ADVSOR'S GUDEBOOK CONGRATULATONS For having accepted leadership of a Philmont expedition. This reflects great credit upon you and your leadership ability. You also have assumed a great responsibility. Parents are entrusting their youth to your care. The Boy Scouts of America are placing their faith and confidence in your leadership. Most important the young people in your crew are depending on you to realize their hopes, aspirations and dreams of Philmont. Philmont is as much a mental challenge as a physical challenge and you can set the pattern for success. YOUR RESPONSBLTES ARE TO (1) Complete recruiting Scouts and Explorers who are at least 13 years of age by January 1 of the year attending. Everyone must be prepared mentally and physically for a Philmont High Adventure experience. (2) Organize your expedition. (3) See that the crew elects a youth leader to prepare for a High Adventure experience at Philmont. CAMPER - ADVSOR REQUREMENTS To assist you in planning for your Philmont expedition and in keeping with the policies of the Boy Scouts of America, rules for participation are the same for everyone without regard to race, color, national origin, age, sex or handicap. The majority of members in every crew must be youth. There are three ways Scouts or Explorers may participate in a Philmont expedition. (1) As members of a chartered unit - a Scout Troop, Varsity Team, or Venture Crew with two deep leadership (one of whom must be 21 years of age or older, the second must be at least 18 years of age), - an Explorer Post, Venture Crew or Varsity Team (may be coed, but if so, must have male and female adult advisors - preferably a husband/wife team, both must be age 21 or older). (2) As members of a council continuent or district continsent with proper leadership. (3) AsindividualsinthePhilmontMountainMen/Women, RayadoMen/WomenorTrailCrew programs. EXCEPTONS TO THESE REQUREMENTS CANNOT BE MADE. The Boy Scouts of America requires that at least two adult advisors accompany each crew of 7 to 12 total people. One advisor must be 21 years of age or older; the other must be at least 18 years of age by the time the crew leaves home. Coed crews have special requirements - see above. Three ways to meet the two deep adult leadership requirements: (1) Recruit additional leadership. (21 Organize larger crews of up to 12 people, including adult advisors, to reduce the number of advisors needed. (3) Two crews with one adult advisor each may submit identical itinerary choices. These crews are expected to hike independently on the trail but must stay in adjacent campsites each night. This will reduce the chances of receiving a top choice of itineraries.

BSA POLCY ON FEMALES N CAMP AND TROOP LEADERSHP ~t least one adult female and at least one adult male must accompany each coed crew. There are no gender restrictions for adult leadership at Philmont, but in all crews the two deep leadership rule applies to all crews. All leaders are expected to reflect high moral standards established by custom, traditional values and religious teaching. Male and female leaders are required to have separate sleeping facilities. Married couples may share the same quarters if appropriate facilities are available. Male and female youth participants will not share the same sleeping facility. When staying in tents, no youth will stay in the tent of an adult other than his or her parent or guardian. f housing other than tents is used, separate facilities must be provided for male and female participants. Adult male leaders must be responsible forthe male participants. Adult females must be responsible for the female participants. Adult leaders need to respect the privacy of youth members in situations such as changing into swimsuits or taking showers, and intrude only to the extent that health and safety require. Leaders also need to protect their own privacy in similar situations. NO EXCEPTONS WLL BE MADE TO THS NATONAL POLCY OF THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERCA. ATTENTON! FRST AD AND CPR CERTFCATON ARE REQURED!! Philmont requires that at least one person, preferably two persons, either an advisor or a youth participant, in every crew be currently certified in first aid and CPR (minimum 8 hour course) from a nationally recognized organization such as American Red Cross Standard First Aid or