4 TRAILS IN LUFKIN Angelina College Forest Fitness Trail Beginner/Day Hiking/1.06 Miles Water: At the Angelina College Gymnasium. Restroom: In the Angelina College Gymnasium. The trailhead (N W ) is located next to the Activity Center and Gymnasium behind the Angelina Community College Campus. You will find parking for this trail just off Daniel McCall Road, and you will see a gazebo by the start of the trail. Azalea Trail* Beginner/Day Hiking/1.9 Miles Water: At the Parks. Restroom: At the Parks. The first trailhead (N W ) is located at Kiwanis Park (401 Kiwanis Park Dr). The second trailhead (N W ) is located at Grace Dunne Richardson Park (200 Mott Dr). Urban Wildscape Trail* Beginner/Day Hiking/0.42 Miles Water: At the Museum. Restroom: At the Museum. The trailhead (N W ) is located behind the Texas Forestry Museum (1905 Atkinson Dr). Wetlands Trail* Beginner/Day Hiking/.5 Miles Water: At the Park. Restroom: At the Park. The trailhead (N W ) is located at Morris Frank Park (209 Windsor Dr). Lost Arrow Hiking and Biking Trail Intermediate/Day Hiking, Mountain Biking/5.17 Miles Water: At the Park. Restroom: At the Park. The trailhead (N W ) is located alongside the parking area at Kit McConnico Park (903 Old Moffett Rd). Lufkin boasts several walking and biking trails. The Sawmill Hiking Trail leads to the Aldridge Sawmill Historic Site. TRAILS IN ANGELINA COUNTY Old Orchard Park Bicycle Route* Beginner/Bike Riding/ 2 miles Water: Need to bring with you. Restroom: At the Park. From Lufkin, take US Hwy 59 south for 7 miles to Diboll. Turn left on Durham Street and continue straight (N W ). Sawmill Hiking Trail Beginner/Day Hiking/2.2 miles Water: At campground. Restroom: At campground. From Lufkin, follow US Hwy 69 south for 18 miles,then turn left on State Hwy 63 and continue for 11.3 miles. Turn right and head south on Forest Service Rd 313 for 2.5 miles until you reach Boykin Springs Recreation Area (N W ). Upland Island Wilderness Advanced/ Hiking, Backpacking, Horseback Riding/12+ miles Water: Need to bring with you. Restroom: Follow Leave No Trace principles. Permit: No fee but should register with the US Forest Service before and after trip. There are several access points; visitors should obtain a map from the United States Forest Service to determine where they are. 5 TRAILS IN ANGELINA COUNTY Neches-Davy Crockett Paddling Trail Intermediate/Canoeing, Kayaking/9.2 Miles Water: Need to bring with you. Restroom: Follow Leave No Trace principles Permit: Not required but let someone know when you go and when you expect to return. Put-in: CR 1155 (Anderson Crossing) From Lufkin, take State Hwy 103 west. It will merge with State Hwy 7 just before the Neches River. Approximately 4.6 miles west of the Neches River, turn right on Forest Service Rd 511. There is a sign denoting the road. Take Forest Service Rd 511 until you come to CR Turn right on CR 1155 and go straight until you come to the river. You will pass one minor bridge over an oxbow; the bridge for the river is just past that smaller bridge. Anderson Crossing has a small boat launch area on the right. Look for the paddling trail sign. (N W ). Take-out: State Hwy 7 From Lufkin, take State Hwy 103 west and merge with State Hwy 7 just before the Neches River. The turn-off is on the left hand side of the road at the Frank Ashby Road turn-off. The turnoff is approximately 12.3 miles west of Loop 287/State Hwy 103 intersection in Lufkin (N W ). Continue west on Hwy 7 and travel 12 more miles before turning right into campground (N W ). Stephen F. Austin Interpretive Trail* Beginner/Day Hiking/2.9 miles Water: At trailhead. Restroom: At trailhead. From Lufkin, take US Hwy 59 North for approximately 9 miles. Turn left onto FM 2782 and travel approximately 3 more miles. Turn left into the Stephen F. Austin Experimental Forest and follow the signs (N W ). Mission Tejas State Park Beginner/Day Hiking/3.5 miles Water: At Campground. Restroom: