5 . CONGRATULATONS! You have accepted leadership for a Philmont expedition. Your leadership is a key factor in the planning and - successful execution of your crew's trek. You and your crew leader, together as a team, have many tasks to accomplish th ultimely will provide a life-changing experience to the youth members you are bringing to Philmont. Earlier you received the PHLMONT 1999 COUNCL AND UNT PLANNNG GUDE. Hopefully. your group has reviewed it carefully, as it contains important informion about requirements for leadership and participion, youth protect~on, health and medical standards, crew size, fee payment policy, risks associed with high adventure, and a complete month by month planning guide. Coed groups must be Venturing Crews with both male and female leadership. All leaders must be registered with the Boy Scouts of America. This packet of informion, which is your final mailing, along with the Philmont 1999 Council and Unit Planning Guide received previously and the medical mailing you received in December should provide your group with all the informion necessary to "Be Prepared" for a gre trek. The PEAKS booklet is designed to help with last minute arrangements for your trip, as well as a planning tool in selecting an itinerary th is mched to the crew's level of ability and program desires. The careful review of the PEAKS, Guidebook to Adventure, and the Philmont map will guarantee a real "mountain-top" adventure. The Guidebook to Adventure describes helpful training for your Philmont expedition. The success of your expedition depends upon the thoroughness of your training and the teamwork developed by your crew. An established training program is strongly recommended. Select a hilly area for your training. Start with a short hike and a light pack. ncrease the mileage and your pack weight as your training progresses. t is important to hike often enough while carrying a pack and wearing the boots which you will use Philmont to toughen your feet and to break in your boots. Backpacking is the best way to prepare for a Philmont Trek. t is highly recommended th everyone fulfill the requirements for Backpacking Merit Badge. These include three 15 mile treks with two overnights each and one 5 day backpacking trek covering least 30 miles. Fulfilling these requirements will enable you to enjoy a Philmont trek. The Venture backpacking pamphlet also has excellent tips on preparing for a Philmont trek. Be Prepared! ORGANZE YOUR CREW - ',. A well qualified Scout or Venturer should be selected as crew leader before training begins. The crew leader is a key person for a successful Philmont expedition and the advisor must work closely with this person. The advisor is responsible for : arranging transportion, overnight stops and meals en route to and from Philmont. a ensuring the safety and well being of everyone in the crew. addressing crew conflicts th may require discipline. serving as a counselor and coach and giving approprie guidance to the crew leader. 6 The crew leader provides leadership for: a a a a making itinerary selections based upon the desires of the crew. choosing routes during the trek based upon the capability of the crew. setting up and breaking camp. establishing a duty roster. seeing th "smellables" are properly stored and other precautions are followed to avotd encounters with bears and other wildlife. ensuring the Philmont Wilderness Pledge is upheld and th every campsite and fire pit is left clean. f a crew member has earned a religious award in Scouting, consider asking th person to serve as chaplain's ' - aide. A kit of worship resources will be provided for use along the trail. ROLES OF THE RANGER, ADVSOR AND CREW LEADER As an adult advisor, your role is to counsel your crew leader and crew. f it becomes necessary, you should be prepared to discipline a crew member, without verbal or physical abuse. With the advice of your Ranger, you are responsible for ensuring the safety and well being of each crew member. nsofar as possible, let the crew leader lead the crew. The more capable the crew leader, the more you should remain in the background, giving support only when needed. The crew leader is responsible for organizing the crew. assigning duties and making decisions. deally, the crew leader discusses ideas and alternives with the entire crew to hear everyone and arrive a consensus before taking action. The Ranger assigned to serve as a resource for your crew may be either male or female. You and your crew are. expected to tre the Ranger with respect whever the Ranger's gender may be. Philmont and the Boy Scouts of America prohibit language or behavior th belittles or puts down members of the opposite sex, unwelcome advances, racial slurs, chastisement for religious or other beliefs or any other actions or comments th are derogory of people. We need to lift people up for the good things they do and refrain from putting them down for mistakes or poor judgemen!.