National Safety Council Level 1 First Aid. Several hours may be required for Philmont medical staff to reach a remote backcountry location after a message is delivered to the nearest staffed camp. First Aid and CPR training will result in proper and prompt attention being given to injuries and/or illnesses. AGZ REQUREMENTS PHLMONT EXPEDTON PARTCPANTS MUST BE AT LEAST 13 BY JANUARY 1 OF THE PARTCPATON YEAR. TO AVOD DSAPPONTMENT... REQUREMENTS FOR PHLMONT PARTCPATON CANNOT BE RELAXED... PLEASE DO NOT REQUEST OR EXPECT EXCEPTONS! The average Philmont participant is 15 years of age. The Philmont attendance requirement is: "13 years of age by January 1 of the year attending, without exception". Experience has shown that many younger Scouts at Philmont lacked the ability to meet the physical, mental and emotional challenges of backpacking over rugged trails at high elevations. This inability often adversely affected the experience of the entire crew. Advisors should exercise careful consideration to be sure that youth participants who are barely over 13 years of age by January 1, 1993, are mentally, emotionally and physically prepared for a Philmont trek. WEGHT GUDELNE AND RECOMMENDATONS Each participant and advisor who will participate in a Philmont trek is encouraged to meet the recommended guidelines in the heightlweight chart shown on the next page. Those who fall within these guidelines are more likely to have an enjoyable trek and to avoid incurring health risks. Every Philmont trek means carrying a backpack weighing lbs. over steep trails at relatively high elevations (6,500-12,500 feet above sea level). The right hand column shows the maximum recommended weiqht to participate in a Philmont trek. The Philmont medical staff have determined that anyone who exceeds this limit is at extreme risk for health problems. Those who exceed these limits may not be permitted to backpack or hike in the Philmont backcountry.

HEGHT RECOMMENDED WEGHT (lbs.) RECOMMENDED YRS 35 YRS + LMT This table is based on the revised Dietary Guidelines for Americans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services. PHYSCAL PREPARATON To enjoy a Philmont experience everyone who plans to take a trek must be physically prepared. At Philmont every person will carry a lb. pack over steep, rocky trails at elevations ranging from 6,500 to 12,441 feet. A regular program of physical conditioning for at least three to six months prior to taking a trek is essential. A longer period is required for those who are more than 25 lbs. overweight and for those unaccustomed to physical exercise. The first step is to get a physical examination from your physician. Use the forms provided by Philmont. Complete the health history on page 1 and then schedule a time for a physical exam. Staff physicians at Philmont reserve the right to deny access to the trails to any adult or camper on the basis of the physical recheck at Philmont. All medical evaluation forms will be checked by Philmont medical staff. Areas of concern include, but are not limited to: heart disease, seizure disorder, sickle cell anemia, hemophilia, orthopedic surgery or problems within one year, and excessive weight. Blood pressure without medication must be less than 150/90 for a participant to be permitted to hike at Philmont. Adults and youth participants should begin a program of exercise and dieting at least six months prior to a Philmont trek. f there are any doubts after the individual has had a physical examination, contact Philmont. A program of regular aerobic exercise is highly recommended to become physically conditioned for Philmont. Plan to exercise for 30 to 60 minutes 3 to 5 times a week. Jogging, running uphill or up long flights of stairs and hiking with a full pack are excellent preparation. How fast you run or how far you go is not nearly as important am regular exercise. Other aerobic exercises such as swimming, bicycling, stationery cycling and aerobic exercise classes can supplement your training. Start slowly and gradually increase the duration and intensity of your exercises. A sample conditioning program was mailed to each group several months ago as a guide for your own program. Also refer to the "Recommendations Regarding Chronic llnesses" attached to the Philmont medical form. f anyone has questions, contact the family physician.

