6 GMSC Activities Planning Night Wednesday Oct 17 Many GMSC Hands Make Small Work Ever wonder what makes the GMSC such a great club and how it s possible for you to enjoy so many activities and make so many new friends? Ever wonder who to thank for all these great opportunities? Well look in the mirror and you ve found the one to thank. GMSC wouldn t be anything without the members of its community. We all band together, contribute a little and get a lot in return. Just take a look at the list of contributors from 12/01/11 12/31/12. No fewer than 40 individuals have contributed to making GMSC activities what they are. And this does not even count the board members valuable administrative efforts. A little effort from a lot of people amounts to big things for all of us. Planning for next year s activities will start Wednesday, October 17 at Darrell Ahlberg s house. Please plan to attend and let us know what you d like to see happen. This promises to be an evening as festive as it is productive. Contact Darrell Ahlberg dahlberg7@comcast.com. 8 GM Ski Club Biking Well, I didn t put anything in the Sept. newsletter about biking so since I last reported, we have had four biking events: the 29 th of July, the 12 th and 26 th of August and the 9 th of September. Each was kind-of different, either in attendance or venue or activities on or after the trip. The 29 th of July was the hottest weather and yet it was the best attended. We rode our most frequently traveled trail, the Paint Creek trail, but as you can see from my picture at our post-effort watering hole, the Rochester Limelight, we numbered around 25 partying participants. Our next outing on the 12 th of August, a decent weather day, had only 8 people show up. I figure it was because I ran that outing instead of Stan. Fortunately they were 8 strong cyclists because we detoured from the Macomb Orchard trail into Stoney Creek. It was six miles of up and down and down and more up. My thighs ache just recalling the experience but we had a couple of Skiwis, Lee and Larry, who attended and had a tandem bike and I ll be darned if they weren t able to circle the lake twice. Next was the 26 th of August another hot day relatively small turnout. But our reward was that we took the Clinton River trail into downtown Auburn Hills and stopped at some Irish named bar to liquid fortify ourselves for the trip back where we re-liquid-fortified ourselves at the Limelight. Our final trip, for this report, was on the 9 th of September. It was a relatively cool, beautiful day and we rode on the West Bloomfield trail, an extension of the Clinton River trail, which most of the 15 or 16 of us who showed up had never biked on before. The trail ran south of Upper Straits and Orchard lakes. It was an okay trail but afterwards Vickie Slicker, who was on the trip and lives in the area, opened up her home for a post-biking gathering. So after we were done we arrived at her place to cool breezes from her lake, a big table spread with good food and Gary Ward cooking burgers on the grill. It don t get any better than this. So, if you look at the accompanying pictures, you will see we have a little core of regular attendees and a lot of people who drift in and out. I would like to see that little core grow. You can see that, big group or small, we always have an exciting and fun event. Having more people does tend to make it more fun, though, so for you in & out drifters and for those who have not joined us in the past, Stan and I personally invite you to come out and see what a great activity our biking has become. I noticed that our calendar does not show any October rides currently scheduled. Probably because we have so many other things going on, but watch Darrell s postings to see if we can squeeze one in. If not, keep this invitation in mind as a fun event for next year.