-tjer-anger serves as a teacher and. a.- resource, for your crew and helps to coach the crew leader as well as the entire crew. A Philmont expedition is a superactivity requiring careful planning and preparion. Numerous mters need your tention before departing for Philmont. The key ones are listed below. TNERARY SELECTON AND RESERVATONS Please submit your crew's five different itinerary choices on the postcard inside the front cover of this book as soon as possible, but not ler than MAY 1. Procedures for selecting and reserving your itinerary are outlined in the itinerary section of this book. tinerary selections fill quickly; your chances of being assigned an itinerary your crew desires are enhanced by making five different choices th reflect your crew's program desires. HEALTH AND MEDCAL RECORD Every camper and advisor is required to have a medial evaluion within the past twelve (12) months by your -. family doctor. The Philmont Scout Ranch Health and Medical Record should be used. Each person is also required to have a tetanus shot or booster within ten years. f these services must be performed Philmont, you will be charged-accordin& Advisors should review each participant's medical form to be familiar with any health restrictions. Advisors should collect and hold the forms and turn them in to the Health Lodge upon arrival P hilmont. PEAKS PHLMONT SCOUT RANCH, BSA

7 Each participant in a Philmont trek must not exceed the maximum acceptable limit in the weight for height chart shown below. The right hand column shows the maximum acceptable weight for a person's height in order to participe in a Philmont trek. Those who fall within the limits are more likely to have an enjoyable trek and avoid incurring health risks. Every Philmont trek involves hiking with a b. backpack between 6,500 and 12,500 ft. elevions. Philmont recommends th participants carry a pack weighing no more than 2530% of their body weight. Participants 21 years and older who exceed the maximum acceptable weight limit for their height the Philmont medical recheck, will not be permitted to backpack or hike in Philmont. For example, a person 5'10" cannot weigh more than 226 bs. *The Philmont physicians will use their best professional judgment in determining participion in a Philmont trek by individuals under 21 years of age who exceed the maximum acceptable weight for height. Participants under 21 years of age are strongly encouraged to meet the weight limit for their height, and exceptions are not made automically. Discussion in advance with Philmont regarding any exception to the weight limit for persons under 21 years of age is required. The maximum acceptable weight for individuals of any age 6' 7" or taller is 295 bs. This limit is necessary due to limitions of rescue equipment and for the safety of Philmont personnel. The maximum weight for any participant in a Cavalcade Trek and for horserides is 200 bs. HEGHT 5'0" 5'1" 5'2" RECOMMENDED WEGHT MAXMUM ACCEPTANCE This table is based on the revised Dietary Guidelines for Americans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services. These heightlweight guidelines were approved by Philmont in PEAKS PHLMONT SCOUT RANCH. BSA

8 FRST AD AND CPR CERTFCATON Philmont requires th least one person, preferably two, (either an advisor or a youth participant) in each crew be currently certified in American Red Cross Standard First Aid or the equivalent" and CPR from the American Heart Associion, the American Red Cross or the equivalent. Several hours may be required for Philmont staff to reach a remote backcountry locion after a message is delivered to the nearest staffed camp. First aid and CPR training will result in proper and prompt tention bemg given to injuries andlor illnesses. You must present current certificion cards upon check in to verify this requirement.. "Equivalent training can include instruction by ambulance or fire department personnel, community colleges or other organizions. You must have a letter indicing length of training, topics covered and participant roster. ACCDENT AND SCKNESS NSURANCE Campers and advisors are covered while Philmont. and while traveling to and from, by a plan through Mutual of Omaha lnsurance Company. For each sickness or injury, benefits in the aggrege of up to $7, are payable for medical or surgical trement, prescription drugs, hospitalizion or the exclusive services of a prive duty nurse (RN or LPN). Benefits will be paid for expenses incurred (subject to the Non-duplicion Provision below) up to the usual, reasonable charges normally made within the geographic area where trement is performed. Non-duplicion Provision - When surgical habnent or hospital care is involved, benefits in excess of the first $ will be payable only for the expense shown in the Mutual of Omaha Campers' Accident and Sickness nsurance