The "Guidebook to Adventure" describes helpful training for your Philmont expedition, success of vour expedition depends u wn the thoroushness of your trainina and the tearwork developed bv vour crew. An established training program is heartily recommended. Select a hilly area for your training. start with a short hike and a light pack. ncrease the mileage and your pack weight as your training progresses. t is important to hike often enough while carrying a pack and wearing the boots which you will use at Philmont to toughen your feet and to break in your boots. Backpacking is the best way to prepare for a Philmont Trek. t is highly recommended that everyone fulfill the requirements for Backpacking Merit Badge. These include three 15 mile treks with two overnights each and one 5 day backpacking trek covering at least 30 miles. Fulfilling these requirements will enable you to enjoy a Philmont trek. The Venture backsacking pamphlet also has excellent tips on preparing for a Philmont trek. Be prepared! ORGANZE YOUR CREW A well qualified Scout or Explorer should be selected as crew leader before training begins. The crew leader is a key person for a successful Philmont expedition and the advisor must work closely with this person. The crew leader provides leadership for: * making itinerary selections based upon the desires of the crew. * choosing routes during the trek based upon the capability of the crew. * setting up and breaking camp. * establishing a duty roster. * seeing that "smellables" are properly stored and that other precautions are followed to avoid encounters with bears and other wildlife. * making sure that the Philmont Wilderness Pledge is upheld and that every campsite and fire pit is left clean. The advisor is responsible for : * arranging transportation, overnight stops and meals en-route to and from Philmont. * ensuring the safety and well being of everyone in the crew. * addressing crew conflicts that may require discipline. * serving as a counselor and coach and giving appropriate guidance to the crew leader. f a crew member has earned a religious award in Scouting, consider asking him to serve as chaplain's aid. A kit of worship resources will be provided for use along the trail. ROLES OF THE RANGER, ADVSOR AND CREW LEADER The Ranger assigned to serve as a resource for your crew may be either male or female. You and your crew are expected to treat the Ranger with respect whatever the Ranger's gender may be. Philmont and the Boy Scouts of America prohibit language or behavior that belittles or puts down members of the opposite sex, unwelcome advances, racial slurs, chastisement for religious or other beliefs or any other actions or comments that are derogatory of people. We need to lift people up for the good things they do and refrain from putting them down for mistakes or poor judgement. The Ranger serves as a teacher and a resource for your crew and helps to coach the crew leader as well as the entire crew. As an adult advisor, your role it to counsel your crew leader and crew. f it becomes necessary, you should be prepared to discipline, without verbal or physical abuse, a crew member. With the advice of your Ranger, you are responsible for ensuring the safety and well being of each crew member. nsofar as possible, let the crew leader lead the crew. The more capable the crew l*ader, the more you should remain in the background, giving support only when needed. The crew leader is responsible for organizing the crew, assigning duties and making decisions. deally the crew leader discusses ideas and alternatives with the entire crew to hear everyone and arrive at a consensus before taking action.

CREW SZE - 12 MAXMUM - 7 MNMUM Experience has proven that the best numerical size for a Philmont crew is 7 to 12 persons, including adult advisors. The itineraries included have been developed for this number. You will find hiking easier, food distribution best, program opportunities greater and campsites that comfortably accommodate a maximum of 12 persons. Seven persons (two adults and five campers) is the minimum size for a crew. The ideal size is 7 to 10 persons for most efficientlv handlina crew chores and keepinq the crew toaether on the trail. Council contingents and other large groups should organize their crews according to hiking and camping abilities. Each crew can then choose an itinerary that corresponds to its ability, and travel at its own pace. PREPARNG FOR HGH ADVENTURE A Philmont expedition is a superactivity requiring careful planning and preparation. Numerous ma ~tters need your attention before departing for Philmont. The key ones are listed below. TNERARY SELECTON AND RESERVATONS Please submit your crew's five different itinerary choices on the postcard inside the front cover of this book as soon a8 possible, but not later than MAY 1. Procedures for selecting and reserving your itinerary are outlined in the itinerary section of this book. tinerary selections fill quickly; your chances of being assigned an itinerary your crew desires are enhanced by making five different choices that reflect your crew's program desires. HEALTH AND MEDCAL RECORD Every camper and advisor is required to have a medial evaluation within the past twelve (12) months by your family doctor. The Philmont Scout Ranch Health and Medical Record or the BSA Health and Medical Record Form-Class 3 should be used. Each person is also required to have a tetanus shot or booster within ten years. f these services must be performed at Philmont, you will be charged accordingly. Advisors should review each participant's medical form to be familiar with any health restrictions. Advisors should collect and hold the forms and turn them in to the Health Lodge upon arrival at Philmont. BACKPACKNG STOVES Philmont encourages the use of backpacking stoves. They may be helpful to you throughout your trek, particularly on wet mornings when you want to start cooking and hiking early to avoid warm afternoon temperatures. Plan to bring your own backpacking stove, purchase a Coleman Peak or MSR Whisperlite stove at Philmont. A ratio of one backpacking stove per four campers is recommended. The proper use of stoves should be part of your pre-philmont training (see Philmont "Guidebook to Adventurew). Philmont strongly recommends that crews transport their stoves without fuel and purchase fuel (commercial lantern/stove fuel) at Philmont Trading Posts located at Camping Headquarters, Phillips Junction, Ute Gulch, Baldy Camp and Ponil. Fuel will also be available at Rich Cabins. Philmont cannot transport personal or special fuel to crews. All liquid fuel containers should be spun aluminum or hard plastic bottles designed to carry fuel. A small pour spout or funnel is important to avoid dangerous spillage. Backpacking stoves are used with adult supervision and never in or near tents.

