2 TOURS & SPECIAL EVENTS FCCLA offers special events throughout the conference. These events must be registered for and may require an additional fee for participation. Advisers/chaperones are required to register for and accompany students who are participating in these special events. You can register for these events in the FCCLA Portal in conjunction with your National Leadership Conference registration. There are a combination of walking tours and tours where transportation is provided. Please review the departure and return locations noted in the description. All tour tickets must be picked up at the FCCLA Tour Desk at least 45 minutes prior to the published departure time. This applies to walking tours as well tickets will not be available at the venues for pickup. When registering for tours be sure to check departure and return times for possible conflicting event times other conference activities. 3 2018 NLC TOURS Georgia Aquarium Walking Tour Featured NLC Tour Georgia Aquarium is a leading 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Atlanta, Ga., committed to working on behalf of all marine life through education, preservation, exceptional animal care, and research across the globe. Georgia Aquarium inspires, educates, and entertains its millions of guests about the aquatic biodiversity throughout the world through its hundreds of exhibits and tens of thousands of animals across its seven major galleries. Explore over 13 acres of wonder featuring Whale Sharks, Manta Rays, Beluga Whales and the NEW Puffins exhibit. Participants will have a General Admission ticket that includes all public exhibits, galleries, Sea Lions at Sun Trust Pier, Dolphin Celebration and NEW 4D Theater. Tickets will be valid during Georgia Aquarium normal operating hours and must be picked up at the FCCLA Tour Desk. The Georgia Aquarium is within walking distance of the hotels and GWCC. Atlanta Braves vs. Cincinnati Reds Baseball Game Nothing screams summer like our national pastime (baseball) and what could be better than watching the hometown Atlanta Braves take on the Cincinnati Reds on a summer afternoon! The Braves have played one full season at the all new SunTrust Park which opened in This beautiful new park is located just 10 miles outside of downtown Atlanta. Seats for the game will be located in the outfield. 4 Atlanta: Today and Yesterday Tour Hop on board our motorcoach for a sightseeing tour of some of the city s top sites! Your guide will share stories and history of Atlanta as you make your way from Downtown to the state Capitol, Centennial Olympic Park (where the 1996 summer Olympics took place), the Buckhead mansions, Civil War Battleground Sites, the Beltline, and dozens of other destinations! A 15 minute stop will be made at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, where the iconic civil rights leader is buried. This popular half-day tour will also drive past the Margaret Mitchell House, home of Gone with the Wind s author, as well as the Fox Theatre. Following the tour, we ll be dropped at the Center for Civil and Human Rights, just a few blocks away from your hotel. The Center is an engaging cultural attraction that connects the American Civil Rights Movement to today s Global Human Rights Movements. Presidential History Tour Our tour starts with a visit to the Atlanta History Center, a 33 acre experience featuring awardwinning exhibitions, the Historic Swan House which is traditionally known as one of the most recognized and photographed landmarks in Atlanta (scenes from the Hunger Games were filmed here), and the Smith Family Farm, an 1860 s working farm. Originally located in East Atlanta, the farm survived destruction of Atlanta during the Civil Ware and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Our next stop takes us to the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum. The Jimmy Carter Presidential Museum is filled with interactive displays and fascinating exhibits that the all visitors will enjoy. Experience A Day in the Life of the President, step into a life-size replica of the Oval Office or take a virtual trip with the Carters to fight disease and promote democracy around the world. The Presidential Library is nestled between two lakes on 30 acres of park land and provides a tranquil setting with a view of the Atlanta skyline. Atlanta s Historic Fourth Ward Park is the perfect place to get your blood flowing by jogging or strolling our 5k course! The emphasis is on having fun, meeting new people and working those muscles. And for added fun this year, the run will be hosted in the evening and feature a glow in the dark theme! All FCCLA Run4Red 5K proceeds benefit a local Atlanta charity. Participants are required to have a signed waiver on file that can be found on the FCCLA website. 8 FCCLA Special Event: NLC Music Festival You won t want to miss this year s NLC Music Festival! Guests will enjoy an outdoor music festival at the Wolf Creek Amphitheater. Festival goers will enjoy the outdoor activities such as inflatables, lawn games, classic sports games, caricature artists, and so much more. Prior to the headliner taking the stage, a local DJ will get the party started. And don t forget the main event! Boyce Avenue will headline the music festival singing original music and cover songs from all the artists you know and love. There will be plenty of food options available at Food Truck Alley. You will receive a coupon to redeem for an entrée and beverage. Additional food purchases and beverages can be purchased. Boyce Avenue Boyce Avenue, a Sarasota, Florida-based band popular for its strong acoustic roots and melodic rock sound, consists of the three brothers Alejandro, Fabian, and Daniel Manzano. The band first came together in 2000, when Alejandro (lead vocals, guitar, piano) and Fabian (guitar, vocals), then 14 and 16 years old, respectively, started playing guitar. 