5 From The Vicarage The Great Forty Days of Easter Last month we celebrated Easter Sunday27th March and for many Easter is a one day event or perhaps 2 weeks if thinking about school holidays. However Easter is more than that, it is a season, lasting forty days. It reminds us of the forty days when Jesus appeared as the Risen Lord before His Ascension into heaven, which we remember on Thursday 5 th May. In many churches a Paschal (or Easter) Candle is lit during services for these forty days. During this period we read of the many appearances of Jesus to his disciples and others.(see Acts 1:3 and 1 Corinthians 15:4-7)..He was raised on the third day appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time. Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Other references to his appearances are worth reading too.. his appearance to the women on Easter morning (Luke 24:1-12), to two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-31), to ten apostles on Easter evening (John 20:19-23), to Doubting Thomas (John 20:24-29), and to seven by the Sea of Galilee (John 21:1-14). The many appearances over the 40 day period was evidence of the fact of his resurrection. As well as giving evidence of the resurrection Jesus also reminded them of all that he had taught whilst on earth and to direct them to follow his example and to go into the world. But in order to do his work they had to receive the power to do so. He told them to wait for 10 days until the day of Pentecost (50 days after Easter), Acts 1:4, when they would receive the Holy Spirit to enable them to be disciples (we celebrate this on Sunday 15 th May). He commanded them to go into the world to make disciples, baptise them and teach them. We call this The Great Commission (Matthew 28;19-20). The task is one of going out and being active, not sitting back waiting for people to come. It requires telling others about our faith, not waiting for someone to enquire. It involves teaching our faith and telling about Jesus' life and not simply waiting for someone to ask us a question. Jesus also assured his disciples that he would be with them until the end of the age and that Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them (Matthew 18:20). The Church is the Body of Christ on earth (1 Corinthians 12:27). It is during the Holy Communion that many feel the presence of Christ as with the early disciples at Emmaus Be known to us in the breaking of the bread (Luke 24:35). During those 40 days on earth after His Resurrection Jesus reassured His followers that, despite their having failed Him, He still loved them. Except for John, the men ran away, Peter had even denied knowing Jesus. What must they have felt once they heard Jesus was risen? On the one hand, they were overjoyed, Jesus was alive, the Resurrection is true, He had conquered death, but on the other hand, they must have felt shame and fear. Shame, because they knew they had abandoned Jesus when He needed them most. Fear, because He might now reject them for their rejection of Him. He had said, Whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven (Matthew 10:33) But Jesus did not reject them, he welcomed them back and this is a sign of ultimate forgiveness, restoration and love, which gives hope for us all. We know that when we fail him we will be forgiven and welcomed back. During the Great Forty Days of Easter Jesus appeared as the Risen Lord, evidence of the resurrection, he told his disciples to wait, then receive the Holy Spirit, then go out, baptise, teach and make disciples. This is our task today and as we endeavour to fulfil it we are assured that Jesus is with us. Let us be renewed in our commitment to go out into the world to proclaim the Gospel. Geoff 5

8 9 Things about a SMILE 1. It cost nothing, but creates much. 2. It enriches those who receive, without impoverishing those who give. 3. It happens in a flash and the memory of it lasts forever. 4. None are so rich they can get along without it and none so poor but are richer for its benefits. 5. It creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in a business, and is the countersign of friends. 6. It is rest to the weary, daylight to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and nature's best antidote for trouble. 7. Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is no earthly good to anybody till it is given away! 8. If someone is to tired to give you a smile, leave one of yours. 9. For, nobody needs a smile so much as those who have none to give. Anonymous 8

