3 A viii. Orientation discussion Ron Frank would like to have orientation sessions for new and alternate members before Christmas. Those requiring orientation should come to next meeting but arrive at 4:30 for session, have dinner then stay for regular meeting to familiarize them with the process. Done, see link above. C. Operational overview C i & Cii. Operation update & Information Items - Tony Clark Safety Stats Our Crew: September RI 1; YTD RI 2 September 2011 MIR 8.5; 2012 YTD MIR Year End MIR 6.7; There is significant improvement. Exposure hours September 23,497; YTD 233,471 Contractors: September RI 1; YTD RI 4 September MIR 4.3; YTD MIR 3.0 Exposure hours September 46,012; YTD 263,577 Logging so far 804,000 m³ has been harvested. For reference, this would be equivalent to approximately 18,000 truckloads. September YTD, a total of 923,000 m³ was harvested. The plan for 2012 is 1.1 million m³. Road construction is at 91 km with a target of 130 km. In 2011 the total built was 141 km. We were down for heat 9 days from August to October as it was unseasonably dry. And the snow is on its way, but currently we are working in WR307, MBranch, CBranch, Kim Creek, Lower Adams, Memekay East Main, Memekay North Main, Ste30 and Vic5. Mid Island Operations are working at full capacity with 26 salaried employees and 136 hourly. Mainland Coast Operations has increased its staff and contractor compliment as well. miflag Page 3 of 6

4 WFP has made a strong effort to complete outstanding waste and residue surveys. 138 firewood permits have been released so far in 2012 A lightning strike caused a fire near John Fraser in August. It was rugged and steep terrain, and a dangerous area for ground crews. The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Wildfire Branch has been monitoring the situation. It is apparently out now. There were two slides, one on A510 and one on WR500. They both ended on built roads with no impact on fish habitat. WFP has assessed and planted or grass seeded areas where possible. No spills. Ron Frank Looking forward, how are doing with engineering and roads? Mid Island planning department is approximately one year ahead with cutblock layout and road construction is approximately six months ahead. Ron Frank Do we need time for the road to setup? Ideally, yes. Operationally it is not obtainable due to financial and operational constraints. In the short term, some roads require additional ballasting (rock) if they are green roads. Ron Frank Is WFP making money? Yes. Tony will provide information at the next meeting. ACTION ITEM: Tony Clark to provide information regarding WFP financials at next meeting. Norm Kirschner What percentage of trucks is company versus contract? Approximately 60% are company and 40% are contract trucks. Gerald Whalley Please have foreman remind contract trucks to not drive through Sayward on the highway. There are people riding horses, bikes and lots of children. C iii. Kelsey Bay Dryland Sort Richard Glover Work was done on the dryland sort, it looks better but there is still dirty water going into the estuary. This is made up of bark and tannic acid. In the spring pinks will be affected. If there is low tide and the dirty water drains into what little water is there, miflag Page 4 of 6

5 the fish will have no clean water to live in. There were too many pinks lost last year from disease, we can t afford to lose anymore. Dryland sort has been expanding and dams constructed but the area was originally meant for a shop, not a dryland sort. Maybe pumping the water elsewhere during the spring timeframe would help. It s been two years with no solution. Tony Clark Cindy Fife and Island Timberlands are involved, Cindy will add comments when back. Motion to request WFP (Cindy Fife) to investigate in consultation with Sayward Fish and Game Club and find a solution by spring, before the pinks are affected. Sector presentation, Colin Buss of Campbell River Chamber of Commerce Colin presented a slide show and commentary on the first dignitaries in Campbell River and some history of the town. ACTION ITEM: Colin Buss to send (Ron Frank) Cindy Huber digital copy of report to be ed out to each of the MIFLAG members. ACTION ITEM: From the January 19, 2012 meeting, Ron Frank to contact BC Technical Committee representative to ask him to speak at one of our meetings. So far Ron has sent three communications with no success. E. Presentation by Colin Buss, Sandra Barnes and Richard Glover of trip to company PAG workshop hosted by our Stillwater Forest operation A slide show presentation of the September trip to Powell River. F. Salmon Brewster Horse Trail discussion, Gerald Whalley There is much concern over the horse trail that covers approximately 41 kilometers from Memekay Flats to Brewster Lake. There is a campsite for hikers and horses only along the Salmon River. The immediate concern is that the half way campsite be protected. A new WFP built road has obliterated the trail at Pine Main. Consideration and consultation needs to be implemented. I enjoy being at this table but want things dealt with. I am dissatisfied with WFP implementation of my concerns on the trail. Ron Frank we will retrieve this issue from the parking lot at the next meeting. Tony Clark the trail is closed, WFP is still working in that area. The crossing will be reviewed when work stops. Cindy Fife feels that expectations in this area were met. The trail remains closed in this area as WFP is still harvesting there. Cindy miflag Page 5 of 6

6 has not reviewed the trail crossing but will ensure trail is passable. Grass seeding road cuts will occur and hand crews will be deployed to tidy up this trail close to the right of way. Tony reviewed the Expectations of Forest Licensees provided by Janis & Duncan (Parks and Recreation, Ministry of Forests, Land and Natural Resources). The main points were: Provide advanced notification of road development or harvesting activities that might impact the trail corridor; Post warning signs and/or temporary closure signs on the trail if deemed necessary to address public safety; Re-establish any portion of the trail impacted by harvesting operations (clear debris from the travelled portion of the trail corridor, or provide resources to the club so that club members can re-establish the trail); and Where practicable, keep haul road widths to a minimum and design road/trail crossings to minimize visual impact. G Outreach Forum opportunity ACTION ITEM: Ron Frank to ensure Outreach opportunity happens before Christmas. ACTION ITEM: Lynn Nash to finalize date for Senior s Center visit and preliminary introduction session. Cindy Fife, Ron Frank and Lynn Nash to attend.