9 FCCLA Gala Dance Party & Silent Disco Atlanta is known for its high energy and southern hospitality, tonight, guests will get down at the FCCLA Gala featuring and Digital Dance Party and Silent Disco! With two different event spaces everyone will be sure to walk away feeling like they ve danced the night away. There will be buffets with finger foods and unlimited drinks that are included in the ticket price. Grab a bite to eat before making your way to the Digital Dance Party or Silent Disco. Marty the Party will be the main attraction in the LED room with LED décor, and a variety of arcade games. Here Marty will be playing the songs that will get you hyped throughout the evening. The other venue space will feature a different kind of dance party.a Silent Disco! What is a Silent Disco? A silent disco is a surreal social experience in which people dance to music via distributed wireless headphones. In lieu of one unified speaker system, three different channels of music are sent simultaneously to each receiver. Participants can choose to listen to one channel, or toggle between three stations. People get to control the DJ not the other way around. A silent disco is a crazy sight to behold and even crazier to partake it. 10 2018 NLC CAREER EXPLORATIONS Children s Museum of Atlanta During this unique behind the scenes tour of the Museum, students will learn how educational exhibits for children come to life, ageappropriate programming is created, and to respond to the needs of our community and our earliest learners. Following the museum tour, students will meet with members of the Museum s Education team to learn more about their careers. If time allows, students will help them brainstorm new activities for the Museum floor! This will be a particularly fun and special opportunity for students interested in early childhood education careers in an informal, hands-on learning environment. Students will be able to explore and better understand the power and impact of a children s museum! Click here for more information on the Children s Museum of Atlanta. The Children s Museum is within walking distance of the hotels and GWCC. Junior Achievement of Georgia Every year more than 30,000 middle school students from Atlanta Public Schools, DeKalb County Schools, Fulton County Schools and Marietta City Schools have the opportunity to take part in JA BizTown and JA Finance Park. Located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, inside of the Georgia World Congress Center, the high-impact education center allows middle school students to experience learning like never before. Following a series of in-class lessons, the experience at the JA Chick-fil-A Foundation Discovery Center brings education to life and provides students with an immersive learning experience that gives them a glimpse of what their futures can entail. This Career Exploration is only open to students and includes lunch. Advisers/Chaperones should plan to drop off students at the published start time and pick them up promptly after the exploration ends. The JA Discovery Center is located in Building C of the GWCC. JA BizTown (Grades 6-7 Only) JA BizTown is an unforgettable experience where students interact within a simulated economy and take on the challenge of fueling a business. Here, students discover the intricacies of being a member of the community, while exploring a myriad of opportunities awaiting their futures. Curriculum will be sent out to all participants and their advisers. There will be a hosted webinar to review curriculum and details of the simulation prior to the conference. The JA Discovery Center is located in Building C of the GWCC and lunch will be provided. Pg. 10

11 JA Finance Park (Grades 8 12 Only) JA Finance Park is an authentic simulation where students experience their financial futures. Guided by their life situation, students apply knowledge gained in the classroom to make routine budget decisions; ultimately, building skills to confidently navigate today s economic environment. Curriculum will be sent out to all participants and their advisers. There will be a hosted webinar to review curriculum and details of the simulation prior to NLC. The JA Discovery Center is located in Building C of the GWCC and lunch will be provided. Adviser Volunteers Needed Advisers can sign up to help facilitate these sessions. Curriculum will be sent in advance and a hosted webinar will be provided to review the curriculum and details for the simulations by June 1, Twenty (20) advisers are needed for each course, JA Biztown and JA Finance Park. The JA Discovery Center is located in Building C of the GWCC and lunch for volunteers will be provided. Sign up to volunteer when registering for the conference. There is no additional fee for adviser volunteers. You will learn about LIFE University, LIFE s undergraduate degree programs, including Culinary Nutrition, Dietetics and Sports Health & Nutrition, Financial Aid, Admissions, Athletics and Student Service representatives will be available to answer all your questions. Enjoy a complimentary lunch sponsored by LIFE. This special campus tour is open to students, FCCLA advisers, counselors, and parents. They are the go-to source for inspiration and access for high school and college woman. GenHERation is coming to Atlanta and offering multiple opportunities for FCCLA members. Delivering Success with GenHERation and UPS Join GenHERation on Thursday, June 28, 2018 from 9:00 am 1:00 pm for a visit to UPS to tour their headquarters, meet their female leaders, and compete in a group challenge with your fellow FCCLA members. All participants who register for this event will have the chance to win a one-on-one mentoring session with a female executive. Date: Thursday, June 28 9:00 am 1:00 pm 4 hours Price: $45 Price Includes: Transport by air-conditioned motorcoach, tour of UPS campus, group challenge, meeting with female executives, GenHERation administrative fees, and gratuities and tax. GenHERation Connection Atlanta Join GenHERation for the first GenHERation Connection event in Atlanta.
