Time to put those snowboots away and get your traveling shoes on! Get out to the Appreciation Brunch or get moving on a trip with the Club! There s a lot of tempting activities for you to consider. NEW CLUB MEMBERSHIP BALANCE TO QUALIFY There has been some confusion about this announcement in the last newsletter. The following paragraph was meant to convey that another way to qualify for the club has been added. So in addition to a minimum balance in a checking or savings or money market or CD, you can also qualify through an investment with First State Bank Investment Service. Here is a reprint of that paragraph: Effective this year, $10,000 minimum balance in investments with First State Bank Investment Services has been added to qualify for membership. Some examples of investments: IRA, brokerage, annuities. If you have or add an investment with FSB Investment Services, please let me know, regardless of the current balance. Let me know if you have any questions. TRIP UPDATES The tours are beginning to fill up. Reservations are now open for all trips. Please don t be disappointed by waiting too long to sign up. CANADIAN ROCKIES - SEPT Due to the great response at the Travel Shows, Star Destinations has opened up more seats for us and we can accept more reservations. A valid US Passport is required. Full color brochures with all details and pricing as well as registration forms are available. Give me a call! See page 4. NASHVILLE - NOV Nashville is not a shared trip so reservations will not be limited to members only. Final details and pricing of the Nashville trip will be revealed at the Travel Show May 4th. Don t forget to RSVP attendance for the show by April 27th. See page 1. I-80 TRIP - MAY There's something for everyone on this trip as we visit a great Iowa ag entrepreneur, enjoy the original Lettermen (not imitators) at the historic Circa 21 dinner theater, tour the new U of I Hancher auditorium, "drive" a simulator car and sample heirloom popcorn. MORE TRAVELERS NEEDED! CALL TODAY! AMISH BACKROADS TOUR - JUNE 23 AND SEPTEMBER 8 Our numbers are limited to 35 due to the time to checkout with our purchases...no computers and cash only! The June 23 tour is filled and a wait list started. Another identical tour has been added on September 8. See page 3 for more details. CLASSIC CARS & CLASSY CARPENTRY TOUR - AUGUST 4 Another stop has been added: West End Salvage in Des Moines. We'll hear about the business, have time to explore the 4 stories and for the adventurous, a treasure hunt! MINNESOTA MAGIC - OCTOBER The US Bank Vikings stadium tour is on hold until the team announces their October "blackout" dates when the stadium is closed to the public. Other groups use the stadium so keep your fingers crossed that our date is good for the tour. As of the end of March, the blackout dates were only published through the end of May. This trip will be held regardless of a blackout date for the tour. WHAT IS A TRAVEL SHOW? The goal of a travel show is to showcase a tour and tell about the sights and sounds included. A typical show would have the presenter shows slides of the itinerary, give a commentary about the tour and answer any questions. There is no obligation or commitment. No cost to attend. Registration forms are available for those who wish to sign up at that time or take them home to consider further. A show is offered for extended tours of 5 days or longer. A side benefit is a chance to meet other travelers and make new friends. Note the Nashville Travel Show on May 4th. APPRECIATION BRUNCH - MAY 10 This event is for members only in appreciation for your support of the bank and the club. Call if you need someone who is not a member to help you. Myrt & Jerry are new entertainers for us. Jerry has been in the music business for nearly 40 years and has had his own dance band for over 30 years. Myrt & Jerry have been entertaining together for 5 years and play at a number of facilities all over Iowa. Come and meet them! SNOWBIRDS Don t forget to let me know when to switch back to your local address. OFFICE HOURS My office hours will change for the last 2 weeks in April while I attend a Colorado wedding and a family get together in the Smoky Mountains. Most of my hours will shift to the beginning of each week. My automatic reply will list those and the Webster City receptionist will have these changes as well. Included is the Kinze Innovation Center & Factory Tour where we trace the history of founder/inventor Jon Kinzenbaw who designed the first-ever adjustable-width 12-bottom plow, 24-row rear fold