6 Another rousing good time was had at the Sierra Social Section weekend car camp during the last weekend of June. We met again at one of the area's nicest group campsites: El Prado in the Laguna Mountains. Although the weather was warmer than usual, we kept our cool under the shade and enjoyed. the usual happy hours and potluck, as well as hikes into the surrounding areas. It's always a pleasure to drive into camp to see both fresh and familiar faces, meet new friends and catch up with someone you may not have seen for a while. We are all there to enjoy this beautiful earth of ours, to explore it, and to protect it. Knowing that we have this singleness of purpose gives us a commonality from the beginning, making conversation easy and pleasant. We had two members, Bonnie and Craig, working on their COL certifications this weekend, and to fulfill one of the requirements, they led us on some very enjoyable hikes. Bonnie took us out by Laguna Lake in the late afternoon on Friday, where we admired the results of a rainy winter (as well as some distant bovine). The El Prado campsite is not far from Foster Lodge, and on Saturday morning we passed it on Craig's first official hike then continued on to the lookout at Foster Point. The view was spectacular, with the Anza Borrego desert stretching out in front of us, peaks all around, and the observatory at Palomar a speck in the distance. Craig led us back by the lake that afternoon with a different route back, and a more extensive view of the water. Sunday morning Bonnie took us on her second hike down to where the wild California orchids were in bloom. Hiking with the group during these get-togethers is optional, but certainly one of the best parts. CONTRIBUTOR S CORNER Besides hiking together to enjoy sites outside the camp, we always have a Saturday night potluck with all manner of goodies, including the occasional cold beer or glass of wine, often by a blazing (but well controlled) fire. Finally, if you've never tried backpacking Bocce Ball, Jen generally brings hers along to give us all a chance to display our amazing athleticism. The Sierra Social Section offers a wide variety of activities from volleyball to summer pops, talks, films, music and dancing something for just about everyone. Couples and singles are welcome, so if you are interested in getting together with like-minded folks for a good time, visit the website at (All 3 photos and article by Dina Campbell.)
