Business Meeting Minutes March 2, 2005, 7:30-8:35 p.m. Baron's Report Welcome to our March meeting. Winter definitely wants to give us a run up to spring. First I want to thank Bilgisayar for his years of service as our Seneschal. It is not an easy job under any circumstances and Bhakail can make things, well interesting. That said I look forward to working with Olrik over the next few years. Events both foreign and domestic filled my February. A vivat to Lady Philadelphia for organizing a delightful day at the University of Pennsylvania for the Dance Revel. The following weekend saw me in the Barony of Ponte Alto in Atlantia for their Performer's Symposium. That was a most interesting day and ended with a wonderful concert. Lastly, this past weekend was the rescheduled River Marche fighter practice which, while not as heavily attended as last year's, still managed to break even. My thanks in particular to Lady Shannon Gallowglass, Lady Judith the Confused, Lord Geoffert of the Lone Oak, and Lissa Underhill who worked extra hard to make the day a success. Which leads us to March. Mudthaw is next weekend, always a fine event and an opportunity to shop like mad. After that, it's on to the Laurels' Prize Tourney in Carolingia. And of course, Coronation is in Rusted Woodlands on April 2nd, which I am hoping to make. Have a good March! From Baroness Scheherazade Al-Zahira 1. I would like to thank Lord Bilgisayar for all his help and service to the Barony and I look forward to his help in the future. Vivat!! I do look forward to working with Lord Olrik. 2. The University of Penn Dance Revel was a great deal of fun, and I enjoyed the music of the Bhakaili Branslers; they were, as always, a delight. Thanks to Lady Philadelphia and Lady Brunissende for all of their work at this event. I hope we can do it again (hint hint nudge nudge). I would also like to thank Lord Geoffert for finding my personal banner. 3. Well, as you know your Baroness has a problem with saying no - let me first say I did not break the 50-foot rule about His Highness, but no one said anything about Her Highness. I will be in charge of the East Kingdom gifts this year. Isn't that cool? Anyone interested in helping out, please contact me. 4. We have Mudthaw this coming weekend. Which should be a lot of fun. I hope to see some of you there. 5. The following weekend is the MDA walk which I am sure Judith the Confused will talk about later. I will be walking; can't wait. (editor's note: please refer to the Feb. Salamander for previous details. Judith was not at the March meeting) 6. Have a good Saint Patrick's Day, and a good Easter. See you next month. In Service to the Dream, Scheherazade al-zahira 7
Baroness of Bhakail Outgoing Seneschal's Report 3/02/05 A charge to a new seneschal. Yes, that is you, Herr Olrik van Lubbeke. Now you have gone and done it. You have aspired to be the Seneschal of Bhakail, and shortly you will be. Now all the weight of the Barony will fall on your shoulders. That weight will not be just a perceived weight. It is real, and you will feel it at times. You will have the distinct privilege of getting to see the underside of Bhakail, but don't let that allure, blind, or scare you. I liken it unto the belly of the dragon Smaug from that old book, The Hobbit. Its belly was encrusted with diamonds and gold dust, and could allure you with its beauty. It was scary, because if you saw it that close, you knew the beast was upon you. But it also had a vulnerable spot, right by its heart. I would also liken the great Barony of Bhakail as the Jewel of the East. You have agreed to, and are now called upon this night to guard her. From enemies without seeking to destroy it, from enemies within seeking to destroy it, and yes even from itself and its own self-inflicted wounds. But how shall you do that? What weapons shall a seneschal use? I can assure you it will not be by force of might, no matter how big and scary you are. First, you need to learn and understand the Laws of the Kingdom and of this Barony. For you are now the keeper and interpreter of those Laws. It will begin, and most assuredly stop with you. You and you alone have sole authority in this Barony. But let me set a warning to you. If you should violate any of these Laws, or use them inappropriately, it will be to your harm, but not just your harm, but the harm of the good name of Bhakail. Next, find Your vision for the Barony. I can not help you there. It is one you have to seek for your self. But I can offer this advice, seek a realistic one. Some people in the SCA aspire to high and lofty goals and virtues. What do you dream of and aspire to? What would you have us dream of and aspire to within the SCA, and the Barony of Bhakail in particular? Next, you must find good counselors. I would recommend that you make the Baron and Baroness two of your chief ones. But don't just find counselors, you must seek advice from them. You are not obligated to heed their advice, but you should at least listen to it. You will shortly find a multitude of people offering you advice. Find the good ones, for not all advice is good. After all, look at all the advice the dwarves gave to Bilbo Baggins in how to steal gold from a dragon. They had lots of advice, but were hesitant to stick their own necks out. Oh, and make sure they are not all butt kissers, because you will need differing opinions to get to the proper decisions that you will have to make. 8
