Horeb, WI Spooky pumpkin carving started the night out as all of the necessary supplies were available for members to produce their creations. TUBFRIM Save used stamps and expired or used phone cards for Tubfrim to help disabled children and youth in Norway. Cut about ¼ inch around each stamp on all sides. Bring them to a lodge meeting. Thanks to Steve Sopcak for the supplies and Phil & Carolyn Johnson for growing the pumpkins. The mission of Sons of Norway is to promote and to preserve the heritage and culture of Norway, to celebrate our relationship with other Nordic countries, and provide quality insurance and financial products to our members.

2 . November and December are months one especially associates with bounty and thankfulness. And so it is with Vennelag Lodge! Our members have many talents and skills which they have stepped forward to share. This spring our first garage sale netted over $ for our coffers. A portion of it was sent to the Sons of Norway Foundation, while the remainder was entered into our general ledger. Thank you to Doris Hayes and Martha Phillips for sheltering our sale and manning it when others were at work. Those who donated cookies and bars-we appreciated your efforts! As you conduct your fall cleaning, please set aside those items you would consider donating for next year s sale! It will be held in conjunction with the village-wide garage sale in April. Mange takk til allesammen for making our summer Kaffe Stue and Høst Frokost such wonderful events! Your willingness to make or donate food, help with preparations, including setting up the center, serving, or working on the clean-up crew made a difference. Our younger members made their presence known at these events and are great assets to our lodge. Neither event could occur without all of your enthusiastic support. Thank you, Steve Sopcak and Rita Schraepfer-Derke, for organizing these events which allowed Vennelag to share its food and culture with hundreds of area guests. Profits enabled us to purchase new signs that advertise our events, pay presenters a reasonable stipend for their efforts and travel, and bring entertainment to our members. I am proud to say that Vennelag is on the move, and it has been noticed in the community! We continue to take in new members, and I have found getting members is as simple as telling people what The Sons of Norway does and how its members share their love of all things Norwegian/Scandinavian. Don t be afraid to bring up membership with friends and family members. The worst thing they can say is No. It s not painful to broach the subject, and surprisingly someone may ask you to tell them more! The trip to Door County this fall was well-attended and the reviews were very favorable. Mother Nature gave us outstanding weather and great natural beauty to enjoy. I am always looking for new adventures. If you have suggestions, please let me know. The list of interested Lodge members who will be enjoying a trip to Norway next August continues to grow. It could be the time of your life! Linda McCormick, our tour specialist from Borton Overseas, has chosen our guides from those among her best. 3 November Lodge meeting will be held on Thursday, November 20 th. Join us at 7 P.M. for a light lunch served by the Vennelag officers and a trip back to the era of Norwegian immigration to America presented by Pastor Glenn Borreson. Glenn Borreson is a retired pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America who has served congregations in Wisconsin and Iowa. His first call was at South Wayne and Browntown in LaFayette County; most recently he was Senior Pastor at Holmen Lutheran Church, Holmen, WI. Among his retirement activities, he pursues woodworking, genealogy, and Norwegian-American history. An article of his, "From Telemark to Tamarack: Ski Jumping in Western Wisconsin," appeared in the winter issue of the Wisconsin Magazine of History. This "Coffin Ships" program began with his research to fill in the gaps in the story of his maternal grandmother's family. Glenn and his wife Mary live in Holmen, Wisconsin. THE COFFIN SHIPS: Death on the Ocean Crossing and One Family s Story Imagine yourself a child boarding a ship in Norway with your family, only to arrive weeks later in an American port city without your mother: she died on the ocean crossing and was buried at sea. What does that mean for you and your family? Will you have a home again? Can America still be the golden land of opportunity? This program is about the Norwegian immigrant experience crossing the Atlantic Ocean on a coffin ship, and specifically the story of one of Glenn s ancestor families and their struggle to begin a new life in America. Past Activities for Vennelag Lodge Door County Bus Trip Vennelag members and guests traveled to the beautiful Door Peninsula in September. One of the highlights of their trip was seeing the Stavekirke on Washington Island. The term stav means pole or support, and there are 12 center stavs or masts, as well as heavy beamed, ship-like construction throughout the structure. Adornments on the church represent a blend of both pagan and Christian symbols. The group visited Al Johnson s restaurant in Sister Bay for dinner one evening. Beforehand, they met the roof s residents, goats! They also enjoyed a fish boil, visited a lavender farm, searched for keepsakes, and enjoyed making some new friendships. It was a perfect outing for the Friendly lodge! September 21 st Cheese Days in Monroe As Captain of the Good Ship, Vennelag, I would like to thank our small but enthusiastic band of sailors who ventured to Monroe. Monroe celebrated the 100 th Anniversary of Cheese Days this year, and I look forward to seeing you for the 101 Anniversary in Marlyn Grinde Saturday, October 4 th Frokost (Norwegian breakfast) Shortly before 7:30 a.m. the first guests started down the serving line. Special guests included the District Five Board of Directors and spouses in Mt. Horeb for their fall board meeting. There were 342 adult and 40 child tickets sold compared to 272 adult and 14 child tickets at the 2013 event. A big thank you for all who helped make the Frokost a great success! It takes many members working together to make it all happen. Thank you for: all the calls made lining up donations and workers, setting up the community center on Friday, rolling meat, arranging cheese, setting up coffee pots, checking off items, arranging bake sale items, putting up & taking down signs, working in the cookie room, pouring milk and juice, Page 4

5 making food at home ahead of time, donating food or cash and for all the others who worked hard to make it possible. A special thank you to Guy Martin for two trips to Millers store during the breakfast for additional items needed. Your participation made it successful. 6 We are planning a Working Bunad/Busserrull sewing group starting March 1, We will be working on Sundays that are not Sons of Norway Lodge Meeting days. We will meet in the Community Building at 12:30 and will start working by 1 p.m. If you are interested in doing either a Busserrull or a Working Bunad you do not have to have experience sewing, just a yearning for learning something new. Please wash and dry your materials before the group starts meeting. See chart below for material requirements. Or if you have started one and just got stuck, bring it along with you and we will try to help you figure it out. You can purchase your materials from Lora Lee (phone ) to set up a time or you can go to your favorite fabric spot and purchase materials of good quality. Woolen blends or heavy quilting cotton will give you a better flow to your Bunad. If you have questions you may contact Tiffany Schwoerer at or Lora Lee for inspirations and materials.
