1 Bromeliad Society Vol 47 No 6 June, 2014 BS/H 43nd Annual Show Bromeliads: Jewels in the Garden 2014 Show Results MEETING DATE: Saturday, June 21, 10:00.a.m. PROGRAM: The ABCs of Bromeliads SEEDLING: Plan on attending the ABCs of Bromeliads for an informative yet fun get-together. You will learn about bromeliads, see Ray and Cynthia Johnson s greenhouse, visit, eat, drink and have a good time. Sam Chism s program will be Mounting Bromeliads on Wood. Everyone who plans to attend the ABCs picnic is asked to bring a covered dish (salad, vegetable or dessert), as lunch will be served. See page 5 for more information about our speaker and for directions to the Johnson s. Neoregelia Guacamole A new Bullis hybrid, it's a brightly colored plant with a lively mix of reddish purple and green areas. The green is yellow in strong sun. The green/yellow and red/purple areas are about equal in size. Apparently it's a good clustering plant, so it would do well in a hanging basket. Information provided by Sam Chism. NEXT BOARD MEETING: Thurs., 7/17, 7 p.m JULY PROGRAM: Malcolm McCorquodale DEADLINE FOR JULY BULLETIN: 6/25/14 Due to space constraints in this issue, pictures of more show winners will appear in the July bulletin. Winner of the Mulford Foster Best in Show Horticulture was Aechmea brassicoides shown by Wray Page. Winner of Morris Henry Hobbs Best in Show Artistic was Allyn Pearlman with his artistic arrangement, Slugs and Snails in the Garden with Guzmania Sangria and Mini Elise.

2 President s Page J ust returned from visiting the Bromeliad Society of Baton Rouge Show and Sale. It was a very good show with a number of species, cultivars and hybrids that I had never seen before. While several of our members judged the Show, for a change, Verna and I had no responsibilities. This left us free to visit with the local members and let them teach us a thing or dozen. They had a nifty display rack for hanging plants that dismantles easily for storage yet was sturdy enough for the purpose. Charlien says it is a must for the Southwest Bromeliad Guild Show. I ll be looking for a member with carpenter skills to pass the construction details to. The Sales room was also a seductive place to spend time and gather information. Nine plants followed me home, including some genera I did not currently have. Quite unrelated to Bromeliads but important to our visit, we discovered Drusilla s Seafood Restaurant. It is just beside I-12 if you are visiting Baton Rouge or passing through at mealtime. Some news from the Bromeliad Society International. BSI has hired a new webmaster. While the new website has been a step forward, there are some things about it that need reorganizing, fixing and expanding. A small example: I have two addresses (should be just one) bestowed by BSI and related to my Director s responsibilities. The one listed in the BSI members list on the BSI website links to a former Director and not to me. The address listed on the inside back page of a Journal some months ago is different but does reach me. These are some details that must be sorted out. I hope you are looking forward to the ABCs outing this month at the Johnson s in Beaumont. That will be a leisurely time to ask your questions, just visit, browse the Johnson s yard and greenhouses, and have a good meal. If you don t learn something new about Bromeliads at this event, you just won t be listening. Map and details are elsewhere in the Bulletin. Our most pressing task now is to complete the staffing for the Southwest Bromeliad Guild event so we can get all of the names into the draft booklet and have it printed for distribution. Please help us and be a volunteer. See you at the ABCs! Special thanks to Don Green for organizing the after-show party at the Carriage House Café. The food was good, the company was great, and a good time was had by all. (Picture courtesy of Gene Powers) Steve Reynolds and Michael Kiehl. Thanks are also in order for the generous donors to the Rare Plant Auction, which brought some spirited bidding for many special plants and other items. Thanks go to: Chris Nguyen, Gary Gallick and Jan Liang, Verna and Gene Powers, Ruby Adams, Don Green and John Sarkisian, Annette Dominguez, Margo Racca, David Schneider, Allyn Pearlman, Daryl and Wray Page, Frank and Cherie Lee, Harvey Beltz, Rick and Carole Richtmyer, Joanne and Jimmy Woolsey, Lee and Gordon Rowell, Ray and Cynthia Johnson, Charlie Birdsong, 2