The tour director handles all fiscal arrangements en route to and at Philmont. Examples are: bus schedules, overnight stops, lodging and meals, tours, final settlement with Philmont Camping Registrar and communications with the local council. Preferably this person should be physically fit, capable of and willing to assume leadership of a crew on the trail in the event an advisor becomes incapacitated. deally, when the contingent hits the trail, the tour director accompanies one of the crews as an additional advisor. Facilities are provided at Camping Headquarters for tour directors or advisors who become incapacitated or otherwise cannot make the trail. These are limited, however, (no facilities are provided for families) and ovvortunities for vehicular travel to visit camps are verv limited. Tour directors are top Philmont promoters in local councils.

TRAVEL ETQUETTE A few "rules of the road" for you and your crew to remember as you travel to and from Philmont : EXPEDTON NUMBER -Wear your Scout or Explorer uniform proudly1 You are members of the Boy Scouts of America, a highly regarded youth organization. A Scout or Explorer properly uniformed, sharp appearing, courteous and well mannered is the best medium for public relations. -Use the buddy system - no one person ever leaves the group alone. -Telephone ahead to your next day's stopping place. t is inconsiderate to drop in or cancel without adequate notification. -Do not use tobacco in public. C may be offensive to those around you. -Express appreciation to those who extend courtesies to you along the way. Your expedition number is assigned by Philmont. t is determined by your expected arrival date. f your contingent is to arrive July 14, your expedition number will begin 714, which signifies 7th month and 14th day. A letter distinguishes different contingents (for example, 714-A, B, C, etc.). f your contingent consists of several crews, numbers are used to designate each one. Thus, your crew's complete expedition number may be 714-A-2. PHLMONT ADDRESS AND MAL Your complete expedition number is essential for mail delivery at Philmont. ncoming mail may be picked up only by the expedition advisor at the Philmont Post Office when your crew arrives and when you return to Camping Headquarters from the trail. You may send mail from any staffed camp. PHLMONT ADDRESS: Your Name Expedition Number Philmont Scout Ranch Cimarron, NM EMERGENCY TELEPHONE NUMBER AT PHLMONT Telephone calls to you should be restricted to extreme emergencies only. Since Philmont comprises 215 square miles of rugged mountain wilderness, it can require several hours to transport you from some camps to return an emergency phone call. n those cases, it will speed contact when the caller has your full name and expedition number. 24 HOUR EMERGENCY NUMBER

PHLMONT MUSEUMS The Kit Carson Museum and Philmont Museum and Seton Memorial Library may be visited any day. Tours of the Villa Philmonte must be arranged at the Philmont Museum. No fee is charged at any of these museums. Bus transportation can be arranged to visit the Kit Carson Museum at Rayado; the fee is $2.00/person (subject to change) each day. At least one bus is scheduled to depart from Camping Headquarters to Rayado and to return by 5:15 p.m. This tour must be scheduled in Logistics soon after your group arrives at Philmont. ARRVNG AT PHLMONT PROCESSNG AT CAMPNG HEADOUARTERS A ranger will be assigned to your crew for the initial processing through Camping Headquarters and will guide you through the steps outlined in your "Guidebook to Adventure." You will save time by carrying all Philmont material with you and by putting your medical forms and trip planner/postmaster cards in alphabetical order by crew. Plan to attend the advisor's orientation meeting at supper time. Chapel services are conducted each evening at 7:00 p.m. each evening (Catholic, Jewish, Mormon, Protestant). The Trading Post and other headquarters operations are closed so as not to conflict with religious ON THE TRAL AT PHLMONT You are responsible for all campers in your crew and for seeing that everyone hikes together as a crew. A Philmont trek is a team effort with everyone working together and encouraging each other. A crew with an enthusiastic spirit can do far more than it ever dreamed possible. Keep you crew's morale high. FOLLOW YOUR TNERARY While traveling on Philmont, follow your itinerary as planned and camp only where scheduled. f a change becomes necessary, it must be