1 - Project #14024 RV Research Trends in Recreational Vehicles and Owners: Motorhomes and trailers over 30 in length are becoming increasingly popular. Many of these include slide-outs which can add an additional 7 in width to the recreational vehicle. Most RVers are between the ages of 55-64, and around 85% of them are married. Fuel prices impact the use of RVs. New RVs are equipped with state of the art telecomm equipment. Sustainability is an increasingly important issue to RV owners and park operators. Sites and Amenities: Government-run RV facilities (national forests, state parks, county parks, etc.) are usually located near natural attractions, and vary enormously in terms of provided services and amenities. Private parks appeal to people looking for amenities they don t think they will find at public sites, such as full hook-ups. RV owners want full hook-ups, with sewer service at the hook-up. Dump sites are inconvenient, crowded, and unreliable. More and more RV owners require Wi-Fi at the campsite to support and internet usage. Pull-through campsites are the most popular with owners of large recreational vehicles. RV owners are attracted to sites located near certain activities, i.e. NASCAR, recreation, lifestyle, etc. Older RV owners are travelling with grandchildren and are looking for campsites with familyfriendly activities such as basketball, volleyball, horseshoes, etc. RV owners want value for the fees paid to stay at the campground, i.e. free showers, camp stores, meeting rooms, minimal laundry fees, pools and sports courts. Well maintained and functioning shower facilities are an important feature to RV owners. Park Design: Have a single entrance and exit, with safe ingress and egress. Entrance control/pay station should be located a good distance from major access roads. At least two entry lanes should be provided at control/pay station. A double sewage dump station should be located near control/pay station. Maintenance facility should be located near control/pay station. It is recommended to have multiple shower and toilet structures at larger parks. Recreation facilities should not be located within camp loops. In multi-phased projects, amenities should be built in the first phase.

2 There should be at least 15 between sites. Single lane roads should be 15 wide with a clearing limit of 25 (5 on each side). Double roads should be 30 wide. Height clearance should be 16. Roadways should be asphalt. Park amenities include convenience store, laundry, swimming pool, dog park, and sport courts. Campsites and amenities should be ADA accessible. Campsite Design: Variation of site types, amenities, and prices should be kept to a minimum. Design all sites to accommodate all varieties of recreational vehicles. Most camp sites should be pull-through sites long sites will accommodate the majority of RVs, but a few sites should also be provided. All entrances to camp sites should be approx. 60 degrees, and never 90. Pull-in sites should never be included. Back-in sites are not recommended, but if included be sure to provide space for tow vehicle. Buddy sites allow multiple RVs to camp together. These are pull-through sites that can be entered from opposite directions so the patio doors open up to each other. Group sites are also popular, and should be designed to allow access to utilities and a meeting space. A space feet wide is required to accommodate slide-outs. The passenger side door should face east when possible, and entrance to the site should be north-south. Awning side of the RV should not face prevailing winds. Parking pads should be hardened with gravel or paving. Tent sites should be separate from RV sites. Tent sites do not need to be as long as RV sites. Provide full hook-ups whenever possible (50-amp electricity, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, and cable TV). Provide Wi-Fi access whenever possible. Landscape Design: Landscaping is an important feature, providing privacy and natural character. Landscaping should limit or eliminate the use of potable water for landscaping. Landscaping should use high efficiency irrigation systems, and take advantage of available greyand rainwater whenever possible Landscaping should include native, regionally appropriate and drought tolerant plants. Landscaping should be incorporated into on-site stormwater management design strategies.
