3 A message from ACTR s Executive Director The past year was another record-setting one for ACTR as we provided more than 172,000 rides. More important is the impact ACTR has upon the lives of those riders. In the pages that follow we share stories of how ACTR has made the difference. Still, we face a future with growing community transportation needs. Since 2000 in Addison County the number of seniors has grown by more than 50%, the number of people living in poverty has risen almost 25% and fuel prices have spiked more than 200%. ACTR has accepted the challenge and is building Addison County s Community Transportation Center. First envisioned in 2003, and scheduled to open in late spring 2013, it positions ACTR to remain cost-efficient and effective while meeting the future head on. Community Transportation is about you. This is your present and your future. Make an investment today to ensure your mobility and that of generations to come as we build a healthy community for Addison County together. Thank you! Jim Moulton, ACTR Executive Director 1

5 Bobbie Brooker Middlebury, VT Age: 94 Rides: Medical Appointments Mike Pfeiffer, Jr. Middlebury, VT Rides: ACTR Shuttle Bus System I ve been riding ACTR buses longer than I can remember (which at my age isn t such a feat) Thank you Ernie, Vaughn, Norm, Kirk, Garth, Bill, George, Mike L., Jim, Larry O., Carl, Mike R, Barb and Maggie for helping to reduce my carbon footprint, for providing relief from many of the pains I suffer growing old, and for simply being the heart of a real community that I enjoy being a part of and which literally widens my horizons. ~ March 4, 2011 ACTR Campaign / 2012 Annual Report for Fiscal Year 7/1/11-6/30/12 3

6 There when it matters. When the Champlain Bridge shut down unexpectedly, ACTR was there. During the four months the bridge was closed ACTR provided 4,000 rides to New York State residents who are employees of Vermont businesses. The employers included: UTC Aerospace Systems (Vergennes: formerly Goodrich) Porter Medical Center (Middlebury), Agrimark / Cabot (Middlebury), Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center (Middlebury) and DR Power Equipment (Vergennes). Patty Harris Crown Point, NY Senior /Chat Correspondent DR Power employee since 2000 Each and every day as I cross over Lake Champlain, I am ever so thankful we New Yorkers have our bridge back! During the many long, difficult, tiring and challenging months we were without our primary link to Vermont, the service ACTR provided was an unexpected godsend. My thanks go to the individual drivers who drove in some of the worst winter road conditions only to make sure they were there each morning for us when we got off the Ti Ferry and there again for us at the end of our work day. And the help didn t stop there! After the Ti Ferry closed, ACTR provided free bus service to all those affected by the closing of the bridge. Without their services, it would have been a huge financial hardship, not to mention the wear and tear on my vehicle. ACTR s services helped turn a major crisis into a tolerable situation that I will never forget. Again, thank you so much! Donna Clarke Crown Point, NY Accounts Payable Clerk DR Power employee since ACTR Campaign / 2012 Annual Report for Fiscal Year 7/1/11-6/30/12

7 ACTR kept those businesses in operation by helping to maintain stable workforces. Community transportation supports the economic infrastructure of the county. After experiencing 2 hour waits trying to get a car across Lake Champlain, the Fort Ti Ferry offered to let us walk on the ferry. ACTR came to the rescue. We were able to our schedule and needs. We parked in Ticonderoga, NY, walked on, rode across the ferry and walked off to ACTR drivers waiting to drive us to work. When we were done for the day drivers were waiting to take us back to the ferry in Shoreham. We walked on, rode across, got in our cars and went home. My carpool with ACTR included a Vergennes postal worker. If not for the ferry and ACTR, I would have probably given up my job or gone insane. Life is hard enough with my family in NY and working in VT. ACTR kept my commute manageable so I could juggle everything. Adam Wright Mineville, NY Parts Manager G. Stone Motors employee since 2004 This worked really well for us. I came over from Mineville (NY), the other two guys were from Moriah and Ticonderoga (NY). I am glad this got going. It saved a lot of hassle and I got home in time to see my kids. ACTR Campaign / 2012 Annual Report for Fiscal Year 7/1/11-6/30/12 5

10 Making fun happen. Special Olympics of Addison County Since 2010, ACTR has been helping transport Special Olympians to events throughout Addison County and beyond. 8 ACTR Campaign / 2012 Annual Report for Fiscal Year 7/1/11-6/30/12 Photo courtesy of Special Olympics of Addison County Maggie did her usual good and professional job of driving. Our athletes really like her and we all feel safe in her hands. We feel very fortunate having your group taking care of our transportation needs. ~ Jim Wacker, Program Coordinator Special Olympics of Addison County Addison County competitors on the winner s podium: (wearing green, left to right) Mary Lafountain, Ronnie Metcalf and Tammi Mashteare

Once a week girls from Mary Hogan and Ripton schools board the Snow Bowl Shuttle bus to spend an afternoon crosscountry skiing with women from the Middlebury College Ski Team. The college students take time away from their regular nordic team training to ski and play games with the girls. Rikert donates use of cross-country ski equipment and Stride outfits the girls with all the gear they need, thanks to generous support from local companies. Stride is a local non-profit devoted to offering girls opportunities through sports mentoring. ACTR Campaign / 2012 Annual Report for Fiscal Year 7/1/11-6/30/12 9

12 Brenda Fizur Forestdale, VT Commons Coordinator Middlebury College employee since 1999 Commuters. Saving money. Being green. Brenda Fizur, a Middlebury College employee and Brandon resident, has been riding the ACTR bus for six years. She is one of dozens of commuters who save money, make friends and reduce their carbon footprint every day. Her employer subsidizes her bus pass allowing her to ride for free, putting even more money back in her pocket. I continue to ride the ACTR Connector bus because I enjoy the convenience of the service and the savings in gas, and wear and tear on my vehicle. Thank you for providing this service. 10 ACTR Campaign / 2012 Annual Report for Fiscal Year 7/1/11-6/30/12

We hope you consider making an investment in ACTR. You are building a healthy future for the people of Addison County. ACTR Campaign / 2012 Annual Report for Fiscal Year 7/1/11-6/30/12 13