approved by Logistics Services. This enables Philmont to know where to contact you for emergency messages or natural disasters such as flooding, forest fire or damaging winds. tineraries are carefully developed to avoid overcrowding, which detracts from the wilderness atmosphere that characterizes Philmont. Crews that schedule a trail lunch for day twelve (last day on the trail) cannot be served lunch in the Headquarters Dining Hall if they come off of the trail before lunch. PRESERVNG THE PHLMONT WLDERNESS Philmont is a magnificent wilderness camping area with an immense network of trails and camps linked by roads designed for service and protection of both campers and land. n over fifty years of operation, more than 600,000 young people have enjoyed the great scenic beauty of Philmont's mountain terrain and experienced the unique and memorable programs of its staffed camps. A few inconsiderate participants, employing improper camping methods, can mar this magnificent land. Consequently, Philmont asks all campers and their advisors to recommit themselves to good Scout camping and genuine wilderneas understanding. Each camper and advisor will be asked to sign the PHLMONT WLDERNESS PLEDGE which declares that they will do everything possible to preserve the beauty and wonder ofthe Philmont wilderness atmosphere and its facilities through good Scout camping. t is expected that Philmont campers will carry this pledge to all camping areas that they might visit throughout America. The major areas of emphasis involved in the PHLMONT WLDERNESS PLEDGE are: LTTER - Each camper should make sure that all trails and campsites are left neat and clean. Camping Headquarters should be left in a like manner.

GRAFFT - Graffiti is a "litter" more offensive than paper. t is unfortunate that some of your camping predecessors have left their "marks" on walls of Philmont facilities. Not only is graffiti defacing, but it is also degrading and is contrary to all for which the Boy Scouts of America stand. Make sure that neither you nor members of your crew add to this offensive practice. WATER - You are in a land where water is scarce and very precious. Conservation and wise use of water has been practiced since the first man entered this land. You must continue this proper use. You should never bathe, do laundry or dishes in or near springs or streams. Everyone needs water, and you should always leave springs and streams as clean as you found them. TRALS - Pledge yourself to respect all trails of Philmont. Do not cut green boughs or trees or mark on them. Do not cut across switchbacks and do not alter or change trail signs. CAMPSTES - Camp only in sites designated with a numbered wood block sign. Each crew is responsible for leaving a neat and orderly campsite, whether it be in Camping Headquarters, staffed camps or non-staffed camps. Your campsite must be left litter free with its latrine and sumps clean. Carry out all trash. Fires must be left DEAD - OUT and then cleaned of debris before you depart. Leave a courtesy woodpile when possible. You should respect the feelings of those crews camping near you and those that will come after you. Low impact camping and hiking is the desire of everyone who enjoys the outdoors. Philmont serves about 17,500 Scouts, Explorers and their advisors each year. Nevertheless, it is not the wear of so many pairs of boots that mars Philmont, it is the carelessness of inconsiderate campers. t is our sincere hope that through your commitment to the PHLMONT WLDERNESS PLEDGE, Philmont and all other areas will always remain beautiful, clean and natural in order to enjoy outdoor adventure. We ask your dedication to the fulfillment of this goal. BEWARE OF POTENTAL RSKS Philmont has an excellent health and safety record with over 600,000 adults and young people having attended over the course of fifty plus years. Philmont strives to minimize risks to participants and advisors by emphabizing proper safety precautions. Most participants in Philmont programs do not experience injuries because they are prepared, are conscious of risks, and take safety precautions. f you decide to attend Philmont, you should be physically fit, have proper clothing and equipment, be willing to follow instructions and work as a team with your crew and take responsibility for your own health and safety. For further information please thoroughly read the Guidebook to Adventure which will be mailed to you in mid-march. Like other wilderness areas, Philmont is