booklet, which are not receivable under any other insurance policy or service contract. f no other collectible insurance is available this excess provision will not apply. Advisors are urged to inform parents of the informion in the Mutual of Omaha Campers' Accident and Sickness lnsurance booklet. Also, remind parents to include the company name and policy number of their family insurance policy on the camper medical form. BACKPACKNG STOVES Philmont encourages the use of backpacking stoves. They will be helpful to you throughout your trek, particularly on wet mornings when you want to start cooking and hiking early to avoid warm afternoon temperures. Plan to bring your own backpacking stove or purchase a Coleman Peak stove Philmont. A rio of one backpacking stove per four campers is recommended. The proper use of stoves should be part of your pre- Philmont training (see Philmont Guidebook to Adventure). Philrnont strongly recommends, and most airlines require, th crews transport their stoves without fuel. Grou~s m e transwrted. f not, purged stoves/fuel bottles must be shipped to Philmont by first class or parcel post (U.S. Postal Service) or UPS (United Parcel Service). UPS has specific packaging and shipping procedures which must be followed, and will assess special handling fees in addition to regular res. Groups must include Expedition number on shipping label and allow ample time for shipment to arrive Philmont. At the conclusion of your -* Expedition, purged stoveslfuel bottles will need to be shipped from Philmont by parcel post Stovedfuel bottles must be purged of fuel for shipping or when transported. This can be accomplished by draining* all fuel and leaving the tanklbottle uncapped for several hours. - PEAKS PHLMONT SCOUT RANCH, BSA

9 Fuel may be purchased (commercial antemjstove fuel) Philmont Trading Posts loced Camping Headquarters, Phillips Junction, Ute Gulch, Baldy Camp and Ponil. Fuel will also be available Rich Cabins. Philmont cannot transport personal or special fuel to crews. All liquid fuel containers should be spun aluminum or hard plastic bottles designed to carry fuel. A small pour spout or funnel is important to avoid dangerous spillage. Backpacking stoves are used with adult supervision and never in or near tents. CREW ROSTER nformion on this roster is vital to Philmont's Logistics Services in case of an emergency, and to the Postmaster for sorting your mail. Please clearly print or type all sections of the roster and indice your complete expedition number, TOUR PERMT A Nional Tour Permit Applicion, Form No. 4419, is included in your Advisor's Kit. Complete this form and follow the instructions for transmitting it for approval. When approved, carry the certifice with you throughout your trip. t is required by the Philmont Camping Registrar to complete registrion upon arrival Philmont. Refer to Tours and Expeditions, No. 3734, for helpful informion on trip planning. t is available through your local Scout service center. MAL ARRVAL PLANS & CREW NFORMATON Use the postcard inside the front cover of this book to indice your arrival plans Philmont. t should be sent least one month before your departure. Your arrival time Philmont along with the number of crews in your group are important pieces informion. f your group will arrive Philmont in the morning, you may e lunch in the Philmont Dining Hall. f your group arrives after 12:00 noon, supper will be your first meal in the Dining Hall. The Trading Post Snack Bar is available reasonable prices for a group th fails to arrive in time for a meal in the Dining Hall. f any of the informion changes after you mail your Arrival Plans Card, please notify Philmont. TRANSPORTATON Arrival Plans and Crew nformion card must be mailed least 30 days prior to your arrival Philmont. Traveling to and from Philmont is an important part of the "High Adventure" experience. Most contingents will find transportion the largest expense in the budget. Study the various travel options before making a final decision. Choose the one th has the greest appeal and is affordable. Philmont Expeditions in the past have found public carriers to be reliable forms of transportion to the ranch. - Consult the passenger department of any of the following carriers for scheduling informion and costs. Your local travel agency can also provide this service. *..:. Philmont does not endorse any agency or vendor listed in this publicion, but provides this informion to assist groups in making travel and lodging arrangements. TOUR DRECTOR Contingents may want to supplement their adult leadership with a tour director who has the following responsibilities: (1) This person is a Scouter who has the responsibility for the transportion of the contingent to and from Philrnont, and is the liaison between the contingent and Philmont. - r (2) The tour director handles all fiscal arrangements en route to and Philmont. 