At Campground. Restroom: At visitor s center. From Lufkin, take US Hwy 69 north for 28 miles until you reach Alto. Turn left in Alto onto State Hwy 21 and travel 6 miles. From Lufkin, take Texas Hwy 103 east 37.3 miles and take US Hwy 96 south approximately 17 miles. Trailhead is on the left (N W ). Lakeview Recreation Area Trailhead Water: Need to bring with you. Restroom: At the trailhead; along the trail, follow Leave No Trace principles. Permit: Day Use or Camping Fee for the park, and register with the US Forest Service before and after trip. From Lufkin, follow State Hwy 103 east for 47.8 miles; take State Hwy 21 east 2.6 miles; turn right on Hwy 87 for 3 miles; turn left on FM 2928 for 3.5 miles to end of paved road; follow signs to Lakeview, approximately 4 miles (N W ). 4C Hiking Trail Advanced/Backpacking/20 miles Ratcliff Lake Trailhead Water: Need to bring with you, or find along the trail. From Lufkin, take US Hwy 69 north 28 miles to Alto. Turn left on State Hwy 21 and travel 8.5 miles. Turn left on Forest Service Rd 511, then take the first left on Forest Service Road 511-A (N W ). White Rock Horse Camp Trailhead Water: Need to bring with you, or find along the trail. Be sure to purify all water found. Restroom: At trailhead; along trail, follow Leave No Trace principles. From Lufkin, follow State Hwy 103 west for 12 miles until it merges into State Hwy 7. Continue west for approximately 19 miles, turn south on Forest Service Rd 514 and travel 10 miles to the White Rock Horse Camp on Forest Service Rd 514-D. Turn right (N W ). The 153,160-acre Angelina National Forest spans Angelina, Nacogdoches, San Augustine and Jasper counties. Ebenezer Horse Trails Advanced/Horseback Riding/ 1.13 miles within park, but branches into Angelina National Forest for 20+ miles Water: At campground. Powell Park Camping Resort & Marina Amenities: Aqua Play Zone that includes a trampoline, obstacle course, and 17-foot slide; Horseshoe Pit; Large Marina; Restaurant and Bait Shop; Day Use Area; Dump Station; Boat Ramps. A 7-mile hike-and-bike trail is coming in Spring Camping Fee: Day Use Fee: $3 per vehicle per day; Recreational Vehicle (RV) Camping: $20 per night for Water and Electricity; Primitive Camping: $10 per night (limited to the summer months). Take a left at the blinking yellow light in Zavalla onto State Hwy 63/147. Take a left onto State Highway 147 and travel approximately 6 miles. Turn left onto FM 3123 and continue straight until you reach the park (N W ). Mission Tejas State Park Amenities: State Park Store, Dump Station, Youth Group Camping Area can accommodate 32, Group Picnic Area can accommodate approximately 100 people. Camping Fee: Day Use Fee: $2 per person/day (13 years+); $9 Water hookups only; $13 per night or $78 per week for Water and Electric hookups; $15 per night or $90 per week for Water, Electricity, and Sewer. (Applicable daily entrance fees are charged in addition to the campsite and facility fee). Number of Persons Allowed per Site: 8 (Number of vehicles is restricted at some parks) Reservation Requirement: You can make reservations by Internet, phone, fax, or . Turn left in Alto onto State Hwy 21 and travel for roughly 12 miles to Weches. Turn right onto State Park Road 44 and continue until you reach the campground (N W ). KNOW BEFORE YOU GO The US Forest Service practices a multiple-use philosophy, meaning that several activities take place on the forest simultaneously. These can include prescribed burning, timber harvesting, or hunting. So be sure to know before you go in order to have the most memorable experience possible. DISPERSED The US Forest Service also provides dispersed camping opportunities. These are commonly referred to as hunting camps because there are no facilities and they are mainly used during hunting season. Primitive camping is allowed anywhere in the general forest area, except during deer hunting season or unless posted otherwise. Please