October 2015 Port Stephens Ulysses Branch President: Kerrie Skinner Ph , Mob Secretary: Anne Crowley Mob Treasurer: Jackie McCallum Ph , Mob Committee: Brian McCallum (Webmaster), Brett Davis, Bob Lucas Ride Liaison Officer: Brett Davis Ph , Mob All sensible correspondence to: PO Box 356, Salamander Bay 2317 Newsletter correspondence to: Bob , Member of the Month President s Report Ok, I don t want to scare you, but it s only eight weeks to Christmas! I know... I know, but somebody was going to say it, it might as well be me. Since our last meeting I have attended the Newcastle Lower Hunter Branch 20 th Anniversary Dinner with Merilyn and it was a great night. Mike Abberfield presented Simon Clarke with a well-deserved Telemachus medal. Everyone enjoyed the company, food and the odd win on a horse or two as an added bonus. Don t forget that we have been invited to join Coalfields Branch at the Hunter Valley Gardens for a BBQ on the 8 th November. If you are going to attend could you please let me know so that I can give Bill Ingall numbers for catering, and there will be a small charge for lunch. Sunday 15 th November is our Branch ride to the Grey Gum Café to celebrate the raising of our club flag. The café has been generous, having our flag printed at their cost and raising it on a flag pole at the front of the premises. Unfortunately I will be on holidays that day but I am hoping there will be a good representation of riders on the day. A very happy birthday to John McGrath who celebrated his 60 th Birthday this month. I hope it was a good one. Stay safe and happy. Your President Kerrie A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired of his father as to when they could discuss his use of the car. His father said he'd make a deal with his son: "You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible a little, and get your bloody hair cut. Then we'll talk about the car." The boy thought about that for a moment, decided, he'd settle for the offer, and they agreed on it. After about six weeks his father said, "Son, you've brought your grades up and I've observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I'm pi$$ed off that you haven't had your hair cut." The boy said, "You know, Dad, I've been thinking about that, and I've noticed in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long hair, and there's even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair." "Did you also notice they all f*%#ing walked wherever they went?!!"

MINUTES OF SOCIAL MEETING 2015 (at Kerrie Skinner s home, Fullerton Cove) Meeting Opened: 8.00 pm Attendance: 20 Apologies: Anne Crowley, Paul Mulvay and Merilyn Evans. Kerrie welcomed all our members to the meeting. During the meeting we found out we have a new member has joined our Club, Terry Irish. Everyone cheered. We are looking forward to spending more good times with him and his wife, Terri. President s Report: Memorial Ride Day Sunday 13th Sept, Held at Tucker Park, Patterson. The day went well, thanks to everyone that brought food along and helped set up. 65 bikes incl. 20 pillions turned up for the annual event. We think it will be the last one that Pt Stephens will partake in. We ll probably do a more personal ceremony at Gan Gan Hill with our own branch from now on. Secretary s Report: Correspondence in/out: Nil Treasurer s Report: General Account: $ Meet & Greet Account: $ Business arising from previous minutes: Memorial Day: We collected $ in the Donation Bucket, which covered payment to the Pastor and Piper of $ each, and bit left over towards other costs. Money will be paid from petty cash for Gas Urn Rental, Varied drinks and paper plates, cups, serviettes etc. Newcastle Lower Hunter 20th Anniversary Dinner, Sat 10th October at Newcastle Harness Racing Club, Broadmeadow, was discussed. Cost $40 per head. Entry is free. If anyone interested in going, you need to speak to Bob Croft about it. Kerrie and Merilyn plan to go and also Billy and Glenys are joining them. Kerrie spoke about our Xmas Party, Saturday 12th December. It will be at Lemon Tree Passage waterfront Park this year, as Soldiers Pt. Bowling Club picnic grounds are no longer available. The finer details of food, bbqs, etc. will be discussed more at the next meeting. General Business: Dunn Swamp mid-week camping (Tues 15 Fri 18 Sept) organised by Billy Ingall. Bob Lucas spoke about the break away and said the place was just magical and good value for the cost. They had plenty of BBQ s, happy hours, telling stories and activities such as fishing and kayaking. Everyone that went thanked Billy for organising it and there was an expression of interest to go again. Jack mentioned that a new 2 year trial on Historic rego was released. Payment total of $50 through the RTA, which covers Rego and Green Slip. You need to be a Ulysses Club member to qualify. It can be used for 60 days of the year (via log book or club event). It would be worthwhile thinking about it.

