Carried. General Business: 1. Amateur Radio Day report: Richard ZL1BNQ reported that the Club had provided an excellent display in the main street of Papakura. However there was not too much interest in our display. Perhaps better at another time of year, such as November. 2. ZL50VK QSL Cards: John ZL1ALZ reported that over 10,00 contacts made with the special callsign. Consider ordering 2000 QSL cards Th Anniversary: Richard ZL1BNQ outlined the program for the 12th February. Clubrooms to open at 13:00, with a presentation of Club History at 14:00, followed by afternoon tea and presentation of 50 year certificates at 15:00. In the evening, a dinner at the Apple Orchard Korean BBQ starts at 19: Working Bee report: Ten or twelve attended to clean up around the building and inside. 5. Awards presentation: Ian ZL1AOX presented Fred ZL1FAV and John ZL1ALZ with their Jock White Field Day Award, and another JWFD Award to John ZL1BYZ and David ZL1DK. 6. Clubroom Chairs: Rolly ZL1ASN showed two examples of a possible replacement stacking chair. Cost was $100 plus GST, so would cost $6900 to re- 3

4 place 60 chairs. Geoff ZL1AKY suggested that the old chairs could be recovered, and John ZL1ALZ was not keen on changing. Kelvin ZL1UKL moved that the Committee investigate refurbishing the old chairs before considering purchase of new chairs so as to compare costs. Seconded by Cliff ZL1RP. Carried. 7. BBQ at John ZL1ALZ s was held in good weather, but attendance was down, but enjoyed very much by those present. Thanks to John and Gillian for use of their home. 8. Jock White Field Day: Fred ZL1FAV advised that a station using the special ZL50VK call will be set up at the Clubrooms. David ZL1DK to advise possible users of our Club use of rooms. 9. VHF Net on 7325: Cliff ZL1RP advised that signal was very weak over past weeks. After discussion, decide to remain with 7325 as repeater is expected to be repaired soon. 10. New Zealand DX Hall of Fame: Ken McCormack ZL1AIH was invited to make the presentation to John Shaw ZL1BYZ of his induction into the NZ DX Hall of Fame as the seventh member. Ken reviewed some of the achievements in Amateur Radio John had made over the past years. The presentation was received with acclamation from all Members present. Raffle was won by Paul ZL4AX Meeting closed at 20:30 and was followed by a presentation on Packet Radio past, present and future by Paul ZL4AX. Listen for Paul s station on MHz. The club newsletters going back to 2002 are being put onto CD as well and will be stored at the club for your use. If you missed last weeks DVD on the dxpedition to South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands 2002 VP8THU then get along to the DVD night on the 23 rd of March when the 2 nd part of this dxpedition is shown. The visit to VP8GEO. You will not be disappointed. I was enthralled by the scenery and effort this group put in. These DVD s are very well put together. 9 Radio Just for the hell of it! Some snaps from Franc ZL1SLO/MM last weekend. His one-man expedition was ingenious and embodies all the great fun of ham radio!! Franc had his mobile radio shack van winched onto a large industrial flat-bed barge and towed out into the middle of the Waitemata Harbour, where it was anchored for the weekend. For three days and nights he was marooned there with his large trailer-mounted generator supplying the radios, computer and webcam. He worked huge HF pileups through the nights and twilight hours, aided by the 360degree water path, and slept in the van between shifts, shielded from the scorching sun only by a tarpaulin thrown over the van. The location became known as 'Fantasy Island'by local operators, but there's no doubt that this was a Maritime Mobile station of exceptional character. It is unknown if 'Man Friday'was along to cook the bacon and eggs for this modern-day 'Robinson Crusoe'! Well done Franc, an outstanding operation. Paul ZL4AX 9

12 From the President Here we are March already. We ve had a pretty busy time recently with our 50 th celebrations taking centre place. The afternoon of the 12 th of February saw a good turnout at the clubrooms were there was a lovely display of old radio s and lots of photographs depicting the club s history. Richard Gamble (ZL1BNQ) presented a slideshow of a great selection of photo s and other historic items. Great fun to for some to see how much hair they had in the old days! Several members were presented with a certificate for 50 years of continuous membership of the Papakura Radio Club, a great effort indeed. A lovely afternoon tea followed and a lot of stories were shared amongst members some who hadn t seen each other for a long time. In the evening around 25 of us met at the: Apple Orchard Korean Restaurant in Drury for a lovely dinner. A lot of food that most of us were not used too but I think all of us went back for seconds. A great day and our thanks goes to all those that helped to organise the event. Not forgetting the behind the scene people like the ladies who arranged and served afternoon tea. Thanks all! By the time you read this we would have had the annual Jock White Field Day, if all went well there would have been a field station behind our clubrooms using our ZL50VK call sign. About the call sign, we ve only got it for one more month so make the most of it and look for it on the air and get it in your log. Even better, spend some time and put it on the air. Just contact John, ZL1ALZ for details. With over lookups on QRZ.com it is proving very popular around the world and it shows the effort of some of our members that have put the call out. Last Wednesday night meeting saw several members busy building their projects and several people turned up for the DVD show. Ricky, a local, called in and wanted to join our club and become a Ham. He stayed for the evening and enjoyed the movie. Hopefully he ll come along to our general meeting and I am sure all of us will welcome him and help to guide him through the process of becoming a Amateur Radio Operator. The DVD was another great documentary about an expedition to the Sandwich Islands in 2002 (part1). An awesome film not just showing the radio side of the trip but also about the history and wildlife of the island. I for one, look forward to part 2 next month, another evening not to be missed at our great club, come 12

Our anniversary event prompted this thought as a lot of time was spent looking for pictures and realizing that most members will have some photo s on their computers. But those, being scattered around Auckland, makes it hard to get at times so a collection of CD s held at the club is the answer. Please have a look on your hard drive and put some on a disc. A label with some details and that s all it takes. A nice project for all on a quiet night.