MANY THANKS Every year it is the same dilemma, not enough space in the Bulletin for the show pictures and to thank 47 members individually. As usual, the solution is a simple, heartfelt Thank You to everyone who contributed to another successful plant sale and beautiful show. You are a very efficient team. We are thanking you for your assistance in May and asking for a repeat performance in October. Please start working with your potential show plants. The goal is 425 entries. Most of these will have to be from BSHI members, since the other SWBG societies are smaller and have fewer active members. Look at a copy of the work schedule for the May show and sale and you will understand the amount of work required and number of people needed to sponsor a successful show and sale. Please volunteer for as many hours and days as you possibly can for the Southwest Guild event. The dates for the event are: Friday, October a.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday, October 25 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday, October 26, a.m. until 5 p.m. Wray and Charlien Special Award Winners: Lou Trahan Artistic Sweepstakes: Allyn Pearlman Tom Montgomery Genera Sweepstakes: Gene Powers Lindsey Stowe Cryptanthus Sweepstakes: Ruby Adams Valerie Steckler Horticultural Display Sweepstakes: Rick Richtmyer John Anderson Best Aechmea Species: Ae. brassicoides, Wray Page Most Eye-Catching Neo: Neo. 5 R The ABCs emember our June meeting moves away from its usual location in the West Gray Multi-Service Center. This year we will again meet at Ray and Cynthia Johnson s house in Beaumont. The date is Saturday, June 21, and the hours are 10:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. (or really "until whenever"). The June meeting traditionally combines: Good food Lots of opportunity for information swap, conversation and bragging rights ( My bromeliad is bigger than your bromeliad ) Learning opportunities by viewing the Johnson s bromeliad displays, greenhouses and collection, and participating in the ABCs. The ABCs are reviews of selected aspects of the bromeliad hobby. This year Sam Chism will share his many years of growing expertise for the benefit of new and experienced growers alike. The Johnson s address is Alaskan Drive, Beaumont, TX If you miss a turn, their telephone number is From Houston, depending on where you live, you can take Interstate 10, US 90, or FM 1960 to US 90. US 90 joins I-10 before the exit for US 69 North in Beaumont, so everyone should take that exit. From US 69 North, turn west (left) on Texas 105. From Texas 105 turn north (right) on Sweetgum Road at the City of Bevil Oaks sign. Continue to Alaskan Drive (5 blocks past the Baptist Church) and turn east (right) to (2 blocks, second house from the end on the left). Meet our June Speaker: Sam Chism Sam Chism joined the BS/H in the mid-70's, as a young engineer who'd changed from a Project Engineering position in the military to a R&D Engineer in the Earth Observation Department (EOD) at the Johnson Space Center (JSC). He enjoyed collecting bromeliads from various trips, business or otherwise. He enjoyed planting seeds and raising them, until it became overwhelming and too laborious. He enjoyed selling, trading, etc., and holding sales in the local Clear Lake City area. Sam changed again, from EOD to the manned space activities, picking up lots of new work, and attended BS/H infrequently for years. Sam and Caroline had two children, Edward and Amanda. They devoted a lot of time and effort to raising them. As the kids completed their college work and developed their own lives, he was able to attend more BS/H meetings, and focused on the social aspects of the BS/H. Sam is currently assisting with seedling descriptions for the bulletin. 5

Please compare our prices and our quality. Member News: New home phone number for Gordon Stowe: The bromeliad weather Gods were great to the sales staff. A pleasant breeze most of the days and beautiful bromeliads to enjoy looking at during the sales. Thanks to all who helped with the sales with bringing boxes, bags, bromeliads and just keeping everyone company. Thanks to Vickey Gurka, Cynthia Johnson and Ken Gardner for helping man the registers. A special thanks to Verna Powers for organizing the plant tags once again for this sale. I know that the sales department as well as all others appreciated the efforts of Louise Epperson, Verna Powers and Daryl Page in the Hospitality area as well as any others that contributed! Many asked for the 24 hours slaw recipe so here it is: Mix 1 head of chopped cabbage (I use 1 bag of pre-cut slaw mix) and 1 small chopped onion. In a small pan, mix 1 cup sugar, 1 cup apple cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon salt, ¼ teaspoon dry mustard, ¼ teaspoon black pepper and ¼ teaspoon celery seed. Bring to a boil, then carefully add 1 cup canola oil and turn off heat. BE CAREFUL when you add the oil as the contents in the pot rises quickly. Drizzle over the slaw mix, cover, refrigerate and do not disturb. I make mine 3 or 4 days ahead and it will keep in the refrigerator for at least 2 weeks, if you don t eat it all first. Allyn 6