Kerrie approached everyone about The Apple Orchard weekend possibly for October Costs would be approx. $30.00 per night each person and there is a 3 nights minimum stay. Bookings are required a year in advance, so we would need to do something about it soon. Bill Ingall invited our branch members to join the Hunter Coalfields branch for a BBQ Day at the Hunter Valley Gardens, Sunday 8th November. He will send the details to Jackie and Brian for it to be passed on through our members list. Facebook page called Pt Stephens Ulysses has been opened by Brian McCallum. Brian is to send an to everyone to tell them about it and those that want to be an ADD FRIEND can let him know. Ride Suggestions: Just when we thought there were no ride suggestions by anyone for October, our new member, Terry Irish came up with a ride for Sunday, 11 th October to Krambach Hotel. He would send details on to Brian. If anyone wants to organise a ride, on the spare of the moment, at any time, send an to Brian, so he can then pass it on to all our members per branch list. The Proposed Ride List which appears in our monthly newsletter had lots of suggestions but nothing fixed. Kerrie was looking for someone to go ahead with their suggestion, and Bob Lucas said he would do the Grey Gum Café ride on Sunday, 15 th November, The details are to be sent to Brian for out. Birthdays in October : Peter Cragg, Judy McTaggart, Andrew Bellott, Carole Crooks, Cheryl Allen, Leonie McCarthy, Steve Grimmond, Robyn Marlin. Also 3 x 60 ths = Carol Mahoney, John McGrath and Bruce Gendle. Raffle Winners : Trevor McGarry, Alan Ford and John McGrath. Fines: Bob Lucas and Peter Cragg. Raffle and Fines money: $70.90 in total. Kerrie reminded everyone that our October meeting, Friday 30th October, will be held back at our usual meeting place at Soldiers Pt. Bowling Club at 7.30pm. Meeting Closed: 9.00 pm. Hi everyone. Note from our Treasurer/Acting Secretary I would like to thank Kerrie, our President, for providing her lovely home for our September meeting, as the Soldiers Pt. Bowling Club was unavailable due to another function. She greeted all of us at the door with a big smile as we arrived. We started the night with drinks and an early BBQ for those that wanted dinner, and then other members followed just for the meeting. We had 20 people in total for the night and we all mingled before and after the meeting. It was very relaxing and Kerrie was the Hostess with the mostest, making everyone feel right at home. In fact to be totally honest, I think I preferred it to going to club. Yes it s me talking, the lady that likes playing the pokies after the meetings. It was a top night and enjoyed by all. You will be pleased to know that Anne is back home safe and sound. I enjoyed being the Acting Secretary for a

couple of months while Anne was away, but I will pass it back to her now that she has returned from her Overseas trip. Can t wait to hear all about it at the next meeting. Brian and I are heading off with Bob and Marilyn in our caravans to the Cobar RV Club AGM. Hopefully Bob s bad luck wont rub off on us during the trip, but then again there wont be a problem because we are there to look after him this time. We will return home in time for the October meeting, which is back to the usual place, Friday 30th October. Thanks everyone for your support. See you at the next meeting. Jackie McCallum Treasurer/Acting Secretary Hunter Coalfields Branch Hunter Valley Gardens BBQ invitation 11am, 8th November Billy is setting up the BBQ adjacent to the rear car park behind the Aqua Golf complex. Hunter Coalfields will cater for the day and will bill Pt Stephens for their number of attendees (don't panic about cost, it will be only cover catering) BBQ/tea/coffee will be provided. Either bring your own drinks, or they are available at the varied shops there. The times before or after the BBQ can be used to either; a) have a crack at the golf and see if you can beat me, causing havoc b) see how much cash you can depart with at all the shops available c) visit the actual gardens. Takes several hours, lots of walking, and from memory about $18 per head d) just lay around in the shade enjoying my company All I ask, is for notification of attendees for catering purposes, 2 days before Bill - Mobile Jackie has requested that if you would like to come along please let us know at the October meeting, or contact Kerrie by the end of the month, so we can let Billy know for catering details. Kerrie s address: kerrie.skinner@bigpond.com Kerrie s Mobile No: It is great that we are included in these social gatherings from other branches. Should be a great day! See you there, Jackie & Brian