12 News from Nunburnholme Bell Ringers Annual Dinner This year's dinner was held in January at The Plough Inn Allerthorpe, with twenty seven people dining; the meal was delicious and the company excellent, so a good night was had by all! Heritage Exhibition An exhibition was organised recently in our church to celebrate the achievements of a four year heritage project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. It was wonderful to see the results of dedication and hard work come to fruition, and with almost eighty visitors it was deemed the 'pop up' exhibition was a resounding success! People kindly compared it to a professional exhibition: it contained information about archaeological digs uncovering an Iron Age settlement on Nunburnnholme Wold, Medieval Nunburnholme with very interesting artist's impressions of these settlements drawn by two residents artists, Amanda Roseveare and Emma Jane Whelan. 12 As part of the project three houses in the village: The Old School House, White Cottage and Hessey Farm, were chosen for research into their history and a living history video featuring our very own Peter Wilkinson was produced by John Hill. We now have a 'pop up' exhibition to share with other interested parties visiting the church or the exhibition can be taken to other venues, contact Ann Hill if you would like further information.
13 Heritage Lottery application for church restoration work The PCC have submitted an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a grant to carry out urgent repair work to the building, they await a response in May. Mothering Sunday Service Canon Rodney conducted a delightful service on Mother's Day encouraging the large congregation to fully participate by singing a range of songs, thinking about the loving role of a mother and deliberating phobias. Afterwards, during fellowship, several people made paper heart mobiles to give to their loved ones. Remembering Barbara Vine Barbara, a dear friend of the church and to many in our community, sadly passed away in February. Barbara will be sorely missed and remembered fondly, for her dedication and generous support to our church, by the people she befriended; she was always happy to help. 100 Club Dates for Diary Songs of Praise on Sunday 1st May, 6pm: everyone is very welcome to this family service. 15 CHRISTIAN AID WEEK May 2016 This is the week we love every neighbour. Jesus calls us to love our neighbour as ourselves, and not just the ones next door or at the end of the street. Morsheda s story I feel very scared of the river. When I look at it I keep thinking it is coming. In Bangladesh, Morsheda lives in fear of the river. No matter how hard she works, every year the floods damage her home, leaving her and her children struggling to cope. Please join us and together, we can lift our global neighbours like Morsheda to safety this Christian Aid Week. Find out more about her story. Join us at Shiptonthorpe Methodist Church on Tuesday 19th April at 7pm and hear more about the work of Christian Aid. Cake and coffee after. 17 When you re smiling, when you're smiling, the whole world smiles with you so sang Frank Sinatra. There is much evidence from the medical profession that smiling is good for you The Bible reflects that too; did you know that God likes to smile on you? Here are just a few Bible verses that mention smiling, and a little story about the Hoiday Inn staff selection process that will make you smile: Psalm 4:6 Many people say, Who will show us better times? Let your face smile on us, Lord. Psalm 85:11 Truth springs up from the earth, and righteousness smiles down from heaven. Song of Solomon 4:2 Your teeth are as white as sheep, recently shorn and freshly washed. Your smile is flawless, each tooth matched with its twin. Holiday Inn, when looking for 500 people to hire for new positions in a new facility, interviewed 5000 applicants. The hotel managers who were interviewing excluded all applicants who smiled less than four times during the interview. This applied to people competing for jobs in all categories 17

19 Warter Church Of England Primary School The spring term has whizzed by at Warter with the children continuing to enjoy and achieve highly on their learning journey. This term we have welcomed Rev.Japhet Kaberia Kabilu from the Methodist Church in Market Weighton to share his experiences of living and working in Kenya with us. This has led to a shared worship and the development of a link with a school. The school is the Nija Primary School in Maua which is the town Japhet and his wife Rachel come from. This is a state school but all the children and their parents have to finance their own books and stationary. To begin our relationship with the school each class in school will write a class letter together about their class and donate a favourite book or activity they would like to share. Japhet and Rachel will then deliver our books and information to the school when they visit Maua. Pictured right: Rev. Japhet and his wife Rachel. The children and parents have also kindly donated a number of paperback books alongside a range of stationary items for Japhet and Rachel to deliver when they visit the school later this month. The righteous considers the needs of the poor. Proverbs 29:7 God sends children to enlarge our hearts and make us unselfish and full of kindly sympathies and affections. 19
20 20 A Message from AB Sentamu Between Advent 2015 and Trinity 2016 I will be engaging in a Diocesan Pilgrimage of Prayer, Witness and Blessing. The vision for this Pilgrimage lies in the roots of our Christian Heritage. As I have prayed and waited on God, I have been inspired by the great Northern Saints, such as Aidan, Cuthbert, and Hilda who took to the road to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ. To those of you who will be providing hospitality of sanctuary and refectory, I want to say a huge thank you. As we meet and pray together, I pray that we may be a mutual blessing one to another. But the sanctuary and the refectory are only part of the story. We must also get out on the road! We are a Church on the road in mission ready to make Christ known in word and deed. Come and join me, in prayer and in person, so that together we may be part of God's transforming work in this Diocese. Itinerary for our area Tuesday 5th April 9:30 Walk from Burnby Hall around Pocklington and its Market Place to All Saints Pocklington for coffee morning. 11:30 Pilgrimage Prayers at All Saints Pocklington 12:15 Brief Pause for Prayer at the Sotheby Cross in the churchyard 13:20 Walk from the Station Hotel to Wold Haven 15:30 Walk from Wold Haven to St Catherine s Barmby Moor (2.1m) 17:00 Pilgrimage Prayers at St Catherine s Barmby Moor As Archbishop John has said, he would love to have your company, so if you are able, please do join him for all, or part of the day SUNDAY 10 th APRIL 4.00pm Deanery Celebration Service at All Saints Pocklington with Confirmations, led by the Archbishop.