11 (3) Preferably this person should be physically fit, capable of and willing to assume leadership of a crew on the trail in the event an advisor becomes incapacited. deally, when the contingent hits the trail, the tour director accompanies one of the crews as an additional advisor. (4) Facilities are provided Camping Headquarters for tour directors or advisors who become incapacited or otherwise cannot make the trail. These are limited, however, (no facilities are provided for families) and opportunities for vehicular travel to visit camps are very limited. '. (5) Tour directors are top Philmont promoters in local councils. BUS DRVER ACCOMMODATONS Bus drivers may wish to: (1 ) Stay in Cimarron the Cimarron nn - Trailer and Camper Park ( ), the St. James HotelMotel ( ) or the Kit Carson Travelodge ( ). Prior reservions are recommended. (2) Go with you on your expedition. n this case your driver will need to have a medical examinion, meet all physical requirements and all adult requirements. FAMLY ACCOMMODATONS Philmont does not have facilities to accommode family members of advisors or youth members who are participing in the camping programs. Several motels and trailer parks in Cimarron are available for those interested. Prior reservions are recommended. TRAVEL ETQUETTE A few "rules of the road" for you and your crew to remember as you travel to and from Philrnont: Wear your Scout or Venturer uniform proudly! You are members of the Boy Scouts of America, a highly regarded youth organizion. A Scout or Venturer properly uniformed, sharp appearing, courteous and well mannered is the best medium for public relions. Use the buddy system - no one person ever leaves the group alone. Telephone ahead to your next day's stopping place. t is inconsidere to drop in or cancel without adeque notificion. Do not use tobacco in public. t may be offensive to those around you. Express appreciion to those who extend courtesies to you along the way. - ti - -- EXPEDTON NUMBER Your expedition number is assigned by Philmont. t is determined by your expected arrival de. f your contingent is to arrive July 14, your expedition number will be 714, which signifies 7th month and 14th day. A letter assigned by Philmont distinguishes different contingents (for example, 714-A, 714-0, 714-C, etc.). f your contingent consists of several crews, you will need to assign a number after the letter to designe each one. 12 PHLMONT ADDRESS AND MAL Your complete expedition number is essential for mail delivery Philmont. ncoming mail may be picked up only by the expedition advisor the Philmont Post Office when your crew arrives and when you return to Camping Headquarters from the trail. You may send mail from any staffed camp. PHLMONT ADDRESS: Your Name Expedition Number Philmont Scout Ranch Cimarron, NM EMERGENCY TELEPHONE NUMBER AT PHLMONT Telephone calls to you should be restricted to extreme emergencies only. Since Philmont comprises 215 square miles of rugged mountain wilderness, it can require several hours to transport you from some camps to return.an emergency phone call. n those cases, it will speed contact when the caller has your full name and expedition number. 24 HOUR EMERGENCY NUMBER PHLMONT MUSEUMS The Kit Carson Museum and Philmont Museum and Seton Memorial Library may be visited any day. Tours of the Villa Philmonte must be arranged the Philmont Museum. No fee is charged any of these museums. Daily bus service will be available to visit the Kit Carson Museum Rayado. There is no fee for bus service and can be scheduled in Logistics soon after your group arrives Philmont. PROCESSNG AT CAMPNG HEADQUARTERS A Ranger wrll be ass~gned to your crew for the initial processing through Camping Headquarters and will guide you through-the s&ps outlined in your Guidebook to Adventure. You will save time by carrying all Philmont merial with you and by alphabetizing your medical forms and crew roster. Plan to tend the advisor's oriention meeting from 4: pm. Chapel services are conducted each evening 7:00 p.m. Cholic, Jewish, Mormon, Protestant). The Trading Post and other headquarters operions are closed so as not to conflict with religious services. ON THE TRAL AT PHLMONT You are responsible for all campers in your crew and for seeing th everyone hikes together as a crew. A - Philmont trek is a team effort with everyone working together and encouraging each other. A crew with an enthusiastic spirit can do far more than it ever dreamed possible. Keep you crew's morale high. PRESERVNG THE PHLMONT WLDERNESS Philmont is a magnificent wilderness camping area with an immense network of trails and camps linked by roads - - designed for service and protection of both campers and land. n over sixty years of operion, more than 650,000 young people have enjoyed the gre scenic beauty of Philmont's mountain terrain and experienced the unique and memorable programs of its staffed camps. A few inconsidere participants, employing improper camping methods, can mar this magnificent land. Consequently, Philmont asks all campers and their advisors to recommit themselves to good Scout camping and genuine wilderness understanding. Each camper and advisor will be PEAKS PHLMONT SCOUT RANCH, BSA