BILLY S BUNDARRA RIDE On 16 th September we set off early to meet up with Billy and Glenys, Big John and Gail at Medowie Rest Area for our ride to Bundarra. Sadly, Jack (or Eve) had double-booked the weekend, and were down in Melbourne with Jack s brother. Dave had been visiting his Dad Bundarra pub Gloucester in Kempsey, so was riding directly from there. Stopped at Roadies Café at Gloucester for morning tea, then up Thunderbolt s Way to Walcha for a mixed-up lunch at Billy s favourite café. Billy claims it was Reunion! the café s fault, but I still reckon it was his, for gutsing my magnificent Walcha Burger instead of his chicken burger! Ah well, guess I ll get to try one another day... Arrived in Bundarra about 3 ish, and enjoyed a noisy greeting from the fun-loving Gold Coast mob - Tony and Liz, Allan and Caroline (and Al s Dutch girlfriend Belina), Cowboy and Bigbird, Burkey, Noel, Valkyrie Bob, Kevlar... and next thing, in rode Dave. Took a while to actually get upstairs to our rooms, but no worries, we had booked the entire pub out. Bundarra pub Al, Billy & Kevlar Cowboy & Noel A swinging first night as there was a birthday party there, so we had DJ s and LOUD music to get us out onto the dance floor, enjoying ourselves as though we were teenagers again. Possibly imbibed just a little too much, and stayed out a little too late, but hey, what a night! Tony & Liz Burkey & Marilyn

A pretty slow start on Saturday morning (and probably Beddoe shot over the limit anyway) so enjoyed a huge BBQ d breakfast courtesy of fantastic publicans Garry and Ruth, and delayed our rides till later in the morning. Some rode out Inverell way to the Salami Festival, some went to buy gems (not), and some of us rode out to Tingha Pub for lunch, Tony, Noel & Al only to find the pub doesn t do lunches! The deal is you walk down to the café, get your tucker, then bring it back to the pub to eat it. The other riders joined us there eventually, and we all rode back to Bundarra together - except Burkey, Liz and Tony, who just vanished into the distance. the banks of the Gwydir River. A quieter night Saturday evening, but still a lot of bullshit and plenty of laughs (could hear Liz all over town!), and another great meal at the pub. Bundarra, with a Over the Gwydir population of only 400, is a quaint but lovely little town on Said our goodbyes to the QLD mob on Sunday morning, and Billy and Glenys headed off with them. McGraths, us and Dave headed south, stopping for Old Commercial Bank of Sydney morning tea in Walcha (didn t dare ask for Walcha Burgers this time!), then lunch at Gloucester, and home in time to watch the MotoGP, then hook the caravan on for an early start to Cobar next morning. Sharon & Liz

Tingha pub Another beaut weekend with lovely people, and a great reunion for the Mildura River Cruise crew. You ve done good again, Billy. Tingha... words and pix by Bob Big John s 60th Big John s 60th Billy & Glenys, QLD bound The QLD mob head home An older couple reaching their 70's are about to get married, but before they say their vows, the woman wants to talk: She says: "I want to keep my house." He says: "That's fine with me." She says: "I want to keep my Lexus." He says: "That's fine with me." She says: "And I want to have sex 6 times a week." He says: "Put me down for Fridays.."... thanks to Brian for that one