not risk free and you should be prepared to listen to safety instructions carefully, follow directions and take appropriate steps to safeguard yourself and others. Parents, guardians and potential participants in Philmont programs are advised that journeying to and from Philmont, and one's stay at Philmont, can involve exposure to accidents, illness, and/or injury associated with a high elevation, physically demanding, high adventure program in a remote, mountainous area. Campers may be exposed to severe weather conditions such as lightning, hail, flash floods and heat. Other accidental possibilities include injuriea from tripping and falling, motor vehicle accidents, asthma and diabetes related incidents, heart attacks, heat exhaustion and falls from horses. Wild animals such as bears, rattlesnakes and mountain lions are native and usually present little danger if proper precautions are taken. Please refer to the Guidebook to Adventure, speak with previous Philmont participants, or call Philmont for further information concerning risks and measures which can be taken to avoid accidents. Philmont's staff is trained in preventing accidents, first aid and CPR and is prepared to assist in recognizing, reacting and respondingto accidents, injuries and illnesses. Medical and search and rescue services are provided by Philmont in response to an accident or emergency.

PROTECTON FROM HANTAVRUS Hantavirus is thought to be the cause of respiratory distress syndrome sometimes called the "mysteryn or "Four Corners" illness. This illness has affected persons in most western states. No case has occurred in the immediate area round Philmont; a number of cases occurred on the Navajo Reservation, 250 miles from Philmont. Rodents are the primary carriers of recognized hantavirus. t is believed that hantavirus is carried in the urine, feces and saliva of deer mice, rabbits and possibly other wild rodents. A person contracts hantavirus by coming into contact with rodent feces, urine, saliva or things that have been contaminated by them. This illness is not suspected to be spread from one person to another. PRECAUTONS FOR CAMPERS AND HKERS All participants and staff engaged in hiking and camping should take the following precautions to reduce the likelihood of exposure to potentially infectious materials. o Avoid coming into contact with rodents and rodent burrows or disturbing dens (such as pack rat nests). o Do not pitch tents or place sleeping bags in areas in proximityto rodent feces or burrows or near possible rodent shelters (e.g., garbage boxes or woodpiles). o Do not use or enter cabins or other enclosed shelters that are rodent infested until they have been appropriately cleaned and disinfected. Report these to the next staffed camp. o f possible, do not sleep on the bare ground. o Store food in a bear bag hung from a cable. Use tents with floors. o Promptly burn all garbage and trash, or discard in covered trash containers. o Use only bottled water or water that has been disinfected byboiling, chlorination or iodination for drinking, cooking, washing dishes and brushing teeth. Complying with these precautions will significantly reduce potential risk of contracting hantavirus. CONSERVATON Most conservation projects at Philmont consist of trail construction or repair. This is vitally important when 17,500 people use the backcountry each year. You will see some badly eroded areas which are the result of poor trail construction or lack of maintenance. Four hours of conservation work is expected of each camper to earn the Arrowhead Patch. Ten hours of conservation work is required for the -Fifty-Miler Award. The four hours earned at Philmont can be applied - the other six may be acquired back home. Three hours must be spent doing trail construction or other projects supervised by a trained Philmont staff member. One hour may be spent removing loose rocks from a section of trail selected by the crew. Philmont has several conservationists located strategically throughout the backcountry. The best location for your crew to perform a project is indicated on each itinerary. f your itinerary does not include a project area, the Logistics staff will identify an alternate project when you arrive at Philmont. PHLMONT FELDGUDE The Philmont Fieldauide will provide you with an understanding of the animals, plants, geology, weather, astronomy and the impact of humans on the Philmont environment. The Fieldguide is available at the Philmont Trading Post.

