about hosting a rally, don t give it a thought. We have plenty of members who have put on rallies in the past that are willing to help others put one on too. We also have a basic checklist to help get you started. Most importantly, when you volunteer to host a rally, select a date that works best with your calendar. The hosts are the go to folks for the attendees and the campground. The hosts help ensures a smooth running rally, but they don t do all the work. Other members are willing to step-up and host a dinner, activity, tour, etc. and are just waiting to be asked. To date we have the following rallies penciled in on our 2018 Rally Schedule. There are no rules that say we can t have more than one rally per month, so don t let that stop you from hosting. As in the past, we will present the Rally Schedule for approval at our October Members meeting. Month Dates Location Activity Hosts January February TBA Mt. Dora, FL Club Rally Jeff & Mary Krabel March TBA Ft. Christmas, FL Bluegrass Volunteer Rally Frank & Joan Carson April TBA TBA 6-Night Canoe/Kayak Caravan Ron & Chris Allen April Myrtle Beach, SC Region 3 Rally Region Officers May TBA TBA Joint Rally with Vintage Airstream Club Larry & Linda Scovotto June July Salem, OR International Rally International Officers August September Great Outdoors; Titusville, FL Club Rally Curtis & Rachel Hargett October TBA Club Rally and Annual Meeting Ron & Chris Allen November December 11/28 12/3 Ft. Christmas, FL Cracker Christmas Volunteer Rally Frank & Joan Carson A special thank you to everyone who hosted a rally this past year. Our club appreciates your willingness to volunteer and show members how we have fun camping. Please send all your rally dates, location, etc. to Ron Allen ( ronchrisallen@bellsouth.net, phone: ) by October 1, We will need this information compiled for our Annual Meeting and to submit to be published in the Blue Beret to help everyone plan their travels for next year. -Ron Allen PAGE 7

SUNSHINE LIST Frank Carson had the tumors in his throat removed and all were benign, but Frank is now in the hospital for a badly dislocated shoulder. It will have to be surgically repaired. Past Florida Airstream Club President, Larry Moser, was in an auto accident, totaled the car and walked away with only a banged up arm. We have members who are ill, on chemotherapy, undergoing radiation treatments, awaiting medical procedures, and all trying hard to recover. Keep them in your prayers, and everyone travel safe, enjoy the good life, and stay healthy in the days ahead. There were no other cares and concerns reported to your editor for this edition. Please let our Sunshine Committee Chair, Joan Carson (321) or fc23343@aol.com, know of anything that you would like to be to be printed here.