Hi guys Well, as has become the norm, this newsletter was put together not at Shoal Bay, but this time from the sunny climes of Cobar. Marilyn and I arrived home from the great Billy ride to Bundarra on Sunday night. Luckily, we were home in time to watch Marc Marquez take an adrenalin-charged win in the final seconds of the very last lap at Phillip Island. Good to see the Hondas on the podium once again... makes all the difference when Marquez actually stays on his bike! Rossi rode extremely well again, and although finishing 4th, holds enough points advantage to take out this year s MotoGP championship. Hooked the caravan on, packed up, and left for Cobar Monday morning, with Brian and Jackie close behind. A beaut week away, apart from our neverending car problems, initiated by Dodgey Motors in Cairns way back in June. Bob s Blurb SICK LIST I was sad though to discover that our President Kerrie was not able to join us, as had too much on, and has been in pretty ordinary health recently. We missed Kerrie s happy face at the event, and wish her a quick return to good health. Richo s weren t to join us either, on this RV AGM jaunt, as Robyn is recovering from a bout of pneumonia, which we knew nothing about! Very best wishes Rob, for a speedy recovery. Also disappointing that Jack s leg hasn t recovered as quickly as initially expected, and we wish him well for continuing improvement (probably getting the right treatment now that he s on the Gold Coast with Tony and Liz and the rest of the mob from Bundarra...). Bob Croft has advised that Gold Coast Ulysses President Barry Davis is currently in John Hunter Hospital with spinal injuries suffered as a result of a very recent motorcycle accident in the New England area. Barry is currently in Ward H3 Bed 22 at the John Hunter Hospital if members know him or would like to pay him a visit. chaser to replace the ageing and weighty Honda 650 Dominator that carried him so faithfully for (most of) his ride to The Strzelecki with us last year... drum brakes and all! Wot a missus... some guys have all the luck! I m sure it ll serve you well Dave, and at least it ll be easier to pick up. Happy Birthdays for November: Ken Williams, Trish Beddoe, Malu Easthope, Brett Davis (getting close now!), Sue McGarry, Marilyn Couch. At our camp at Dunedoo last night ON A BRIGHTER NOTE Heard a rumour that Marilyn has shouted Dave a new chook Be nice to your kids. They're the ones who ll choose your nursing home...

8 th ULYSSES RV GROUP AGM IN COBAR OK, Lucas arrived home from the Bundarra ride on Sunday evening, hooked the caravan on, and headed west Monday morning Arvie (RV) with Brian and Jackie close behind. Made it to laid-back Mendooran before Happy Hour, and camped on the banks of the Castlereagh River. A really good spot to free camp here under shade, with basic amenities, and the pub an easy 5- minute walk across the road. Mendooran camp Tuesday afternoon saw Castlereagh River us in Cobar, at a mild 35 degrees (had been 37 not too far back!). Set up our camps, and over to Happy Hour to join the dozens of other RV ers who were already established. Really great to see all the familiar faces, including Jack s adoptive parents Ron and Louise, and Terry and Jan from Mudgee. As always there were still a lot of familiar faces without names... for me anyway... but they say that s what Alzheimer's does. My apologies to Dennis and Sue... as Dennis says, I do it every year! Have been through Cobar several times over the years, but never stopped to smell the roses. Before we left home, people would say to me; Cobar... Cobar... what the hell are you gunna do for a week in Cobar?. Friendly shingleback New Cobar mine

Well, Marilyn and I were pretty well flat-out every day until after the AGM on Saturday, starting first thing Wednesday morning with a tour of the Bureau of Meteorology station and launching of the weather balloon. Later on, a drive out to Devil s Rock and the Old Reservoir. We chose to take a short-cut on the way home from there, and after quite some time following diminishing farm tracks and doing turnbacks, encountered another one of those bloody endless fences like we did last year on the chookies south of Bulloo Downs! Finally found a gate that wasn t locked though, and Toby cooling off in Old Reservoir Happy Hour. Big pot-holes in Cobar... back onto the Barrier Highway and back to Cobar in time for We also drove out to Fort Bourke Lookout and had a gander from high above the New Cobar opencut, and took a bus trip out to Mt Grenfell to look at the aboriginal art there, only to be met by a Road Closed sign Pot Luck dinner 40Kms out. Reversed the sign and goaded the uncomfortable bus driver to continue on, but about 30Kms from our destination the road turned to a quagmire (we had heavy rain the night before). We were forced to reverse back about a kilometre before being able to turn around and head back to camp (after re-establishing the Road Closed sign). Bugga! Modern bikes out here! Me an the girl also did the town s (fairly unimpressive) Heritage Walk in 35 degree conditions, but fortunately it was only about 6Kms! No-

