As the year comes to an end so does the end of another great riding year. Again, we as a club have road over 10,00 miles and have been to some great and new places. Thank You to our Road Captains for another great year. Without you there would not be a club. There are some big changes happening at our club. Starting next year we will have three new primary officers. I want to give a special good bye to our treasurer George Foundotos. George has been our treasurer for 11 years. His hard work and time has kept our club s books in perfect order (I Think). Besides being a riding buddy, accountant and a great friend he was the financial brains of our club. He will be missed. Thank You George. As with George, this is my last year as president. I would like to thank all of our officers and road captains. It was great working with you and the support you gave me was very appreciated. Most important I want to thank every member for your support and friendship. I have been able to cross quite a few things off of my bucket list. Sturgis, Yellowstone, Mt.Rushmore, Washington DC and the Grand Canyon. Not many people can say that they have ridden a motorcycle to all of those places. Petty Amazing! Thank You everyone, it was a honor to be president. Coming up in December, we have our 16 th annual ride to Sagamore Children s Hospital. It is a great ride that always makes me cry. So I expect everyone to be there. Our Holiday Party, which is always a blast, is also in December. I cannot wait to see where the club takes us next year. Thank You Everyone! Ride it like you stole it. 2 Monthly Meeting October 29, 2017 The meeting was led by President Ken McKay who discussed upcoming events and rides. Bobby Jo and Herbie, friends the club made during a ride to WV over the summer, were special guests. Unfortunately, the weather was bad so there was no ride after the meeting. LI Harley Riders, Inc. 4 On Sunday, October 1st, 809 bikes showed up to support Dee Snyder s fundraiser for Melissa's Wish, a charity to assist home care givers of patients with catastrophic illnesses. Our RC s, as well as club volunteers, were there to help out with registration and blocking to allow all bikes a safe ride down Ocean Parkway. About 11 members showed up to take the ride. Bill Vultaggio and George Marchelos may have had to stay at the event site, but, their bikes got to take the lead with Dee on Bill's bike and Lorenzo Lamas on George's. Bill explained that it takes about 8 months to organize all the details for this event. We thank him for getting us involved in this charity. We thank our RC's and volunteers for assisting in an event of this magnitude! LI Harley Riders, Inc. Website: Hotline:
5 There are some beautiful roads on Long Island and on Sunday, October 22nd, we enjoyed riding them! 30 bikes and 37 members joined Probie RC Barry Boom on a relaxing, 55 mile ride through the "Gold Coast" of LI. There were hills, dips and turns on a ride that took you through mansions, the waterfront and tree lined roads. We hit Cold Spring Hills, Upper and Old Brookville, Lattington and Mill Neck then we stopped at Sagamore for a rest. The ride ended at the Inn Between in Syosset. Thank you to Barry for planning such a nice ride! Thank you to our wonderful RC s for the great job they do ride after ride! This woman s bucket list included a ride on a motorcycle. So, one of the women lent her a jacket & helmet and Mike McKeon took her for a ride around the parking lot a few times. She was thrilled! LI Harley Riders, Inc. Website: Hotline:
6 On Saturday, November 11th, the LI Harley Riders held their 1st Annual Veteran s Poker Run to benefit the Suffolk County Veteran s Home! Nineteen bikes braved the cold and 5 members in cars participated. Winners of the poker run were Sal, Ralph, Gary K., Ron, Joe S. and Deidre. Following the run, our members rode out to the home to deliver the donation of $1000!!! Our donation was very much appreciated. Thank you to Ed for organizing this terrific event! Thank you to everyone who donated, rode and participated! With much respect, we thank you for your service. L<>R Dave Paduano, Dom Mozzone and Charlie Abruzzo LI Harley Riders, Inc. Website: Hotline:
7 Bad Grandpa, Dirty Grandpa-either way it was Grandpa gone wild! On the night of Friday, October 20th, some members gathered at the VFW to watch "Dirty Grandpa". It was hilarious! The surprise, uncut version caused some side splitting laughter and some blushing! There were lots of sweet desserts to enjoy during the movie. The spread included rice pudding, cannolis, brownies, crumb cake and cookies for all to enjoy. We would like to thank everyone who brought desserts. A big thank you to Stephan & Lynne for planning movie night! Our last Bike Night was held on Friday, October 6th at Music on Broadway in Bethpage. A big thank you to Stephan & Lynne for all the great Bike Nights they put together this year! Herbie and Bobby Jo, 2 friends the West Virginia group met this past July, came up to deliver apple butter and honey they had promised the group. These men went out of their way for our riders during their time in WV. Annette and Joe arranged a lunch at Phil s in Wading River and also took the guys on a tour which included Montauk Point, Shelter Island and Greenport. FYI: ELECTRONIC SIGN-UP: Rod Morgenweck, Webmaster has established an electronic sign-up system for our overnight trips and off-island trips. 9 Bridge Icing and Winter Riding by Dom Mozzone, safety officer During our winter riding season, we all hope that the weekend weather holds up and that the temperature and precipitation cooperates so we can ride. Typically we wake up and see the sun shining. Looks like a good day for a ride, we check the hot line and, wala, the ride is on yeah!!!. The weather report agrees. It will be sunshine and a high in the mid 40 s. The current temperature is 38 degrees. You know about the wind-chill factor, so you bundle up to stay warm during the ride. Twisting down the roads, you re enjoying the ride and the scenery. There s a bridge up ahead. Shouldn t be a problem, you ve already crossed several bridges. As you start to cross this one, something happens. All of a sudden you lose traction on both tires. It s almost like the motorcycle is skiing across the bridge. You make it to the other side and regain traction and control. Although, your nerves are a little unsettled, you continue. The main difference now is you slow down before crossing any other bridges. The rest of the ride is uneventful. Still, you can t help but wonder what in hell happened. The answer to this mystery is simple ice. Even though the weather report indicated the temperature was 38 degrees, which is above the freezing mark, temperature readings are taken at certain locations such as airports, townships and schools. Temperatures in suburban areas can, and usually are, lower than what they would be in urban areas. Why on this one particular bridge there was ice, but not on the others? Several factors are involved. One is the amount of traffic that crosses the bridge. Friction from tires and heat from the exhaust of vehicles can cause ice to melt where the traffic flow is moderate to heavy. This doesn t mean you should still be wary of bridges in these types of areas. It could still be on the shoulder or on the least traveled lane of the roadway and bridge. Bridges that are lightly traveled could easily remain iced for longer periods. What about the roadway leading to the bridge? Why wasn t ice on it? The ground acts as an insulator and will maintain a certain degree of warmth. Bridges are open and exposed, plus they are usually made of metal and concrete; thus lacking the ability to create warmth enough to melt the ice. What to do to prevent a similar situation from occurring? First, understand that temperatures near freezing will vary from area to area. Some areas on LI, such as near the south shore bridges, will be cooler than others. Second, when temperatures are near the freezing mark, even around 40 degrees, use caution around bridges. Always suspect there may be ice on them. Third, slow down prior to reaching the bridge and reduce lean angle. You want as much available traction as possible from your tires. Finally, what should you do if you hit a patch of ice? As we have covered in previous meetings and newsletter articles, you squeeze the clutch in and coast through it. Avoid any abrupt changes in speed or direction. Once past the patch of ice, slowly ease the clutch back out. The key words here are slowly ease. Never grab or squeeze the brakes on ice as bad stuff can happen.. Stay alert to the conditions of the environment. Remember that it constantly changes and adjust accordingly. Ride safe, ride the winter often and have fun doing it! LI Harley Riders, Inc. Website: Hotline:
