1 Region Six Newsletter 118 McNulty Road, Suite B, Blythewood, SC Message from Sheriff Leon Lott, June is also Elder Abuse Awareness Month, and June 15 is recognized globally as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Stepping up our own awareness of this long-existing, often under-reported, form of abuse; the Richland County Sheriff s Dept. has established an Elder Abuse Awareness Team with the sole responsibility of creating greater awareness of elder abuse. RCSD MISSION STATEMENT It is our mission, as trusted public servants, to prevent crime and the fear of crime by providing excellence in law enforcement services, accountability and connections with our communities. REGION 6 COMMAND STAFF What is elder abuse? In simplest terms it is the abuse and mistreatment of older people who are often the most vulnerable and most-isolated of our citizens. Elder abuse manifests itself in many ways: There is physical abuse, emotional abuse, mental abuse, financial abuse, neglect and generally depriving another of love, kindness and care. We ll be addressing this through informative articles (some of which have already been published) and, in June, RCSD will be represented in a panel discussion with the South Carolina Lieutenant Governor s Office on Aging. 2 Serving Lake Carolina, Blythewood, and Cedar Creek Areas REGIONAL NEWS Region Six Deputy Spotlight Deputy Brittany Brown My name is Brittany Brown. I have been employed with the Richland County Sheriff s Department for a little over three years. I started at the Richland County Judicial Center as a Class 3 (Judicial Services) deputy. Working the courthouse gave me a really strong foundation on how to deal with people and communicate effectively. Everyday I was able in a small way to contribute to the operations of the courthouse while getting a first hand look at how the law works, both civilly and criminally. March 23, 2018, I transitioned from the Courthouse to the Class 1 deputy. It s been the most amazing experience so far. It has always been my goal to help in the community and I m so very excited to be allotted the opportunity to do so. I am originally from a small town located in Fairfield County called Ridgeway. I had a traditional southern upbringing by my parents Nancy and Gary who are the greatest gifts I could have ever been given. I have one younger brother, Chris, whom I am very close with. Growing up I always wanted to give back in some capacity. While in elementary school I began the Junior cadet program and continued it all throughout my schooling. In 2008 I enlisted in the US Army as a Military Police officer. I traveled the world and had the ability to serve with some of the most phenomenal people. In 2014 I separated from the active duty component of the military. While on active duty status I was able to gain several certifications to include emergency management control, human resource specialty and communications. In 2015 I received my Associates Degree from Midland s Technical College in Criminal Justice. Currently I m enrolled in the bachelor s program at Columbia College, majoring in Criminal Justice, with less than a year left to graduate.