13 asked to sign the PHLMONT WLDERNESS PLEDGE which declares th they will do everything possible to preserve the beauv and wonder of the Philmont wilderness mosphere and its facilities through good Scout camping. t is expected th Philmont campers will carry this pledge to all camping areas th they might visit throughout America. The major areas of emphasis involved in the PHLMONT WLDERNESS PLEDGE are: LTTER and GRAFFT - Each camper should make sure th all trails and campsites are left ne and clean. Camping Headquarters should be left in a like manner. WLDLFE - Respect Philmont's wildlife, including livestock. Follow all guidelines regarding food handling and trash disposal. Never feed or harass wild animals. WATER - You are in a land where wer is scarce and very precious. Conservion and wise use of wer has been practiced since the first man entered this land. You must continue this proper use. You should never bhe, do laundry or dishes in or near springs or streams. Everyone needs wer, and you should always leave springs and streams as clean as you found them. TRALS - Pledge yourself to respect all trails of Philrnont. Do not cut green boughs or trees or mark on them. Do not cut across switchbacks and do not alter or change trail signs, CAMPSTES - Camp only in sites designed with a numbered wood block sign. Each crew is responsible for leaving a ne and orderly campsite, whether it be in Camping Headquarters, staffed camps or non-staffed camps. Your campsite must be left litter free with its lrine and sumps clean. Carry out all trash. Fires must be left DEAD OUT and then cleaned of debris before you depart. Leave a courtesy woodpile when possible. You should respect the feelings of those crews camping near you and those th will come after you. Low impact camping and hiking is the desire of everyone who enjoys the outdoors. Philmont serves about 18,500 Scouts and their advisors each year. Nevertheless, it is not the wear of so many pairs of boots th mars Philmont, it is the carelessness of inconsidere campers. t is our sincere hope th through your commitment to the PHLMONT WLDERNESS PLEDGE, Philrnont and all other areas will always remain beautiful, clean and nural in order to enjoy outdoor adventure. We ask your dedicion to the fulfillment of this goal. CONSERVATON Most conservion projects Philrnont consist of trail construction or repair. WHEN SELECTNG YOUR TNERARY - USE ONLY THE 1999 PEAKS BOOK! PREVOUS COPES ARE NVALD! You witl need three basic tools: (1) a Philmont map, (2) a Guidebook to Adventure and (3) this 1999 PEAKS book. Bring the crew together and explain th the objective is to select five top choices of itineraries from the twentyeight. Every crew is expected to make its selection from the itineraries in this book. Several methods may be used to determine your crew's choices of itineraries: (1) One method is to have each crew member vote for the five best liked program feures after studying the program list which follows the itineraries in this book. Tally the votes for each program; using the program itinerary chart, you can determine which itinerary includes most of your desires. (2) Another method is to ask each crew member to study all itineraries and to make five choices. When all crew members have made their selections, the individual choices can be assembled, weighed and the top five determined. (3) Devise your own method for making selections. Please note th although all available program feures are indiced on the enclosed itineraries, your crew is not - ' required to participe in each and every one. Some may not interest you and others may require waiting to participe. Also, several programs must be scheduled by an tinerary Planner when you visit Logistics - - Philmont. 15 DFFCULTY OF TNERARES Each itinerary is red and the degree of difficulty is determined by mileage, ruggedness of terrain and the number of layovers. Follow the itineraries on the enclosed map. The brown contour lines represent 80 foot elevion changes; the more lines you cross on an upward route, the tougher the climb. Steep downhill trails are often tough, too. * Sectional maps (1/24000 scale) are the North, Central and South sections of Philmont and the Valle Viddl and are available through the Philmont Trading Post a cost of $5.00 (subject to change). These maps represent contour intervals of either 20 or 40 feet. Mileage figures on itineraries are approxime. All itineraries may be used to qualify for distance requirements of the Fifty-Miler Award. Please carefully consider the abilities of each crew member when making your itinerary