ticed a Pajero that looked just like McCallum s, parked outside an airconditioned café on our walk back to our car... Newey Reservoir And we enjoyed a drive out to Newey Reservoir, Cobar s Water Sports area. Found about half a dozen free-campers out there, relaxing under the shade of the peppercorn trees. A magic looking reserve with President Rick heaps of birdlife, but would ve been a lot more impressive if there had been water in the dam... Then there was the bus trip out to Peak Gold mines (which actually Mt Grenfell road DID get there), and learned of the many ups and down s in the history of mining in Cobar, since I sat next to driver Bob (bloody nice fella!), and gleened more history from him about his early days growing up in the now-dismantled Cornishtown, from the times when the population was around 45,000 (now about 7,000). Oh, and then there was the visit to the local Men s Shed (fellas only), where we learned how the more mature local blokes with nothing to do hang out, making all sorts of things and drinking tea. Don t think I'm quite mature enough for that yet... On Friday night our in-house artists Brian and Rick, and the ever-so-talented Gordon, and new (to us) vocalist Gloria, kept us wonderfully entertained until curfew at 10pm. Unfortunately the talented Hobbit and Vicki

weren t able to make it this year, as were engaged at a big ukulele shindig somewhere else. Men s Shed On Saturday evening Brian ordered a courtesy bus to take us and newfound friends Ian and Jenny (from Green Point, and he s an Adventure Rider!) to the Bowling and Golf Club for dinner. Excellent Chinese, Thai and Aussie cuisine there, and a good The band arrives night was enjoyed by all. Only problem was, bus driver Bob had had a big day with mine tours and all, and had staggered home to bed leaving us stranded! Young Bob and Marilyn walked back to the caravan park in balmy evening conditions (holding hands of course), while the others sat Gordon & Co waiting at the club enjoying themselves. Thought about leaving them to their own devices, but Marilyn weakened, and took our car to collect them. By the way, for those who may be interested, the AGM returned Rick Bedford and Ken Tacon to the Annual General Meeting top jobs, State Coordinators remained unchanged except for one, and the next AGM will be at beautiful Mallacoota on Victoria s east coast, from 17 th to 23 rd October In 2017 the AGM will be in the Margaret River region in Western Australia.... and for those who say What is there to do in Cobar?, let me assure you there is plenty to do and see in Cobar, and our treatment by the locals was fantastic! But I still don t think we ll be moving there from Shoal Bay... Cobar Mayoress thanks us Peak Gold mine Many thanks to Rick and his team of avid assistants who make these events possible.... words and pix by Bob

A farmer stopped by the local mechanics' shop to have his truck fixed. They couldn't do it while he waited, so he said he didn't live far and would just walk home. On the way home, he stopped at the hardware store and bought a bucket and a gallon of paint. He then stopped by the feed store and picked up a couple of chickens and a goose. However, struggling outside the store, he now had a problem, how to carry all his purchases home. While he was scratching his head, he was approached by a little old lady who told him she was lost. She asked, 'Can you tell me how to get to 1603 Mockingbird Lane?' The farmer said, 'Well, as a matter of fact, my farm is very close to that house. I would walk you there, but I can't carry this lot.' The old lady suggested, 'Why don't you put the can of paint in the bucket, carry the bucket in one hand, put a chicken under each arm, and carry the goose in your other hand?' 'Why, thank you very much,' he said and proceeded to walk the old girl home. On the way, he said 'Let's take my short cut and go down this alley. We'll be there in no time.' The little old lady looked him over cautiously and then said, 'I am a lonely widow without a husband to protect me. How do I know that when we get in the alley you won't hold me up against the wall, pull up m y skirt, and have your way with me?' The farmer said, 'Holy smokes, lady! I'm carrying a bucket, a gallon of paint, two chickens, and a goose. How in the world could I possibly hold you up against the wall and do that?' The old lady replied, 'Set the goose down, cover him with the bucket, put the paint on top of the bucket, and I'll hold the chickens Brian made me do it, Kerrie A guy was getting ready to tee off on the first hole when a second golfer approached and asked if he could join him. The first said that he usually played alone, but agreed to the twosome. They were even after the first few holes. The second guy said, "We're about evenly matched, how about playing for five bucks a hole?" The first guy said that he wasn't much for betting, but agreed to the terms. The second guy won the remaining sixteen holes with ease. As they were walking off number eighteen, the second guy was busy counting his $ He confessed that he was the pro at a neighboring course and liked to pick on suckers. The first fellow revealed that he was the Parish Priest. The pro was flustered and apologetic, offering to return the money. The Priest said, "You won fair and square and I was foolish to bet with you. You keep your winnings." The pro said, "Is there anything I can do to make it up to you?" The Priest said, "Well, you could come to Mass on Sunday and make a donation. And, if you want to bring your Mother and Father along, I'll marry them.