planter, and the Kinze grain cart. From this site near Williamsburg, we travel to Moline where The Lettermen will entertain us at the Circa 21 dinner theater. The next day we visit Iowa City for a tour of the new Hancher Auditorium, lunch, and then tour the National Advanced Driving Simulator (NADS) where we will tour the facility and drive our virtual auto on virtual city streets. No speeding tickets for us!! We ll end our day at the Tiny But Mighty Popcorn place where Farmer Gene will talk about this processing facility for ancient heirloom popcorn. Samples included! Dennis Albaugh of Ankeny is opening his private car collection for our group to enjoy. His collection of over 200 cars includes every Chevrolet convertible since 1912, including Corvettes. And there s much, much more to see! Included in our day is a tour of Aronson s Woodworking in Prole where Clay and Megan will show us their buildings and equipment and showcase the furniture and woodworking that Clay builds. One unique aspect is the furniture that Clay builds out of ash tree wood. Included: Motorcoach transportation, lunch, all attractions listed, driver s tip Rate per person: $90 Wednesday July 5th Amish Backroads Tour September 8, 2017 The Amish lifestyle continues to fascinate us as our lives are surrounded by technology and life speeds up around us. It will be a nice change of pace to visit the Amish in the Oelwein area. Those of us who visited the Indiana Amish last year can anticipate a comparison of the two communities. Our step-on guide will direct us to a bakery; 3 country stores each selling different items from homemade foods, rugs, canned goods, shoes, fabric, glassware to cooking items; bulk food store; and furniture store. Save your appetite for a delicious home cooked Amish meal. Space available! Minnesota Magic October 11-12, 2017 Our neighbors to the north continue to tantalize with attractions that keep us coming back for more! Highlighting this tour is a horse farm, *new Stadium where the Vikings play, and charming Stillwater. Our tour of the Skyrock Farm will include a locally-sourced home cooked meal, exhibition of trained high jumping horses, and the Carousel building with its world renowned display of dance and fair organs. We ll tour the new *Vikings Stadium with its bold, iconic design with five large glass pivoting windows and unique roof structure. Our second day finds us exploring "Gammelgården" Museum which means Old Farm in Swedish. Here visitors can step back in history and experience the lives of early Swedish immigrants in the only open air museum devoted to Swedish immigration in the United States. We ll have a costumed stepon guide to show us around Stillwater, followed by a lunch cruise on the St. Croix Boat & Packet. [ The Canadian Rockies SEPTEMBER 19-26, 2017 Day 1- Sept 19 Calgary to Lake Louise (D) We depart this morning to catch our flight to Calgary, Alberta Province. A short journey through the foothills brings us to the entrance gates of Banff National Park. This is Canada s first nationally protected parkland and one of the most beautiful parks in North America. Our coach makes the scenic drive up the winding road and soon we arrive at the Diamond of the Rockies, world famous Lake Louise. Tonight enjoy a special welcome dinner in the historic Canadian Pacific Railway Restaurant, made famous in the movie Dr. Zivago. Lake Louise Inn Day 2 - Sept 20 Yoho National Park (B/L) Our Rockies adventure starts into the Yoho National Park. We ll stop and admire the engineering marvel of the famed Spiral Tunnels of the Canadian Pacific Railroad before exploring the mystery of The Natural Bridge and the engaging beauty of Emerald Lake where we will also stop for lunch. Lake Louise Inn Day 3- Sept 21 Lake Louise to Jasper (B) This morning we journey north along the spectacular Icefield Parkway. Keep a watch for wildlife including elk, moose, black bears and mountain goats. Enjoy the snowcapped peaks, tumbling waterfalls and glacier-fed lakes as we enter Jasper National Park and continue our journey to the picturesque mountain resort of Jasper. Chateau Jasper Day 4- Sept 22 Jasper Sightseeing Jasper to Banff (B/L) This morning we ll journey through two majestic mountain passes on our way to the amazing Columbia Icefields, one of the largest glaciers masses in North America. We ll ride on the Athabasca glacier in a specially built Ice Explorer. Our driver/guide will teach us all about the incredible geological May/Jun 2017 Day 6 Sept 24 Banff Sightseeing Day 7 Sept 25 Banff Sightseeing Day 8 - Sept 26 