PHLMONT TNERARES Advance itinerary selection enables your crew to choose from popular itineraries which have been carefully planned. Every itinerary offers a never-to-be-forgotten wilderness adventure. Your crew will select its trek from the twenty-seven preplanned choices offered in this book. You are requested not to ask for a special itinerary, one differing from those offered. t cannot be considered until you arrive at Philmont since priority is given to preplanned itineraries and the capacity of each camp must be observed. Crews arriving without an itinerary reservation will be limited to the choices available that day. The use of the itineraries listed in this book and the policy of starting only two crews per day on each itinerary is observed for the following reasons: * t disburses people, which helps maintain a wilderness atmosphere and minimizes the physical impact upon the environment. * The location of your crew is known every day if it should become necessary to contact you about a natural disaster or an emergency message affecting one of your members. WHEN SELECTNG YOUR TNERARY - USE ONLY THE 1994 PEAKS BOOK! PREVOUS COPES ARE NVALD! You will need three basic tools: (1) a Philmont map, (2) a "Guidebook to Adventure" and (3) this 1994 PEAKS book. Bring the crews together and explain that the objective is to select five top choices of itineraries fromthetwenty-seven offered. Every crew is expected to make its selection from the itineraries in this book. Several methods may be used to determine your crew's choices of itineraries: (1) One method is to have each crew member vote for the three best liked program features after studying the program list which follows the itineraries in this book. Tally the votes for each program; using the program itinerary chart, you can determine which itinerary includes most of your desires. (2) Another method is to ask each crew member to study all itineraries and to make five choices. When all crew members have made their selections, the individual choices can be assembled, weighed and the top five determined. (3) Devise your own method for making selections. Please note that although all available program features are indicated on the enclosed itineraries, your crew is not required to participate in each and every one. Some may not interest you and others may require waiting to participate. Also, several programs must be scheduled by an tinerary Planner. Occasionally programs may be curtailed because of time or weather constraints. f all available horses or mountain bikes are already scheduled, your crew will NOT be able to have a horse ride or mountain bikins experience. DFFCULTY OF TNERARES Each itinerary is rated and the degree of difficulty is determined by mileage, ruggedness of terrain and the number of layovers. Follow the itineraries on the enclosed map. The brown contour lines represent 80 foot elevation changes; the more lines you cross on an upward route, the tougher the climb. Steep downhill climbs are often tough, too. New 1/24000 maps divided into North, Central and South sections of Philmont are available through the Philmont Trading Post at a cost of $3.25 plus postage. These maps represent contour intervals of either 20 or 40 feet. Milease ficrures on itineraries are approximate and do not include side hikes except for Baldy Mountain. All itineraries may be used to qualify for distance requirements of the Fifty-Miler Award. Please carefully consider the abilities of each crew member when making your

A wstrenuousw itinerary should be attempted only by an older crew that enjoys lots of rugged mountain hiking and is in good physical condition. Smaller crews of chartered units are recommended for these treks. Strenuous and super strenuous itineraries are recommended for crews whose advisors and some crew members have previously taken a Philmont trek. A "Super Strenuous" itinerary is the most difficult of any. The super strenuous itineraries are highlighted by climbing many of Philmont's highest peaks. They are recommended only for experienced crews with seasoned backpackers who are at least 15 years of age and should not be attempted unless in top ~hvsical condition and capable of hikins sreat distances at hiqh elevations. A regular program of physical conditioning for several months prior to your arrival is imperative. Program time is limited since much of each day is spent hiking. All itineraries are toush - the difference is in the degree of toughness. physical condition is considered a prerequisite for all Philmont treks. PHLMOMT TNERARY NUMBER "A'l & llb'l itineraries are exactly alike. They allow two crews from the same contingent to follow the same itinerary throughout their trek, although they are to hike independently on the trail consistent with the low impact camping ethics of the Boy Scouts of America. f two crews wish to use the same itinerary, send the itinerary choice cards to Philmont together and indicate this desire on the cards. Crews of more than 12 persons are requested to divide into smaller, more manageable crews. Take care in making your choice. The decisions will be tough because