1 A Message From Our President! June was a very sad month for the Fagowees. We lost one of our dearest members, Annie Easley, on Saturday, June 25th. She was a wonderful part of our club and many other CMSC clubs. A light like hers will be hard to forget and will live on in our hearts for many years to come. Annie had a very special impact on my life but she never knew it. I found myself not feeling as healthy as I use to and I thinking about what I wanted for my life as I get older. I thought of the people around me who were aging gracefully. Then it hit me! I want to be just like Annie Easley when I grow up! I got motivated to get healthy again, shed 30 lbs and life feels good again. Annie lived such an active lifestyle that she inspired me to get myself healthy and active again. I want to be skiing well into my 70s as she did and she s proof that it can be done. I told her all of this the last time I saw her. I hope that she heard me. I have had many members me about funeral services. Nothing formal was ever planned but a gathering and celebration of her life will be held at a later date. As soon as I receive word about it, something will go out to all of our members via . Annie, you will be missed. I have wanted to write something in my newsletter article about the trips our club organizes. Many of you reading this have never been a trip leader. What s holding you back? You go on our trips. Why not give back to the club and try organizing one? I want to encourage you to consider presenting your ideas to either our Summer or Winter Socials. It takes a lot of planning, time, energy, and blood/ sweat/tears to run a trip. Recently we ve had a few disappointed members out there because they were shut out of an event. I really want to encourage you to sign up early for any trip or event that you may be interested in. Our membership base is smaller these days and we have to plan differently than we use to. Trips will be at risk of being canceled if no one signs up. People will be told there are no more openings due to having to work with a caterer or time limit. If you see a trip that interests you, please communicate your interest to the trip leader. Please do not take your frustration out on them. They really do the best job possible and it s nothing personal. If you scare them off and they stop running trips for our club, then what? August is full of fun events so listen up. You probably won t get to read this in time for me to remind you about the Informal Meeting at Edgewater Yacht Club on August 2nd. It s always a fun time. Thank you Joe M. for hosting us! Why don t you get yourself a ticket to the Ballroom to Bikini Benefit on August 4th. Some of Cleveland s finest Celebrity Chef s dishing up some of their favorite foods and it s for a good cause. Why don t you get your wallet out for August and support our Team Fagowees in the MS Pedal to the t Point. Good luck team! Hope you raise more than you did last year. The Skullz are riding two trails this month - one August 13th and another y on the 27th (this one is in DaleBob s part of the world and from what I heard a very good time was had by all last year). Houseboat is sold out, but if you want to end your summer on a high note contact Kahuna or Lee to get on the waiting list. There s still a lot of summer left so get out there and enjoy it. Jodi August 2011

3 A Tribute to Annie On June 25th, the Fagowees and the rest of CMSC lost the most awesome member in history. Annie Easley will be remembered for her quick wit, warmth, and bright, smiling face. She dazzled everyone she ever encountered. Just ask the Sheriff in Great Valley, NY. He was practically hanging out of his cruiser trying to talk to her while she was walking down the road with a glass of wine. And then there were the security personnel in Barcelona, Spain that she convinced to let her on the plane back to the U.S. without her passport. Yeah, TSA in New York weren t too happy about that. But she got home on the same plane with the rest of us without a passport. How many people do you know who can pull that off?!? Besides being a longtime member of the Fagowees, she was also the founding member of the NASA Lewis Ski Club, and a member of Erie Shore, Snowballers, and Warren. Oh, what memories we will all have to cherish forever bringing smiles to our faces and our hearts. Her nonstop energy was amazing. It was a rare function that she wasn t there. She hardly stopped long enough to sleep. We even got scolded on the plane to Morzine for wandering, drinking wine and chatting. Shhhh, we were told, everyone is sleeping. But not us! In fact, she was excluded from any further sleep-over s at Pat Murphy s house. Why? Because she doesn t [sleep] After a Snowballer awards picnic, we talked in the driveway for hours well after midnight. Why the driveway? Everyone