3 From the President By Darrell Ahlberg, President Time to Start Planning Our Activities For 2012!! The 2011 calendar year is winding down, but the level of activities has not slowed. If you log on to the website and check on 2012, the activity level tapers off considerably. Not to worry, it s all part of the plan. On October 19, with your help, we will begin planning for the 2012 calendar year. I stress, with your help. On that night, I m inviting all GMSC members to my house for a night of Activity Planning. We are getting underway a full month ahead of last year which should help in planning for the early part of the year. It s events like this that make the GMSC what it is, a club run by the members for the benefit of the membership. GM Ski Club Thanks Those Who Contributed In As you ve been enjoying the events and activities of the past year if you wondered who to thank for all the hard work, see the following list. When you see these individuals be sure to give them big thanks. As volunteers, the best reward is in knowing we ve contributed and our efforts are appreciated. A couple other things you may notice from this list. This is not a small operation. The list of contributors is large because it takes the efforts of a lot of people to make the club what it is. Some contributions are large and some are small but we appreciate the efforts of everyone who helps out. I couldn t name all contributors, because there were so many. The club is what it is because of the enthusiasm of members like you who step up and make it all happen. Without members like you, we wouldn t have half the fun or have half the ideas that we do, and we are always ready for more ideas If your name isn t on the list this year, but you would like to help in some way, you would be most welcome. A great place to start would be at Activity Planning Night October 19. If you can t attend, but would still like to offer suggestions, please let either myself or another board member know. Membership Renewals. You may recall the board sent out a survey last year soliciting your thoughts on the newsletter. Your responses were considered carefully and we have acted on many of them. One suggestion was to offer the newsletter via rather than snail mail. Several advantages were pointed out. (1) preserving our environment by generating less paper, (2) all the pictures in color, and (3) you ll get it faster. This year we are offering the option, since it saves the club postage and printing we are offering $5.00 off the cost of your membership renewal if you choose the version only. Renewal Deadline Your membership is due by the October 13th general meeting. Renewal is $25 for paper newsletter, and $20 for the version. How about that? After the general meeting, membership renewal goes to $30, but you can still save the $5.00 with option. I hope I ve help cleared things up. That s it for now. I hope everyone has found something that they were looking for in the club and we will be seeing you back again for Most importantly, I look forward to seeing you at my house October 19. I ll be seeing you soon at one of our many great GM Ski Club events. -Darrell. Saying Thank You For A Great 2011 As 2011 begins to wind down and we reflect on what a great year it was and all the fun we had, a grateful GM Ski Club would like to acknowledge and thank the following individuals who worked so hard to make it the great year that it was. If I left anyone out, I sincerely apologize. Please let me know so we can thank you properly in the next issue of the newsletter.

10 Mackinaw Bridge Walk Recap What a really great weekend it was for the Bridge Walk. While the lower part of the state was reeling from the heat we were in a very comfortable 66 degrees up in Indian River. It was a great weekend of sun and water and oh yes, plenty of food and drink! We had a fire pit behind the hotel where we stayed, so we gathered there after diner and with a few drinks in hand. We rented a pontoon boat on Sunday to cruise the Indian River and the Crooked River up into Burt Lake and back into Mullet Lake, thanks Jeff for taking care of the details and the great idea. A beautiful day on the water, sun and good company, maybe less wind would have made the journey across the lake a little less wet. Stopped a couple of times for refreshments, and then made it back to the dock before a little rain came in and took away the sun. Mondays Bridge Walk was awesome. A cool 56 degrees to start, very little wind, but the clear views of the lake and the islands were great. We finished the walk in good time, from an hour and 20 minutes to an hour and a half. Met up with some folks from our club and the Schussmeisters out of Flint downtown in a local watering hole for a little cheer and a bite to eat before heading home. All in all it was a great time for everyone. I hope next year you will join us. Have a great fall and see you at the next meeting. Cheers Les Ludington Camping Weekend Wow, what a great weekend! This has to be one of the best if not the best camping trip that we have done. I would like to thank Stu and Cindy for all the work that they did in preparation of this weekend getaway. You couldn t have asked for better weather, really nice campsites and such a beautiful location. The location on the Lake Michigan shore gave us sand dunes to hick, lighthouses to explore and lakes and beaches to canoe, kayak or pontoon. I do believe that the sky on Thursday night was the best that I have seen since I was a kid. Talk about stars, you can t imagine what we saw that first night. The Milky Way was visible, constellations that I have only seen at Cranbrook. We really had everything that weekend. Including our own family or two of raccoons. Those little masked bandits took our hamburger buns as well as giving us a great hoot, while watching them. Sitting around the campfire and seeing little eyes in our food tent sent us all scurrying about to chase them away and keep them out or our tents. I will remember this camp out for a very long time. There are many stories to be told here and this is my most memorable. Thanks Stu and Cindy. Les.