check with the District Rangers Office for more information before heading out into the forest. Neches Bluff Overlook Amenities: Trailhead for the 4C Hiking Trail. Camping/Day Use Fee: None. Number of Vehicles Allowed per Site: 2 (with a maximum of 8 people). Reservation Requirement: First come, first served. From Lufkin, take US Hwy 69 north out of Lufkin for 28 miles until you reach Alto. Turn left in Alto onto State Hwy 21 and travel for roughly 8.5 miles. Turn left onto Forest Service Rd 511, then take the first left onto Forest Service Rd 511-A and continue until you reach the campground (N W ). Caney Creek Amenities: Lake Sam Rayburn Nature Center; concrete boat ramp and parking area; drinking water available near campsites. Camping Fee: $10 per campsite per night. From Lufkin, take State Hwy 69 for 18.6 miles to Zavalla, then take State Hwy 63 east for 6 miles. Boykin Springs Amenities: Drinking water, historic CCC shelter that can accommodate 74 people (no electricity available); Trail. Camping Fee: $6 per campsite per night. 13 LEAVE NO TRACE PRINCIPLES Leave No Trace principles are designed to reduce the impact of visitors on our natural areas. By practicing these principles, you can help protect our resources and preserve the quality of the outdoor experience for other visitors. To learn more, visit PLAN AHEAD AND PREPARE Know the regulations and special considerations for the area you ll visit. Prepare for extreme weather, hazards, and emergencies. Use a map and compass to eliminate the use of marking paint, rock cairns, or flagging. Repackage food to minimize waste. Schedule trips to avoid times of high use, and travel in small groups to avoid impact. Leave No Trace Principles allow you to enjoy natural areas while also preserving them for those who come after you. Photo by Amanda Russell TRAVEL AND CAMP ON DURABLE SURFACES Travel and camp on existing trails and campsites. Walk single file in the middle of the trail. Keep campsites small. Focus activity where vegetation is absent. In pristine areas, disperse use to prevent creation of campsites and trails. DISPOSE OF WASTE PROPERLY Pack it in, pack it out. Inspect your campsite and rest areas for trash or spilled foods. Pack out all trash, leftover food, and litter. Deposit solid human waste in catholes dug 6 to 8 inches deep at least 200 feet from water, camp and trails. Cover and disguise the cathole when finished. Pack out toilet paper and hygiene products. Carry wash water 200 feet away from streams or lakes and use small amounts of biodegradable soap. Scatter strained dishwater. MINIMIZE CAMPFIRE IMPACTS Use a lightweight stove for cooking and a candle lantern for light. Where fires are permitted, use established fire rings, fire pans, or mound fires. Keep fires small. Only use sticks from the ground that can be broken by hand. Burn all wood and coals to ash, put out campfires completely, then scatter coal ashes. LEAVE WHAT YOU FIND Preserve the past: observe, but do not touch, cultural or historic structures and artifacts. Leave rocks, plants and other natural objects as you find them. Avoid introducing or transporting non-native species. Do not build structures, furniture or dig trenches. RESPECT WILDLIFE Observe fowl from a distance. Do not approach or follow them. Never feed animals. Feeding wildlife damages their health, alters natural behaviors, and exposes them to predators and other dangers. Protect wildlife and your food by storing rations and trash securely. Control pets at all times, or leave them at home. Avoid wildlife during sensitive times: mating, nesting, raising young, or winter. BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHER VISITORS. Respect other visitors and protect the quality of their experience. Be courteous. Yield to other users on the trail. Take breaks and camp away from trails and other visitors. Let nature s sounds prevail. Avoid loud voices and noises LEAVE NO TRACE LEAVE NO TRACE 25