left to go home and sleep. So what did she do when she was the only one not sleeping? After closing the bar (which she did most regularly) she would come back to the condo/hotel room/ house to find her roommates sleeping. Annie doesn t sleep you know. While not wanting to disturb her roomies with the light, she frequently would retire to the bathroom to work her crossword puzzles. Hmmm, where to sit? How many of you have walked in the bathroom in the middle of the night only to find Annie snoozing on the toilet with a crossword puzzle in hand? Who was it that found her at Swain? Word travelled fast. By the start of the 1st race we all knew. Probably not the story she might choose to tell. I got scolded for that one. But it wasn t me, honest! Annie preferred to tell about her excursions that you might not expect from her. She was most proud of her water excursions, especially since she didn t even like water. Since I am such a water bug, she loved to rub in my face that she has done a water sport that I have not white water rafting! Not once, but twice. Do you believe that? I know she wouldn t make up something like that, but I still want proof. Does anyone have a photo of that? I can only imagine her laughter full of excitement from the rush. I just loved her laugh. It was infectious! Speaking of water, Annie invited me on a boat trip with Karen Stary. Karen has proof of this one a picture of Annie driving Bart s big steel work boat. That was a great day! Once again there was a debate about her age. This cute young couple from Romania were guests of Karen. They asked which one of us was older. Ok, I know she looked amazingly young for her age. But by 32 years??? No one believed her when she said how old she was. The group of guys at the Village Pump on Kelly s Island were floored! Annie liked the t-shirts they were all wearing, and wanted one. They offered up only if she would show full frontal nudity. You wouldn t ask a 70 year old to do that, would you? They, of course, did not believe her. When these young men found it to be true, one of them apologized profusely, peeled off his shirt, and handed it to her. She did like to flash occasionally though. Maybe because she wanted to show off those very pretty lacy red bras. In fact, she let a group of Germans drink out of her bra. You ll have to check in with the Reineckers for details on that one. Annie loved to travel. She was a trip leader for many years with NASA and was the co-trip leader for the Telluride trip last year with Fagowees and NASA. The trips she ran were always memorable, especially the ones to her favorite destination Morzine, France! Yes she was the one who introduced Colin Bidwell and Joe McFarland! They affectionately called her mom. And on another trip the German s were convinced that she was the Reinecker s grandma. She learned to ski in 1980 (at age 48) and raced for the Snowballer s in CC-Vet women, though she traveled to a lot of the races on the NASA bus (i.e. Mark Hyatt s van). She hated skiing in the flat light, but watch out if it was a bright, sunny day! She could beat anyone in her class if the conditions were right. Although she wanted to race with the Seniors Vets, the race committee wouldn t take the Men off of Senior Vet Men. She even raced on her snowboard at Kissing Bridge once. BTW, she learned to snowboard at age 68! When I came home from Bristol this year with a broken wrist, I asked how she learned without getting hurt. Unlike you Terri, I am patient. She took lessons every day for a full week at Grey Rocks. Oh, but let s not forget her other sports. Besides skiing and snowboarding, she loved to play tennis and golf, regularly participating in golf outings for the Fagowees, Snowballers, NASA, Highlanders, Warren, and CMSC. One of her greatest accomplishments was a hole-in-one at Emerald Woods Golf Course with the NASA golf league. We were golfing on the 9th hole on Pine Valley, and I hit a good shot and landed on the green. Annie asked me what club I used; My 3-wood. She takes out her 3-wood and hits a beautiful shot. As we made our way closer to the green, she wondered if she had too much club and hit the ball over the green. I jokingly said, Maybe it s in the hole! I ran over to look and sure enough, it was in the hole for a Hole-In-One. Later that summer, we were at Holiday Valley playing the lower course. On a par 3, she hits another beautiful shot within a few inches of the hole. I need to get another witness. No one will believe me if you witnessed BOTH my hole-in-ones. She easily sunk the shot for a birdie. Annie had the most beautiful voice, and just loved to sing. At the end of a New Year s Eve party in Buffalo with the Warren ski club, we heard voices a few rooms down the hall from our room. Assuming that they were part of our group, we pushed the door open to find people we didn t know. But they invited us in to continue the evening celebrations. I

