The Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge (also called the 59th Street Bridge) is the principal gateway to Queens Plaza and Northern Blvd. To the south, the Queens-Midtown Tunnel connects with the Long Island Expressway (I-495) and the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (I-278). Bike paths across the Queensboro and Pulaski Bridges as well as throughout the neighborhood allow riders access to all parts of LIC. Source: Long Island City Partnership JetBlue landed here Queens Plaza, steps from Northern Blvd, is a rapidly evolving residential and employment hub which has seen extensive development in the last decade. The Citigroup building, a 1.5M SF office building houses 5,000 employees. In 2011, the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene added 3,000 staff to the area s daytime population. This is part of the Gotham Center, a planned 3.5M SF mixed use project which will bring another 10,000 employees. In 2012, JetBlue Airways brought 1,000 employees to the Plaza and residential towers and hotels continue to rise. The Hilton Hotel, Marriot, Crown Plaza and Star Aloft Hotels are currently in construction. The growing population has created the critical mass needed to support additional retail, improving quality of life in the area. Other major LIC organizations include: Fresh Direct, MetLife, United Nations Federal Credit Union, CUNY Law School, Silvercup Studios, Uber, Steve Madden, and Kaufman Astoria Studios to name a few.
