3 COME TO New York City Dear TAGLaw Members, I am delighted to invite you to TAGLaw's 10th Anniversary conference which is being hosted in New York, New York - the city so nice, they named it twice! To best celebrate and commemorate this major milestone, I hope every firm in the network will make a special effort to send at least one attendee. By coming together on this landmark occasion, we will set the stage for another successful decade of growth and achievement. If you take time to consider just what we have accomplished together as a network during our first 10 years, then you'll soon realize just how amazing TAGLaw's story really is. Here are just a few highlights: speed of growth, in the first five years more than 100 respected law firms bonded together and more joined steadily each year since; worldwide reach, in 80 countries members now have reliable contacts - that's among the best size and capability you'll find anywhere in the legal world; depth of relationships, most importantly we have formed strong bonds across so many countries and cultures. Our member firms and their clients have been the beneficiaries of this great global family. The time spent meeting and working with network members during the past 10 years has been both personally and professionally rewarding for me. New York City was settled in 1625, sits on the southern most part of New York state and is the most densely populated city in the United States. Home to the United Nations, NYC boasts over 8.2 million residents within an area of 322 sq. miles and is an economic, financial, commerce, cultural, sporting, tourism and media hub. The city has five boroughs; Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island all connected by a series of bridges, subways, trains and ferry systems. New York is also known to many as The Big Apple or The City That Never Sleeps and many remember when Frank Sinatra famously put the city to music in 1979 with his recording New York, New York. Among the safest cities in the world, New York welcomes over 40 million tourists every year. Its climate includes blustery winters, a beautiful spring, warm summers and colorful autumns with plenty to experience indoors and out. Visa / Passport Requirements All citizens of a foreign country entering the United States are required to have a valid passport. Most Canadians and citizens of the 27 specified countries (in the Visa Waiver Program) do not need a U.S. visa for business or tourism visits of less than 90 days if they meet certain requirements. Generally, a citizen of any foreign country wishing to enter the U.S. must first obtain a visa for a temporary stay. Due to recent developments in the U.S., it may be necessary to check with your consulate for more accurate requirements. For more information, visit Weather In New York City, during the month of October, the average temperatures range from F (8-17 C). For a timely weather forecast, visit prior to the conference. Tourism If you are a first-time visitor to New York City, you won t want to miss the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings, the Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller Center, Times Square, the Bronx Zoo, Staten Island Ferry, Brooklyn Bridge and other world-famous attractions. If you've been here before, there's always another neighborhood to explore, another restaurant to try, another Broadway show or museum to see; another don't-miss cultural performance or sporting event. NYC's food culture, influenced by the city's immigrants and large number of dining patrons, is famously diverse. Jewish and Italian immigrants have made the city known for bagels, cheesecake, and New York-style pizza. Some 4,000 mobile food vendors licensed by the city, many immigrant-owned, have made Middle Eastern foods such as falafels and kebabs standbys of contemporary New York street food, although hot dogs and pretzels are still the main street fare. Airport / Transportation There are three airports that can serve visitors traveling to/from NYC: - John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) JFK, in Queens (at the south end of the Van Wyck Expressway), primarily handles international flights. - LaGuardia Airport (LGA) LaGuardia, also in Queens (on the Grand Central Parkway), mainly handles domestic flights. If you're flying in from anywhere in the U.S., chances are you'll come through here. - Newark International Airport (EWR) Newark, in Newark, New Jersey, handles both domestic and international flights. It's a bit further from the city than the other two airports, but it is generally less crowded and has more modern facilities. Taxi and bus services are offered from all the airports. Below is an approximate cost for a taxi from each airport to The Waldorf=Astoria: - LaGuardia to The Waldorf: $35.00 plus tolls - JFK to The Waldorf: $45.00 plus tolls - Newark to The Waldorf: $50.00 plus tolls The Waldorf=Astoria can also arrange transportation to/from the airport. The Garage logo is derived from the original mosaic embedded in the front of the building. In the 1940's and 50's, the space was called The Nut Club, a cabaret that was a forerunner of the comedy clubs of today, with entertainers such as Jackie Gleason performing on stage. From 1969 to the early 1990's the Circle Repertory Company, an off-broadway theater troupe, used the space as their theater (featuring early performances by actors Danny Aiello, Alec Baldwin, William Hurt and Demi Moore). As a result we have established the following cancellation policy. Conference: Members cancelling prior to one week before the conference start date will receive a full refund. Members cancelling less than seven days before the start date will receive a credit of 50% against the price of another TAGLaw conference. This credit must be used within one year. Tours: Prior to one week before the conference start date a full refund will be issued. No refunds will be given if cancellation occurs within seven days of the start date of the conference.