4 snuck off to go to sleep. But no, she sent one of the guys over to bring me back. Imagine waking up to a complete stranger standing at the foot of the bed calling your name. She told me not to come back without you. Ok. Back to the party I go. Hours later I again sneak off while Annie and one of the guys were singing so beautifully together. How ironic when one of the hospice volunteers sang to her Annie s favorite song Amazing Grace. And how about that dancing? Anybody got a picture of that gator dance (at Swain I believe)? Well, I thought it was the turtle dance, but she called it gator so I ll go with that. Annie was a great historian, with exceptional attention to detail (hence her professional success). Although some on the Board of CMSC might not have appreciated this, she always got it right. Protocol, bylaws, and the constitution were things she was quite passionate about. When we were on the CMSC Board, she was continuously feeding us history and quietly guiding us behind the scenes. These are some of our favorites oh, sooo many (we could go on for pages and pages). And we know you all have your special stories and experiences too. Annie s vibrant personality and joy of life will be missed greatly. She lived life to the fullest, and her warmth and kindness will not be forgotten. She valued her privacy and respected that of others. Over the past 6 months since her surgery, she spoke often of how fortunate she has been a fulfilling career, fabulous travels, and wonderful friends. Annie s CMSC friends are her family, as she said so often. The lesson we can learn from Annie is to be RESPECTFUL, have FUN, and NO REGRETS! Annie always loved a good party, so a celebration of Annie s life is in the works. Of course, red wine (not in a box) and dancing will be included, as these things were always part of her nightlife. Gather your most favorite photos so we can all share those oh so favorite memories! She will live on forever as she has captured us all and become a piece of each of us. Karen and Terri PS. A public service announcement for fellow wine drinkers Bristol Mountain no longer serves red wine from a box. Guess why! CAMP WHERE THE FAGOWEE? Pine Creek Wrap Up! It was a cool but sunny day when we arrived at Petticotte Junction on Friday. We looked at the cabin & the trailer and said TRAILER, Yo! It was brand new, spotless & FABULOUS with FULL kitchen & FULL bath, 2 recliners, couch, queen bed, the LAP of LUXURY!! Andy, Regina & Reno got the cabin & the rest had tent camp spots. Peeps began trickling in around 2pm.. some biked, we did 30mi, some chilled. Fri nite was Reno Jr, the Senior s 70th bday party. So after some fantastic cornell chicken by Tommy Gun, there was cake & mandatory birthday shots! On sat shelli, mark, marty, bob, & joe drove to the northend to do the trail all the way down. Meanwhile a crowd formed at the trip leader s trailer they were in PJ s & drinkin java, looked out to 20peeps waiting & said we better get a MOVE ON!! Around 10.30am, 20 or so Fagowees began north on the trail. The cool thing bout pinecreek is there s no way to get lost! It s one long strait trail along a GORGEOUS gorge and you can go as far as you like & turn around whenever. So, only 10 of us did the 60mile ride and we were rewarded midway by some of the best ice cream EVER!! :-D Sat nite thanks to Joe B. & Bill V. s propane grill, we all met at the pavilion on the campground for food & fun. Thanx to Joe B. AGAIN, as he also provided boombox & tunes!! Everybody bought TONS of food & bevies. Renée & Tom brought Minute towin It games. While the adults were pretty disinterested, the kids at the campground were fascinated & VERY entertaining to watch!! ESPECIALLY the pedometer on the forehead BOBBLE HEAD game! The campground takes 10pm curfew seriously, so the party retired up to the cabin, but many went to BED!! What can I say, after 60miles on the trail, I was TIRED, yo!! Sun some people (shelli & co) hiked, some of us biked again & many took off for home. Even tho the weather was on the cool side, which I LOVE, I think the trip turned out PERFECTLY and Tom & Renée are already scoping out a new trail for next years bike jiffi. The people made it really fun & we re already looking forward to next year! Thanx Kids! -R&T

5 Fagowees Anniversary LUAU Party Once again the Fagowees Anniversary Party was a great success with over 85 members in attendance. Festive luau attire was worn, and all Fagowee members got laid on their way in, yep you heard that right. The racing and Fagowees awards were presented and the torch was passed to Gina as our new Fagowees Ski Queen. The limbo contest showed that our flexibility may need a bit of work but the surf contest proved that we still have style.