And just as a side thought, ok make it a major one; don't be afraid to contact the Kingdom Seneschal. Better safe than sued. Finally REMEMBER, you are here to serve the Barony. She is not your personal toy or private household, but a great Jewel, to be protected, polished, encouraged, and sometimes spanked. Serve her well, and you will find it to be a tremendously rewarding experience. Treat her badly, and she will spit you out. Now I turn unto the great Barony of Bhakail. Though we have a wonderful Baron and Baroness and they walk in high places amongst royalty all the time, when it comes to SCA legal issues in the Barony, they have absolutely no legal authority whatsoever. The dinari truly stops with the Seneschal. So support Herr Oli. At times he is going to need it. And when you need it, let him throw his weight behind you. Please remember, when a Seneschal of a group speaks, they always have the Kingdom Seneschal's ear. When he says, no we can't do that, don't get mad at him, he is only doing his job in trying to protect us. The Seneschal is our SCA legal representative to the mundane world. Respect that. Oh great Populace of Bhakail, I would also challenge you to read and get to know the Kingdom and Baronial By-Laws. Who knows, you may want to be one of those good advisors to the Seneschal, or even aspire to be a Seneschal one day. And so now, with this Key, and boxes of stuff, I turn over the reins of the Barony of Bhakail to you, Herr Olrik van Lubbeke, Seneschal of the Great Barony of Bhakail. I wish you the best in the years to come. Lord Albert Villon Aka Lord Bilgisayar now ex-seneschal of Bhakail Incoming Seneschal's Report Unto the ever nifty gentles of Bhakail do I, Olrik van Lubbeke, give greetings. WassUp? Today I take the key from Lord Bilgisayar and become your new seneschal. I am planning on having a low drama, no-nonsense, and straightforward tenure. If things go as planned, the populace of Bhakail should not have legal issues distracting them from their game. One of the first things on my list is to find a hard working deputy that will take all of the responsibilities and none of the credit. Second, I wish to finish our by-laws, so that we all know how the game is to be played in our barony. Once that is done I want to attract a few more RP s and hold a few more commons with our neighbors. To the officers I challenge you to contact me if you need anything. And to the populace I challenge you to let me know of the good and not just the bad. Either way, feel free to contact me. I hope to serve with dignity and minimal embarrassment to you all. Eric Schaffer 9

A member of the SCA (I'm not sure which kingdom) has started work on a lovely website that details some great techniques to begin binding your medieval books -- check Related Medieval/Renaissance Events Greetings! Eisental will be hosting the Emmaus Fair Artisan Exhibition (and other stuff) on April 9. I'd really like to see the kind of turnout that we had for the Southern Region Arts Exhibition. What can we do to encourage artisans (and fighters, archers, and throw weapons people, of course) to attend? An arts exhibition is a very low-stress way to show off your art or science. You show up with your finished pieces and some things you've been working on, and set up your display, work on your projects, and answer questions and talk with passersby about your art. It's a lot of fun. -- Jadwiga April 10 th at 1 PM DVM Monthly Meeting at the Philadelphia Inquirer printing plant on Rt 23 in Conshohocken. Please join us at the April Monthly Meeting of DVM at the Philadelphia Inquirer printing plant in Conshohocken on Sunday, April 10 th at 1PM. The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) will present an introduction to their group, an organization dedicated to researching and re-creating the arts and skills of pre-17th-century Europe. The Scadians will have several stations set up in our meeting room with members presenting various SCA activities like gaming, fencing, dancing, calligraphy, garb, heraldry, fighting, heraldry, music, and cooking. A DVD of other activities that cannot be presented indoors will also be screened. SCA folk tend to be people like you and me -- just plain folks, but people who enjoy doing something more with their weekends. It seems that a high percentage of SCA members are involved in high tech fields -- Computers, Aerospace, high energy physics, etc. Perhaps the attraction the SCA holds for them can be attributed to the fact that people who spend all week with highly complex, modern technology find it relaxing to spend their leisure time working with a different kind of technology, in a less modern setting. There are lots of people in all fields in the SCA -- historians, writers, secretaries, law enforcement personnel, teachers, programmers, insurance agents -- the appeal of the SCA is widespread, and several of the SCA presenters are also members of DVM! SCA has a wonderful web site at: where interested people can learn more. The local groups mainly involved in this presentation are Bhakail, centered around Philadelphia, and Hartshorn-Dale, for Chester and Montgomery counties The Inquirer plant is on PA Rt. 23, about 2 miles north of the intersection of Front Street (PA Rt. 23) and Fayette Street on the south side of the river (don t cross the bridge!) in Conshohocken. 17
Terry Jones Talks About Chaucer at Pace University Terry Jones, best known as a member of the marvelous Monty Python troupe, will present an illustrated lecture titled 'Who Murdered Chaucer?' at Pace University (New York City) on Friday, March 18, from 12:20 to 1:20 in Lecture Hall South (2nd floor, west wing of Pace Plaza). The book in question, just published by St Martin's Press in the US, recently received a rave review in the New York Times (Jan 19, 2005), and is titled 'Who Murdered Chaucer? A Medieval Mystery' and is co-authored by Terry Jones, Robert Yeager, Terry Dolan, Alan Fletcher and Juliette Dor. Originally presented as a performance piece at the New Chaucer Society meeting at the Sorbonne in Paris, the paper became a wonderful book. The Times describes the book as a 'hefty, beautifully illustrated volume 'that tells a shaggy-dog story and 'bring(s) haucer's world to life.' There will be books for sale and signing after the lecture. Those interested in attending should RSVP to Audrey Brutus, Honors Program, Pace University ( or <abrutus@pace.edu>), by Thursday, March 17. Come to the main entrance of One Pace Plaza (across the street from City Hall downtown) and bring a picture ID (driver's license or passport). You will then be directed to the lecture hall.