every itinerary is GREAT 1 The sketch maps and graphs accompanying each itinerary are designed to show the area a.nd terrain covered on each. The graphs depict approximate elevation changes; the more up and down distance shown on each graph, the more challenging the trek will be. This itinerary book is designed to let you compare different graphs by placing the ends of the pages so that the graphs appear side by side. "Smiling faces" represent layovers where you spend two nights in the same area. VALLE VDAL TNERARES Several itineraries offer an opportunity to trek into the Valle Vidal Unit of Carson National Forest which has a common border with Philmont in the vicinity of Dan Beard Camp. Philmont has agreed that crews trekking in the Valle Vidal will use no trace camping techniques. Each crew that chooses one of these itineraries will be routed through Dan Beard for training in no trace camping techniques and backcountry navigation. A crew that plans to trek into the Valle Vidal must bring backpacking stoves and be knowledgeable of their use. The Valle Vidal offers an opportunity to backpack through breathtaking scenery and a chance to see lots of wildlife including elk, beaver and raptors. The Valle Vidal itineraries are designed for crews with older youth and/or experienced Philmont backpackers. There are several opportunities for cross-country travel that are challenging. Latrines, bear cables, fire rings and other facilities are not provided in the Valle Vidal. The scenery and opportunities to see wildlife are marvelous for crews that are adequately prepared. Each crew that receives one of the Valle Vidal itineraries will need to purchase USGS quadrangle maps of the area. Every crew will need the Abreu Canyon and Baldy Mountain quads. Depending upon the itinerary received some crews will also need the Van Bremmer Park and Ash Mountain quads. These quads may be purchased from the Philmont Trading Post at a cost of $2.50 each (price subject to change) plus postage. Philmont has established four temporary staffed camps in the Valle Vidal. The US Forest Service has graciously allowed Philmont to establish temporary staffed camps at ris Park, Ring Place and Seally Canyon. The Rich Cabins and vicinity has been leased from the WS Ranch, which is owned by Pennzoil. Each crew trekking into these areas is expected to demonstrate a sense of stewardship for public and private lands. Good

RESERVNG YOUR TNERARY When you have determined the top five different itinerary choices for your crew ("A" and "Bw are not different), indicate them on the itinerary choice postcard, which is enclosed, and send it to Philmont promptly. tineraries are reserved on a first come first serve basis. Postcards should be sent by First Class Mail. Some mail carriers offering "fast servicew do not deliver directly to Philmont. n fairness to everyone, itinerarv choices must be submitted on the enclosed stc card. Philmont do,es not reserve itineraries bv telephone. fax or from previous years PEAKS books. You will receive a postcard indicating the itinerary which has been reserved for you. Bring this card with you to Philmont. SHORT TREKS f your trek has been approved by Philmont for less than 12 days, an itinerary cannot be confirmed until you arrive at Philmont. Use the itinerary selection card as follows: (1) Print across the top of the card the number of days of your trek (i.e. 9 DAYS). (2) List on the card the programs that you prefer. (3) Complete the rest of the information. (4) Mail the card. This information will aid the itinerary trip planner who will work with you when you arrive at Philmont. Short treks, 7 to 10 days, are scheduled on specified August dates. FOOD SUBSTTUTONS FOR NDVDUALS WTH ALLERGES Philmont trail food is, by necessity, a high carbohydrate, high caloric diet. f an individual crew member is allergic to one or more food products or requires a special diet, suitable trail food should be purchased at home and brought to Philmont. This ensures that each person with allergies has the proper food. Lightweight and low bulk foods are recommended for backpacking. Package each day's meals separately and write the person's name and expedition number on each package. Upon arrival at the ranch, take the food to Logistics where arrangements will be made to transport it to backcountry commissaries where the crew will be issued trail food. There is no fee reduction for individuals who bring their own food. Substitutions in the Camping Dining Hall for individuals with food allergies are made upon direct request to the Food Service Manager. f an individual is allergic to a specific trail food product such as milk, artificial coloring/flavoring, wheat products, sugar, peanuts margarine, etc., Philmont can make substitutions. Appropriate substitutions can also be arranged for individuals who require Kosher food or other food due to religious belief. Philmont asks that food substitutions be requested only for medical ( including allergies) or religious reasons. Your cooperation is appreciated. f there is any question about food substitutions, please contact Philmont by telephone ( ) or in writing.