selections. A "Typical" itinerary allows considerable time to enjoy program feures. However, even a typical itinerary requires considerable exertion because Philmont elevions vary from 6,500 to 12,441 feet with many long, difficult trails covering rugged and rocky terrain. A typical itinerary can be made more challenging by taking side hikes and it provides maximum opportunity to participe in backcountry programs. A "Rugged" itinerary provides a variety of program opportunities. These itineraries are designed to meet the needs and desires of most crews. The vast majority of crews choose a "Typical" or "Rugged" itinerary. A "Strenuous" itinerary should be tempted only by an older crew th enjoys lots of rugged mountain hiking and is in good physical condition. Smaller crews of chartered units are recommended for these treks. Strenuous and super strenuous itineraries are recommended for crews whose advisors and some crew members have previously taken a Philrnont trek. A "Super Strenuous" itinerary is the most difficult. The super strenuous itineraries are highlighted by climbing many of Philmont's highest peaks. They are recommended only for experienced crews with seasoned bachpackers who are least 15 years of age and should not be tempted unless in top physical condition and capable of hiking gre distances high elevions. A regular program of physical conditioning for several months prior to your arrival is imperive. Program time is limited since much of each day is spent hiking. All itineraries are tough - the difference is in the degree of toughness. Good physical condition is considered a prerequisite for all Philmont treks. PHlLMONT TNERARY NUMBER "A" & "B" itineraries are exactly alike. They allow two crews from the same contingent to follow the same itinerary throughout their trek, although they are to hike independently on the trail consistent with the low impact camping ethics of the Boy Scouts of America. f two crews wish to use the same itinerary, send the itinerary choice cards to Philrnont together and indice this desire on the cards. Crews of more than 12 persons are requested to divide into smaller, more manageable crews. Take care in making your choice. The decisions will be tough because every itinerary is GREAT! The sketch maps and graphs accompanying each itinerary are designed to show the area and terrain covered on each. The. graphs depict approxime elevion changes; the more up and down distance shown on each graph, the more challenging the trek will be. This itinerary book is designed to let you compare different graphs by placing the ends of the pages so th the graphs appear side by side. 16 VALLE VlDAL TNERARES Several itineraries offer an opportunity to trek into the Valle Vidal Unit of Carson Nional Forest which has a common border with Philmont in the vicinity of Dan Beard Camp or Rich Cabins Camp. Philmont has agreed th crews trekking in the Valle Vidal will use no trace camping techniques. Each crew th chooses one of these itineraries will receive special training in "No Trace" camping techniques and backcountry navigion. A crew th plans to trek into the Valle Vidal must bring backpacking stoves and be knowledgeable of their use. The Valle Vidal offers an opportunity to backpack through brehtaking scenery and a chance to see lots of wildlife including elk, beaver, and raptors. The Vaile Vidal itineraries are designed for crews with older youth andlor experienced Philmont backpackers. There are several opportunities for cross-country travel th are challenging. Lrines, bear cables, fire rings and other facilities are not provided in the Valle Vidal. The scenery and opportunities to see wildlife are marvelous for crews th are adequely prepared. Each crew th receives one of the Valle Vidal itineraries will receive a Valle Vidal map of the area. Additional, maps may be purchased from the Philmont Trading Post a cost of $5.00 each (price subject to change) plus postage. i i Philmont has established four temporary staffed camps in the Valle Wal. The US Forest Service has graciously allowed Philrnont to establish staffed camps Whiternan Vega. Ring Place and Sea$ Canyon. The Rich Cabins and vicinity has been leased from the WS Ranch, which is prively owned. Each crew trekking into these areas is expected to demonstre a sense of stewardship for public and prive lands. After climbing Baldy Mountain you will proceed south to hike some of Philmont's other major peaks including Mount Phillips, Big Red, Black Mountain and the Tooth of Time. Much time will be spent hiking and enjoying the remote wilderness, but you may have time to participe in burro packing, mountain man rendezvous, black powder rifle, Continental Tie & Lumber Company, backwoods technology and astronomy, western lore and gold mining and panning. This super strenuous trek will challenge even the most seasoned backpacker. Suggested for experienced crews only.