Banff to Calgary (B) Enjoy breakfast this morning before departing on a wonderful day of sightseeing. We ll travel to the top of 7500 ft Sulphur Mountain by fully enclosed gondola, visit the famed Bow Falls and the mysterious Hoodoos. Later, we ll travel west along the Bow River to Johnston Canyon for an easy walk through a rugged canyon littered with waterfalls. Moose Hotel (B/D) Today is yours to spend at leisure. Tonight s finale dinner includes a leisurely, 1 hour horse-drawn covered wagon ride to the BBQ Site located near the Sundance Canyon Trail. Moose Hotel (B) This morning say goodbye as you transfer is to the Calgary International Airport for your return flight home. Space still available! Call Today! (B/D) Start the day with a hearty breakfast at the top of 7500 ft Whistler s Mountain! You ll travel to the top in a fully enclosed gondola which will give you an incredible panorama view of the mountains and valleys that surround the town of Jasper. Arriving at Maligne Lake, we ll board a comfortable dome covered cruise boat for a 90 minute voyage on one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. We ll stop at Maligne Canyon and take the easy and very scenic 20-minute hike along the canyon s rim. Tonight enjoy dinner and an entertaining presentation on the wildlife found in the national parks. Chateau Jasper Day 5 Sept 23 history of the glaciers and mountains. We continue our journey following the Trans-Canada Highway and the Bow River eastward. Keep an eye out for wildlife along the road including black bears, elk, moose and eagles. We soon enter the resort city of Banff. This morning we meet all our passengers as we make our way traveling through Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois. Lunch today will be on own in Hannibal, MO. We arrive early evening at our hotel in Marion, IL. Evening meal on own and motor coach will provide transfer to nearby restaurants. Day #2 Friday, November 17, 2017 Enjoy breakfast included at the hotel this morning along with luggage out. Today we have a short drive as we arrive in Nashville for an included lunch at the world famous Wildhorse Saloon. After lunch, we get to boot scootin boogie across Music City s largest dance floor. Next, we arrive at the Drury Plaza Hotel where you will have time to relax and freshen up for tonight s event. Dinner on own and the Drury Plaza kick back meal starts at 5:30 pm. This evening you will enjoy a Live Holiday Show at the Grand Ole Opry House. Return to the hotel. (B,L) Day #3 Saturday, November 18, 2017 Included breakfast this morning. Our first stop will be at the historic Ryman Auditorium for a backstage tour of the original home of the Grand Ole Opry. Next we step aboard the General Jackson Showboat for a delicious lunch and lively holiday entertainment while cruising down the majestic Cumberland River. This afternoon we enjoy Gaylord Opryland s popular ICE! This walk through holiday attraction will bring you chills as we view 2 million pounds of colorful ice sculptures. Free time available for shopping at Opry Mills Mall or explore the Parade of Trees at the Opryland Hotel along with dinner on own. Tonight we experience the Grand Ole Opry, the world s longest-running live radio show, in its historic home, the Ryman Auditorium. Return to the hotel. (B,L) Day #4 Sunday, November 19, 2017 Another included breakfast this morning along with luggage out. Our first stop will be at RCA Studio B for a guided tour, home of 1,000 hits where music legends, including Elvis, Roy Orbison, Dolly Parton and Carrie Underwood have recorded timeless songs. Now it s off to the Country Music Hall of Fame, where we can hear rare recordings of country s legendary performers, see behindthe-scenes films by today s stars, along with costumes, instruments and personal treasures from country music s Prestige Club of First State Bank Presents... [Nashville Country Christmas NOVEMBER 16-20, 2017 past and present. Enjoy lunch on own on Honky Tonk Highway at one of many downtown restaurants. This afternoon we start making our way back with dinner included before checking into the hotel in Mt. Vernon, IL. (B,D) Day #5 Monday, November 20, 2017 Breakfast included this morning along with luggage out. As we travel back home a stop in Hannibal, MO will be made for an included lunch at the Ole Planters Restaurant. After lunch, there is time to explore the downtown area for various shops and museums. We board the motor coach to relax as the miles go by and you reflect on the memories made on the Nashville Country Christmas tour.
