3 3 Introduction/Intent Theintentofthisanalysisistobetterunderstandthedemographicinformationofvisitors togovernorsisland.locatedoffthesoutherntipofmanhattan,governorsislandwasopen forits2016publicaccessseasonfor121daysfrommay28 th toseptember25 th.duringthis timetheislandwasaccessiblebyferriesthatleftfrommanhattansevendaysaweekand frombrooklynandtheeastriveronweekends. Methodology ThedatausedinthisanalysiswascollectedthroughsurveysconductedontheIslandone weekdayandoneweekenddayperweek.thespecificdayoftheweekrotatedtoensure thattheresultswerenotskewedbyvariancesindemographicsrelativetothedayofthe week. SurveyswereconductedwhilevisitorswaitedinlinefortheferrydepartingtheIsland. VisitorswereaskedfortheirzipcodesandifitwastheirfirsttimevisitingtheIsland.To avoidsamplingbiasandensurearandomsample,typically,every5 th personinlinewas surveyed.thisintervaloccasionallychangedrelativetothesizeoftheline,i.e.:every2 nd personwhenlineswereshorter.regardlessofthespecificinterval,itspresenceinsured thatarandomselectionofindividualswassurveyed.largegroupsweretreatedseparately fromindividualsandwereaskedforthezipcodeoftheirorganization,organizationtype, numberorindividualsinthegroupandwhattheydidwhiletheywereontheisland.the groupresultswerekeptoutoftheindividualvisitorsampleandwereanalyzedseparately. Theanalysisbenefitsfromdatathatiscollectedbytheferryoperatorsshowingthetotal numberofvisitorsperdaybrokendownbylanding.thesampleattemptstoreflectthe ratioofweekdayandweekendvisitorsandtheratioofvisitorsdepartingfromsoissons LandingtoManhattancomparedwiththosedepartingfromYankeePiertoBrooklyn. 4 4 AnnualVisitorship Figure1showsthetotalannualvisitorstotheIslandfrom2005to sawthe highesttotalvisitorstotheislandsinceitwasopenedtothepublicwithapproximately 585,000visitors.Thisrepresentsa30%increasefrom2015.
